Full of surprises!.......2007-02-03
According to the article in the magazine "former child prodigy" Eigsti doesn't like a fuss being made about his age. He especially wants this album "to be seen as a musical statement and not in terms of 'good for [his] age'". At 21, he says he'd rather not see the word "youth" mentioned in any reviews of his work at all. Lucky for me then that he probably won't be reading this one but I was truly staggered (surprise #3) to learn he was so young. But then I considered the fact that Herbie Hancock was only 22 when he released "Takin' Off" and that I had never once made an issue of that fact; it was, and always ever has been, all about the music. So I see his point and will thus never mention his age again, not even among my friends.
Previous reviewers have said all that needs to be said, really. The man and this CD are simply awesome. I was shocked though, (surprise #4) to learn that "I've Seen It All", probably my favourite song on the whole album, is not just a cover but a Bjork song. An e-correspondent of mine has been urging me for some time now to get into Bjork but I've always resisted. I think I might check her out now though if she writes songs this good.
Other covers like "Giant Steps", "Love For Sale" and "Woke Up This Morning" (or the "Sopranos" song) are all handled well and Eigsti is surrounded by top-notch talent like Christian McBride (bass), James Genus (bass) Lewis Nash (drums) and Julian Lage (guitar). Even so, this album really is all about him and his piano playing. His own compositions, "Get Your Hopes Up", "Argument", "True Colors" (written with Julian Lage) and "Adventure One" are all just as brilliant. It's the ballads that I usually love the most and rarely like fast-paced playing but I was surprised (surprise #5!) to realise that even on the fast-moving cuts on this CD, (like "Freedom Jazz Dance" for instance), I was thoroughly enjoying myself.
Surprises all round then, and a thoroughly enjoyable CD. The album is produced, recorded and mixed by Al Schmitt. I remember him doing excellent work recording and mixing alongside producer Tommy LiPuma on albums by people like George Benson, Joe Sample, Natalie Cole and even Diana Krall. He's done a great job here; the music is crystal clear.

Violinist Regina Carter recorded I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey following her mother's death. A tribute to her mom, it features period songs she was fond of. But far from wallowing in sentimentality, it's a spirited work of reflection featuring vocals by the irrepressible Dee Dee Bridgwater on two songs, including a freewheeling "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen," and the charismatic Carla Cook on three tunes, including a darkly glowing "St. Louis Blues." Teaming to warmly atmospheric effect part of the time with clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera and accordionist Gil Goldstein, Carter readily avoids easy nostalgia, whether basking in the childlike delights of "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," "Little Brown Jug" and "Anitra's Dance" (the Peer Gynt classic, taken from the great '30s bandleader John Kirby's arrangement), or the more sophisticated of emotion of Duke Ellington's "Blue Rose" and "I'll Be Seeing You." Produced by John Clayton, the album doesn't rise to the heights of Freefall, Carter's 2001 duo recording with pianist Kenny Barron, but its easygoing qualities win out over the slick high conceptualism of some of her other efforts. --Lloyd SachsCustomer Reviews:
What you get is what you see.......2007-06-13
Regina Carter has a beautiful tone, but I feel she is not really a swinger (I guess more modern forms of jazz are more her domain). The accordeonist Goldstein also weighs things down a bit, but this still doesn't mean you shouldn't buy this CD, particularly if you're not a die-hard fan of really swinging violinists (ellegant Stephane Grappelli, rugged Ray Nance, joyous Svend Assmusen and others).
And, to ensure at least 4 stars for this album, there is the versatile Cuban Paquito D'Rivera, who at times really shows adequate swinging passion on his clarinet and finally, but by no means unsignificantly, there are two tracks with Dee Dee Bridgewater who can really cook a swinging storm with her voice and push the other musicians to their limits and beyond ...
All in all, not a bad CD, falling somewhere between nostalgia and swing.

Let It Be Jazz is jazz vocalist Connie Evingson's most enjoyable work to date. It certainly helps that the source material is the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, but her willingness to venture beyond the usual "red album"/"blue album" fare gives some welcome exposure to such gems as "The Night Before" and "For No One" (both gorgeously accompanied by piano). Evingson seems utterly at home, gently swinging "From Me to You" and laying down a funky groove in "Fixing a Hole." Also fun is the playful instrumentation, which includes a sitar for "Blackbird" and a bandoneon for a delicious "When I'm 64" that seems to anticipate a joyous old age filled with tango and romance. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:
Sweet little endorphin rush.......2007-06-03
It's a bloody shame, it is.............2005-08-28
and then came the first take on "64" --- and I abandoned hope. She lays a Latin beat on this delightfull whimsical number, and her rendition becomes a technical exercise, reflecting no comprehension of a song that is accustomed to generating wry smiles as we contemplate the coming challenges of age and aging marriages. "Blackbird" is interesting, but Ms. Evingson mostly fails to display a meaningful feel for the material.
Great music and, oh yeah, it's Beatles tunes.......2003-11-30
A mixed bag.......2003-11-17
The album begins very well, Dean Magraw's riffing on an electric sitar blends wonderfully into an "All Blues" riff...all of this leading into a very fun, naughty take on Blackbird. The album also ends well with a secret track of When I'm 64 in which Evingson lets loose with the band in a borderline polka take (go Minnesota roots!).
However, then there's the middle stuff. To be sure, Evingson has a nice, sultry voice and she has great musicians working with her, but in general the album feels bored and uninspired. It's difficult to really meld the Beatles' music into something new, unique and great (the songs were great to begin with), but at the same time, it doesn't hurt to try something new if you're going to jazz it up.
And therein lies the problem I feel. Excepting Blackbird and the secret track, I get the impression that they felt that simply swinging the songs would be sufficient. And occasionally that's fine and sounds good. But the fact remains, that "fine and sounds good" does not make a brilliant, lasting album.
If you love Evingson, then buy it. If you love hearing the Beatles in any shape or form, but it. However, if you want a unique take on the Beatles, then I suggest buying Jason Faulkner's "Bedtime with the Beatles" album instead.

Released shortly after his death in 1993, The Yellow Shark represents one of the only accurate performances of Frank Zappa's "serious" orchestral music--at least as far as the composer was concerned. Assembled from a series of sold-out performances in Germany by the Ensemble Moderne, the set includes re-workings of old favorites like "The Dog Breath Variations" and "Uncle Meat," live arrangements of some of his hairiest computer music like "The Girl in the Magnesium Dress" and "G-Spot Tornado" and new works by Zappa composed specifically for the event. The performances are astonishing and the music? Pure Zappa. --Andrew BoscardinAlbum Description
The 26-member Ensemble Modern performs FZ's 'most-humanly-impossible-to-play' compositions. Piano duets, string quintets & small ballets. Simply exquisite, with a 60-page booklet to explain it all. Originally released in 1993, it stayed on the classical chart for most of `94. Includes the tracks 'Outrage At Valdez,' 'None Of The Above,' & 'Welcome To The United States', plus arrangements of some of the most fiendishly difficult pieces from FZ's back catalogue & even a 'greatest hit' or two (some would pick this as the definitive version of 'Dog Breath Variations'). Sadly, this was the last album released by FZ during his lifetime. The didipak and the booklet are housed in a slipcase. Rykodisc.Customer Reviews:

It requires also great concentation and a capability that probably I don't have to well understand this kind of experimental classic music.
It goes beyond the experimental rock that is typical of many of his works, leading him to the level of great contemporary experimental classic composers.
Given such a level of difficulty I don't know how much I can suggest to buy it. You just should try to hear at this music and decide if it does fit with your soul (how could I believe just a few years ago that today I would like so much 'Your funeral my trial' of Nick Cave?)

A Frank Zappa Treasure. Better than many of his CDs.......2005-07-29
This recording is probably one of the very last to be done by Zappa himself, before his unexpected death due to illness. Of all the musical figures of the 1960s lost to us over the years, I miss Zappa almost as much as I miss John Lennon, and I am very happy that if we had to lose them, it was not to drugs or any other kind of self abuse.
There are fourteen musical pieces and three `spoken word' pieces on the recording. I confess that the spoken word pieces may actually be a bit dated, especially the `Welcome to the United States' track on a questionnaire for immigrants which makes a reference to terrorism which may seem entirely too glib in our current environment.
Two of the earliest tracks `Dog Breath Variations' and `Uncle Meat' are instantly recognizable from their music and titles as `quotes' from earlier albums, with very little `classical' varnish over their strongly jazzy sound. Most of the other musical pieces have more subtle quotes from earlier Zappa works, and demonstrate influences from George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, the movie music from `Spartacus', and his old mentor, Edgar Varese.
I noticed that the applause on these tracks was louder than the music and I was wondering whether the audience was appreciating the music itself or the presence of that formidable 1960's icon, Frank Zappa. I'm sure it was a little bit of both, but Zappa and audience couldn't resist quoting from one of his best albums, `The Mothers Fillmore East - June 1971'.
I think this quote was entirely appropriate, in that we owe so much musical innovation to the popular musical performers who were nutured by 1960's, producing such wonders as Zappa and the great bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Who, who are still scoring our artistic perceptions on both commercials and dramatic themes on TV.
This may not be Zappa's greatest album, but it is one of his cleanest. Like `Hot Rats', there is very little `throw away' material. And, it is one of the very few pop or classical recordings by a major musical figure where you will hear the performance of a didgeridoo (Australian aborigonal flute).
Highly recommended for Zappa fans and fans of 1960s music in general.

If you don't know Bill Nelson, this is the ideal introduction........2007-03-06
Ironic, that I would tune in to the band, just as they released their swan-song, "Drastic Plastic". But that album made me hungry for all things Nelson. In the following years, he released a huge number of solo offerings. Each exploring a wide variety of musical styles.
In 1986, "On A Blue Wing" was released in the US. I didn't know it at the time, but "considerations of religious sensitivity" necessitated (at least in the record company's opinion) the changing of the original album title: "Getting The Holy Ghost Across". Oh, those tender American sensitivities...
The album is a creative high-point for Mr. Nelson. Elements of the Far East & the Indian Subcontinent are in evidence here, astounding guitar performances, deep musical arrangements, and some really hot hooks. From the opening cut to the final track, all are keepers.
Bill went through & reworked the track listing to better follow the original UK release. He has also added some extra cuts, which came from the same period. Most of those had been released on singles.
Explore the world of Bill Nelson. "Getting The Holy Ghost Across" is sure to make you a fan.

Modern Music on My Radio.......2007-05-14
This was the 4th album by BeBop Deluxe, a progressive rock outfit that was more popular in Europe than the US. The album came on the heels of Sunburst Finish, which found Bill Nelson, the mind behind the group, hitting his stride as a songwriter.
Bill Nelson has several recurring themes in his career that he has often utilized, and they are all evident here -- his fascination with American culture, science fiction, classic British romanticism (Shelly, Byron et al).
Side two of this album is a sort-of chronicle of Bebop Deluxe's tour of the US -- the loneliness of touring on the road in an unfamiliar land, the disillusion with America, the optimism of science fiction. For these reasons, it is likely as perfect a single side as any band has recorded, for it channels directly the psyche of the artist, it's all there if you listen.

Another Masterpiece.......2007-03-14
A Desert Island Album.......2006-10-09
In hindsight, I realize that the concept album format here pretty much killed the album's chances, as the songs nearly all run together, and thus are difficult to isolate for radio airplay. This of course makes for a great whole-album listening experience as intended. But now with downloads and the ability to easily play albums out of sequence, concept albums like MODERN MUSIC become fragmented and incomplete, since the cadence of one song often serves as the opening phrase of the next. I imagine someone shuffling this album in their MP3 player could be in for a confusing, disconnected experience.
I'm afraid many of those classic 70's rock records (such as the Queen albums, QUEEN II and SHEER HEART ATTACK) will suffer the same fate. We don't sit down and listen to whole albums any longer; music is in the background of our lives now, carved up in nice 3 minute slices and served buffet style. I suppose it's the same effect as those classical compilation CDs (and vinyl records before them) which issue only excerpts of themes of the great composers' works, instead of movements or whole pieces, which listeners of the classics have had to suffer with long before the iPod generation.
So I'm doubtful that this Be-Bop Deluxe masterpiece will ever again be put in a context where it may be fully appreciated. This particular release even compounds the problem by including "bonus tracks", which had nothing to do with the original album. They might be nice for anyone who doesn't have them already (they're all from the last original Be-Bop Deluxe release, THE BEST OF AND THE REST OF, and so aren't special or unique tracks themselves); in truth they only remove us from the original musical atmosphere MODERN MUSIC creates. But since this is the only current release of the album available, I still must recommend it for those who haven't heard MODERN MUSIC before.
As for my "desert island" title: if you're picking one rock CD to bring somewhere that allows you to listen to music without interruption, MODERN MUSIC should certainly be a contender. Some believe it's a great collection of pop songs; others say it's a guitar master's album; still others believe it's progressive in its scope and more connected to the genre you'd find King Crimson or Yes. I think its brilliance is in crossing through all these genres and creating a whole greater than the interpretation of its parts. It is still modern music to me, some 30 years after its original release. When heard in its entirety, it is a marvel of musical ingenuity from a talented band which deserved much more success than they ultimately achieved.
Thirty years on, still great.......2005-08-23
What we have here is intelligent songwriting, great melodies, fine singing and exceptional guitar work. One of the great tragedies is that Be Bop Deluxe never got the recognition it so richly deserved.
By the way, the rest of Bill Nelson's catalog consists of work that's really worth listening to. The "After the Satellite Sings" CD from the mid 1990s is just as good as Modern Music, albeit in a more modern vein. In particular, Nelson's voice isn't as strong, yet he is still a fine singer and songwriter. His guitar work, however, has gotten even better. I'm in awe of this man's talent.
This is the Best Be-Bop Deluxe Album Period........2004-05-12
The band is incredibly tight, the recording is excellent, the songs are great. The group is filled with competent musicians, and the song writing is excellent. This is the Be-Bop album to own.
