5 out of 5 stars Full of surprises!.......2007-02-03

I learned about Eigsti late last year from the November 2006 issue of "Jazziz" magazine. Not only was he on the cover but the sampler CD that came with the magazine also featured his song "Get Your Hopes Up" with its brilliant interplay between Eigsti and Julian Lage. I only had to hear the first few bars to know that this was a dude whose music I had to know more about. I was surprised (surprise #1) to learn that he already had several CDs under his belt before this one. I was also surprised (surprise #2) to learn that this particular CD had been out almost a year!

According to the article in the magazine "former child prodigy" Eigsti doesn't like a fuss being made about his age. He especially wants this album "to be seen as a musical statement and not in terms of 'good for [his] age'". At 21, he says he'd rather not see the word "youth" mentioned in any reviews of his work at all. Lucky for me then that he probably won't be reading this one but I was truly staggered (surprise #3) to learn he was so young. But then I considered the fact that Herbie Hancock was only 22 when he released "Takin' Off" and that I had never once made an issue of that fact; it was, and always ever has been, all about the music. So I see his point and will thus never mention his age again, not even among my friends.

Previous reviewers have said all that needs to be said, really. The man and this CD are simply awesome. I was shocked though, (surprise #4) to learn that "I've Seen It All", probably my favourite song on the whole album, is not just a cover but a Bjork song. An e-correspondent of mine has been urging me for some time now to get into Bjork but I've always resisted. I think I might check her out now though if she writes songs this good.

Other covers like "Giant Steps", "Love For Sale" and "Woke Up This Morning" (or the "Sopranos" song) are all handled well and Eigsti is surrounded by top-notch talent like Christian McBride (bass), James Genus (bass) Lewis Nash (drums) and Julian Lage (guitar). Even so, this album really is all about him and his piano playing. His own compositions, "Get Your Hopes Up", "Argument", "True Colors" (written with Julian Lage) and "Adventure One" are all just as brilliant. It's the ballads that I usually love the most and rarely like fast-paced playing but I was surprised (surprise #5!) to realise that even on the fast-moving cuts on this CD, (like "Freedom Jazz Dance" for instance), I was thoroughly enjoying myself.

Surprises all round then, and a thoroughly enjoyable CD. The album is produced, recorded and mixed by Al Schmitt. I remember him doing excellent work recording and mixing alongside producer Tommy LiPuma on albums by people like George Benson, Joe Sample, Natalie Cole and even Diana Krall. He's done a great job here; the music is crystal clear.

5 out of 5 stars Taylor Eigsti's "Lucky to be Me" is wonderful!!1.......2006-08-25

What a find for me when I ordered this album. I had not heard of Taylor Eigsti before, but knew I would like his music by the samples I was able to hear first. His ability to play the piano far surpasses anything I had hoped for. He is amazing. But it is more than just his incredible talent. He has an astonishing way of communicating a language of music, a voice from many brilliant artists from the past, yet a very distinct style of his own that is captivating and exciting. I love his work. And the other players on this album compliment it so well, as they are wonderful artists too. It is a superb album, and I look forward to getting more of his work.

4 out of 5 stars Where Does He Go From Here?.......2006-07-18

Listening to this brilliant 20 year old, I kept asking myself what this guy needs to grow into as a pianist. Much of what I thought might be missing I suddenly heard. So the question is, where does he go from here? What a delicious thought to contemplate.

3 out of 5 stars Nice CD, but............2006-06-01

Seems to be now emulating Joe Sample somewhat in his style on this CD. I had watched him develop a unique style over the past decade during his schooling at the Stanford Jazz workshops and also here in the San Jose area. He seems to be wandering from his early years IMHO. Great talent though and one of the better pianists.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Pianist.......2006-04-14

I got this CD with the other two new Concord releases (Christian Scott and Erin Boheme). Its amazing how Taylor seems to be an accomplished veteran musician yet is only in his 20's I believe! The CD is great, its soulful and imaginative, while the piano skills are nicely crafted, for all jazz and piano fans this is a great CD to listen to, Taylor has a big future.

Violinist Regina Carter recorded I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey following her mother's death. A tribute to her mom, it features period songs she was fond of. But far from wallowing in sentimentality, it's a spirited work of reflection featuring vocals by the irrepressible Dee Dee Bridgwater on two songs, including a freewheeling "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen," and the charismatic Carla Cook on three tunes, including a darkly glowing "St. Louis Blues." Teaming to warmly atmospheric effect part of the time with clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera and accordionist Gil Goldstein, Carter readily avoids easy nostalgia, whether basking in the childlike delights of "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," "Little Brown Jug" and "Anitra's Dance" (the Peer Gynt classic, taken from the great '30s bandleader John Kirby's arrangement), or the more sophisticated of emotion of Duke Ellington's "Blue Rose" and "I'll Be Seeing You." Produced by John Clayton, the album doesn't rise to the heights of Freefall, Carter's 2001 duo recording with pianist Kenny Barron, but its easygoing qualities win out over the slick high conceptualism of some of her other efforts. --Lloyd Sachs

4 out of 5 stars What you get is what you see.......2007-06-13

As the title of the album and the somewhat, well, kitschy cover indicate, this CD is indeed a sort of sentimental journey through the musical past... From my point of view, it is only a pitty the affair is not a little less sentimental and a little more swinging.

Regina Carter has a beautiful tone, but I feel she is not really a swinger (I guess more modern forms of jazz are more her domain). The accordeonist Goldstein also weighs things down a bit, but this still doesn't mean you shouldn't buy this CD, particularly if you're not a die-hard fan of really swinging violinists (ellegant Stephane Grappelli, rugged Ray Nance, joyous Svend Assmusen and others).

And, to ensure at least 4 stars for this album, there is the versatile Cuban Paquito D'Rivera, who at times really shows adequate swinging passion on his clarinet and finally, but by no means unsignificantly, there are two tracks with Dee Dee Bridgewater who can really cook a swinging storm with her voice and push the other musicians to their limits and beyond ...

All in all, not a bad CD, falling somewhere between nostalgia and swing.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible! Incredible! Incredible!.......2007-03-09

Regina Carter is perhaps the most amazing jazz violinist of this period.I have all of her recordings and this is one of my favorites. I just can't get tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Journey.......2006-08-19

My husband and I love it. Ms. Carter plays with such emotion. She is truly an artist who can interpret a piece of music and make it her own. We are so glad that she went back into the studio to record after the recent death of her Mom.
This recording rates right up there with Rhythms of the Heart and Paganini: After a Dream.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar.......2006-07-25

Regina Carter's violin appears in places with Mary J. Blige (My Life cd) and and Wynton Marsalis (Blood on the Fields), so you could say her versatility is unquestionable. I love to notice where artists like her show up discretely in liner notes in a variety of places and listen to their chameleon-like virtuosity evolve through their own choices. She has recorded some fabulous music with her violin but here she seems to find her own sincere voice and her own spiritual sentimentality without geting too wax nostaligic (for example on "A-Tisket A-Tasket"). My favorite track is "How Ruth Felt" because it's both awkward and grounded at the same time and seems to capture some of the relationship she must have had with her late mother to whom she dedicated the cd.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2007-03-14

This is a quality album and along with Modern Music probably in my top fifty favourite albums of all time (i've been around a few years and got quite a large collection!). I saw them live in 1977 and have treasured all their work ever since. I find their work hard to categorize and it still stands up with the best of today. Songs are intricate yet melodic with lyrics both bizarre and astonishing. "Crying to the Sky" has a beautiful guitar solo and "Ships in the Night" I just can't get out of my head. Many commend Bill Nelson as a creative genius. How he fronts this band singing vocals and playing the guitar so amazingly well is hard to comprehend. The "Drastic Plastic" album marked the beginning of the end for me. Bill Nelson was a great rock guitar player, pity he split Be-Bop up after Plastic to explore his musicality. I don't care too much for any of his later solo work.

4 out of 5 stars Sunburst Finish.......2007-01-05

This disc is probably the best overall from Be-Bop Deluxe. The music arrangements are very good. More bass would make the songs fuller, but a good disc.

5 out of 5 stars Une Saison en Enfer?.......2006-09-07

Be Bop Deluxe was a band that deserved better than they got, when they were around. Sunburst Finish is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of their creative efforts. From the opening sledgehammer blows of "Fair Exchange" right through to the last ringing notes of "Blazing Apostles", Bill Nelson, Charles Tumahai, Simon Fox and Andrew Clarke take the listener on a sonic tour of the landscape of the human soul. From the sad lament, "Crying to the Sky", to the Rimbaud-esque lyrics and searing guitar work of "Sleep that Burns", this is an album that's truly timeless, and well worth the listen. The addition of tracks like "Blue as a Jewel" and "Speed of the Wind" make this disc a jewel in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars Be Bop Deluxe- Impressive!.......2005-08-22

Now, when you're a teenager, like I am (15 years old), you are expected to like the music in your generation. FRANKLY, to me, my generation of music completely sucks. No one gives a damn about the music or lyrics anymore!! I love RUSH (all of their music speaks to me, from their beginnings to their new stuff), and I was looking for a band that was full of musicianship and that just plain ROCKED, like them. Boy did I get it with Be Bop Deluxe! These guys were wonderful musicians. My Uncle and my Father introduced me to them in 2003, and ever since I've been listening to all of their songs. LOVE Beauty Secrets!!! Anyone looking for a good band with great musicians, check these guys out. It is a shame they split, but their music lives on...

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: NOT A REMASTER.......2005-02-24

Five stars for the album, which is superb. But if you're in the US and you have this already, and were hoping to upgrade, forget it. Despte the fact that Astral Werks has been trumpeting these Be Bop Deluxe rerleases on its site-- with expanded booklets! Whoopee!-- these are, in fact, straight reissues of the old 1990 CD editions. Expanded booklets my ass: these booklets have been scanned from the old ones. And the mixes are identical to the 1990 editions. These so-called new editions are roughly as far, chronologically, from the original CD editions as those editions were from the LP releases. But no improvements have been made in this case. Another sterling instance of a record company simply not giving a damn. You should wait for the upcoming boxset, which Mr. Nelson is preparing even as we speak.

Let It Be Jazz is jazz vocalist Connie Evingson's most enjoyable work to date. It certainly helps that the source material is the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, but her willingness to venture beyond the usual "red album"/"blue album" fare gives some welcome exposure to such gems as "The Night Before" and "For No One" (both gorgeously accompanied by piano). Evingson seems utterly at home, gently swinging "From Me to You" and laying down a funky groove in "Fixing a Hole." Also fun is the playful instrumentation, which includes a sitar for "Blackbird" and a bandoneon for a delicious "When I'm 64" that seems to anticipate a joyous old age filled with tango and romance. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sweet little endorphin rush.......2007-06-03

Ms. Evingson did a fantastic job interpreting Lennon/McCartney material. She took the tunes and turned them into songs wherein we can re-savor the vibe of this great body of work. Does she pay homage to the spirit of Lennon/McCartney? No doubt. But she is not slavish to it, either. She stands on the shoulders of Lennon/McCarntney, and with incredible vision takes the work to a new, unexpected and sweet level. My only complaint? That she hasn't re-interpreted more of the Beatle library!

2 out of 5 stars It's a bloody shame, it is.............2005-08-28

.......that a quality voice and good arrangements can inflict such damage on Beatles' material. The problem is that the treatments don't match up with the songs to which they have been applied. When Ray Charles sang Hank Williams, it became Ray's song for those moments, and that is what has to be done when a musician takes on material so indelibly marked by master crafts people. Evingson doesn't do that and frequently she misses to the extent that it sounds like a send-up of the original. With each track,I kept telling myself that my attitude would improve with subsequent listenings ---
and then came the first take on "64" --- and I abandoned hope. She lays a Latin beat on this delightfull whimsical number, and her rendition becomes a technical exercise, reflecting no comprehension of a song that is accustomed to generating wry smiles as we contemplate the coming challenges of age and aging marriages. "Blackbird" is interesting, but Ms. Evingson mostly fails to display a meaningful feel for the material.

5 out of 5 stars Great music and, oh yeah, it's Beatles tunes.......2003-11-30

There are a number of reasons to buy Let It Be Jazz: Connie Evingson Sings The Beatles and the least of them is that the cd is covers of Beatles songs. In fact, you can forget that these are Beatles tunes and just remember that they are good songs performed well and with originality. Mary Louise Knutson, a fine pianist (just listen to the terrific piano-vocal duet of The Night Before,) has collaborated with Evingson on most of the arrangements which contribute greatly to the success of the cd. Connie sings them all well and sounds like she is having a great time. Her voice is terrific and her phrasing suits each song well. The melding of jazz with pop is done without diminishing either. And if you have a fondness for Beatles tunes, then it's icing on the cake.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2003-11-17

In listening to this album, I hear lots of great potential and occasional moments of great music...but at the same time, there's a fair amount that just fails to click.

The album begins very well, Dean Magraw's riffing on an electric sitar blends wonderfully into an "All Blues" riff...all of this leading into a very fun, naughty take on Blackbird. The album also ends well with a secret track of When I'm 64 in which Evingson lets loose with the band in a borderline polka take (go Minnesota roots!).

However, then there's the middle stuff. To be sure, Evingson has a nice, sultry voice and she has great musicians working with her, but in general the album feels bored and uninspired. It's difficult to really meld the Beatles' music into something new, unique and great (the songs were great to begin with), but at the same time, it doesn't hurt to try something new if you're going to jazz it up.

And therein lies the problem I feel. Excepting Blackbird and the secret track, I get the impression that they felt that simply swinging the songs would be sufficient. And occasionally that's fine and sounds good. But the fact remains, that "fine and sounds good" does not make a brilliant, lasting album.

If you love Evingson, then buy it. If you love hearing the Beatles in any shape or form, but it. However, if you want a unique take on the Beatles, then I suggest buying Jason Faulkner's "Bedtime with the Beatles" album instead.

Released shortly after his death in 1993, The Yellow Shark represents one of the only accurate performances of Frank Zappa's "serious" orchestral music--at least as far as the composer was concerned. Assembled from a series of sold-out performances in Germany by the Ensemble Moderne, the set includes re-workings of old favorites like "The Dog Breath Variations" and "Uncle Meat," live arrangements of some of his hairiest computer music like "The Girl in the Magnesium Dress" and "G-Spot Tornado" and new works by Zappa composed specifically for the event. The performances are astonishing and the music? Pure Zappa. --Andrew Boscardin

Album Description

The 26-member Ensemble Modern performs FZ's 'most-humanly-impossible-to-play' compositions. Piano duets, string quintets & small ballets. Simply exquisite, with a 60-page booklet to explain it all. Originally released in 1993, it stayed on the classical chart for most of `94. Includes the tracks 'Outrage At Valdez,' 'None Of The Above,' & 'Welcome To The United States', plus arrangements of some of the most fiendishly difficult pieces from FZ's back catalogue & even a 'greatest hit' or two (some would pick this as the definitive version of 'Dog Breath Variations'). Sadly, this was the last album released by FZ during his lifetime. The didipak and the booklet are housed in a slipcase. Rykodisc.

4 out of 5 stars Dedicated to experts?.......2007-06-25

Frank Zappa was very proud of this great and difficult work done at the end of his (too short) life.
It requires also great concentation and a capability that probably I don't have to well understand this kind of experimental classic music.
It goes beyond the experimental rock that is typical of many of his works, leading him to the level of great contemporary experimental classic composers.
Given such a level of difficulty I don't know how much I can suggest to buy it. You just should try to hear at this music and decide if it does fit with your soul (how could I believe just a few years ago that today I would like so much 'Your funeral my trial' of Nick Cave?)

2 out of 5 stars Zappa Attempts Stockhausen.......2007-02-13

FZ goes to Germany to upstage Karlheinz and tries an avant garde stage performance which is an elegant and popular form of expression in Germany. The Germans have perfected this type of marriage between romanticism and neoclassicism. In this case it's an overly technical performance, a display. The orchestra all sound good yet Zappa has given the music to another conductor, Peter Rundel. There is no rhythm section and without a background the result is too intellectual.

5 out of 5 stars The Yello Shark, performed by the Modern Music Ensemble.......2007-01-19

This CD addresses the more serious, compositional aspect of Frank Zappa's career, and it could not be addressed in a more suitable manner. It includes some of FZ's more difficult works, such as "Bee Bop Tango", "Uncle Meat", and "G-Spot Tornado". The conductor is Peter Rundel, and as Zappa says himself, he is a fine conductor. This is highly recommended for anyone who has already developed a taste for Zappa's complex and imaginative arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars ZAP!.......2006-01-20

Trying to define this album to my good friend was hard. "Well it's Zappa's songs done with an orechestra, but's not really classical sounding . . . it's just Zappa." And my friend just simply nodded and said "Sounds awesome." and i realized that if any reviewer would've just said 'It's Zappa!' it wouldn't take much more to sway me. so - It's Zappa! And it's damn near perfect it's so good! Riveting!!!

Be warned! You may like nobody (musically or real life) or anything (musically or real life) ever again after listening to this album, but it's not that big of a deal!

5 out of 5 stars A Frank Zappa Treasure. Better than many of his CDs.......2005-07-29

`The Yellow Shark', with words and music by Frank Zappa is a collection of `chamber music' pieces recorded in 1993 in Germany, performed by a German orchestra, `Ensemble Modern', which, I believe, commissioned Herr Zappa to assemble these pieces for their concerts. In the accompanying booklet, Frank is pictured with a baton in hand, but the credits only have him conducting three pieces, those with a very significant spoken word aspect (all spoken in English). He also makes a brief appearance at the beginning of the CD where he introduces the Ensemble Modern conductor, Peter Rundel.

This recording is probably one of the very last to be done by Zappa himself, before his unexpected death due to illness. Of all the musical figures of the 1960s lost to us over the years, I miss Zappa almost as much as I miss John Lennon, and I am very happy that if we had to lose them, it was not to drugs or any other kind of self abuse.

There are fourteen musical pieces and three `spoken word' pieces on the recording. I confess that the spoken word pieces may actually be a bit dated, especially the `Welcome to the United States' track on a questionnaire for immigrants which makes a reference to terrorism which may seem entirely too glib in our current environment.

Two of the earliest tracks `Dog Breath Variations' and `Uncle Meat' are instantly recognizable from their music and titles as `quotes' from earlier albums, with very little `classical' varnish over their strongly jazzy sound. Most of the other musical pieces have more subtle quotes from earlier Zappa works, and demonstrate influences from George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, the movie music from `Spartacus', and his old mentor, Edgar Varese.

I noticed that the applause on these tracks was louder than the music and I was wondering whether the audience was appreciating the music itself or the presence of that formidable 1960's icon, Frank Zappa. I'm sure it was a little bit of both, but Zappa and audience couldn't resist quoting from one of his best albums, `The Mothers Fillmore East - June 1971'.

I think this quote was entirely appropriate, in that we owe so much musical innovation to the popular musical performers who were nutured by 1960's, producing such wonders as Zappa and the great bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Who, who are still scoring our artistic perceptions on both commercials and dramatic themes on TV.

This may not be Zappa's greatest album, but it is one of his cleanest. Like `Hot Rats', there is very little `throw away' material. And, it is one of the very few pop or classical recordings by a major musical figure where you will hear the performance of a didgeridoo (Australian aborigonal flute).

Highly recommended for Zappa fans and fans of 1960s music in general.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't know Bill Nelson, this is the ideal introduction........2007-03-06

I've followed Bill Nelson's career since the demise of Be Bop Deluxe in 1978.

Ironic, that I would tune in to the band, just as they released their swan-song, "Drastic Plastic". But that album made me hungry for all things Nelson. In the following years, he released a huge number of solo offerings. Each exploring a wide variety of musical styles.

In 1986, "On A Blue Wing" was released in the US. I didn't know it at the time, but "considerations of religious sensitivity" necessitated (at least in the record company's opinion) the changing of the original album title: "Getting The Holy Ghost Across". Oh, those tender American sensitivities...

The album is a creative high-point for Mr. Nelson. Elements of the Far East & the Indian Subcontinent are in evidence here, astounding guitar performances, deep musical arrangements, and some really hot hooks. From the opening cut to the final track, all are keepers.

Bill went through & reworked the track listing to better follow the original UK release. He has also added some extra cuts, which came from the same period. Most of those had been released on singles.

Explore the world of Bill Nelson. "Getting The Holy Ghost Across" is sure to make you a fan.

4 out of 5 stars Great intro to Bill Nelson's solo work.......2007-02-17

I came to Bill Nelson by way of his collaboration on David Sylvian's Gone to Earth album. He is a GREAT musician. But after getting further into his music, I later realized that he also produced Gary Newman's album Warriors, which I had heard before David Sylvian. Bill Nelson has collaborated with many artist, but the work here is more defining of his own sound. give it a listen...

4 out of 5 stars Finally, after more than 20 years!!.......2006-12-17

This reissue is a minor miracle! The original was the only official release of then-new material Bill made for the Portrait/CBS label--but it never survived long enough to make it to CD. I got my first CD player in 1986, and this would have been one of my first CDs--If it had only existed! This first-time-on CD edition presents Bill's album and EP/Single as CBS Records originally released them in the UK in 1986. The original US edition was somewhat different, but ALL the music is here. People who have the US LP will be able to tell where the differences are, and where the unreleased material is. I'm glad to know that I don't have to keep my old vinyl copy in a vault anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Unique, even for the Seventies.......2007-05-12

Very interesting and original. "Jets at Dawn' and the title track are my favorite songs from this album.

1 out of 5 stars Ugh..........2006-08-02

Damn! About little less than a month ago I gave this one 4 STARS. It deserves nowhere near that many. I've since listened to more of the BBD catalogue and can safely say that this is easily the worst album these guys ever released. The only real standout is 'Adventures' and even that one can be bland. 'Rocket Cathedrals' and the title track are two of the STUPIDEST songs I've ever heard! Pathetic attempts at 'rocking out' by then-amateurs. There's nothing original or unique on this album; Nelson (thankfully) saved that for the later albums. Save your money on this and buy Sunburst Finish, Futurama, and Live in the Air Age instead.

4 out of 5 stars WARNING: NOT A REMASTER.......2005-02-24

Four stars for the album, which is superb. But if you're in the US and you have this already, and were hoping to upgrade, forget it. Despte the fact that Astral Werks has been trumpeting these Be Bop Deluxe rereleases on its site-- with expanded booklets!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing album !!!! Great songs Very Melodic Glam.......2004-11-02

I listen to this album daily. Bill Nelson's melodic solos song writing and singing are inspiring.I believe this album is by far the best of be bop deluxe. Its the most rockin one. It doesent have the boring electronic experimentation of the other albums. Futurama is good too but this album is the BEST. If you never heard be bop deluxe before i would descibe them as a mix between beatles and ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars. Great glam rock.

5 out of 5 stars The first experience.......2003-10-15

This was my first exposure to BB deluxe, I saw them play most of this album live, I say to Alan Milne, I can remember as a young guy listening to "Adventures in a Yorkshire landscape" for the very first time live and wondering what hit me, Bill standing out on the edge of the stage and breezing through it! you could here a pin drop in the audience. A classic Album and yes, very guitar orientated, Then slipping into "Night creatures" from hard rock! Great! no one can or could do that since. As for the Bowie comparisons? well if they were ever to meet, then Bowie would be sweeping Bill Nelsons Dressing room floor! Nelsons guitar playing? Class! Al dimeola collides with Jimmy page? I dunno! Bill had the works in his repertoire, lovely touches and textures. glaring riffs and licks, superb!

5 out of 5 stars Modern Music on My Radio.......2007-05-14

This was the 4th album by BeBop Deluxe, a progressive rock outfit that was more popular in Europe than the US. The album came on the heels of Sunburst Finish, which found Bill Nelson, the mind behind the group, hitting his stride as a songwriter.

Bill Nelson has several recurring themes in his career that he has often utilized, and they are all evident here -- his fascination with American culture, science fiction, classic British romanticism (Shelly, Byron et al).

Side two of this album is a sort-of chronicle of Bebop Deluxe's tour of the US -- the loneliness of touring on the road in an unfamiliar land, the disillusion with America, the optimism of science fiction. For these reasons, it is likely as perfect a single side as any band has recorded, for it channels directly the psyche of the artist, it's all there if you listen.

5 out of 5 stars Another Masterpiece.......2007-03-14

I can't decide which is better, this or Sunbirst Finish. Both albums are fabulous. This one has a concept style (side two on vinyl) where the songs run into each other. Play this first and get carried away in the dreamy lyrics and mesmerizing guitars from "Modern Music" to the haunting "Down on Terminal Street". Many metaphors describe this underated band best summed up by a British reviewer who said "it's rock music that paints pictures". I remember seeing them live with a big screen behind playing various sci-fi and other film clips during the set. The music brings memories rushing back.

5 out of 5 stars A Desert Island Album.......2006-10-09

In the past, I've been somewhat perplexed on why critics favored earlier Be-Bop Deluxe albums, such as the previous SUNBURST FINISH, to this one. It is still my favorite of the band's studio releases. I was also alarmed that a band that came so close to breaking big, never did even after the release of MODERN MUSIC. (The irony of Bill Nelson singing "Modern Music on my radio" in the title song has never been lost on me.)

In hindsight, I realize that the concept album format here pretty much killed the album's chances, as the songs nearly all run together, and thus are difficult to isolate for radio airplay. This of course makes for a great whole-album listening experience as intended. But now with downloads and the ability to easily play albums out of sequence, concept albums like MODERN MUSIC become fragmented and incomplete, since the cadence of one song often serves as the opening phrase of the next. I imagine someone shuffling this album in their MP3 player could be in for a confusing, disconnected experience.

I'm afraid many of those classic 70's rock records (such as the Queen albums, QUEEN II and SHEER HEART ATTACK) will suffer the same fate. We don't sit down and listen to whole albums any longer; music is in the background of our lives now, carved up in nice 3 minute slices and served buffet style. I suppose it's the same effect as those classical compilation CDs (and vinyl records before them) which issue only excerpts of themes of the great composers' works, instead of movements or whole pieces, which listeners of the classics have had to suffer with long before the iPod generation.

So I'm doubtful that this Be-Bop Deluxe masterpiece will ever again be put in a context where it may be fully appreciated. This particular release even compounds the problem by including "bonus tracks", which had nothing to do with the original album. They might be nice for anyone who doesn't have them already (they're all from the last original Be-Bop Deluxe release, THE BEST OF AND THE REST OF, and so aren't special or unique tracks themselves); in truth they only remove us from the original musical atmosphere MODERN MUSIC creates. But since this is the only current release of the album available, I still must recommend it for those who haven't heard MODERN MUSIC before.

As for my "desert island" title: if you're picking one rock CD to bring somewhere that allows you to listen to music without interruption, MODERN MUSIC should certainly be a contender. Some believe it's a great collection of pop songs; others say it's a guitar master's album; still others believe it's progressive in its scope and more connected to the genre you'd find King Crimson or Yes. I think its brilliance is in crossing through all these genres and creating a whole greater than the interpretation of its parts. It is still modern music to me, some 30 years after its original release. When heard in its entirety, it is a marvel of musical ingenuity from a talented band which deserved much more success than they ultimately achieved.

5 out of 5 stars Thirty years on, still great.......2005-08-23

Is it Be-Bop Deluxe's best record? Perhaps. I still can't decide if Sunburst Finish is their best. In the end, does it matter? Both are first-rate records.

What we have here is intelligent songwriting, great melodies, fine singing and exceptional guitar work. One of the great tragedies is that Be Bop Deluxe never got the recognition it so richly deserved.

By the way, the rest of Bill Nelson's catalog consists of work that's really worth listening to. The "After the Satellite Sings" CD from the mid 1990s is just as good as Modern Music, albeit in a more modern vein. In particular, Nelson's voice isn't as strong, yet he is still a fine singer and songwriter. His guitar work, however, has gotten even better. I'm in awe of this man's talent.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Best Be-Bop Deluxe Album Period........2004-05-12

If you are going to buy only one Be-Bop Deluxe Album, this should be it. It has all the energy you would want out of a 1970s rock band, and all the soulfull quality you could expect out of any song in any era. Bill Nelson was at his peak in writing on this album. I don't feel he has done any better since judging by the massive output he has put out over the past 25 years since this album.

The band is incredibly tight, the recording is excellent, the songs are great. The group is filled with competent musicians, and the song writing is excellent. This is the Be-Bop album to own.

5 out of 5 stars The Best !!.......2007-04-07

I have most of the Be Bop Deluxe material. Personaly speaking my favorite is the "Live" CD, but Im a musician and can appreciate the flawless performance that is the "Live" CD. Futurama is another excellent CD full of Very Good Songs. I dont buy a CD unless I know that Im going to enjoy most/all of the songs.(that means I buy my good stuff well after the release of the CD). All of the songs recorded by BeBop is recommended listening for the "Rock" fan. Bill Nelson is the "Best" guitarist Ive ever heard, and while singing lead vocals to boot !!! I have to admit that you probably really like BeBop, or dont care for them. For those that like, this CD is a must. For those that haven't heard, I recommend the "Live" CD. (Live in the Air Age).

5 out of 5 stars Simply their BEST.......2006-06-26

Having been a BeBOP fan since "Axe Fictim" ,I would agree "Futurama" is the band's most accomplished work.Great guitar songs abound, the stunning "Sister Seagull", the mellow acoustic "Jean Cocteau", the rocking "Maid in Heaven" ,"Swan Song"-awesome. I never tire hearing the stirring fade-out of Soundtrack. This album got knocked for being "over-produced" and Roy Thomas Baker can get outa hand(see Queen), but this record is a full realization of Bill Nelson's vision and remarkable song writing and guitar playing talents-A lost rock Masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars This guitar does not lie..........2005-04-26

After 'Axe Victim', Bill Nelson returns with a new band and new ideas based on dreams about his wife Jan. The result is probably the best Be Bop Deluxe release of their career. The songs are classic: Sister Seagull, Maid in heaven, Stage Whispers, Between the Worlds and Speed of the wind. These tracks have real staying power when other tracks from later releases were quickly forgotten. There are three bonus tracks with a total of 12 tracks. 'Futurama' is the best disc in the Be Bop Deluxe catalog. The booklet contains all the song lyrics as well as photos in this anniversary edition. EMI continues their high quality remastering with this title. Sound quality is superb. A must have for the serious fan. 12 tracks/45.49.

5 out of 5 stars Futurama . . . FINALLY !!!.......2005-04-20

Can't believe I'm actually listening to this. Again. Haven't heard this collection of songs since I was a teenager in the mid '70's (a great time to be a teenager, too ;-)

Enough nostalgia. Futurama is one of the most beautiful and poetic records *ever* made by anyone. Words cannot due it justice. It also rocks from beginning to end (not to mention the 3 bonus tracks which are a real treat).

Thank you, Bill Nelson, for making this music.
