This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Talented young group of musicians.......2006-12-27

I took a chance on this CD after seeing the trumpet player Troy Andrews on television (studio 60) and wanting to hear more...I was not disappointed.

In places on this enjoyable CD the youth of this group shows - in some ways this makes for a raw, fresh sound. In others it simply reminds you that these young men have years ahead of them to hone their craft. In places the CD really takes off though, most notably on the third track, "get down", a hard driving tuba-bass heavy funkified jam that will have you dancing around in your living room in your boxers, hoping the neighbors aren't looking in your windows. This track was worth the price of admission alone.

I love the blend of styles, though it doesn't work as well for some of the tracks as others. Still, there's plenty of good music on this CD, and I'm glad to have supported these players with my purchase. I almost with the entire CD was funk, as that is what these guys seem to do best. Echoes of Tower of Power shine through in places - they all seem to play more confident on the funk tracks.

I gave it 4 stars, but 3.5 seems a bit more appropriate. No insult to the group at all - the music is excellent, but production quality is not entirely consistent, and in places it comes off as a bit raw. Where it works though, it really works - track 7 is a terrific funky horn-based jam and they're really in the pocket throughout. Likewise with the aforementioned "get down" (track 3), and track 8 is another bright spot on the CD.

I look forward to hearing what these guys do with their bright musical futures. If you're a fan of upbeat funky music with a tight horn section and subtle hammond organ throughout you will probably enjoy this CD.

Heralded internationally as an outstanding artist, trumpeter Jens Lindemann has enlisted the talents of The Canadian Staff Band's 30-piece ensemble for his second Marquis recording, Rising Sun.

Extremely Fine Trumpet Playing in a Very Eclectic Program.......2006-09-12

This disc is somewhat in the vein of Philip Smith's CD titled
My Song of Songs. Smith's disc is predominantly arrangements
of Christian hymns and songs, while Lindemann's is secular
except for two tracks. Both are recorded with excellent
Salvation Army brass bands.

Lindemann's sound, range, technical facility and breadth of
musical expression are phenomenal. Trumpet players will be
astonished at the level of control he has over his tone.
Lindemann excels at selling each piece, whether it be a
light piece or a substantial work such as Allen Vizzutti's
new composition. Musical maturity is evident here. He is
stylistically right-on.

Lindemann has a very strong high range and uses it
frequently -- perhaps a bit too frequently, but if I had
the ability to generate excitement like that, I might do
the same. It remains in good taste. Lindemann conveys a
lot of joy in this recording. The use of fluegelhorn and
piccolo trumpet add a variety of colors to his sound and
keep the disc interesting.

A special note must be made of the gorgeous piccolo trumpet
playing in the Vizzutti piece. It is an effortless, full,
and fluid sound. This piece alone is worth the price of the
disc.

The instrumentation of this project -- trumpet with brass
band -- will limit the appeal of the recording for many. This
is unfortunate, for the playing is on an extremely high level
throughout and the music making transcends the instruments
themselves.

Very highly recommended.

The Jazz Crusaders before they dropped the Jazz in their name and just became The Crusaders. Recorded shortly after moving to LA from Houston this jazz group is smokin hot. This album has been noted to be one of the top 100 jazz albums of all time. Can't argue with that. Their music weaves together and they accompany each other so well. Awesome. The Crusaders are my favorite jazz groups and this album is at the top of the list.

One of those magic albums!.......2000-04-25

This is one of those live jazz albums that truly captures the ambiance of "being there". The recording truly gives that three-dimensional sound that is missing from so many live albums. And the performances are full of energy. A great companion to this album is the "Live '68" album, unfortunately not yet on CD

One of the best albums in my collection of Crusaders stuff.......1999-06-24

The cut "You Don't Know What Love Is" boasts of one of the most soul-full tenor sax solos by Wilton Felder. The trombone of Wayne Henderson is very smooth, too. "Scratch" is very upbeat. The way that Felder and Henderson play harmonys, and unisons, with one another is a Crusaders trademark sound. This "sound" is well presented on this album. "Milestones" and "Doin' That Thing" are also great cuts as are "Blues Up Tight" and "Miss It". On the whole one of their finest efforts. I recommend this album, and the Crusaders, to anyone and everyone who likes good jazz.

Excellent.. New Arrangement.......2006-04-19

Not sure what to expect. But I thoroughly enjoy it.

At least, I have some doubt at the beginning that it would be the same old ABBA crap again, like so many tributes.

And I expect it to be funky. You know. Like move your hands up and down kind of funky. But it's very jazzy, like torch songs at time. Kind of like American Songbook.

It's worth my time after the first listening. Viktori's vocal is smokey. The arrangement is totally different. I didn't recognize most of the tunes instantly at the first few chords.

Overall, it's very soothing and romantic. I strongly recommend it.

The man with the red horn (yes, he plays a red trombone) and the smoky voice really hit me right between the eyes this time. An absolutely incredible CD. For those of you who are really into the ABBA thing, stay clear. There is a risk you won't like what Nils and his Funk Unit troopers did to your favourite music. Actually, I have even played this CD to die-hard ABBA-fans of Swedish origin and it took time before they realized what was going on. In other words: not particularly true to the original but who wanted that anyway? Instead, you get the most sensational funk/soul-CD I have heard in a long time. Great musicians, great sound, great music. Buy it.

I entirely agree with the other reviewers, this is is a top notch production - jazz funk at it's best, and this is an understatement. Let me tell you a little anecdote: I was working in Sweden for a few days and my hotel was not far from the main train station to the airport in the downtown area. Well, having just arrived I ventured to the next CD shop trying to locate a CD by Nils Landgren.In a shop close to my hotel I talked to a guy of whom I thought he may know something about this type of music - and guess what: it didn't klick at first but it was Magnum Coltrane Price,the N.L. Funk unit bass guitar player. Wow. In any case, I got to hear the N.L. funk unit live that evening and it was magic (understatement again). Thanks to a great band. --- Back to the case: The CD captures thruthfully the spirit of the live performance, and if you really like funk jazz - this is it, and it is as good as it gets. Enjoy.

Best Cannonball Adderley tribute album and beyond!.......2001-02-25

I have 3 Cannonball Adderley cd's and also purchased 3 tribute albums (Cannonball: funky soul music, Eric Marienthal: walk tall) and this not only pays tribute but goes beyond and adds to it in a funkier way (i am sure Cannonball not only approves (from jazz-funk heaven) but enjoys the direction they gave his music. Some of Nils own compositions like Mother Fonk sound like maybe he was chanelling the master's own playing into it! If anyone reads this and knows of other tribute albums or artists who have that Jazz-Funk lineage, please e-mail and recommend. Thanks!

A really funky and grovy album.......1999-10-14

This album is one of the greatest album that I ever heard. I heard Nisse Landgren and the Funk Unit live this summer, and they play many songs from the record, and he was great. If you wanne hear som great Swedish funkjazzy musicians you should buy this one. I think that the Funk Unit is one of the greatest artist in Sweden, he played with Maceo Parker once. I can also recomend the live album from Montreux, it's great and Magnum is so cool.

All right guys... Stop everything!!! If you don't have this CD, I guess you are missing something really good. I saw Nils Landgren in february 99 at the Jazz pizza express in London and it was great!! Just listen to the introduction of the first track 'walk tall' and you will be addicted to Landgren's groove for a long time... If one day I have to go on a desert island for a while, I am sure that 'paint it blue' will be one of the 5 CDs I'll take along with me. As for the four others... I don't know yet (but surely one of Georges Brassens')

fred wesley said it himself george clinton should have left this in the can somewhere these were a bunch of unrelesed tracks recorded from the 70's and george clinton wanting to put out some new pfunk picked these jams this is awful the best song on here is lickety split which has a smoking bassline from bootsy collins and fred gives one hellava trombone solo other than that don't waste your money.
