There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

May be High Point of English Song.......2007-06-04

Whenever I listen to any renditions of English art songs, going from Elizabethan times to the modern, as by Percy Grainger, I always dispair at how uninteresting they are when compared to the great German, French, and Italian art song repetoires. It seems as if the English can never quite wrest their genre from its folk roots and become a 'classic' music realization. I cringe at the Shakspearean 'hey nonny nonnies' and the 19th century compositions, none of which are as good even as Stephen Foster at his best.

But here is Purcell, and I believe I've found an author of English song I can really enjoy. To be sure, he has not entirely kicked the straw from all of the lyrics, but out of this 74 minutes of performance, I can easily listen to it many times over. And, as it stands at the moment, the prices for these CD's are a real bargain, if you like English song.

Great Nighttime Music.......2000-06-11

My first listen to a cut from this album was while riding my bike on a moonlit night. As soon as I got home I called the radio station to ask for the name of the song and the artist. That was 3 years ago and I have not tired of it yet.

No. 7 Dakota Rose is an all time great. It never fails to pick me up and provide additional energy.

Buy this album and you'll never regret it!

Album Description

On Free to Dream, Williamson's cool, smoky, and supple alto envelops each song in a sensuous embrace. There's a remarkable play of darkness and light and a wide range of inflections in her voice that bring out shades of meaning in the words. Her unerring feel for time is marked by a playfulness with the beat that let's her drag a word or phrase behind the beat one instant then spring ahead of it the next. Even when she's taking liberties with a song, she never loses track of the words or melody; she's seems to be guided by an innate feeling for the lyrical. .

Throughout the album, she is able to make personal statements that also address universal feelings. Her originals, such as "In the Loop" and "Free to Dream" are statements of self-hood, independence, and hopefulness. She conveys the sweet sadness of love with great compassion and understanding on Bonfa's "Gentle Rain" and Stevie Wonder's "Another Star." There's just a hint of laughter in "But not for Me" and tenderness in "With a Song in My Heart." But Williamson has plenty of emotional range and there's sass and self-assurance in the down and dirty blues, "You Don't Know What You're Missing" and the headlong euphoria of bebop in Bud Powell's "Celia." Her medley of songs from The Sound of Music, a loving daughter's playful and affectionate "thank-you" to her late father, is heartwarming and creatively insightful. This is not merely an album by a singer with a back up band, but a real jazz singer's album. Williamson scats with authority on "Alone Together" and her pure, melodious flute playing graces "Gentle Rain" and "Puttin' on the Ritz."

I order Mark Balwin album after hearing the samples....the album is just great..lovely arrangements and it won't bore you even after multiples times of listening to it...I highly recommend it....the Guitar's tone used on this cd is just that Fat piano like tone...

"Shades of Light" quickly moved to the top of my "most favorite CD" list -and my list includes a little bit of everything. This is a spiritually inspired, warm and gutsy expression of "art from the heart"! Baldwin once again delivers to the listener a contemplative and encouraging "road trip" for the mind. Baldwin's mastery with a guitar is matched only by his industry-proven expertise as an arranger and producer; you won't find a better recording of music! I so appreciate Baldwin's committment to expressing his own unique, unfiltered and unequaled "groove" in every project he's involved in, no matter where his name shows up in the credits. Light acoustic-style jazz with a kick has never sounded this good. The only problem I find with "Shades of Light" is that it leaves me hungry for "Shades of Light 2"!

This is a pleasant album with a nice variety of songs some of which I have not previously encountered. Drew Minter's voice is correct in every way; that is: nice tone quality, accurate pitch and excellent diction. BUT there is no excitement to be had; there is no emotion to latch onto. He sings "O Solitude" just the same as he sings "Crown the Altar" which contain totally different meanings. His best renditions are: "Lord, What is Man" and "Be Welcome then,Great Sir". The only thing I detect that conveys some sense of drama are changes in volume. These songs can be very meaningful when the performer takes note of the song's message.The accompanying instruments are excellent and the album is worth buying if you are "hooked on" Purcell.
