Amazon.com essential recording

This live recording by the Bill Evans Trio at the Village Vanguard on June 25, 1961, marked the end of one of the most sublime instrumental combinations in jazz history when bassist Scott LaFaro died in a car accident 10 days later. This unit is underdocumented because Evans, a notorious perfectionist, was reluctant to record. The interchange between Evans on piano, LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums is balletic in its balance of emotional beauty and technical precision. Multiple takes of "Gloria's Step," "Alice in Wonderland," "All of You," and "Jade Visions" show how the invention these players brought to each performance makes repeated material sound like movements in a suite. --John Swenson

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's that special.......2007-01-11

I read a lot about this, and thought it couldn't be that good. It is. "Waltz for Debby" is even finer. This was Genius at work.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-01-10

Anything Bill Evans plays is wonderful! I love his style of playing. This music is so calming.

5 out of 5 stars Quietly Powerful.......2006-10-12

Sometimes I listen to this recording and I think to myself, "Why did I stop taking piano lessons at seven years old?" But I am glad that some little boys continued with their lessons; notably Bill Evans.

Bill Evans is so understated...so refined...so elegant that some may think he doesn't have an edge. Not true. His edge is refinement. His playing is never heavy handed, it never overtakes the musical situation, it is so subtle and yet so powerful that you just want more and more...

I also like the different version of each song. It's funnny how a little twist here and a little there can change the whole feel of a song. I remember how my mother, a classically trained pianist, would rehearse for weeks on end on a certain piece of music. She'd play the piece note for note, chord for chord according to what the sheet music had laid down, and then she would do something really interesting after she had learned the piece, she'd throw the music away and played according to the wants and needs of her own soul.

That's the feel I get from this CD. That everyone is playing from their own soul level and yet coming together to be as one for this recording. It's a very powerful recording and it's perfect for early morning writing....mmm...just like what I'm doing now.

I may have given up the piano, but I'm glad I still play at another kind of keyboard.

Peace & Blessings

3 out of 5 stars i just cannot understand why.......2006-08-08

this CD arranges the songs the way it does. I love the sounds, the jazz, the piano, the bass, yeah all of that stuff is good and all, but why do I have to hear the same song twice in a row multiple times? Explain to me why there shouldn't be the six differnt songs (by title) and then the four repeats tacked onto the end so as to excite a "Wow, yeah that was a great song, I don't mind hearing it again" instead of a "I just heard that song?"

I reccommend getting a recording that doesn't do this. There are many versions of the music created on this legendary day.

5 out of 5 stars Bill Evans.......2006-03-04

One of the best albums ever made. The "last Recording" in San F. (Berkley) is just as good.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible CD Layer.......2006-12-14

These Analogue Productions hybrid SACD's have incredible CD layers, and they are the best sounding CD's in my large collection. I wish Doug Sax remastered everything that I've ever purchased - jazz, blues, or rock. If you happen to like CCR, listen to what Analogue Productions did with their catalog. They were remastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, who also happen to be ace mastering guru's.

5 out of 5 stars Buy It Now.......2006-06-30

I have both the regular CD and the 20 bit version which shows better separation between the instruments and you also get more of the 'you are there' feeling. However the regular CD is also very enjoyable. The performance and the quality of the recording - considering the age - is outstanding. You get a sense that there are no prima-donna's here. Nobody is on some ego-trip. All the musicians participate and communicate with such ease and superb artistry. I feel fortunate to get a glimpse of what it must havee been like that particular Sunday at the Village Vanguard.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2006-04-16

Just how good is this? To give you an idea, even if released today, these recordings would still be considered the most innovative trio music ever. If you are even remotely into jazz music, buy both this album and Waltz for Debby. They are the zenith of jazz trios. The music is absolutely sublime. I am not knowledgeable of the technical aspects of jazz, but I can still tell that Scott LaFaro shattered the norms for what bassists could do. Bill Evans lyrical quality is unmatched. Paul Motian lays a perfect place for Evans and LaFaro to operate on.

The tracks that stand out the most to me are:
"My Man's Gone Now" - A difinitive version. LaFaro is an absolute shark on the bass, with deep, booming, raspy basslines, while maintaining the proper tone for a somber song. Evans' voicings are perfect.

"Jade Visions". Both takes. Take 2 is a little slower. Written by LaFaro. They are both heavenly. The interplay is stunning, even after 1000s of listens.

Without a doubt, this and Waltz for Debby are desert-island albums for me.

5 out of 5 stars Vanguard' pure piano recording .......2006-03-27

The essecne of the Vanguard sessions is as fresh today as it was 46 years ago....as a matter of fact the music has mellowed with time like a fine wine. Evans' simple style lends itself to the trio setting and the chemistry beween the musicians tells you they listened to each other and the results are still worthy of praise. 'Tis truely a shame this was Eddie Gomez' last date with Bill and Paul. This album truely passes the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Telepathic trio.......2006-03-13

It's a shame that bassist Scott LaFaro died so young, and was so underrecorded. He helped redefine the bass in small group settings, especially in trios. He contributed a lot to jazz for only being in his 20s.

This is one of those albums that is hard to stop listening to once you put on the first track. There is so much connectivity between the players, which creates a sense of telepathy. Not only are these three players amazing musicians in their own right, but the way they play together on the bandstand is very unique as well. It swings, it pushes ahead, it lays back -- it seems to cover all the basses.

Bill Evans -- piano
Scott LaFaro -- bass
Paul Motian -- drums

3 very free and creative players playing as ONE.

The only other trio I could compare this to would be Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette. It's not exactly lounge music, but it's not too far out that one couldn't sit through it and enjoy most to everything about it. I like putting this album on on Sunday afternoons.

5 out of 5 stars Another Classic!.......2006-02-19

Great live trio performances througout the disc, even better than his "Explorations" for me. Sonically very clean, no blemish. Highly recommended.
