Album Description

Frames front man Hansard has teamed up with classically trained Czech vocalist and pianist, Irglova to produce this album of affecting songs and compositions. From straight songs to piano instrumentals, "The Swell Season" affords an insight into a whole other side of Glen/The Frames, as well as offering a perfect introduction to this very talented newcomer. The record takes its name from author Josef Skvorecky's book of the same name. Set in Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia, the story centers on one man's love of music and his pursuit of unattainable women as a country comes unglued. Like the book, the record deals with the pains and hopes of those struggling to make sense of their lives.

The album is rich in contrasts, moods and musical creativity. My only complaint is I couldn't get the security cover off fast enough. Whoever doesn't like this simply hasn't heard it. Listen.

Awesome.......2007-07-12

I discovered Glen Hansard when I saw the movie, "Once." The tunes on this CD are exceptional. Hansard's lyrics and emotional rendition are moving and, occasionally, haunting. Irglova's harmony adds a delicate counterpoint to several of the songs. I listened to this CD non-stop for the first couple of weeks I had it, and still find it one of my favorites.

Having seen the movie-"Once" I wanted to get this recording. This recording by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova is quite pleasing to the senses. It touches me deep inside. I play this over and over.

Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.

These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.

One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.

My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."

My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."

The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."

The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."

Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)

Head Music for Deadheads.......2007-04-02

If you just like the down-home, country-sounding aspect of the Grateful Dead's music, this probably isn't the album for you. But if you love the spacy, swirling, improvisational aspect (think "Dark Star" on Live Dead), this DEFINITELY is the album for you. Pick a quiet night, settle back in your favorite chair with your earphones and a nice buzz (from whatever), close your eyes, and feast your brain! RATING: 5 "DARK" STARS!

This is something else, but a good something..........2006-02-24

Let me start off by saying that Greyfolded is NOT what you might think it is...the ultimate Dark Star. It is far from it. That said, however, it is a work of intense complexity, dexterity, and an amazing knowledge of the material. It was put together in much the same way that Anthem was done; that is, from various live performances of the Dead, except that Greyfolded is done so to the nth degree. As others have noted here, it is performed with an "orchestra" of the various Grateful Dead bands across time, faded in and out to often devastating psychedelic effect. There is even a chart at the back of the booklet showing where all of the differing performances come in and out. Greyfolded is like an alloy of these performances, producing a final product with its own properties.

Since Grayfolded is its own work, it is not the happy Darkstar that I like to bliss out on for 20 minutes at a time. However, it is nearly 2 two hours of intense Darkstar-based music and sounds, all performed by the Dead according to the meticulous arranging and puzzle-fitting efforts of John Oswald. For someone out there looking for the ultimate Darkstar, go elsewhere. However, if you want a really interesting experimental GD extraganza, pick this up! Because this doesn't deliver the ecstatic punch that Darkstar delivers, I only give this record 4 stars out of 5. However, this IS still an amazing work.

four and a half, actually.......2003-03-17

I'd give this five stars, but I'd save that for a Dead show...like a Dick's Picks or full show. However, this album serves as a testament to Dark Star, which in my opinion is the greatest song of all time, at least I'd say it's my favorite song. The Dead being the greatest musical assemblage of musicians show how over 25 years they transformed this piece, and where they could go with it, and what it's potential was. It's a [good] tune, all around and is THE signature Grateful Dead song. What more can you say?

Time Travel.......2002-12-11

For Dark Star fans(and I understand there are a few of us)this is IT(so far).
Almost two hours of the Dead doing what they did best,improvising.This is John Oswalds "version" if you will of the ultimate Dark Star.He has taken over a hundred hours of tapes from the Dead Vaults ,all of performances of Dark Star and compiled ,segued and overdubbed a symphony of the Dead.The most amazing thing is that although this set covers a thirty year timespan it sounds so perfect and so cohesive that it defies logic.It is as if we owned a time machine instead of a compact disc player as we hear Jerry Garcia in 1971 duelling with Jerry Garcia in 1991.This is the most exciting music I have heard since I bought the King Crimson ProjeKCs box set.
You know you need this set!.

Fantasy Illusion Dream.......2002-03-27

A lot of people in other reviews say that this disc doesn't sound like the "real" dark star as played by the Grateful Dead back in the '70s. Well, it's not. This is a JOHN OSWALD album - NOT a Grateful Dead album. What Oswald did was use parts of the Dead playing "Dark Star" to create his own piece.
And what a piece he created. Nearly two hours of seamless music, and all of it sounding like the paintings of Jackson Pollock, or the ultimate pipe dream. My favorite moments are the end of disc 1 and the beginning of disc 2, especially the feedback solo on "The Phil Zone". And how about the transition from "73rd Star Bridge" into "Cease Tone Beam"? Great stuff.
In some pressings of disc 2, there are three minutes of extra music hidden before the Multiple Garcias shout "transitive nightfall of diamonds". To find them, start the disc and as soon as the CD starts playing, hold down the "Reverse search" button on your CD player. The thing that shows the time will start counting backwards until it shows -3:02. When it does, release your finger and listen.

Album Description

Noisy and experimental, Britain's Swell Maps experienced little commercial success during the course of their chaotic career, but in hindsight they stand as one of the pivotal acts of the new wave: not only was the group an acknowledged inspiration to the likes of Sonic Youth and Pavement, but their alumni - most notably brothers Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks - continued on as key players in the underground music community.

Although Sudden (vocals/guitar) and Soundtracks (piano/drums) formed the first incarnation of the Swell Maps as far back as 1972, the group did not begin to truly take shape until 1976, when the siblings enlisted bassist Jowe Head and guitarist Richard Earl. In the spirit of punk's "do-it-yourself" mentality, they formed their own label, Rather Records, and issued their debut single - the brief, jarring Read About Seymour - in the early weeks of 1978. Local media support soon won the group a distribution pact with - but they did not resurface until over a year later with the single Dresden Style.

In mid-1979, the Swell Maps released their full-length debut A Trip To Marineville, a crazy quilt of punk energy and Krautrock-influenced clatter. After the release of the speaker-shredding single "Let's Build A Car," the group recorded one final studio LP, Jane From Occupied Europe, before breaking up. Each of the members followed their own career paths, playing solo and forming bands: Sudden formed the Jacobites, Soundtracks joined Crime & The City Solution and Head played with the Television Personalities.

I've got a full moon in my tail light..........2007-06-06

So I'm listening to this and suddenly I feel like my day has a soundtrack and this song is the prelude to a chase scene. Oddly atonal stuff is perfect for minding my own, not paying too much attencion to the background until a great song full of energy pops on and its time to jump around for a bit. Am I doing a good job selling this cd to you? Don't care really. If yer into this kind of thing, yer gonna buy it so don't let me slow you up.

"Anything Can Happen In The Next Half Hour".......2007-02-22

More breathtaking than an episode of Stingray (hard to believe, I know) these manic puppet show fans serve up an incendiary disc that'll burn your ears and serve them to you for dinner.
I wasn't phased at all by the Nervous Nellie reviews that termed the record unfocused-at the time this album was recorded punk rock and atonal noise co-existed quite well together. Just look at the Contortions, Wire, 8 Eyed Spy, the record makes perfect sense to me.
You'll love "Midget Submarines", "Vertical Slum", "H.S. Art", what a great bunch of rackety noise. I thought it was my heard-earned money well spent. Swell Maps score extra points for the Jimmy from Supercar sound bite at the beginning of the disc. I can almost see Mitch shrieking appreciatively in the background. Doctor Beaker would approve.

Early Post Punk Classic.......2005-05-09

The debut album from Britain's Swell Maps was completely different from anything being recorded in the late 70's. Swell Maps had been around for quite some time before actually going into the studio to record their debut, but you can't really tell since the album is a chaotic mess from beginning to end (in a good way). But it does feature two distinct halves. The first side consists mostly of short punk songs that match up considerbly well with pretty much any of the other pre-eminate punk bands of the era. This is where you will find very catchy numbers like 'Another Song' and 'Midget Submarine'.

But the second side is where you get to the seminal and groundbreaking Swell Map style that influenced countless bands including Sonic Youth and DNA (not to mention the entire no-wave genre). The music on the second half can basically be described as sprawling, feedback-laden jams, especially the two 8 minute centerpieces 'Gunboats' and 'Adventuring Into Basketry', both of which reveal Swell Maps' obsession with Krautrockers Can. By the end of the album, it is difficult to beleive that these songs came from the same band that kicked out the 1 minute punk blast 'Vertical Slum' just 40 minutes earlier. Yet therein lies the greatness of not only this album, but of this band. They were simply not content with churning out the same old 3 minute punk song (which they do quite well). They continued to push the envelope as far as they could and ended up creating brand new avenues for not only themselves, but for others to explore.

As bonus tracks, Secretly Canadian has included the entire 4 track EP that accumpanied the original 'Marineville' LP. Swell Maps second (and final) album, 'Jane From Occupied Europe' is equally brilliant and no less essential, but I recommend beginning with 'A Trip to Marineville' for the originality and sheer influence it has left in its wake.

Definitive...Incredible.......2005-01-10

This recording is definitive of the whole punk/new wave sound. Its right up there with "Nevermind the Bullocks..." Incredible.

This is one of my favourites. It is all just perfect pop stuff. Best songs are "What I always wanted" and "When you come over" but all the songs are good.

The Sound of Bees.......2000-03-30

Like 10-ton truck, cutting through the muck- this cd plays the ambient theme tune from a dozen bees, humming away in your head...

There's highs, there's lows. Sometimes they play fast. Sometimes they play slow. And to pick out different songs is when you miss the point. In the middle of the night, there's still no light ...well? if you've never had the heart to slack. If you're too well adjusted to snort crack. If you like your beats to be boiled and baked, and your tunes to invade your head for a few weeks... you've obviously spent too many days without thinking.

This is minor in a major way.

Ever since my dad got too many days without thinking, I have been absessed with swell. They're awesome!!! I've got all the CD's now and am waiting for the realease of International rescue. Buy this CD, you'll enjoy it greatly!!

Great Band Alert!.......1998-09-25

Dying to hear a great band? Check out Swell, especially with this album, and the release prior to this, 41. While not as consistently great as 41, Too Many Days Without Thinking does feature a handful of songs which prove satisfying and at times deeply profound. Swell has an instantly recognizable sound in much the same way that Sonic Youth does, so that even when they vary song structures and musical styles, you instantly know you are listening to a Swell song (a pun laying in ambush, evidently). This is evident from the very first second of the propulsive "Throw Back the Wine" which leads to the achingly beautiful "What I Always Wanted," in my mind the first of three truly great songs on this album. The album peaks again with "At Lennie's" and finishes off with the breathtaking coda, "Everyday, Sunshine." Through a brief set of lyrics poetically describing the moment of impact in a car crash and it's immediate aftermath, the song manages to convey the frail grip we have on our own mortalily before allowing it to drift away. This is a band that deserves your attention.

An excellent album by an underpublicized band.......1998-09-15

Swell - who hails from San Francisco, capture some fantastic mood and sound structure to their low key approach. From surfy songs like "Sunshine Everyday", to the hop-skip-jump sound of "F**k Even Flow" (my favorite), to the Church-like sound of "What I Always Wanted", Swell incorporates a low key diversity of sound that is slinks into your mind and soon you are grooving along to their growl. An excellent album.
