One of the 50's divas.......2002-04-04

The 50's R&B scene were ruled by 5 divas- Dinah Washington,Ruth Brown,Laverne Baker,Little Esther with Johny Otis's Band and this young lady-Faye Adams. I can't describe to you the reaction I get when I play " Shake a hand" on my radio show or at my oldies nites in clubs. It is easily one of the most powerful and recognizable R&B songs of the entire decade of the 50's. And what a performance from Faye- a powerhouse of a vocalist. If you could only afford 3 songs in your entire collection reflecting 50's R&B and you included in that frugal collection "Pledging my love" by Johnny Ace, "You Send Me" by Sam Cooke and "Shake a hand" from Faye Adams as far as impact and recognizability these 3 attained you would need no more- for your collection would be richly complete. This cd also contains her other 2 R&B smashes "Hurts me to my heart" and "I'll be true to you ". Another piece of R&B and Rock n Roll history that's worth the price of gold coins in a velvet pouch.

The second set of recordings for Herald from 1954 includes some great material, much of it illustrating how Lightnin' Hopkins incorporated other styles of the day into his own. The influence of John Lee Hooker is audible, especially on "Boogie Woogie Dance" (the title's sort of a giveaway) and "Don't Need No Job," and certain songs, notably "Let's Move" and "Lightnin's Special," border on rock & roll. Pleasant surprises include two tracks with Ruth Ames on vocals: "Finally Met My Baby" and "That's Alright Baby." These sessions took place before the folk resurgence of the 1960s carried Hopkins to fame for the second time, and there's something about them that feels more authentic than his later work, for all that they show the changing trends of the time. --Genevieve Williams

Get Vol. 1 first!.......2000-05-11

This is Collectables' second volume of Lightnin' Hopkins' Herald material, which showcases the great Texas bluesman cranking it up a bit more than usual. But get Vol. 1 first: the material is better; Vol. 2 features two vocals by the mediocre singer Ruth Ames, backed by Hopkins; and, in a shamefully audacious move, Vol. 2 puts five identical songs from Vol. 1 on this disc, four under different titles! "Shine on Moon" is listed as such on both discs, while "Lightnin's Boogie" from Vol. 1 is reproduced as "Boogie Woogie Dance," "Hear Me Talkin'" as "Early Morning Boogie", "Flash Lightnin'" as "Lightnin's Special", and "Lightnin's Stomp" as "Grandma's Boogie". This takes the shine off what is otherwise a pretty good album.

The Best Ever.......2002-12-21

This too is my favorite Christmas album. It strikes a perfect balance between the sometimes saccharine and bombastic choral style of the usual choir recordings, and avoids the synthesized, modern interpretations that sound anachronistic to my ears. This is the only bearable version of Jingle Bells I have ever heard. I can not recommend this highly enough.

Absolutely Unbelievable.......1999-11-16

This cd is by far the best christmas cd in my collection of over 20. The Coventry Carol is the most stirring, moving accounts of the song that i have heard in my life, and is still my favorite carol, after i have heard it easily over 500 times. The rendition of Jingle Bells in incredible. This cd is a MUST OWN for any serious Christmas music fan.

Delightful new (old) Christmas choir music.......1998-12-23

This is my very favorite Christmas carol CD! DeCormier and Pierpont have arranged the familiar and not so carols in a bright fresh wrapper. The voices feature tight (and unusual) harmonies and the instrumentation features bells and drums of the Victorian period. Give this one a listen.
