4 out of 5 stars Classic Hard Bop Live.......2006-09-24

The band on "Doin the Thing" is one of Horace Silver's best. At that time the music he was playing was closer to hard bop though there are some elements of soul that he would become more influenced by. As a live set, it is excellent, great sound quality especially with the remaster. The extra tracks are classic as well. The in between stage banter is dated but amusing and nostalgic and fits with the disc. Any fan of hard bop or soul jazz will want to pick this one up. Hard bop took away the somewhat sterile sound of bebop and made jazz populist again without selling. Anything from Horace Silver from the 60's is great. This is an especially good album though.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Look no further. Simply put this is THE funk Bible.

5 out of 5 stars A monster album.......2002-11-24

Anyone who likes the funk will dig this album. I don't think I've ever heard Maceo play any better. The first track 'Maceo' is so deadly; there's no way to sit still when you listen to it. This is one of those albums that you listen to from start to finish. Easily Maceo's finest album.

5 out of 5 stars maceo wont you to blow in the ghetto bother.......2001-10-26

long lost, this was made when maceo, and other members of james brown band got sick of the godfather's crap and walked out, maceo proved he could hold his own, then james brown playa hating had this record removed from the shelves back in the day, but still this is the bomb, if you love maceo get this.

4 out of 5 stars Do it forever.......2002-10-24

Al Jackson. Al Jackson. Anyone who wants to be a drummer should know him and listen to this album to hear his amazing snare sound. While this album is one of the better ones in their catalog, it's also somewhat of a mixed bag. Ten of the eleven songs were knocked out in one day. That's almost unheard of these days with today's production standards, artists' egos, and simply, time and money. This shows what a well-oiled machine Booker T. & the MGs were and how creative and explosive the four of them had become. "The Beat Goes On" was recorded over three months before, and should I just say that ten songs would have been a nice even number. "I Can Dig It" is an uninteresting MGs original, and the title track sounds like it was done three years and three albums before this one. These three songs sound mediocre compared to what they were capable of, but as always, the superior musicianship, on "I Can Dig It" particularly, make them all worth listening to. This album features four top-notch covers that were included on the Time Is Tight box set. "Never My Love" and "Ode To Billie Joe", along with the wonderful "Expressway To Your Heart", featuring Jackson's unbelievable snare, and the tight as can be "You Don't Love Me". The surprises here are "The Exodus Song", which has a kind of "Hang 'Em High" like atmosphere, and also great, great versions of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and a slowed down offering of one of my favorite Ray Charles songs, "Let's Go Get Stoned". The former features, again, terrific work by Jackson, and a Duck Dunn / Steve Cropper bass line that's incredibly infectious, and the latter featuring a vintage Cropper guitar solo that shows why people always remark on him being such an economical player. Everyone in this band had the key to soul - less is more. When the album is over, the listener will feel as if he or she has been surrounded by greatness. This is an overlooked gem in the spectacular catalog of Booker T. & the MGs.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful ensemble playing.......2000-09-19

Just about everything Booker T. and the M.G.'s recorded is worth hearing, but this is an often overlooked masterpiece. The "Ode to Billie Joe" starts off as a dirge/march and then swings uptempo. "You Don't Love Me", recorded by the same rhythm section with Albert King, has a neat arrangement, as does "Let's go Get Stoned". "Blue on Green" is straight ahead organ-combo blues done the way it should be--no one player is trying to do all the work. None of these tunes appears on The Best Of...on Atlantic.

3 out of 5 stars A good "transition" album.......2000-04-06

This album came out between the two best MG's albums: "Hip Hug-Her" and "Soul Limbo." Stylistically, it falls between those albums. The edgier blues/funk style of "Hip Hug-Her" and the earlier albums is becoming more refined and jazzy in the style of "Soul Limbo" and the albums that followed. The best MG's albums mixed original and cover tunes in almost equal quantities. "Doin' Our Thing" is almost all covers and some of the choices ("The Beat Goes On," "Ode To Billie Joe") are definitely below par. Not a bad album, but pick up "Soul Limbo" and "Hip Hug-Her" before you pick this one up.

      5 out of 5 stars Tight........2005-08-20

after temporarily leaving james brown's band in the early 70s, maceo parker put this group together with his brother, drummer melvin parker, and a mess of james brown's ex-players. the kings men were comprised of two trumpeters - joe davis and kush griffith, another tenor sax - eldee williams, two guitar players - chank nolen and country kellum, a bassist - bernard odum, and melvin on the kit. the music they created was insanely soulful and not all that unlike maceo's work as part of the jbs. it has lots of wah-wah guitar, tight drumming, funky bass and, of course, excellent horn playing. not surprisingly, maceo gets 99% of the solo time, but you'll still be drawn to the rest of the band - they're on the ball for every track. doing their own thing is a mostly instrumental release, but a few of the cuts have some chanting ("maceo"), storytelling ("funky women") and straight-up singing, like on "got to getcha", the james brown-like "shake it baby" and the soulful ballad "don't waste this world away".

5 out of 5 stars The man is funky..........2000-10-25

If you love James Brown's singles but are annoyed that they trail off just when Maceo is starting to work his sax solo, get this album. If you like Soul Pride (the collection of James Brown instrumentals) and/or The JB's Anthology, get this album. If you like Maceo's solo albums (especially Life On Planet Groove, which contains two songs from this album), you won't be disappointed here. It is a great, mostly instrumental album. As Maceo says, it's 2% Jazz, 98% FUNKY STUFF...But beware, it may take a while to actually get the album in the mail--but it is worth the wait.

      5 out of 5 stars A GREAT SECRET.......1999-09-10

It is UNBELIEVABLE that this album has languished in obscurity for so long! It is UTTERLY FANTASTIC and will appeal to music fans of any genre ranging from funk to jazz to pop. Maceo and "All the Kings Men" revolted and ditched James Brown to "Do Their Own Thing" and what they did was great! Apparently JB suppressed the album, and the rumour goes that he payed DJs not to play it. Makes sense, because I don't know how else it couldn't have made a huge, influential splash in the music scene.

Maceo leads the band with James Brown precision, but the tunes feel better crafted and less redundant (don't get me wrong; I love JB) because the pieces get to JAM.

Buy this album and be the first to turn your friends on to it. Everybody will love it, guaranteed. It is FUNKY, FUNKY, COOL and FUNKY. GROOVY too.

4 out of 5 stars Good to hear the old Horace Silver!.......2000-10-04

It's nice when a reissue comes out that shows you something you didn't know existed...the title tune "Doin' the Thing", swings hard...Filthy McNasty is marred slightly by a couple notes missed by Horace Silver, and an early drum break by Roy Brooks...nice tune, though...Blue Mitchell plays trumpet and he sounds GREAT...Junior Cook is on tenor sax...Roy Brooks' drumming is propulsive and energetic enough, but his solos are way too busy for my taste...nothing short of a sixteenth note the whole way out. Of great note historically and a very enjoyable recording overall.
