Rodgers and Hammerstein:Always a Favorite!!!!.......2006-10-08
I bought this CD because I want to get my hands on everything where Ron Raines is singing. He starts the CD with a beautiful rendition of OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING. Unfortunately, that is the only thing he sings. The other singers are good, too. I thought it was interesting to have Pat Suzuki sing BALI HAI. Her version is different from the original but very beautiful. All of Rodgers and Hammerstein's music is beautiful and sometimes moving and inspirational. Unless you own every R and H musical, buy this!

wrong artists.......2007-01-11
ISBN 056775077723 is not the cd with Charles Hart, John Barrowman and Claire Moore.
This isbn is for a terrible version with the Orlando Pops conducted by Andrew Lane with mezzo soprano; Marguerite Krull and baritone; Justin White. This version the singing lacks passion and is grating and the orchestra is disjointed and thoroughly unmelodic.
Thank goodness I bought used for only a $1. I still want the one with Barrowman and Moore.
Amazon's Fault?.......2005-04-05
Well, I was looking up my favorite Phantom music when I found this CD. I listened to the samples of music they gave, and was entranced by the lovely Phantom and the voice of Christine. I bought it without a second thought.
Though I assumed that it was a mistake that the song 'Memory' from Cats played as 'Music of the Night' I assumed that was simply a mistake and dismissed it.
However, I got the CD today, and eagerly put it into my walkman. Out came a Christine and Phantom duet I had never heard before. And was eager to avoid!!!
They were horrid singers!! Definetly NOT the Angels I had anticipated....
Let the buyer beware... I'm terribly disappointed.
Nothing like the original.......2004-04-19
I first discovered this CD hidden well beneath the depths of my father's collection. after seeing the play on broadway, i decided to pop it in. that was my mistake.
THIS WILL NEVER COMPARE TO THE ORIGINAL RECORDING!!! who picked Graham Bickley to be the Phantom? i mean, come on! he's a singing joke next to Michael Crawford, anyone would understand that. I mean, sure, the guy can sing, but simply being able to pull off a few notes does NOT make you one of the most immortal charecters of all time. this is something that Michael Crawford does, and pulls it off with perfection. BUUUT, unfortunately, Graham is not a strong candidate. there's no interest in his singing. it's all wooden and boring.
claire moore, on the other hand, i rather liked. i read what some people have said before, but i slightly disagree. i thought that she had a wonderfully passionate voice. she actually has charecter to it that even sarah brightman could never have. i'm sorry, but sarah is suffering a simmilar affliction that graham is unfortunate to be influenced by. both are good singers, with all the technicalities correct. but when it comes to a truly passionate performance, moore and crawford have it right.
so buy this, if you wish. it's a good cd, though the orchestrations are not that "WOW" either. the rest of the cast is adequate. but i would recommend the highlights of the original recording. sorry, i'm a purist.
For Extreme Collectors Only!.......2004-01-09
FYI: The version of this CD that I have is all Phantom songs.
This recording of Phantom was not that great. First of all, the orchestrations were so unbelievable weak for the first 4 songs, then got better.
I really did not like Claire Moore's voice on this recording. Her voice is weak, and unemotional, besides the fact that she is not a strong soprano (at least not here), she truly sounds like a shrill mezzo-soprano. When she sings the high E at the end of POTO, she sounds like me trying to hit it anywhere but the shower. She can't compare to Rebecca Caine (Canada recording) or even Sarah Brightman (London Recording).
Graham Bickley as the Phantom was slightly better, but not as strong as Michael Crawford, and he can't even hold a candle to Phantom I saw live, Brad Little. His Music Of The Night is better than some, but not great.
John Barrowman is okay as Raoul, but I've heard much better. He has slightly more emotion than his cast mates, but loses it during All I Ask Of You.
The Good Thing About It:
1. Another Phantom CD!!!!!
2. It switches back and forth from bad to good.
3. During Prima Donna you can actually understand what someone besides Carlotta is singing!
Well..........2002-10-06
Am I the only one not enjoying Claire Moore? I find her voice stiff and operatic, and not excactly enjoyable on the very high and very low notes. And her vibrato on the high notes is very un-natural. When I hear Christines, I want to be seduced by their nightingale voices. Well. Claire Moore is NOT a nightingale...
And why is Graham Bickley casted as the Phantom? He would make the greatest Raoul - but the Phantom? No. He's never played the part, and he's not got the haunting voice the Phantom should have. I have really enjoyed Mr. Bickley before, in Miss Saigon, Which Witch and other demanding musicals, and he was actually the reason why I bought the CD. But boy, did he disappoint me. He's doing an OK version of "Music of the night" and "Past the point of no return", but as I mentioned, he's a lot more "Raoul-material".
I would love to hear more of Gay Soper as Madame Giry, but unfortuneately, she's barely hearable in "Primadonna".
The other main roles is doing more than fine. It's nice to hear a Meg with a voice. It took me some time to get used this records Raoul, but now I even enjoy him.... And the Carlotta is hitting the notes.
This CD has got the newer lyrics, for example on "Think of me" and "Wishing....again". I, of course, are more fond of the original texts...
The orchestra is doing fine, although the pipe organ-like sound which is in "Overture" and the title duet, sounds really, really fake!
All in all, you can hear that this is a cheaper CD than the other cast CD's, but it's worth it's money. I would give it 3,5. And if you are a fan, you simply ought to own this. At least just to compare Graham Bickley and Claire Moore to Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman...

Customer Reviews:
Good programming, but poor quality.......2000-04-24
Mr Smith is the most recorded bassoon soloist. However, quantity does not necessarily mean quality. Some of his recordings hold an acceptable level, but far too many of them should be avoided. For bassoonists, it is sort of sad that his recordings are often the most easily available. I would recommend anyone interested in bassoon as a solo instrument to look to artists like Klaus Thunemann, Dag Jensen, Sergio Azzolini, Knut Sønstevold, Pascal Gallois, David McGill, etc, many more are also good. All of these bassoonists are or have been principal bassoonists of major orchestras. Mr Daniel Smith has never occupied a position in a major orchestra. There is a reason for that. The number of recordings he has made, is a sad example of what money can buy.
BTW, I have a suspicion that many of the reviews seen here of his discs, are written by himself.
World's Greatest Bassoon Player.......2000-03-10
Having heard Mr Smith in Classical Concerts as well as playing superb jazz I cannot recommend highly enough any of his recordings. His Vivaldi concerto recordings have received awards both here in the UK and in the US. This apart from a full page in the Penguin Review of CDs, reviews in Classic CD and Fanfare as well as articles on his life and work, and his great passion for his instrument and his wish to make it better known throughout the world both as a classical instrument and also for jazz. The disc in question is not only enjoyable music to hear but contains great playing. I have had many hours of very happy listening to Bravo Bassoon and the Vivaldi Concerto recordings. I urge you to listen to these discs and to include them in your record library.
Bravo Daniel Smith.......2000-03-02
This is one of my favorite CD's from Daniel Smith's recordings. I am continually delighted by the range of his virtuosity. From Vivaldi to Joplin, the rich tones of his bassoon pleases the ear. I am a particular fan of his jazz performances.
Bravo Indeed!.......2000-02-21
One of the most delightful and surprising discs I have run across is Bravo Bassoon. I came upon Daniel Smith with his classical hat on; but I love this recording with its range of music from Joplin through Schubert and Gershwin. In this age of "crossover" this is a truly inspired choice of repertory; and the unusual use of the bassoon is enchanting. Try the Joplin tracks, or the Melody in F by Rubinstein. The adaptations of the music are really good. I loved the choice of music -- I think it is a really well-balance programme for this kind of disc -- and the sensitive accompaniments of Jonathan Still is a real asset. I noticed not long ago that Daniel Smith was also playing at London's Pizza on the Park as a jazz bassoonist! I now want to get along to hear this excellent musician live and am quite looking forward to his jazz. Smith must simply be Mr Bassoon with all the recordings he has made and his appeal with both popular and classical music. I have heard tracks from his recordings often on the station Classic FM in the UK and I can see why he is such a favourite. I am getting more than my money's worth from this CD, which I play regularly.
A Delightful Crossover.......2000-02-17
As an ardent fan of Daniel Smith's Vivaldi recordings I was most pleased to receive "Bravo Bassoon" for my birthday from a bassoonist friend who also appreciates his virtuosity. What fun to hear the rich, sonorous tones of Mr. Smith's in varied selections from strictly classical to opera to ragtime to the likes of Jerome Kern. Maybe Mr. Smith could bring us a strictly jazz bassoon recording...with his talents, that would be heavenly!

One in a million.......2002-08-23
I've been listening to Lou Pardini's songs for more than 2 years now... especially the song "What Might Have Been". Although I only bought one of his released albums "Look The Other Way" (So hard to find from music store house though). I was fascinated with the songs "We've Got So Far To Go" and "I Just Had To Fall". Yet the rest of the songs are all great... I'm telling you, it's worth it!
The Best!.......2001-11-08
I love Lou Pardini's songs soooo much! Espesially the songs "What Might Have Been" and " How Can I Stop Loving You" they are all great =)
Look the other way.......2000-07-12
Was going around the cd shops when i heard his song playing, asked for assistance to listen to his tracks. "Need i say more" to his music, I fell in love with all of them. On second thought, i bought both of his albums. "I'll always be there" is awesome, from the first few bars down to the last. Combining true music thats totally relaxing yet upbeat at times. A great talent!
Just feels right!.......1999-10-22
"Time For Love" by Lou Pardini. Do you like modern jazz but wish there were more vocal tracks? This is the CD for you! Lou's got the voice and lyrics that sets each melody apart. The music is fresh and well polished. Each song on this CD could be a single, there are no "fill in" tracks. Want something new? This is it, truely, a diamond in the ruff, in a world full of rehashed 70's memories.
