5 out of 5 stars What a find!.......2001-05-17

Peter Erskine's Lounge Art Ensemble is a group of fine musicians individually (Erskine [drums] eg Weather Report and lots of sessions; Bob Sheppard [saxes] session blower; Dave Carpenter [bass] session player usually on electric bass or guitar, but upright here). On "Lava Jazz" they captured the spontaneity of a small jazz combo in a '60s jazz club (Erskine effectively plays a 'cocktail drumkit'). Standard jazz tunes redone and renamed highlight the set including "Pesos" [Pennies from Heaven], "I Hear a Rap CD [I Hear a Rhapsody], "Jung at Heart" [Young at Heart], "Pretty Toes' {Perdido]... you get the idea. All the songs are well done, lyrical and tight (considering the spontaneity) but not constraining (plenty of room for solos). Everytime I put this in the disk player, it stays there for weeks. My favorite tune is the"Five Z's"-- a real toe tapper. Erskine's drumming is prominent throughout [driving, but not overbearing and tasteful] and Sheppard's open, full tone on the saxes is pleasing. I'd like to pigeon-hole it as simialr to some other group, but I can't. It is a guarenteed pleaser (trust me, I've got hundreds of jazz CDs is this is one of my top five or ten).

5 out of 5 stars .........LIFE IN HONG KONG 1996/1997.....................2007-07-18

I loved this DVD...thanks to Jeremy Irons, the gorgeous/beautiful Gong Li and Maggie Cheung...people have to be cognizant that living in Asia is alot different than in USA...I can't get enough of both Chinese actresses...their natural beauty, in different light, I may add....Gong Li is a perfect physical package who matriculates her art so very well and Maggie Cheung has big dark eyes to drown in with ectasy and another thing with reviwers doting on Gong Li and her limited English...I don't care about that at all...she talks with her eyes and facial expressions far better than any English prose...I love this Chinese thespian just the way she is...both these Chinese actresses 'speak volumes' in their depiction of what Asian women demand [respect]....I was saddened to see this intenational film come to and end...great shots of Hong Kong and all the enviromental trials and tribulations of a different culture, I dare say......SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF

1 out of 5 stars Possibly the most ridiculous film ever made!! A waste of Li and Irons.......2007-07-03

THIS WAS AWFUL!!Usually I can find something positive to say about a film, but not with CHINESE BOX!

If you choose to waste 99 minutes with a film that is absolutely ridiculous be my guest. How could someone such as Wayne Wang who directed THE JOY LUCK CLUB and actors Gong Li (RAISE THE RED LANTERN) and Jeremy Irons (just about everything for thirty years) have ever held their heads up after this bomb!!! It is obvious that Gong Li was chosen for her crossover fame and NOT her ability to speak English!!! She is given lines such as "What?", "Yes" and the most important "No". Irons is the same if not worse as in his sex-crazed lover role in LOLITA (which was tons better).

1997 Hong Kong is in the midst of British Colonial Rule ending. What will happen to it's culture,it's society etc. as the Chinese regain rule? If that is the story then something really got lost in translation in this internationally produced debacle. This screenplay is absolutely one of the worst that I have ever sat through. The acting is simply misdirected.CHINESE BOX is ludicrous. 0 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2007-02-11

Chinese Box is a mesmerizing assault on the senses: confounding, mystifying, bewildering and passionately driven from beginning to end. The acting is riveting and complex: Gong Li eloquently portrays a siren of a cipher and Jeremy Irons unrelentingly lives and breathes the role of her doomed lover. Wayne Wang's film draws you into a maze of emotions and actions that intertwine to defy all reason and yet make the most profound sense. IF you are serious about your film collection--Chinese Box is a must have.

2 out of 5 stars Wayne, please stick with melodrama and lay off the social commentary.......2006-07-18

I can completely understand those who feel this is a beautiful and touching film. The acting, pace, mood are good and even affecting.

It is the social commentary part that is laughably atrocious. It should be a crime for a film maker to make up historical events like Mr. Wong did in this film; I am referring to the two scenes of student suicide. For those of us who are well informed, the movie just lost all credibility; for those who aren't, it just added more to social and racial prejudice. It is beyond artistic license, it is political propaganda! Why oh why Wayne? To appease certain Westerners' stereotypical view of the Chinese? Simply unforgivable!! Wayne, for your and the world's sake, stick with melodramas please.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome except for the Maggie Cheung Story.......2006-07-03

The film is a masterpiece. But the Maggie Cheung story was sad and not vey interesting, that is my main objection to this excellent movie. And Ruben Blades is quite annoying.

But the Jeremy Irons and Gong Li love story is a masterpiece, it deserves a place among humanity great performances. The chinese man that is Gong Li's boy friend sees her as a prostitute, but the english man loves her with all his hearth. Extremely good acting, since it is extremely difficult to play convincingly a love story.

The music is absolutely awesome and is perfect for such a good love story. I am not a big fan of love stories, but this one is a true one and it is awesome.

The end is really sad. The film is really very very good. If you ask me who is the best actress in the world, I probably would say Gong Li. Sadly she is not so popular in the western world

5 out of 5 stars Zanabili Rips!.......2001-04-20

Whether you like jazz, rock and roll or are just a fan of great instrumental guitar music, Lava is for you. Z plays flawlessly, beautifully, with deep emotion, a unique style, and he just plain rips on this album. You won't get tired of listening to this; in that way it's like Satriani's "Surfing with the Alien" or Steve Howe's "Turbulence." You can play this one as background while you work or as foreground while you play. It's just great instrumental guitar music.

Michael is a very extraordinary artist, paying great music, and wonderfully engineered. I've turned people onto this disc who don't normally listen to soft jazz, and they love it. It doesn't get much better than this!!

5 out of 5 stars A good, kick back and listen.......1998-08-24

I picked up this one because of the cover, the guitar burning in lava, it fits the CD, this one smokes...It reminds me a little of Ottmar Leibert's early work, not so technosized (is that a word?), pure guitar. This is a put in and listen, read a good book, have it in the background. It's more mellow than, say, Oscar Lopez's Heat. This CD has a fequent listeners spot in my collection. I'm looking forward to Zanabili's next CD

    Product Description

Killer musicianship, tight grooves, story songs to tongue-in-cheek avant-funk oddities. Keven Brennan's music has been described as "a bubbling stew of psychedelic funk," with eclectic influences ranging from the funk of the Meters and Parliament/Funkadelic, to the offbeat humor of Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa, to the imagery and poeticism of Tom Waits and David Byrne. Blag Dahlia of The Dwarves described Keven as "a rhymer whose tunes run hot like Cajun gumbo, then cool like a drunk in a coffee house." Just as eclectic and encompassing are his talents as singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, including saxophones, clarinet, bass clarinet, guitars, keyboards, drums and percussion. Board the funky spaceship and ride past the shuffling shoes and slack-jawed gawkers... destination Keven Brennan.

5 out of 5 stars Duke, The real deal/a Great Album!!!.......2005-05-13

Great Album/ Songs...Wonderful!!!That's just an opener.Duke Levine is a rare artist-one that values solid songwriting, and playing which supports the song.Every tune on this CD feels right.Duke's playing is superb,tasteful-never overplaying ,or derivative-always soulful, gritty, melodic, and fresh-sounding!! I don't understand how Johnny A. garnered the press he did, while this CD flew beneath the radar;and, 'LAVA' was released earlier!!!Steve Vai should've been a bit more observant in his artist search...Duke is the real deal.

    5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY AWESOME.......2004-11-12

I love the guitar from heavy metal to jazz and almost anything in between. This is a cross of the HELLECASTERS and JOHNNY A and is absolutely beautifull. Sensational instrumental guitar musik with many flavours ranging from roackabilly / fusion / country / rock / blues and many more. Georgous tone, captivating melodies and first class virtuosity throughout make this a no brainer for anyone who loves the guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Great driving music and more.......2000-12-16

This is a wonderful set of tunes for my old California country heart to hear during my eastern city commute. There is a history lesson and vision here for those guitar folks that enjoy Duane Eddy getting buzzed and playing after hours with Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Chet Atkins, and some of Curtis Mayfield's band. If I was still serious about playing, I'd learn every move. He's no fast hand, but it's solid, well produced, mature playing with a strong sense of song and sound. When I play it loud, the traffic transforms into a bunch of other people just like me just trying to get to work and home. Terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Got me through an all night drive.......2000-07-24

I received this CD as a gift having no idea what was on it. I was exhausted, driving at night from LA to Monterey when I opened it. It kept me going with the beat, kept me intellegent with the clever phrasing, but yes, kept me at a safe speed with it's recognizable rhythms. I loved it, it got me there. Thank you Duke, for a great all nighter.

4 out of 5 stars Mary Chapin Carpenter guitarist plays with class!.......1998-10-12

After hearing this guy play with MCC, I was pleased to find out about this CD.

LAVA has everything an instrumental album needs to keep your interest, and it holds up after repeated listenings. He gets some great tones, plays without self indulgence, covers a wide range of styles and is a refreshing change from the pyrotechnics found in most guitar albums of late. If you dig country and blues with a healthy rock edge, check this out. (Fans of the Hellecasters will not be disappointed)

This CD will provide your daily does of twang every time.
