WHAT CAN I SAY?.......2007-07-05
Rest in Peace Dear Bubbles (1929-July 2, 2007).......2007-07-03
I met this singer last fall in New York. A few months later, I saw her again hosting the opera quiz at the Met. Little did I know that about five months later, she would forever rest in the peace that she deserved for so long. Rest in peace Beverly. And brava...brava for the many years of wonderful singing that you gave us.
two beautiful discs!.......2007-02-18
Good example of the "Art of Beverly Sills".......2007-01-27
The first CD focuses on her operatic singing. The CD begins with a selection from Thomas' "Mignon," culminating in "Je suis Titania la blonde." Her voice is light and clear. She displays great agility. In the middle of this piece, she shows a decent but not great trill; she closes the "cut" with a series of terrific trills. Her ornamentation is nicely done.
Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix" was another of Sills' characters. "Ah! Tardai troppo. . .O luce di quest'anima" features more clean vocalization. The florid singing is nicely done, with well sung high notes and additional sound trills. A very agile voice on display! From Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor," Sills sings "Regnava nel silenzio. . .Quando rapito in estasi." Her voice is smooth. In the aria, she produces a set of trill after trill, each one well done, but in their totality almost overdone (I love trills, but there were almost too many!). "Quando rapito in estasi" is well sung, with much well done florid singing, with appoggiaturas, trills, and other ornamentation.
The remainder of the CD features selections from Bellini's "I Puritani," and Donizetti's "Roberto Devereux," "Maria Stuarda," and "Anna Bolena." I can say pretty much the same about these pieces as already stated before. Excellent technique, wonderful ornamentation.
The second CD begins with the redoubtable piece, sung by "Olympia," from Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffmann." Well done, with good vocal effects, catching the mechanical aspects of the music. Other pieces on this side come from Mozart, Heuberger, Moore, Korngold, and so on.
One piece worth mentioning, because it captures her approach to a lighter work, from Lehar's "The Merry Widow." She sings the song for what it is, and does not overwhelm it with her voice. Compare with what Richard Tucker did to the enjoyable but rather light song, "What Now My Love?", when he essayed singing pop tunes. Enjoyable for the thrill of his voice; pretty grisly in terms of his overwhelming the music itself. That does not happen here; there is a certain pathos in Sills' singing, as warranted by the song. It suggests the range of her singing.
All in all, a good sampling of "The Art of Beverly Sills." Hearing her voice again after many years reinforces my preexisting view that she ranks as one of the best coloratura sopranos of the past fifty years. There are terrific contemporary singers who sing the same repertoire and do it well. But Beverly Sills certainly compares very well with them. If interested in an introduction to Sillsiana, this is a good place to start.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Jesse Malin segued from a decade as frontman for NYC's D Generation, a band whose glam-metal pose was as ironic as it was misunderstood, to this reincarnation as shrewd, stripped-down Gotham singer-songwriter. Comparisons to Bruce Springsteen have already been floated, but Malin's sensibilities here are as subtly shaded and introspective as the Boss's are broad and declamatory. Midwifed by producer/ex-Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams, Malin's affection for the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Steve Earle is obvious, but filtered through a savory, pop-conscious mélange of musical textures that evoke everything from Motown to Tex-Mex. Malin's lyrical sense is no less evocative, with simple lines conjuring up worlds of possibilities. It's a debut whose heartfelt country-by-way-of-Delancey-Street songs may bolster notions that irony is indeed dead in the post-9/11 world, but also one whose honesty of voice and purpose ensures the wake will be brief. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
The Fine Art of Self-Destruction features 12 original songs written and sung by Malin (ex-D Generation). Ryan Adams (Whiskeytown) contributes guitar and vocals on almost every track and Melissa Auf der Maur (Hole, Smashing Pumpkins) contributes background vocals. The album was released on October 22 in the UK where is has already garnered critical acclaim in Q (4 *'s), NME, Mojo and Uncut (album of the month for November), among others. The London Saturday Times said, "(Ryan) has turned producer on a spectacular debut by his New York friend and neighbor, Jesse Malin. Adams reckons that Malin is a 'genius'. Adam Duritz of Counting Crows says that this is the best album he has heard all year. Believe the hype. Malin writes vivid songs with killer tunes and sings them with scary conviction. There is simply nothing more than you could demand from a great rock record. Buy it. 5 out of 5 *'s."Album Description
Artemis Records is proud to present the stunning debut album from native New Yorker Jesse Malin. Produced by Ryan Adams, the album features guests Melissa Auf Der Maur (Smashing Pumpkins, Hole) Joe McGinty (Ween, Spacehog, Psychedelic Furs) and Ryan himself. In the end there's dancing, songs and smiles........2007-01-21
It also found Bob Geldof moving on to darker themes. Granted, the first two albums played with themes of suicide and paranoia, but for every "Living On an Island" on "Tonic," there was also a more lighthearted "She's So Modern." On "The Fine Art Of Surfacing," the songs are still often exuberant and hook laden, but thematically, never quite as chipper. It makes for some great songs again, especially "Wind Chill Factor Minus Zero" and "Sleep (Fingers' Lullaby)." "Surfacing" was the last excellent Rats album. While "Mondo Bongo" had its moments, the Boomtown Rats' records after this were never as even or as exciting.
I do have a quibble about the re-master on "Surfacing." It seems to have been mastered way too "hot" for some of the songs. The drums and percussion compress out - especially on "Someone's Looking At You" and "Wind Chill Factor Minus Zero" - and distort. For a re-master, that's bad news.
Way too digital.......2006-12-13
The Fine Art of the Boomtown Rats.......2006-11-05
Everyone loves "Mondays", but "Diamond Smiles" is my friends all time fave and I will always love "Having My Picture Taken" or maybe "Sleep" or maybe, well, every song on this record is good.
This is a GREAT album.
an excellent bit of the "new wave".......2005-07-12
Greatest album, but..........2005-06-03
BUT, To disagree with the reviewer below. Episode 3 is screwed up. The Episode 3 part was indeed on the end of the album. But the 'That's not funny, I'm not laughing' part was at the end of side 1 (after Sleep). Why it was taken off it's rightful place and put after the 'This concludes episode 3', the true end of the album is beyond me.
But, how can I complain. This was probably THE greatest rock album not available on CD, and now it is, and it sounds great!

One of the best CD's out there!.......2007-05-10
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-03-25
The singing of both ballads and catches belongs to a long and venerable tradition in England. The natural habitat of the of the catch was the tavern, while the ballad was known in a wider variety of social settings as well as the stage. By the end of the 17th century, ballads were collected by connoisseurs of popular culture and published in anthologies. The main source for this recording, 'The Catch Club, or 'Merry Companions', was printed in 1762.
A quote from the catch-philosopher (of 'Come, come let us drink') is offered by the Baltimore Consort: "...wine and good cheer will in spite of our fear inspire our hearts with mirth..the time we live, to wine let us give, since we all must turn to earth...."
This is an excellent collection of songs; quite interesting and varied. The instruments are played skillfully, and the voices, for the most part, are good quality. However, as with all 'folk-like' songs, the diction is not always clear, and that is very true of several of these on this disc. The female voices were more difficult to comprehend much of the time. The text is printed out, so ultimately familiararity will make them easier to understand. I do like the disc, and think that it needed to be done.As to a previous criticism concerning the fact that it wasn't 'true' barroom singing. Of course, it's not!!!If it were, you would not understand any of it!!!!!Enough said.

The Baltimore Consort play with life and vigour, with a good deal of improvisational flair, not being bound to texts and going through the production of notes as if mechanically. This is true to the spirit and nature of the early music, in which performers often had to 'play by ear', neither being able to read music nor having printed music even if they could. This is particularly true of the songs on this disc, where many are derivative of anonymous jokes and stories, and much of the music is likewise folk-tune and anonymously composed.
Some of the songs can be rather shocking. As Mary Anne Ballard writes in the accompanying notes, 'We must remember that in the days before indoor plumbing and pooper-scooper laws, everyday life was of an earthier flavour than it is today.... The men of the singing clubs and the ladies of stage poked fun at themselves and their companions with wit, pleasantry and contrivance.'
The names of many of the composers of these pieces have been lost to history, particularly the more folk-song oriented ones. However, some well-known composers are represented among the pieces here - Purcell, D'Urfey, Aldridge, and others.
The regular players include Mary Anne Ballard (viols), Mark Cudek (cittern, guitar, recorder and bass viol), Custer LaRue (vocalist/soprano), Larry Lipkis (recorder, viols), Ronn McFarlane (lute), Chris Norman (flutes), Webb Wiggins (tambourine and 'virginals'). Some artists are known from other Dorian productions, such as Ronn McFarlane on the lute in the collection 'Greensleeves'.
Added to the regular consort players are the Merry Companions, including Peter Becker (baritone), Alexander Blachly (baritone), Paul Shipper (bass, belch-canto), and James Weaver (baritone).
One more addition includes a guest artist, Lorenzo Labbrobacio, playing of all things, the 'fartophone', a rather mysterious instrument indeed. Labbrobacio defies identification on the internet other than references to this disc, and so the mystery deepens.
This is music that is interesting, truly fun to listen to, entertaining and has a quality about it that makes it a joy both in musical and humourous tones.
Sounds like they're singing Christmas carols.......2004-11-09

Rising Talents!.......2003-10-15
It also finds Bob Geldof moving on to darker themes. It makes for some great songs again, especially "Wind Cill Factor Minus Zero" and "Sleep (Fingers' Lullaby)." "Surfacing" was the last excellent Rats album, even though "Mondo Bongo" has its moments, the Boomtown Rats' records after this were never as even or as exciting.

Disappointing, with such talent on show........2005-05-10
The recorded sound is also overly bright for my taste.
In all, there are perhaps three tracks on this disc I would enjoy hearing again. The rest are well below expectations.
