Although they'd recorded for the Rolling Stones' Brian Jones and played with jazz supremo Ornette Coleman, Morocco's Master Musicians had never really been caught in true sonic clarity until producer Bill Laswell visited them in their village of Jajouka to document their music. And clear it is; the interplay of instruments, drums, and voices is captured with stunning fidelity, bringing their particular brand of trance music right into your living room. The musicians, under the leadership of Bachir Attar, are in superb form, doing what's been done for almost as long as history itself. They feel the music, making for a natural flow on Attar's compositions, which sound as old as the Rif Mountains where they're performed. If you want to hear the Master Musicians as they really are, this is the record to buy. --Chris Nickson

Dark, panic-stricken sounds from the mountains of Morrocco.......2000-07-16
I first heard this music in my friend's basement surrounded by a thick cloud of pot smoke. My God! Since then I've had the privilege to see them live at the Montreal Jazz Festival and now I'm hooked.
The people of Jajouka perform this incredible music in reverance to the Horned God Pan. The tracks range from mellow to manic, but always with a dark tinge. They use a type of horn that they play with sustained notes, nice and eerie sounding. And of course, rhythms to danse yourself into a frenzy.
This is some of the finest ritualistic music I've ever heard. Check out their other CDs as well.
Endurance Music.......1998-05-18
This music requires strength. The musicians must have the stamina to maintain extended notes and rhythms that can last for hours in their native performances. Using simple drums, pipes, and strings, the Master Musicians of Jajouka are legendary for their trance-induction ceremonies of wild abandon. These tracks are but tiny samples of their wares; still, they are rich, complex, and other-worldly.

breathless.......2006-05-31
The sound from harnoy;s cello is enough to make me cry. she produces such tone and anyone that doesnt agree is uneducated. what can i say elanor rigby the phrassing outstanding ofra has been and still is one of my favorite cellist.
Beatles Like I've Never Heard Before.......2005-02-10
I borrowed this CD from the library out of curiosity and what a delightful suprise. The interpretation of Beatles music is wonderfully simple - I especially love the different variations done with the same tune in some of the pieces giving them a fresh sound. Harmonies between cello and violin in "Norwegian Wood", "Across the Universe" and "Girl" are mesmerising. Mostly played with a slow tempo, this is great soothing music after a stressful day. This CD is definitely worth purchasing for a twist in popular Lennon-McCartney compositions.
4 stars for song selection, otherwise 5 stars for interpretation.
Interesting Cover, but Bad CD.......2004-06-05
I can not believe that Ofra is even famous. Her playing is so stiff and lacks phrasing. Her tone quality is horrible. The only reason that she makes recordings is because her father is rich and he bought her a several million dollar cello and paid symphony orchestras to let her play solos with them. But, it is interesting to hear a cellist play the Beatles. Only buy this CD if you have boughten every cd on this webstite and have a little money left over.
Beautiful and Relaxing.......2004-05-21
The Beatles and Ofra Harnoy! The best of both worlds! What more could you ask for? A friend gave me this CD, and I have enjoyed listening to this right before bedtime every night. Ms. Harnoy, I applaud you for making some of the finest renditions of my favorite Beatles tunes. If you're a semi-professional classical musician like me and you don't have this in your CD collection, you're missing out--Big Time!!! 5 + stars for a wonderful CD!!!!
Lovely and powerful.......2002-01-01
Before you write this off as another attempt to "muzak" the Beatles, listen to Harnoy's lovely playing on "She's Leaving Home," "Across The Universe" and "Girl" and see if you still feel that way once you've heard them. A great set of interpretations by a most evocative cellist.

Album Description
Legendary Australian guitarist Brett Garsed serves up a big helping of solo delights on "Big Sky," his latest musical offering. On a large canvas fitting for a grand Monet, Garsed once again paints a musical landscape using large and brilliant brushstrokes highlighted by subtle colors and fine detail. Fittingly titled "Big Sky," the new album satisfies as it delivers extraordinary playing from the trio of Garsed, Ric Fierabracci (bass) and Toss Panos (drums). The trio's versatility is aptly demonstrated across the CD's ten tracks of melody-infused instrumental rock music. Rich textures are combined with bursts of sound and other-worldly playing, lending credence to the album's title. Over an hour's worth of enjoyment is provided; every track provides a new element or dimension to the music. Garsed has a real talent and this album reveals the `substance' in his playing. His style and technique are varied, but unmistakably Brett. He lets it rip on "Fu'd Fight" and "The Myth" while "Got The Horn" features some truly inspired playing by all three (check out the bass!). A few subtle moments are also included, rounding out a creative and remarkable recording. This album is not one to be passed over.
Customer Reviews:
big Brett - BIG Sound.......2006-02-24
Brett never fails to impress me with his skill and sound. I have followed him from his early days at the front of the John Farnham band and now out on his own. Great CD to listen to in the car on a long drive. He even has a new fan in my 18 year old son, who is a budding guitarist.
Well worth a listen to anyone who loves the Prog Rock sounds of Yes, whilst I am not saying he is in that class yet, he sure as hell is knocking on the door...
Outstanding album.......2005-10-11
This is another totally otstanding release from Brett Garsed, if only people discovered his work so he could reach out to a wider aduience this guy would be on everyother guitarmagazine frontpage.
If you like instrumental music, fusion with rock "touch" to it ... then you are in for a treat, if you are into guitarplayers then you have to have everything you can get your hands on with Brett Garsed.Only his music could describe it fairly so go ahead and buy everything you can get, and you will end up like me, listening at home to it, in the car, on your work ..hehehe
And do not forget to visit his homepage where you can get much more information about other cd's he has appeared in.
One of the most talented guitarist ever in MHO
Brett is Unique.......2005-06-04
Brett's songs, tone, phrasing and style are beautiful. He should be huge. He can do anything from pop to prog to fusion. Check him out on uncle moes space ranch. Ridiculous. Also check out his playing on Derek Sherinian's planet x. Beautiful playing. My favorite guitarist. His 1st solo albulm is an experience. The ambient tunes are my favorite. Very soulfull.
www.brettgarsed.com.......2005-03-11
Ok, For me, this is one of the best albums i own, and definately the best guitar instrumental album i have. The meodies and sense of space he creates i have not heard in guitar music like this before, it is seriously unreal, he really does focus on the song, which is excelent. anyone that has come to brett through his work with farnham knows what an unreal guitarist he is, with this album though, it shows that he has a real gift not only in technique and style, but in creating something very special to listen to. all the songs are excellent and i would highly HIGHLY implore you all to buy it or go to his website and try it. This album does not dissapoint for a reason.
sublime instrumental guitar music.......2004-06-08
Aussie guitarist Brett Garsed should be a familiar name to those with an interest in guitar oriented fusion. 'Big Sky' is Garsed's first solo offering, and it does not disappoint. The musicianship is of course, nothing short of exquisite. Garsed himself has a very fluid guitar style and a knack for conjuring intensely melodic phrasings. Bassist Ric Feirabracci and stickman Toss Panos compliment Garsed wonderfully and never overplay or let their obvious talents get in the way of the song. Garsed's tone is warm and fitting within the context of the music. Needless to say, the album is entirely instrumental. I find the following cuts the most rewarding:
1. Undoing - A biting fusion number. Stunning opening, an excellent example of Garsed's keen melodic sense. The song changes direction half-way through and takes a somewhat more ambient, experimental direction and is very evocative. One of the more challenging cuts on the album.
3. Brothers - Superb ballad. Fierabracci serves up a very fitting bass solo and Garsed's bluesy solo near the end of the song climaxes perfectly. Often i find myself scrambling for the rewind button just to hear the solo over and over.
4. Drowning - Powerful, sprawling and ultimately epic song. Wonderfully evocative. The 'gurgely' tone Garsed uses 4:15 in really convery the sense of someone actually drowning, slipping away under water. Fierabracci's bass runs give a whole new dimension to the song, as does Panos's fitting drumming.
9. Friend or Foe - Probably the most accessible song along with Breathe (No. 6). Quite a rocky, anthemic song. Garsed's melodic phrasing again stands out the most. The guitar lines are very very hummable.
10. Big Sky - The last song of the album as well as my favourite cut. Takes a couple of listens to really unpack, but is well worth the investment. Also the longest song on them album, clocking in at a lengthy 8:43. Despite Garsed's smoking soloing, I find this song quietly reflective and by far the most rewarding song on the album. The band really smokes in the last half of the song. The subtle acoustic strumming is divine and the interplay between the musicians displays the grosse talent each member possess.
Whilst I have failed to mention the other songs, they are still all worthy tracks. F'ud Fight and Got the Horn I find to be strangely reminiscant of Steve Vai, but with a far greater deal of subtlety and less compulsion for pointless experimentation and overblowen guitar solos. GTH also has a really fat, pimping bass solo in it, great fun. The Myth is a nice fusion cut. Conversely, the drumming on Breathe is strangely dull and uninspiring, and i find myself somewhat detracted from an otherwise excellent song. And lastly, Trinity is almost an ambient number that i sometimes find a little testing. These two minor quibbles are perhaps the only negatives to be found on this album.
It goes without saying, guitarists and those with an interest in guitar oriented music have the most to gain from this album. However, that is not to imply that this music is inaccessable. On the contrary, lovers of music in general will find this album has a great deal to offer. Garsed never wanders into the territory of excess, and instead plays primarily for the song, not his ego. Sadly however, very few people will ever be exposed to this wonderful musical statement. Very highly recommended.

Great Contemporary Christian Soft Rock on show.......2005-06-19
I came across this duo around the same time I listened to Sky Harbor and Switchfoot and decided to get this CD. The end result after listening to this CD release 3 times is these two guys are talented and make a supreme combination. Their belief in God shines through the lyrics that they both penned. Their love of God is heard through their music. These two lads are talented and it is a pleasure to listen to this CD. This is not mindless sounds but beautiful chemistry.
I enjoyed the songs of 'Give It All Away', When I Open My Eyes', 'Broken World' and 'Persistance'. But all the songs are good and the messages are about our relationship with God and how he loves us and comes to us in need. Beautiful album indeed.
Amazing.......2005-01-20

Awesome CD!!.......2003-11-18
This CD really rocks! I was recommended this CD by a friend, and after I listened to one of their songs, I was hooked. These songs are awesome, and they provide a great mix of the heavy themes with some lighthearted songs thrown in the bunch. "Everywhere she Goes" is one of my favorite light songs and "Broken World", "Persistence", and "Give it All Away" are my favorite serious ones. You can really feel these guys' love for God through their awesome music!

One to avoid.......2007-05-15
OK, first let me say taht I am a huge fan of Air Supply and always will be. The boys have been making alot of records for alot of years and I am sorry not everything they release and write is not their greatest work ever! This album was a different type of work for Air Supply in which in my eyes was a bit of a failure. I just did not connect with it at all. Graham Russell is still a VERY talented musician and he made me never doubt that after he released his first solo album "The Future" years after the release of this album. It is true that Russell is not able to sing like he used to but the man is getting older. I agree with a previous post that Graham is realizing this and writing to cater to Russell's voice as of now. I still love Russell's voice and will buy any future Air Supply albums (There is one due fall of '07). Now you might be saying, there is no way he is a fan trashing an album by Air Supply...but I am a fan and always will be but I am a realist too. There is alot of incredible music from Air Supply that you can buy but this is one to avoid. Air Supply's finest album? "The Vanishing Race" easily!
(el 2do A place where be belong)
Aunque TODOS estan buenisimos. Ni hablar de I'll found you y You belong to me, excelentes.
Sinceramente. Florencia-Argentina.
Some things we need to know some things we need to see.......2004-10-08
Wow, I've read some interesting reviews here for Across The Concrete Sky, and I decided that I had to share my opinon about this CD too. If you are a true fan of Air Supply then you know that Russell and Graham are very different individuals who bring their amazing talents together to make their amazing sounds and music. ATCS is a different CD. It appeals to the Heart. It appealed strongly to my heart. When I first heard these songs sung live many of the songs put tears in my eyes. We Are All Children Covered in Mud...I hope that I never grow so old that I don't feel that inner child in me that always needs to be loved. We all need a Place Where We Belong. Finding our way in the world is not always easy...it's comforting to know that we are not the only one that struggles with the feeling of wanting to belong. For several months my daughter and my grandchildren were missing. I played "I'll Find You" EVERY day until they returned. This song gave me strength to endure, it reminded me that love would remain even between the unseen faces of loved ones. I took great comfort from this song. How boring it would be if every artist sang every song exactly the same way every single time that they sang a song. I appreciate ATCS for the variety of songs and vocal ranges. I have listened to many many Las Vegas concerts and find that Russell's voice is OUT of this world! And the sweet soft voice of Graham brings me a feeling of love and joy every time that I hear him. Air Supply's greatest legacy is their Legacy of Love...and I'm glad for the several copies of this cd that I own and have given as gifts. Everyone can relate if they just listen to the words. You will draw meaning from every song and you will be deligted that you purchased Across The Concrete Sky!!
A Must for Air Supply fans!.......2004-08-06
While I found the last few Air Supply releases to be disappointing, this is finally the album that Air Supply fans have been waiting for. It's a return to their best work. The songs are beautiful, especially Come to Me, Shadow of the Sun, A Place Where We Belong, and Goodnight. They really have their best sound back. Even if you've been less than thrilled with their latest releases, don't be afraid to get this one. If you're a fan, you won't be sorry!
BUEN ALBUM... PERO PUDO SER MEJOR...¡.......2004-07-01
CONCRETE SKY .. CONCEPTUALMENTE ES DE LOS MEJORES QUE AIR SUPPLY HA HECHO... PERO A MI ENTENDER, TIENE ALGUNOS DETALLES:1)GRAHAM CANTA CASI TODOS LOS TEMAS.. LO CUAL NO ME PARECE PORQUE.. LO QUE DEFINE A AIR SUPPLY, ES LA VOZ DE RUSSELL. 2)LA VOCALISTA QUE INCLUYERON ES BUENA, PERO TIENE DEMASIADO PROTAGONISMO EN LOS TEMAS... LO QUE DESVIRTUA UN POCO, EL ESTILO DE LA BANDA. 3)NO ESTOY DE ACUERDO CON QUE GRAHAM ESCRIBA TODOS LOS TEMAS DEL ALBUM.. DEBERIA HABER CABIDA A CANCIONES DE OTROS COMPOSITORES. POR LO DEMAS, ME ALEGRA QUE RUSSELL HAYA RECOBRADO ALGO DE SU TIMBRE DE VOZ CONOCIDO, Y DE SU RANGO VOCAL... SE PUEDE NOTAR ESTO EN SHADOW OF THE SUN, Y FEEL LIKE SCREAMING .. DOS DE LOS MEJORES TRACKS DEL ALBUM... EL CUAL ES AL MENOS... MUCHO MEJOR QUE EL YOURS TRULY...SINCERAMENTE ESTE ULTIMO, ES PARA OLVIDARLO...¡ SALUDOS...¡

Customer Reviews:
Just a remarkably beautiful CD.......2003-02-22
This music was written for a dance-theater piece, so it has the musical flow of grace in it. the combination of electronic and acoutic instrumentaion is remarkable. Often when these types of sounds are combined, one (usually the electronic) overshadows the other, and imbalances the music. Here, the balance is just right. The music itself reminds me of Oregon, but with the addition of the excellent synthesizer passages. If you liked Keven Keller's release, "Intermezzo", you will also like this one. If you have heard this one, and not "Intermezzo" I highly recommend it, also. Both these CDs are musically complex and incredibly interesting and melodic. I highly recommend this one.
