The debut release from African-jazz ensemble Dumazz is a CD-sized party, and the listener is most emphatically invited. An appealing mix of African rhythms, jazz riffs, rock & roll, and even a guitar solo or two reminiscent of Bela Fleck's banjo is what's to be found on
Mother Rhythm. Given the album's overwhelming cheerfulness, it by rights should have been released in high summer in time for beach parties, but it's enjoyable at any time of the year. Things kick off with the highly danceable "Makossa" and proceed to range all over the musical map, with plenty of solid bass lines and excellent percussion work. Overall,
Mother Rhythm is a party for any time of the year.

One of the best albums I own........2007-01-31
I loved this album when I was in high school, and I love it today. All of the players are great, but Barry Borden (drummer) stands out. The lick in the intro of "Hard Rock Lover" is amazing. "Baby Love" is one of my favorite R&B tracks of all time. The bass and drum stuff is exceptional, and Joyce Kennedy's vocal can stand up to anything. "Mickey's Monkey" is the coolest remake ever. It's an unlikely amalgam of The Miracles' lyric sung over Led Zeppelin's "Custard Pie", and - believe it or not - it works really, really well. This is a great sounding (even from the 70s), well produced rock/funk album. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAY Under rated!!!!!!.......2006-07-12
This funked up rock band was before it's time. This is truly tasteful funk at it's best. Joyce has the voice of a true Diva, more soul than today's modern day Divas. Anyone would agree that Joyce can shine just as bright sitting beside all the Arethas, the Gladyses and Tinas. MF is one brilliant mixture of attitude and talent. HOW they ever slid under the radar and missed all the billboard/award blah blah will forever be a mystery to me. Frankly they were short changed and robbed of one heck of a career ride.
big slab-o-funk rock.......2006-06-17
Mother's Finest's "Another Mother Further" made the rounds at my high school when I was just a wee lad in junior high, and it kicked everyone's butt who heard it. From the opening of "Mickey's Monkey" to "Hard Rock Lover" this album was in everyone's heavy rotation. The band, from an Atlanta suburb (my locality), applied a beautiful bone-shattering combination of bass-heavy funk grooves along with serious rock and roll guitars and gospel-tinged vocals mixed together in a bottom-end heavy production that still thumps hard today. "Baby Love" still makes first-time listeners pause or stop to listen a while, it's that good. Even today it's still sounds fresh because this type of high-quality funk/rock never goes completly out of style. Production values are clean and sound better the louder it goes. Earth Wind and Fire have nothing on these guys. They bring the funk and the rock and shove it in your face and down your narrow little throat.
Waaay Ahead Of Their Time & Painfully Underrated!!.......2006-01-31
Man, southern rock / funk interracial hybrid
Mother's Finest was one of the
rockinist-funkiest-slamminest bands ever!
Coming out of Atlanta, GA (Doraville) with a sound all
their own, they were contemporaries with Funk / Rock
pioneers like early Funkadelic, Rufus featuring
Chaka Khan & The Isley Brothers as well as southern
rock icons like Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers,
The Doobie Brothers, etc., but they never-ever got
the love and repsect (sadly!) that they so
richly deserved!
This 1977 album was my first introduction
to them by a then teenaged cousin of mine
and over the next three albums:
This one, 1978's more R&B-influenced but still hot
"Mother Factor", which begat the classic hit
"Love Changes" (probably their most remembered!)
and the blistering "Mother's Finest LIVE" from 1979,
I became a definite fan!
The soulful and powerful vocals of lead singer
Joyce "Babyjean" Kennedy are right up there with
Chaka Khan's, Ann Wilson's and Pat Benetar's for
their penetrative powers!--Talk about underrated!
The band itself was funky and hard rockin' as hell
all at the same time, and their live show was high
energy at it's best!--I saw them in 1979 at age 15!
It's a shame that they aren't mentioned up there with
other 70's rock greats, but I'll be damned if they
don't deserve to be!
There are alot of closet MF fans around the world and
quite a few of their guitar and vocal licks have
found their way into many a rock and R&B
album over the years!
The gems of this album are "Baby Love",
"Truth'll Set You Free", "Thank You For The Love",
"Mickey's Monkey" (a rocked out version of the old Motown classic!)
and their funk / rocky answer to a then
pervading disco sound "Dis Go Dis Way"...
All-n-All a good gem for anyone who digs funky
southern 70's hard rock!---Buy It!
One of the most underrated albums of the 1970s.......2006-01-07
My older sister had this on LP back when it was released. Mother's Finest is one of the most underrated bands of their era. While they had some success, they weren't nearly as successful as they should have been. This is a truly classic album. It is the perfect party album. It is a great blend of hard rock n' roll, funk, & R&B. Bands today just don't make music like this. They all pale in comparison to what was created on this album. It's hard to pick a favorite. They're all classics. Go buy this album. It is very much relevant today. All generations can get off on this stuff.

Mother's Finest at their Best!!.......2007-04-02
This CD is great! All of their best songs on one album - what more could you ask for??
Nice CD.......2004-08-10
Mother's Finest recently Rocked the small town of Culloden, GA and I was there. Seen them 3 times in my youth but for me, this time, they were better than ever. I bought this CD at the concert and stayed a bit after they were done Jamm'in. I got to talk to Moses Mo for about 15 minutes, talked to Doc, John, Wyzard, and got all of their autographs...they signed the CD!!!
Even got Baby Jean's autograph, but didn't get to talk to her as she had many people around her.
I think the CD is a good combination of their work through the years, it allows the "newby" to know their sound and what they are about. I admit that there are some songs that should be on this CD if it truely is a "very best" CD, but only a long time fan would know this. But think about it...if you were in their shoes, would YOU put ALL of your best on one cd? Of course not...you want to continue to sell the others as well.
Most of the songs from "Another Mother Further" are on this cd and it was one of the best albums they put out.
So, I can't complain, I think it's a great CD, but mine is the best cause it has all of the autographs on it!!!
All of the band members are extremely cool and so easy to talk to, they are one of a kind. Very nice people and devoted to their fans.
Would Be A Platinum Band Today.......2003-11-26
Okay, I admit I bought this CD just to re-live my college days here in Tampa listening to Mother's Finest at the Performing Arts Center (as local show bar) in the mid 70s. I expected to play it once and put it down. Boy was I wrong. Twelve of the 15 songs are great, the mastering/sound is fantastic and this group rocks! I just don't get why they didn't "take off ". This is a Pop, Rock, Soul and Fusion CD at its finest (ha ha). Check out the drumming.
Come On Everyone calm down!!!!!.......2003-08-26
Yes Im a huge fan, yes this album is ok. But just ask yourselves. How can a Best Of CD not include ONE track from their 2 best albums by far; Iron Age and "Black Radio.."
Nah, this is ok, but they didnt hit their stride, and WHAT a stride it was, till 1980. Save your money and buy those two great albums Ive already mentioned!
Incidentally Im very very disappointed at their new one, after waiting for over a decade. That is sad!
My first exposure to funk.......2003-05-22
The first & only time I saw Mother's Finest was at Six Flags Over Georgia amusment park in the summer of 1981. A friend said he had two tickets to the show, & that park admission was included in the price. Being a rollercoaster freak, I went with him. I didn't even know who this band was or what they sounded like, but my friend seemed really psyched to be going. Holy *Bleep*! this band was like nothing I had ever seen! The singer was hotter than hell! That lady could sing like nobody else in the world, and she was the finest looking woman! Then I see this white guy playing a guitar laying down a rock riff, while the bassist backs it with a syncopated funk bottom that made everyone move their body. The drummer was playing a beat so sweet & complete that the whole damn house melted down! It truly was the best concert I have ever been to Period. That was 22 years ago, over 100 concerts ago, & the flavor of that total knockout-blow of baptism into funk music still lingers to this day. This is the band by which all funk should be measured. Mother's Finest is the one & only Funk / Rock band you'll ever need. All others pale by comparison.

A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
the perfect movie.......2007-03-10
My old Gene did it: the perfect movie, the perfect american history, the perfect music. Some people think musicals are "B" movies. I say them: look about the dream, the performance, the music.
Who can say what is beatiful? Look at faces of Gene and Stan during the shooting on the set: whole concentration and attention for everything.
This is a unique moment in their story, and in the story of cinema.
Unforgettable.
I LOVE MY FAVORITE SONG, AND THANKS TO THIS CD I CAN LISTEN TO IT ALL DAY LONG!!.......2007-01-28
I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)
Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16
Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.
Great CD.......2006-03-20
This is a great CD of music for your family to listen to. Our family enjoys it very much.
musical memories.......2006-03-14
I enjoyed this CD very much, as I remember seeing the movie years ago. I grew up watching MGM musicals and this was one of the best. I loved all of the wonderful songs that came from this movie. Great sound on this CD.

An unlikely but very successful comeback album........2004-09-19
Betty Wright enjoyed a career revival thanks to such hits as "No Pain, No Gain" and "After The Pain". With this album, Betty proved that you could still create and record REAL soul music and find success with it. The only songs I did not like were "Ms. Time" and "Miami Groove" --the rest of the album, however, is nothing short of superb.
The Wright Comeback CD.......2002-06-27
With the ever changing shifts in music, Betty Wright experienced a huge lull in her career in the early to mid 80s. However, in 1988, she again took center stage, taking the industry by storm. Wright exceeded in teaching all the R&B diva wanna-beez (i.e., Paula Abdul, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson) how real Soul music was suppose to sound with "Mother Wit".
From beginning to end, this CD is fantastic. Arguably the best effort of her entire career (with 1989's "4U2NJOY" coming in a close second), Betty has simply never sounded better. The lyrics are clever, witty and wise and are delivered with sheer exuberance. With huge singles like "After the Pain" and "No Pain, No Gain", it was such a joy to hear Betty all over the radio once again. She proved you can't keep a good woman down.
If you only buy one Betty Wright CD, this should be the one! A pure listening delight.
Mother Wit.......2000-09-06
I bought this CD for one particular song: After the Pain. I could relate to this song so much that I could listen to it all day, every day. But there were a few others that I also enjoyed: No Pain (No Gain) is another alltime favorite of mine. I also liked Love Days, Unsolicited Advice, and Say it Again. I didn't care for the others so much; however, it is a great CD for Betty fanatics!
Love It!!.......2000-08-08
I love Betty Wright. As a child I listen to the songs of her, gladys, patti, and all of the great ones. As an adult I appreciate the words..... NO Pain No Gain.... "In order to get something, you gotta give something In order to be something you gotta go through something" What more can you say after that.....
No Pain NO Gain.......2000-04-17
I like the song maybe because the song has hit home i have lived some of the same things that she is sang about

Album Description
The first reissue of legendary funkateers Black Merda, out of print since its Chess Records release in the `70s. Too late for the Hendrix generation and too early for the Parliament/Funkadelic generation, this group defines `70s psychedelic folk-rock-funk!
Customer Reviews:
Superb Rock Music.......2006-07-05
This music is trippy. Black Merda have a distinctive style that I have never like before; everyone seems to compare them to Hendrix or Parliament/Funkadelic and maybe the reason for that is because of the colour of their skin but I dont really want to get to that.Listening to Over and Over (which is my favourite track on the cd) makes you just want to get up and grab your wife, girlfriend whatever and make love to her in a way that she has never been done before and surprise surprise that track is nowhere near a love song;infact it is a bluesy funky rythmic flame that makes you want more and more! Now each track has a special feel to it, the guys are great, the band is tight and edgy and they dont sing about mushy mushy love i wanna have fun lets go to the beach man; this s@#T is real; their lyrics are insightful, and make you think. I dont understand how or why they never got the credit that they deserve but they trully rock!Buy this album now and I assure you that you will keep playing it for a long time.
Reality Will Cause Your Fantasies to Die.......2006-03-02
Here's the ultimate "whatever happened to..." cult act for fans of the super heavy funk. Black Merda was a powerful funk-rock band who released a couple of forgotten albums back in the early 70s and then disappeared. Apparently they've enjoyed a limited but knowledgeable cult following, and someone finally decided to create this reissue package, which fully reproduces the albums Black Merda (1970) and Long Burn the Fire (1972). This band, along with this CD reissue, will be of great historical interest to all fans of early funk and the mostly forgotten black rock of the era. Black Merda' s sound can certainly be compared to early Funkadelic, and also to late-period Jimi Hendrix. They also had more of a classic soul feel than either of those, plus some surprising elements from acoustic folk rock. This wide and astonishing variety in the Black Merda sound can be heard in tracks like the Hendrixian guitar crusher "Cynthy-Ruth," the acoustic lullaby "Think of Me," the dramatic heavy soul ballads "For You" and "My Mistake," the psychedelic funk atmospheres of "Windsong" and "We Made Up," and the gutwrenching urban soul dramas "The Folks From Mother's Mixer" and "Lying." The original sound production (as reproduced here) is not very strong, but you surely get the feeling that Black Merda was infinitely more powerful as a live act. They also benefited strongly from skillful Temptations-like vocals and very strong lyrics about ghetto life and civil rights. Recently, the surviving members of Black Merda reunited for the benefit of their ongoing cult following, and they can count me in. [~doomsdayer520~]

Album Description
A 29 track collection of the irrepressible Ernie K-Doe, featuring his monster 1961 hit 'Mother-in-Law', which was #1 on both the pop and R&B charts. This CD gathers together the bulk of K-Doe's recordings with famed New Orleans musical legend Allen Toussaint compositions, including an alternate take of 'Mother-in-Law'. 2002.

The Emperor of the World.......2003-04-11
The Emperor of the World. The baddest motorscooter, the Greatest Boy-Child ever conceived at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. K-Doe acknowledged that Mother-In-Law, along with the Star Spangled Banner and, perhaps, Amazing Grace, were the only songs that would be standing at the end of time. But K-Doe was a humble man. All 29 of these songs will be there at the end, including the alternate takes. Any other questions? Burn, K-Doe, Burn.

Excellent! Finally music I can learn to drum with!.......2006-11-27
I've been looking everywhere for some good drumming music to drum along to. This really works for me. Lots of different beats to learn and done repetitively enough that I can remember them, without being redundant and boring. Good stuff.

Album Description
Don't be deceived by these familiar titles. This jazzy recording is not just for little ones. Children of all ages will be finger-snapping and strutting along to the cool, catchy jazz arrangements of well known rhymes like "Three Blind Mice" and "Pop Goes the Weasel." They will be singing along to "Starlight, Starbright" and "Simple Simon", stomping and growling along with "Mad Man Polka," and dancing to the beat of "Boogie Woogie Ghost" and "This Old Man." Besides being just plain fun to listen to, this collection of familiar songs performed in unusual ways makes it a good introduction to jazz and other musical styles.
