The first CD in Chronological Classics' series on Art Tatum, this disc includes the earliest extant recordings of Tatum. Tatum arrived in New York as an accompanist to Adelaide Hall, a pedestrian singer now largely forgotten, but the event is chronicled here in their four recordings together. There are already flashes of brilliance apparent in some of the piano parts. Tatum recorded his first four studio solos for Columbia in 1933, and each is a staggering example of his technique and his powers of invention, with Tatum focusing his energies on some of the most common jazz tunes of the day. "Tiger Rag," heard as well in an early broadcast transcription, is a marvel, turning the Original Dixieland Jazz Band's novelty tune into a pyrotechnic explosion. Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" seems to particularly inspire Tatum's harmonic explosion. The final 16 tracks come from Tatum's 1934 Decca recordings. The full range of ballads, pop, and jazz tunes provides a rich portrait of a pianistic marvel at the dawn of his fame. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars A great set of depression era "white" hokum, and old timey.........2003-11-30

...blues... This is a great cd from the depression era, the Allen Brothers(there are only 2), are a great duo, both on vocals, one on guitar and banjo and the other on Kazoo(& occasional mandolin, guitar or harmonica). These recordings are a rare examample of white people performing blues and hokum music succesfully, in the early years of the depression. This is good time music at it's best, and it's a lot of fun. The best selection here is "Salty Dog", however all the tracks have that good time blues sound and all the tracks are upbeat and fun. A great cd!

    Album Description

Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra had a reputation as a "sweet" band, but they were not totally dismissed by jazz critics. Downbeat magazine named them as the best swing band in the country in 1937, and the "sweetest" band of 1938. They also placed high in Metronome magazine's annual polls, and appeared in films like "Time Out For Rhythm" and "Gals, Inc." This collection contains twenty-four recordings that the band made for the Brunswick label between the years 1932 and 1934, a time period where the band was also playing on "The Camel Caravan" radio program -- a show that increased their notoriety immensely.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very influential, but not the mothers of rock'n'roll.......2003-02-04

The Boswell sisters, although largely unknown these days, were an enormous influence on many singers of the forties and fifties, including other sister groups like the Andrews sisters and solo singers like Ella Fitzgerald. Their sound was jazz based, like much music of the era. They were capable of many different types of song - they could swing but they could also sing romantic love songs.

On this, the fourth of an excellent five-CD series of their music, there is a song called Rock and roll, which was a #7 hit for them in 1934. While it is an excellent upbeat song that swings at a good pace, it is some way removed from the music of the fifties that we now know as rock'n'roll. Nevertheless, there are those who acclaim the Boswells as the mothers of rock'n'roll on the strength of their music in general and this song in particular. Much as I love their music, I think not.

For reasons that are not obvious to me, some tracks appear on more than one volume in the series. For example, four of the tracks here (Coffee in the morning, If I had a million dollars, The object of my affection and Dinah) also appear on Volume 5, which I've already reviewed. From the information supplied, I do not think they are different recordings. Still, there are so many songs on each volume that the duplication does not matter, except if they are played back-to-back.

Apart from songs already mentioned, there is one other hit here - You oughta be in pictures, which peaked at #17 in 1934. The remaining songs are all wonderful, including covers of two Duke Ellington songs, Sophisticated lady and Mood indigo.

While this is an excellent collection, it is not the most important volume in the series. I collected volumes 1, 3 and 5 in this series first, because nearly all the important songs are in those CD's. I enjoyed them so much that I bought volumes 2 and 4 not long afterwards. They are less important, but equally brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Tatum on the Chronological Classics: The Best!.......2002-09-02

I am pleased to report that I have all six discs of Tatum available on the Chronological Classics (1932-1949); they are all absolutely superb: I wish everyone could have them. What the French have done on the CC series is maverlous: they've mastered the art of trans-recording from the old 78s to CD techne; this involves not only the elimination of surface noise, but the clarification of instrumental timbre and the correct pitch of revolutions per minute. The tracks are timed perfectly--not too fast as other producers pander. This first disc offers 20 of Tatum's exquisite early solos. I recommend this and the other five Tatum discs on the CC label.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Tatum recordings available..........2000-10-17

These are mostly Art Tatum's earliest piano solos, as well as his 1st studio sessions. Tatum never sounded better then on Tiger Rag(where he sounds like 3 pianists), also he accompanies torch singer Adelaide Hall on four selections. This music is essential, Tatum was one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and his music sounds as fresh and as lively now, as it ever did. The music on this CD belongs in all jazz collections. ESSENTIAL
