The Jazz Composer's Orchestra was a brave and visionary 1968 venture in which Carla Bley and Michael Mantler applied the resources of a big band to the intensity and freedom of the avant-garde. Here Mantler creates settings for a series of leading soloists, touching on many of the different directions the music was then taking. A piece featuring guitarist Larry Coryell is one of the first vehicles in free jazz featuring amplifier feedback as a key component, while a short piece for Pharoah Sanders has the tenor saxophonist producing a continuous series of instrumental screams against orchestral punctuation. Features for trumpeter Don Cherry and trombonist Roswell Rudd are relatively conservative in terms of sound, but a breakthrough in musical construction. The CD peaks with the overwhelming Communications No. 11, a 33-minute, multilayered invention in which the orchestra matches its powers with the explosive creativity of Cecil Taylor. --Stuart Broomer

4 out of 5 stars Cool.......2007-01-06

I like St. Germain. When I first listened to this album, I thought it wasn't as good as Tourist. The sound is different in both albums, and I think this one may feel as good as the former one depending on your mood...

3 out of 5 stars This is NOT Tourist 2!.......2002-04-22

If you're like me and thinking about buying this album looking for more of what you liked from Tourist, don't -- you will likely be disappointed (like I was). Definitely not as funky nor as memorable. Fine for having on in the background, but I doubt it's worth the asking price just for that. Giving it a 3 mostly because I still have warm feelings about St. Germain based on Tourist -- if you don't have that, get it!

5 out of 5 stars very cool disc.......2002-02-07

Its got a mellow feel, but can definetily work a party early on in the evening. Its got a jazzy feel to it, but is very modern with the electronica element too.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2001-12-01

I bought "Tourist" some months ago, and really liked it. I think that "Boulevard" beats it x2.

It's one of those albums that you put on, close your eyes and just drift away into. If that makes any sense.

And if you listen to the album, I think that it will.

4 out of 5 stars Laid-Back Auditory Landscape.......2001-08-04

I've been looking for hip background music for work. This creates an incredible vibe that doesn't become TOO much. Mellow beats, Cool jazz samples, modern and mature. Every client that has listened to this has commented on the unique mood this can create.

Album Description

Southern Rap Sensations KHIA is the original Thug Misses aka The Queen Of The South and when she steps to the mic, thugs and thug misses stop, look, and listen. This lyrical goddess is releasing her new album, GANGSTRESS.

Famous for her Gold Record, "My Neck, My Back," from the album THUG MISSES, KHIA has been touring relentlessly for the past four years. "Being out on-the-road touring, doing a lot of shows, going overseas, it all motivated me to make this album. The response has been great. I'm a realist, but I love what I do."

That raw, brutally honest realness is evident in KHIA's first single from GANGSTRESS "Snatch The Cat Back," an ode to KHIA's own brand of modern female empowerment. KHIA's songs have an irresistible tunefulness and catchiness to them and the production on GANGSTRESS is impeccably clean, allowing KHIA's smooth, signature vocals to rise above the dirty south beats and synthesizers. With explicit lyrics as provocative as they are self-aware, GANGSTRESS extracts the roughness of the streets and matches it to the smoothness of KHIA's creamy voice. What's most surprising about GANGSTRESS is not the overt sexuality of the songs' lyrics, but the sheer willfulness of their creator and the reflective, pensive nature of her rhymes.

To date, KHIA has sold over 800,000 records, but she never forgets the reason she's on top. "My fans recognize my realness, and I'm always touring, no matter where. I love to interact with my fans, because at the end of the day, it's all about them!"

Y'all gonna respect me...' I found it funny how so many people are expecting some great hip hop album from Khia and reading most reviews, she just get's bashed over and over. Come on people! There is a reason that acts like Khia exist...for our pure entertainment. She is beyond trashy and that is exactly why I love her! Not since Choice has there been a female rapper who's so explicit in her sexual desires and all done over witty and raunchy lyrics. Songs like "B*tch MF Got Damn", "F**king Me Tonight", "Snatch The Cat Back", etc. are examples of Khia's trashiness! I love the interlude entitled "Questions For The Ni**az"...hilarious!!! So when listening to Khia just remember it's all about the fun.

1 out of 5 stars A mind is a terrible thing to waste-this CD is proof!.......2006-10-24

Once again, the "queen" (?) of illiterate ghetto garbage gangster (c)rap is at it again (with apologies to my friends and family still in the hood)! Somebody needs to chain the record studio doors and add armed guards to keep this poor child from wasting good Cd space again!

I was at my nephew's apartment last weekend and he was wasting electricity by playing this junk. I asked "Who the heck is that?" "Queen of the South" he replied. "If that's so, I'm moving out west!" was my rejoiner.

Once again, as in "Thug Misses," sister girl is having a field day displaying her ignorance on wax. The reasons she gives to "Respect Me" aren't any reason for anyone to do as the title suggests. The "song" B--MFGD" is little more than the chanting of these curse words that seem to represent about 90% of her VERY limited vocabulary.

In "Ah-Ha" she has the audacity to thank God for her success while spouting some most typically unGodly language toward her distractors, or "them @@##$$! @#$ haters" as she puts it. F--- Me Tonight is WAY more sleazy than sexy and "Questions for the N(egroes)" could have easily been recorded off of a streetcorner conversation between drunken bimbos. Khia, there are these places called schools and libraries-go to them!

Yeah, I know, some of the fellas are making worse records than this (Believe it or not!) and I have equally condemned them in other posts. So there's no double standard here. Trash is trash in my book.

In short, this is Khia's second sickening collection of poorly written sexual boasts and hatred for her distrators. Take this CD out for target practice! Use it as a frisbee! Just don't pollute your CD player with it or use hard earned money to support the continuation of recorded ignorance. To break the language down for those illiterate enough to like this mess-DON'T BUY THIS JUNK!

1 out of 5 stars Snatch Your Money Back.......2006-08-29

I'll admit it, I was a fan of Khia's only hit "My Neck, My Back (Lick It)". It's a fun song.. sure it's hard to ignore redundant, Lil' Kim wannabe swagger of the song, but it was catchy. The album it was from, "Thug Misses", however, wasn't a good album by any stretch of the imagination. Despite having amazing song titles like "F*** Dem F*** N*****" and "F*** Dem Other H***" it prove to be a plodding and uninteresting listen. Khia simply doesn't have the personality, or flow or lyrics to support an entire album's worth of material. Her delivery is an interesting as someone listing pizza toppings to you over the phone and her beats sound cheap and hollow. In fact, the interludes were more captivating than any of the songs on the album.

"Gangstress", Khia's second album suffers from all the same problems as her first album, but for some odd reason the result is ten times worse than before. The interludes are not funny and there are 11 of them. That's right... 11 interludes/skits, and not one is funny or interesting. Not to mention that sound quality of most these is so bad that you can barely make out what's being said.

From the 12 remaining songs, there are some listenable tracks ("I've Been High", "Ah Ha" and "Snatch The Cat Back") but the rest of the songs are interchangeable, deep bass, minimalist beats that go on for upwards of 5 minutes. "Respect Me", a song that clocks over 5 minutes of Khia misspelling Respect ("You have to R E S P C respect me") and giving eye-rolling reasons as to why she deserves respect. Sure, she does her beats and lyrics herself, but they are awful... so who cares? "Thug Misses" and "Gangstress" are NOTHING to brag about, and neither is being a One Hit Wonder. First time I heard "Respect Me", I seriously said aloud to myself: "Does this song... end??" The chorus must be repeated somewhere close to 50 times.

Once you've heard "Respect Me" you can turn off your stereo, because this is what the entire album sounds like. Khia produced "Gangstress" herself and you can tell.

The concert footage on the bonus DVD packaged with "Gangtress" basically sums Khia up. Boring (she stands in one spot and raps), bizarre (does every one of her shirts have to be sheer??) and cheap (the audio is distorted and the camera work is shaky, at best).

Skip "Gangstress", unlike "Thug Misses", it doesn't even have a guilty pleasure hit on it. "Snatch The Cat Back" is the closest thing, but is far from the smile-and-sing-along quality that "My Neck, My Back" had.

1 out of 5 stars (1 out of 10) Khia Must Have Slept With Some Powerful Record Execs........2006-08-21

Okay, just about everyone said the correct things about this album. Listening to this album, it is very trashy (and not just the content either). The same person who brought us the one hit wonder single "My Neck, My Back" off the horrible Thug Misses album back in summer of '02 brings us this right here. It's music right here that has rap (and sometimes hip hop) given a bad name, because if it's explicitness. Khia just adds to the cesspool of what is going on in rap (especially with the female rappers bad reputation).

Not only the explicit content that goes on in this album. Everything else is horrible. Production is unbarrable. And Khia shows no improvement since her last album (take it from someone who has listened to that...as well as this). Infact it's possible that she's gotten worse in the past 4 years. Don't even put this in your CD player, because it will be pain on the lenses. You may want to use this as a frisbee or something to break buds on if you smoke, or a drink coaster, because it doesn't deserve to be heard.

There is nothing good about this album at all. And it's true, there are people (such as those who gave this 5 stars) will think this is the best they've ever heard. Apparently she's fooled over 800,000 people (the amount of records shes sold according to the product description). I SERIOUSLY question your taste for music if you give this 2 stars. My cousin is a fan of that type of music, and I saw this at his house and just happened to check it out one day, and was supprised that I made it through this.

Now I don't like leaving 1 star reviews with out giving advice to the artest. If Khia wishes to remain in the game, she is going to need to do a 360 change with her style, becuase what shes got going on right now is highly unacceptable.

I bought this for my elderly father who is finding his home way too quiet after the death of my sweet mother. He is a retired Presbyterian minister and loves hymns. He is thrilled with it and listens to it every day. The quality is excellent. The music is beautiful. He likes that it is instrumental because he can listen to it and still be able to concentrate when he's on the computer.

        Product Description

The Carps are from Scarborough, a pretend hood in Toronto. They are a duo that plays music for human ears. Having two people in a band can be a liberating thing, as it has been seen. Such a shame they are so young - had they come around any earlier they could've taken credit for more than a few novel ideas. With the EP the Young & Passionate Days of Carpedia, the two ragamuffin soul rockers deliver the promise to set themselves far apart from elephants, swirly red and white candy, beards, brothers and sisters, and Phil Collins. The Carps stand alone. They sound like nothing you could imagine, and everything you'd like to. The Carps thrive on ingenuity and vicissitude. Newness always! Therefore the captain of the ship, Neil White, wielding his disheveled bass and a wonky synthesizer, steers this raw emotion into a palatable and progressive direction. All this while never leaving his "mindless self-indulgent" duct tape Punk Rock days far behind him. Perhaps the jungles of Sri Lanka still run through his veins, though he could never lose the class and distinction that only he, as a real British bloke, could carry. Jahmal Tonge is the soul junkie. Growing up on asexual legends like Michael Jackson and Prince, it was sifting through his father's record collection that exposed to him to Motown, Stax, Soul music! These are the sounds that are at the heart of The Carps. From behind his drum kit, or with his guitar strapped and his MPC drum machine at his side, Jahmal soulfully screams his soulful, soul-catching, soul-baring soul in a raw way... It's the only way he knows. It was Bold, Black, Christian women that led him that direction. Discernibly, the sight and sounds of the Caribbean still stick. Hearing the tropical wind blow through an open church tent as a woman cries out to God, tearing her vocal cords from the deepest part of her being, will change a temerarious young boy.

Grand Analog is unbalanced and dirty; never clean. Grand Analog is fuzzy with three coats of dust and reads like an old manual no longer in use. The music is a beautiful mess of rap'n'roll dub and soul; a hip hop slop shop of times good and bad. Calligraffiti: for the tired heavy heart, ridden with struggle and happiness. Only a year old, Grand Analog have already impressed crowds at the Western Canadian Music Festival in Winnipeg, JunoFest and SXSW in Austin, Texas. The live show lends a hypnotic blend of poetics and experimentation of hip hop sound that is enjoyable and refreshing to any ear. The Grand Analog Project is fronted by Odario G. Williams. Members include Darcy Ataman, Damon Mitchell, Ofield K. Williams, Alister Johnson and Arun Chaturvedi. The first single, I'll Walk Alone, is a fresh hip hop sound that blends dub and soul without missing a beat. The b-side single Get Live and Go has a sly blend of old school hip hop with rock'n'roll; this track deals with the underworld of immigration within the western world. Other singles include Around This Town and Touch Your Toes.

A giant of a collaboration between R & B Titans. Ben E. King on lead vocal adds texture to the great AWB sound. A must for fans of both artists
