Just Jazz Guitar May 2002
In Richie you hear Montgomery, and a lot of George Benson, but what you really get is original Richie Hart.

Product Description
Jazz guitar trio. Richie Hart is a Wes Montgomery/George Benson style guitarist who swings like crazy! He is joined by a veteran rhytm section of Rick Petrone, bass and Joe Corsello, drums. Together the trio is both exciting and easy to listen to.

In paying tribute to her roots, Martina McBride doesn't merely cover a selection of classic country favorites, she conjures an entire era. You'd swear that was Floyd Cramer playing piano on the album-opening "You Win Again," and Chet Atkins picking guitar on the following "I'll Be There." The steel guitar featured so prominently throughout Timeless recalls a time when country sounded distinctly--and proudly--different from rock, while the background chorale on "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "Once a Day," as well as the soaring strings on "Rose Garden," remind one of the "countrypolitan" crossover sound. Except for a delicate rendering of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone," McBride's versions don't really add anything to the originals, because these songs weren't missing anything. But she makes "I Don't Hurt Anymore" sound as fresh and pure as it did when Hank Snow recorded it more than a half-century ago, while her rendition of "Till I Can Make It on My Own" has all the brittle conviction that Tammy Wynette invested in it. --Don McLeese

I love Martina McBride. I went to her recent concert and loved it. I love most of the song on her cd. If you're a fan definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD Since Her Fist.......2007-05-06

I just bought this [...] this morning, and I'm telling you right now, this is the best CD Martina McBride has done since her first one. She almost makes you forget that these classic songs were originally done by other singers. I know of nobody else who would be able to handle Connie Smith's 1964 hit "Once A Day" so well.
Another thing, this CD is actually Country (I mean the "real" thing) and it's really great to see how Martina handles the real stuff.
Buy this one if you're a Martina McBride fan... or if you're a fan of REAL Ccountry Music like it was back in the day!
As I said, I loved Martina anyway, but after this CD, I have a whole new respect for her and her music.

5 out of 5 stars Martina McBride sings country.......2007-03-09

LOVED IT.....she sings the kind of country music we have enjoyed over the years and sounds just like the original artists....

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly Pieced.......2007-01-12

This album is retro of today in the fact that it is still the same today as it was when the original recordings were made. The songs chosen for this classic tribute blend together in a fitting mixture.None of them is extremely the opposite of another.

Martina's voice may have a bit of twang at points it really is very charismatic and beautiful. This is interesting in some ways. In songs like "Heartaches By The Number" and "I Can't Stop Loving You" she hits those songs ,with a high pitch attractiveness that draws the listener to hear. For songs(originally Don Gibson & Kris Kristofferson)with depressing themes that's 100% feat.

"Once A Day" has a sadness to it,and yet it tickles my funny bone ,too.
How happy is a person who is now only sad"once a day all day long",and "once a night from dusk to dawn."? She sings it in a meaningful way which I love.

"You Ain't Woman Enough" and"Thanks A Lot " are bold and sassy.Again the vocals make them easy to visualize."Thanks A Lot"captures hurt and sadness in a bold, angry way. "You Ain't Woman Enough" is a bold confrontational song about a hopeful to be a mistress at the least, and an angry ,loving wife .

The songs chosen were aces, and Martina McBride did just that in her classic country tribute.

5 out of 5 stars MCBRIDE BRINGS BACK THE OLD COUNTRY.......2006-10-19

MCBRIDES SONGS ARE TIMELESS IN THE CONTENCT AND ARTISTS WHICH MADE THEM FAMOUS. HER STYLE, BRIGHT, BOUNCY RENDITIONS ARE REMENISSENT OF THE GRAND OLD OPRY ON SAT. NIGHT...... ONE OF THE FEW "NEW" "COUNTRY" SINGERS WHO KNOW WHAT COUNTRY SOUNDED LIKE WHEN IT WAS THE OLD COUNTRY.

As you might expect, Timeless isn't your parents' Sergio Mendes. Take "Mais Que Nada," the opener from that topselling staple of post-60s, post-bossa, near-kitsch Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: Greatest Hits. Here it's no simple, slinky groove. The Black-Eyed Peas are along for the bumpin' ride. What it amounts to is the same intercultural collision that happened when bossa nova met jazz and pop via Stan Getz's tenor sax, except here the meeting is between the lounge and, presumably, the street. John Legend and India.Arie keep the session on a downtempo, neo Brazilian vibe on "Please Baby Don't" and the title track (respectively). Once those are tunes end, though, it's back to the bump and the beats and the irresistible party vibe of the set. Don't fret, though, as the Peas keep things light enough to trigger innocent headbobs and chilled out dance steps. Just as you might hear Timeless and agree that it ain't your parents' Sergio, your parents can also hear will.i.am's and the Peas's pivotal roles and say that it's not their kids' Black-Eyed Peas, either --Andrew Bartlett

Description

Timeless is the magnificent new album by the legendary Sergio Mendes. Produced by and featuring Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, this album is a wholly original synthesis of music from the man who--40 years ago--brought Brazil 66 and "Mas Que Nada" to the world. Timeless beautifully blends the urban culture of Brazil, samba and bossa nova with the urban culture of America, hip hop and rap, the results of which are truly spectacular.

Putting together the project, Will and Sergio, of course, brought in the Black Eyed Peas. They also recruited some of the biggest urban-pop artists of the last several decades, each a Sergio fan, to contribute to various tracks. Featured artists include Erykah Badu, Justin Timberlake, India.Arie, Q-Tip, John Legend, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, and members of the Roots and Jurassic 5.

4 out of 5 stars Street meets the bossa beat---4.5 stars.......2007-07-02

I didn't like Sergio growing up in the day, I was a Motown fan and couldn't get down with bossa nova or latin beats. "Timeless" manages to keep some of the sound of the old Brazil 66 and add some new flavor via Stevie Wonder who was one of my faves back then. Of course, they've brought in John Legend with some new soul. Then, they top that off by bringing in the Black Eyed Peas, who I'd never have thought of, and the concept just works.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!.......2007-05-16

This album is a classic! My kids actually introduced me to the album. I'm a Sergio Mendes fan from way back. Buy it!!!

5 out of 5 stars I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-10

I am a 52 y/o old fart but once was a cool college d.j. I am not a big rap/hip-hop fan but it sounds fantastic combined with a latin groove. When I was spinning LP's in the late 70's, we thought Sergio Mendes had "sold-out" to pop. What did we know? His music, whether "roots" or "pop" is absolutely beautiful. I admire the creativity of the artists who have made the Timeless CD worthy of its title.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastico!! Eu amo Brasil!.......2007-05-08

This album is off the hook! I never knew this hidden gem was so good. It is amazing what Will.I.Am and Sergio did. There are so many songs that are my favs such as Mas Que Nada, The Frog, that Samba Song, and etc. There is a great compilation of rap, samba, bossa nova, singing, and etc. Black Eye Peas, Q-Tip, Black Thought (Roots), John Legend, and etc. makes this a wonderful compilation and celeration of the beautiful Brazilian culture.

My wife is Brazilian and we love the album so much we even played some of it at our wedding reception. This album should be selling a lot more and deserve worldwide acclaim. Sergio Mendes "Timeless" is truly the best kept secret...you gotta listen to this!

5 out of 5 stars An aptly-titled album from a timeless artist.......2007-03-17

Mendes's "Fool on the Hill" was one of the first albums that this then fifteen-year-old bought with his allowance. Thus began an almost forty-year love affair with the Brazilian's sound. One can't imagine my excitement when I learned of the release of "Timeless," his first album of new music in over a decade.

And what an album it is!!! The disc is an outstanding blend of the old and the new, with cuts to satisfy the contemporary crowd as well as those of us with nostalgia of the soul.

Though the album features guest performances from the likes of Justin Timberlake to Jill Scott to John Legend, the best cuts are those that harkens back to the cool 1960's, adding a new dimension with rap and modern rhythms. The revisit of "Mais Que Nada," "Berimbau/Consolacao" (featuring vocals by Gracinha Leporace and a killer hamonica solo from Stevie Wonder), "Bananeira," the title cut (with India.Arie on vocals), "Lamento (No Morro)," "Yes, Yes Y'All," and "Samba Da Bencao," are thrilling in every way and certain to appeal to an international audience.

Bravo for Mendes and, hopefully, with the utilization of modern stars, he will reach a young audience that will discover one of music's legendary innovators.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic.......2007-05-14

"Living Stereo" was the name of RCA'S highest quality recordings. The three major labels, RCA, Columbia and Capitol all invested large amounts of money and effort to improve, indeed, perfect the new LP stereo recordings of the 1950's. This album presents a good example of RCA's labor and technology. Although some of these songs are generations old and recorded on rather primitive equipment, they still sound great. Thanks to digital technology, these precious gems sound better today than they did when they were first recorded almost 50 years ago. I bought the LP, then the cassette version so I could listen to it in my car as I traveled the Pacific Northwest selling records and tapes to retailers. You will enjoy listening to the harmony of this cowboy classic.

5 out of 5 stars The last round-up.......2007-04-19

As a small child in the early 1960's, I was given an EP of four songs that were originally on the COOL WATER album (these were: "Cool Water," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," "The Last Round-up" and "Ghost Riders In The Sky"). At the time, I didn't know who the Sons Of The Pioneers were and had never heard any of their music. Long story short-- I LOVED that record. So, many years later, when the opportunity presented itself, I gladly bought the LP.

This early stereo recording (1959) is a marvel. Traditional cowboy songs with a full (yet not intrusive) orchestra. Gorgeous harmonies, classic tunes and excellent sound. COOL WATER is a truly great album that all fans of traditional American music should own. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars cool water music cd.......2007-01-09

the songs where sung by some of the oldest western singers in the 20th century, such as autry murphy and roy rogers.
the group was called the sons of the pioneers and if you consider that the wild west still was in the early `900's and tombstone still had stages and sherrifs you can see why.
if you truly like REAL country or western music, then sons of the pioneers is for you

5 out of 5 stars Stands Alone In Time & Genres.......2007-01-09

First the history of this album for me, then my impressions of the CD.

As a kid, we'd leave my hometown of Tulsa and make the drive to my Great-Grandparents' home, in the little town of Holdenville, Oklahoma. While the adults hung up coats and fixed lunch and talked and talked and TALKED, I'd race to the back room.

The back room had tinkertoys, a handful of trinkets gathered from local eating establishments, but for me it mainly had a record player and a stack of records.

It didn't take me long to figure out that very little of my Great-Grandparents' music was going to appeal to me; however, among the stack, I found this album. I loved it immediately and played it every time we went to their house.

Years later I inherited that album, but by that time a bad needle had ruiend the recording and none of the digital "tricks" I had could resurrect it.

Fast-forward to today, and the CD arrives!

As you might imagine, I had high expectations for this CD. Not only does it meet my expectations, it completely exceeds it.

First, the songs are of course exactly as I remember. However, it's like a veil has been lifted between me and the performace... this isn't sound in a groove coming from a cone, they're performing in the room! I'd forgotten how irresistable it is to harmonize with them.

The dynamics are at least as wide as on the album, actually wider because there's no "overload" point where it turns to fuzz. Voices truly soar.

The recordings, while focused on the nartually-eq'd voices, are deep, rich, full, clear, crisp and fresh. This is a very well-balanced recording!

O.K, finally, this is a recording from analog tape form 1959... how's the hiss?

ABSENT.

No joke. I like to think I've got pretty sensitive ears, and I'm not hearing ANY tape noise even at loud volumes. Absolute worst noise is the slightest 60 cycle hum at the beginning or end of one or two tracks when one mic is open by itself. Frankly, I'm not convinced I'm hearing that! I don't know if the RCA producers were magicians with analog tape, or if the company that mastered this CD figured out how to take out the hiss without disturbing the rest of the music... but it is whisper-quiet. the CD label says "Advanced Noiseshaping Redither," and maybe that's the magic... whatever it is, WOW!

In very brief moments, to only the slightest degree, is there a hint of analog overload, but it NEVER distracts from the music and is only a surprise because you almost forget this isn't a full-digital recording!

If you have the SLIGHTEST interest in the Sons of The Pioneers, cowboy music, or simply want an excellent example of what the medium was / is capable of, please do yourself a favor and get this CD!

P.S. - An added bonus for me: ironically, my Great-Grandparent's copy was MONO. Obviously, these recordings were meant to be heard in stereo. If you listen to the files on this page, you'll hear some of the problems of listening in mono: phase issues, etc. Buy this, and listen through headphones for best effect.

P.P.S. - Dig that bass singer!!! :-)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Western Songs By A Great Group.......2006-08-09

This CD has some great songs sung by The Sons of the Pioneers. Ridin Home, Way Out There and Riders in the Sky are outstanding. This is the group that carried on after Bob Nolan retired. The singer who sounds like Bob Nolan is Tommy Doss who does a great job on Riders in the Sky and others. I bought this album in 1959 when it was originally available, and am happy it is now on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-06-06

Great albums for their time and truly amazing that The Doors could produce two quality albums without legendery Jim Morrision who died a year prior. Robby & Ray can sing. WOW. MY doors collection is complete.

5 out of 5 stars Even If It's Not The Original, It's Still Good.......2006-10-06

I wonder if the negative reviews here reflect the actual music, or just the band name. In other words, I wonder if this CD would've gotten more positive comments if The Doors' name hadn't been attached to it.

This music is great, and I admire the fact that Ray, Robby and John continued without Jim. After all, just because your lead singer dies doesn't mean that you have to stop living. And besides, I like a lot of what I hear on this CD. "In The Eye Of The Sun" and "Variety Is The Spice Of Life" are my favorites. Is this the same Doors who created "Light My Fire"? No. But can the other three still perform well? Yes.

On a similar note, The Who have just recorded a new album. They are missing some of their band members too. But Pete and Roger continue to tour, and they still sound incredible.

In conclusion, I recommend trying to take this album for what it is. No it is not the same, but it's good. Don't let Jim's absence drag you down, just look at this album as three guys playing great music.

2 out of 5 stars Just for the curious...........2006-08-07

While I'm glad that these two albums have been released as a 2 for 1 CD, I'm not really recommending them for anyone but die-hard Doors fans. I've had both of these on vinyl for years. I find Other Voices almost completely unlistenable and think that Full Circle has three very good songs on it.

The main problem here is the vocals, handled by Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger. What were they thinking? Neither of them can sing, especially Manzarek, who actually has a good voice, but tries too hard to sound like a Soul man and a boogie-woogie rock-n-roll man. His vocals are embarassing, and this is even more sad given how well he could sing the Jim Morrison Doors' songs. Guitarist Robby Krieger isn't much better, though I certainly can tolerate his thin, nasally voice much more than Manzarek's deep baritone voice. At least I don't feel like turning the music off when Krieger sings. Still, Manzarek and Kreiger should not have thought that they could replace Morrison as singer. It was silly!! It would have been like Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler taking over lead vocal duties after Ozzy left Black Sabbath.

I have tried to listen to Other Voices, but have been so unimpressed as what little I heard, that I didn't bother to go back and give it another listen. It would have been too painful.

Full Circle, however, has about three very good songs on it. The Mosquito starts off kind of humorous (intentionally humorous, I may add) with Krieger singing in Spaniash (or Mexican, I can't tell the difference) about a very annoying mosquito that is making it tough for him to enjoy his burrito. Most of the song is filled with some very exciting jamming between Krieger, Manzarek and Densmore. Densmore in particular sounds more awake and excited on this track than on any other tune on both albums. Densmore helped write the next track, The Piano Bird, which is a very laid back, jazzy tune and one of my favorite songs here. Not very Doors-like, but good nonetheless. I can even tolerate Ray's singing on it! It Slipped My Mind is another very good song...it's catchy, has a good, bluesy guitar riff to it and musically would not have sounded out of place on L.A. Woman. Other than these three songs and some exciting musical passages here and there on the first half of Full Circle, the rest of this is pretty lousy. I don't think that Jim Morrison was the Doors or vice-versa, but The Doors were certainly MUCH MUCH better with him and more focused musically. And Morrison wasn't just a singer (and a poet), he was also a presence, something that Manzarek and Krieger definitely are not. And some of the song titles...Jim Morrison never would have let The Doors title one of their songs ' I'm Horny, I'm Stoned '!

For curious Doors fans only and not for the faint of heart...

2 out of 5 stars Riders IN A Storm.......2006-07-02

I had these originals when they were released on vinyl & got the twofer years ago from a Russian bloke I know. I only recommend this twofer for hardcore collectors, Other then that it is just music by a band without their lead singer. Visit my mini site by searching msn for "Judemac Forever".

Add Smokey Robinson to the list of sophisticated crooners sidestepping the race to rack up songwriter credits in favor of revisiting standards. Don't add him to the list of well-loved pop statesmen willing to let a team of backing musicians do the heavy lifting, though. With Timeless Love, Smokey situates himself in a candle-lit lounge of the mind: these may be other artists' songs, but he sketches in the details with the very stuff of his soul. Which, as anybody who's ever sung along to "The Tracks of My Tears" knows, is leagues more potent than most. Heart-stabbingly so. In Frank Sinatra's quite capable hands, for example, "Fly Me to the Moon" is a bawdy, puff-chested romp; in Smokey's it's a tender celebration of blinding love (ditto for "I've Got You Under My Skin"). Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," meanwhile, becomes less brooding and more pleading as he ups the romantic balladeer quotient--there's something in the twists and turns of that gorgeous, trembling tenor. While Smokey, at 67, is still able to run vocal circles around many of the artists more closely associated with these numbers, it's with his own song, "I Love Your Face," that he threatens to do the most damage to the already weak-kneed. Couples in black tie might have been swirling around him as he recorded this disc: dim the lights and sway accordingly. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Sets it's own standard..........2007-06-11

This does not play well as background music. You simply want to stop and listen to every note.

I have other versions of these classics, including recordings by Sinatra and Torme as well as others, and I appreciate their ability to evoke specific feelings of time and place with their versions of these durable standards. Smokey's own interpretations are personal, intimate and romantic. You can tell that he wants to sing these songs, that they have somehow touched him deeply and he wants to tell their stories in his own voice. His versions have the ability to fire your imagination with romantic notions.

I was initially reluctant to purchase this recording based on other reviews, but find that now that I have, I reach for it again and again.

Smokey's version of the classics really doesn't need comparison to anyone else's interpretations of these timeless jewels, his is unique and beautiful in its own right.

2 out of 5 stars Not even a good attempt........2007-04-11

When will artist realize you can't change the old classics. The only successfull R&B group to sing the classic "Night and day" to their own beat was the Temptations CD "What women want" the best rendition I have ever heard. Smokey does have the voice for these kinds of songs. Another good CD with classics is Willie Nelson's Stardust.

3 out of 5 stars Smokey is Timeless yet misplaced.......2007-04-01

Smokey's voice is exquisitely, melodiously, beautiful, but I did not enjoy listening to him sing songs I associate with other artists especially Frank Sinatra. I now know I only enjoy Smokey singing his signature songs from my past, just like he did in the 2006 concert of his that I attended. Had I listened to any of the cuts before purchasing the CD, I would not have purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Just Keeps Getting Better!.......2007-03-18

I've been a Smokey fan for most of my life and I truly appreciate the genius of both the man and his music. I expected this CD to be good because over the years, I have learned to expect nothing less from him. However, the word "good" doesn't even come close to describing the experience of listening to this music. It's an incredible compilation of songs to which he lends his special touch and the result is truly amazing. I have often thought after listening to one of his songs that he can't possibly get any better, but Smokey continues to deliver music that touches the heart, the mind and the spirit in a way that others can only aspire to achieve.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-01-10

Smokey sings the standards with a pleasant and slight difference. All the cuts are so very good, the very best being "I Love Your Face".

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Following her remarkably beautiful and top-selling crystal-bowl meditation CDs, heralded by critics, customers, and even Dr. Wayne Dyer, sound healer and teacher Deborah Van Dyke presents Travelling the Sacred Sound Current, audio companion to her instructive and finely wrought book of the same name. Van Dyke's musical offering, used in conjunction with the book or as a standalone tool, moves beyond relaxation and entertainment value into the realm of spiritual and therapeutic practice and purpose. Based on sound scientific principle--Dr. Andrew Weil's Sound Body, Sound Mind is highly recommended to this end--Van Dyke uses frequencies and tones to promote maximal benefit to body, mind, and spirit. These nine pieces bring together ancient mantras and chants, crystal bowl tones, drums, and didgeridoo, as well as nature sounds and Peruvian whistles, to create the thread-work of a profoundly interactive listening experience. Travelling the Sacred Sound Current resonates with deep beauty, peace, and truth. Neither far afield in woo-woo content nor loftily academic, Van Dyke's work is a welcome invitation, likely to appeal to both the intensive meditation student and the casual or novice seeker. --Paige La Grone

PLANETLIGHTWORKER Magazine, Oct/03, Editor's review: "Sometimes in life when I'm faced with the experience of otherworldly beauty I am simply awestruck, - to the point of being left speechless. This is one of those moments.

Deborah Van Dyke has created one of the most glorious New Age recordings I can remember. Crafted through the use of some very natural textures, its poetic rhythms are sensual and astonishingly pure. There is a complexity to the CD that is as unique as each human life. In just the first few breaths of listening I could feel the sweetest altering of my physical body taking place. A shift in posture, an expansion of my senses, and a fluttering of excitement in my heart's heart. The naturalness, the eloquent harmony and echo, all come together to offer such a tremendous gift to creation. For centering, grounding, gifting, doing healing work with others, Travelling the Sacred Sound Current intuitively knows the listener's need and exceeds that requirement with a universal gift of transformation".

*****UPDATE: Deborah's NEWEST CD RELEASE now available on Amazon.com: 'CHORDS OF THE COSMOS: Harmonies of the Zodiac with Crystal Bowls for Chakra Balancing, Meditation & the Healing Arts'.

4 out of 5 stars takes me to nirvana.......2007-01-29

Great for yoga and/or meditation. The only thing I'd change is the talking on the last track--I find it's distracting. Otherwise, I'd rate it five stars. My classes love it.

1 out of 5 stars Sounds of Light was better.......2006-12-26

There's too much caterwauling in this one. Not for meditation, maybe as a quiet background for ambience, I dunno. It didn't quite inspire any transcendental experiences for me.

3 out of 5 stars Inaccurate, but a good listen.......2005-11-08

I like this album, it is soothing and meditative. The music is compelling and the vocals are pleasant. Unfortunately, I can't give it a higher rating, because some of the Sanskrit words are incorrectly pronounced. I'm not trying to be picky, but you'd think that Deborah who's written a book on healing music would know how to pronounce the lyrics of her songs. With that in mind, the album is quite good.
namaste :)

4 out of 5 stars Very good if you like Indian mantras.......2005-08-12

The album is very enjoyable to listen to. If you like a meditative type of music. Several songs are chants (or mantras) that have been put to music. I liked this one very much.

5 out of 5 stars .......2005-01-31

I learned to pronounce Divine names I read in spiritual books,
but never heard chanted before, from this CD.
As a woman, following the voice of a women guide
was easier for me to echo, then male chants.
It is the perfect CD to play and chant along while ringing
my own crystal bowls and sets a relaxing, prayerful mood
before going to sleep, for me.

Like 1999's tribute to Gram Parsons, Return of the Grievous Angel, this successful collection revives the tired "tribute" concept and applies it in homage to a key figure in country music. Interpreting songs from across Hank Williams's short and troubled career, a range of high-profile artists use different approaches with equally gratifying results. Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow, and Hank Williams III play familiar songs with traditional arrangements (Ms. Crow's yodel is an eye opener); Beck, Mark Knopfler, and Keb' Mo' stay closer to their own idioms. Keith Richards's reedy vocal makes "You Win Again" all his own, and Bob Dylan, who has only rarely lent his services to these sorts of projects, leads his touring band through a blues shuffle on "I Can't Get You Off of My Mind." The estimable Lost Highway label has assembled an illustrious cast to sing the praises of the artist who inspired its name, and in doing so it has created a far better testament to its musical mindset than can ever be captured in the term Americana. --Rob Stewart

1 out of 5 stars All Sizzle No Steak.......2006-10-10

Unlike many "die hard" C&W fans reviewing this album who do not like this becasue they want contemporary dorks singing Hank's calssics or they never heard of artists like Beck; I hate this cd for other reasons. The main one is becasue it blows. A legend being covered by a star-studded lineup would make you doubt this review but it's true. I love Petty, Beck, Dylan and others on here and I also love great county music. Sadly, none of this matters here as the songs are lifeless, awkward, and depressing. It is a $3 cd at best with no songs worthy of any quality jukebox nor has any redeeming value for completists who want the rare b-side. If you must, download Emmylou's "Alone and Forsaken" as it is the best song of the bunch (and that aint sayin much)

5 out of 5 stars not country, not supposed to be.......2006-08-10

I think you country fans are being a little hard on this one. I think the point of this album is to, not only pay tribute to THE greatest singer songwriter of all time, but to introduce him to people who may not otherwise have heard his music. Who wants to hear Bocephus sing more of his daddys songs? He's done that already. When Hank Sr. Was alive and making music , there were only really 2 types of popular music (as opposed to the virtually limitless styles we have now ) being made: country & blues, both styles Hank openly embraced. So this album also pays tribute to that very same spirit of experimenting and cross-pollenation. Every artist on this album is notorious for dipping their respective feathers in many musical inks. Tom Petty, Keith Richards,Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams & Hank III's contributions are the standouts to me , but there isn't one bad tune here. Anyone with a genuine love for Music, will appreciate 'Timeless'. Maybe modern ''Country'' artists like Toby Keith, Travis Tritt ,Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney etc. should take notice of this one ,organize a stellar and respectful tribute the way Mr.Bob Dylan did here, and pay a little of their own respect to the Long Gone Daddy that made it possible for their music to be heard today.

5 out of 5 stars Truly, A "Timeless" Album!!.......2005-06-28

Boy,when I first listened to this tribute to the famous Hank Williams Sr., I thought, "Wow, how different this is!".
I gotta tell ya, all the artist's on there do a fatastic job!
Tom Petty's version of "You're Gonna Change (Or I'm Gonna Leave) to my estimation is about the best cut on the album. Emmylou Harris' version's of "Lost on the River" and "Alone and Forsaken" are just wonderfull and Emmylou's version of "Alone and Forsaken" is about the best version I have heard of that song by another artist.
I do have to say that the worst of all takes on the album is Johnny Cash's "I Dreamed About Mama Last Night". Thank goodness it's the last song on the album. Maybe it is because I never liked the song in the first place. I do like Johnny though.
The true Hank Sr. fan will love this ablum. Especially if your a music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Some great, some good, all interesting.......2005-03-26

Hank Williams is arguably the all-time best American singer-songwriter and he sings his songs better than anybody else. That being said, it's interesting to see what several modern singers do with a collection of Hank's songs.

I think two of the interpretations are outstanding. Emmylou Harris is splendid on "Alone and Forsaken." She turns the song into a folk tune from Merrie Olde England with the tasty and tuneful backing of Mike Henderson on mandolin and Mark Knopfler on guitar. I also thought Keith Richards' tortured and eccentric interpretation of "You Win Again" was better than good -- although I concede the point to another reviewer that Jerry Lee Lewis did the song even better. Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow, and Lucinda Williams also sing songs well. Hell, Hank's songs are so good that about anyone could sing them and sound pretty good.

3 out of 5 stars this is ok' but not at all the greatest........2004-09-23

this is an ok album but it sure lacks being great. i mean how can you have a tribute to a country star. and for damm sure hank williams sr. who is the king of country music and will always be. with out haveing more country stars? and i think we all know bocephus should have been on here. its got some good songs by some great artists. but hey come on wake up here. wheres george strait? alan jackson? dwight yoakam. hank jr?. i could name many more. but i will say this about the album tom petty does a good job. and johnny cash is the only country artist on here. real country anyways.

5 out of 5 stars A "Best Of" Collection.......2007-05-20

If you are unfamiliar with 2002, and would like a sampling of some of their work, this album is for you. If you are a fan of 2002 and would like a collection of some of their best work, this album is for you. There's nothing new on this CD. It's a collection of tracks from all of their previous albums.

I would describe 2002 as "Meditation New Age". The more cynical, un-appreciative listener would describe 2002 as "sleepy time" music.

The music of 2002 is all instrumental, relaxing, and melodic. Their music is quiet and easy listening, but most of all......beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD for Parents of Babies and Young Children.......2007-03-15

I love this CD and so does everyone we've given it to as a gift. I especially like "Waltzing with Bears."

5 out of 5 stars Stardreamer.......2007-03-08

The CD arrived looking fine. It was a gift of lullabies for a friend who has baby twins. She reports that she and they all love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for children and adults.......2007-03-06

This is one of my all-time favorite children's CDs, though it's very enjoyable for adults, too, especially if you like folk music. It seems that most vocal lullaby albums feature soprano singers, and, being a contralto myself, it's so refreshing to listen to a singer with a more mellow, warm, lower voice. It's also much easier for me to sing along in these keys! If you'd like to check out other albums for kids, do look into Lullaby: A Collection (Music for Little People), or anything by Susie Tallman and Friends.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful for children and adults alike!.......2007-02-03

My first experience with Priscilla Herdman...and what an impression! I didn't want to return this to the library; neither did my children, ages 2 and 6. Her beautiful, clear, crisp voice with simple, yet rich harmonies and melodies expose kids to the art of folk music and classic rhyme. I've always sung to my children...now I have perfect company! This is my new gift for all parents!

5 out of 5 stars Herdman is magic for children.......2006-10-05

I play this for my grandchildren - and for me. The kids love Herdman's very distinctive approach and relate well to her music. And you know what? So do I. Great music for young and old.
