5 out of 5 stars The Utica Flash.......2005-10-12

This was J.R.'s first album, recorded in 1956. All the tunes are originals, a risky undertaking for artist and recording company alike, but there was nothing to worry about here. These hard-bop tunes are all first-class. Monterose plays with a Sonny Rollins tenor sound, without any pretentions, especially in the lyricism department. Ira Sullivan's sound is closer to Miles than Clifford, with lots of Fats thrown in, and is a good addition to the proceedings. Horace Silver is on piano (he seems a bit tentative here), Wilbur Ware (b) and Philly Joe Jones (d). A good date that for some reason didn't lead to much additional work at the time. One wonders what the problem was. Great stuff, this.

5 out of 5 stars What a find........2005-10-10

The process. (...) I see this pop up under hard bop. I read the review, that concludes, "qualifies as one of the underappreciated gems in Blue Note's mid-'50s catalog." I had to buy it and boy (or girl) am I glad I did. It now sits in my classics cd rack.

5 out of 5 stars Ars longa . . . thank the gods.......2004-01-29

If it wasn't for those eclectics who make Internet radio the adventure it is, I would never have discovered tenor saxophonist "JR" Monterose. An admission that is, in equal parts, exhilarating (such neglected giants can be discovered) and depressing (that they could ever be neglected in the first place).

It was a chance encounter with his stunningly simple composition, "Waltz for Claire" that initially enticed me. Though there was some Sonny Rollins influence, as critics have acknowledged, I was also struck by a minimalist streak that reminded me of tenor man Teddy Edwards. But most impressively, he had a sound that was very much his own. Finding the CD "In Action, with the Joe Abodeely Trio" available at a surprisingly reasonable price, I bought it, figuring the single cut I liked would be worth it and anything else a bonus. After repeated listenings (including four times back to back the first time I put it on), I feel like one of those Wall Street traders with a big year end check in his pocket. In fact, of the six cuts (three originals, two standards and one improvisation on the chord changes of "All the Things You Are," aptly retitled "That You Are"), I'd be hard put to say I have a favorite. Each one is an individual essay in the art of tenor playing, the tempos vary and the moods shift-the only consistency is the excellence of the playing. I can say, however, that before hearing JR's version I had two well-loved and very different readings of "I Should Care," one by alto man Ernie Henry (with Kenny Dorham) and the other by the tenorist Brew Moore. Well, suffice it to say, I now have three.

While I've subsequently uncovered a small but quite distinguished JR discography (especially in terms of those he played with-check it out, you'll be surprised), this is the only known CD I've found featuring the "Joe Abodeely Trio." In large part, I suspect, because it was the house band at the "Tender Trap" in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (Joe Abodeely, proprietor). But on this recording, they provide JR with strong, sympathetic backing. More evidence, perhaps, that the truly great ones are in part great because they inspire the lesser talents around them to greatness.

In sum, I cannot recommend this disc too highly. It offers not only a profound musical experience, but a perspective on the vagaries of fate as well. Ars longa, vita brevis.

Addendum for J. R. fans: If you type "J.R. Montrose" instead of "J.R. Monterose" (which is the more common if not the correct spelling) in the Amazon popular music search you will be linked to a cd featuring the "J.R.[not Jack] Montrose Quartet" entitled "T. T. T." It's a live recording, 1988, of a gig at the famous Jazzhus in Copenhagen, with J.R. in peak form, ably abetted by Hod O'Brien on piano and a tight Danish section. Great music which I found totally by accident.

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Must Have For Any Jazz Fan!.......2003-08-08

This release of J.R. Monterose and this great group of jazz musicians was limited to 250 copies when it was sold as a "Studio 4" Lp at the cloakroom of "The Tender Trap" night club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Long a coveted article among collectors who have paid astronomical sums for even a used edition this music rates as a GREAT example of jazz in the '60s. It was recorded in 1964 and of course it represents J.R. at his very best!!!

      5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2002-07-12

I once asked Jimmy Garrison what he considered his best recording, and his response was this J.R. Monterose session, a tenor plus rhythm section outing that I frankly enjoy playing more than Rollins' "Saxophone Colossus." First, Monterose himself is ceaselessly engaging--completely melodic while eschewing predictability. He takes chances without hedging his bets, as his sound is robust and full, his articulations clear, his lines complete. Second, Flanagan is Flanagan--his single-note melodic structures expressing his unlimited lyricism as well as the personal touch and dynamic contouring that were unique to his playing. Third, even though the orginal album was an offbeat, unfamiliar label, the audio quality was as impressive as any I had heard on vinyl. The recording positioned me as a listener in the thick of the ensemble's extemporaneous creations--practically forcing me to concentrate on Pete LaRocca's spirited 4-bar drum breaks lest I miss my entrance. The cymbals sizzle and the bass walks right into your living room. Small wonder Jimmy was proud of this record.

      5 out of 5 stars Special Order Away -- It's Worth It.......2000-06-30

J.R. Monterose is fantastic tenor player who unfortunately is under-recorded and underappreciated. His biggest claim to fame was playing on Mingus' Atlantic debut "Pithecanthropus Erectus," and he also recorded a wonderful self-titled album for Blue Note (now oop on CD). This album features 5 Monterose orginals and two standards, and they are all awesome. Tommy Flanagan, whom he recorded with again in the 70s, knows just where to lead and follow Monterose. The quartet is completed by Jimmy Garrison and Pete LaRoca, both making early recorded appearences here. Just the personnel alone intrigued me enough to buy it, but the music is what keeps it in heavy rotation on my CD player.
