5 out of 5 stars Glorious.......2006-07-31

I have listened to a great deal of Orthodox music and I think this is by far one of the most beautiful collections I have ever heard. Actually, it is one of the most georgeous pieces of music of any kind I have heard.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome... heavenly... ethereal Russian Choral Music.......2006-05-21

This Awesome, ethereal, heavenly ANCIENT ECHOES was a gift of my friend, Dick Talley last year. Seldom does my early awakening miss listening to these choral chants of the Orthodox Monastery!

If I could choose the more interesting, comforting, fasinating polyphonic chants, they would be No.3 "The Only Begotten Son" of Golovanov, No.5 "The Lord Speaketh" and No.6 "Glory be to God in the highest" both by Bortnyansky!

Only Russian Choral Treasures are equally awesome, spiritually refreshing. When I awaken every morning around 4:00, I began listening to both these recordings, before reading or praying for friends, such as, Dick and Anita Talley.

Upon becoming 75 years of age, I tend to simplify my habit of listening to Choral Music. Most fondly reviewed by Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood, "Barbara377" (Fayetteville, GA USA)

5 out of 5 stars The Might of the Russian Male Choral Sound.......2005-10-03

The Russian liturgical music, especially that for the high holy days of Christmas and Easter, owns a mystery all its own. This splendid recording by the Chorovaya Akademia conducted by Alexander Sedov is a fine a sound as any produced on recording. Though few of the composers (with the exception of Tchaikovsky and Grechaninov) are well known outside Russia, the works are all beautifully composed and hauntingly performed. There is somewhat of a sameness to these religious works (little variation in tempi, expressive range, dynamics) but the overall effect is one of humble spirituality.

This is a fine example of the Russian choral music that is growing in popularity one the recorded repertoire and it is for this listener one of the best. Grady Harp, October 05

4 out of 5 stars Compare These 3.......2004-04-19

There are 3 different CD's about Russian Choir "A Cappella" music which can be discussed & reveal a certain enjoyment to different people with different needs or means:

"Ikon" sung by the Holst Singers on Hyperion is the middle ground that gives a well balance & beautiful music from an English choir group. If you did not know they were English, you would think of them as Russian. Most songs are Russian classics from Sviridov, Gretchaninov, Kalinnikov, & Tchaikovsky with modern versions from Part, Gorecki, & Nystedt. The highlight is from the female sopranos which give an angelic & awl inspiring spiritual uplift that must not be missed.

"Sacred Treasures" sung by several groups including The Russian State Symphony Cappelle, The Leningrad State Academic Choir, The Bulgarian National Choir, & a few other groups on Hearts of Space give the most authentic Russian that to English ears may sound slow & uneventful. Yet to a person that knows Russian, this CD will cause the most goose bumps due to its rightful intensity with music from Rachmaninov, Bortniansky, Kedrov, Gertchaninov, Tchaikovsky, Christov, Turchaninov, & Lvovski.

"Ancient Echoes" sung by the Chorovaya Akademia on RCA Victor may give the best first impression due to its well made production that will give a serious work out to any professional stereo system, yet with further study will reveal an over dramatized style that may get in the way. Songs from the composers Sheretiev, Nikolsky, Golovanov, Strokin, Bortnyansky, Grechaninov, Riutol, Tchaikovsky, & Chesnokov.

If your into Russian "A Cappella" music, give these 3 CD's a try & decided for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Quite genuine but lacking in contemplative mellowness.......2004-01-05

The fantastic cover of this cd notwithstanding (the monk in red habit is a Catholic monk, probably a Carthusian, Orthodox monks wear a different habit), this is a cd of authentic Russian religious music for Christmas and Easter composed in the last 200 years and sung by an all-male choir: the Choravaya Akademia under the direction of Alexander Sedov.

The total length of this recording is 63:25 minutes.

Compared with other such cds available on Amazon.com like Sacred Treasures I and II, Ancient Echoes has a more vigorous and folk-song style. I do not want to sound sacrilegious or cynical in the least but many of the chants sound like Red Army songs.

So if you are looking for something virile and robust, something to bolster your resolution for moral rearmament, this is the kind of music that will delight you. If on the other hand you are looking for something tenderly contemplative, buy Sacred Treasures I or II or Rachmaninoff's Vespers by the Robert Shaw Festival Singers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.

4 out of 5 stars hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

5 out of 5 stars The Hawk delivers another sermon..........2005-03-03

and right from the starting notes of the very first track, you know it's gonna be a good one. With Major Holley by his side, getting notes out of his upright that you probably didn't know existed, they can do no wrong. Then, they go right into Quincy Jones' "Quintessence" and brother, you know you're in the right place. It only gets better from there, except, of course, when it ends. But then, you just start it all over again.

This was recorded during the same two-week session that also gave us the outstanding "Desafinado" release, so, if you're interested, pick up that cd as well because it makes a very-good companion piece to this and, as always, you can't get too much of the Hawk. Plus, the Hawk playing the bossa-vibe simply must be heard to be believed. It's amazing. Dare I say it puts Getz to shame? No, I can't say that, but it's definitely dam* tasty.

You gotta get this now if you're still considering. You will definitely not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and invigorating.......2001-04-06

Coleman Hawkins has a distinctively mellow sound, which on this disk he applies to both some gorgeous ballads (Quintessence and Don't Love Me) and some upbeat so-called "folk" songs (especially Go Lil' Liza and Swingin' Scotch). I heard Go Lil' Liza playing as background at a Briazz one day and it just captured me immediately, and thanks to Amazon I was able to track this down. There are so many incredible jazz LP recordings that were made in the period 1955-70 or so where great musicians like Hawkins would just bring some musicians into a studio (or in this case Rudy Van Gelder's living room), look over some charts, work out some arrangements rather quickly and then lay down some amazing, improvised tracks like these. The playing is flawless yet totally spontaneous. There is a sense on the one hand that the players have spent many nights on stage, but that they are approaching this music with humility, just as curious as we are how it will all turn out. The bassist on this recording has a fine time, it seems, humming along with his angular solos, which if nothing else demonstrates the fluidity and brilliance of these musicians. They were improvising, yes, but they knew exactly where they were going. This disk is nicely packaged, but nothing has been added... no alt. takes, and no new liner notes to augment Stanley Dance's original notes. No need; you get your money's worth as it is.

1 out of 5 stars SHOCKING!!!.......2007-06-06

I am amazed they reissued this without adding bonus tracks like probably their best song 'Cosmos (Effect of the Sun)' b-side to 'Heartbeat like a Drum' 12inch. HOW? I don't care since I perfectly transferred that song to CD. You truly don't know Flock without hearing Cosmos.

Sad pathetic reissue to a poor album to begin with. Outright embarrassing corny lyrics displayed here. I don't mind the attempt at a new style of sound here, I have a soft spot for 'Heartbeat like a Drum' but Mike Score truly has nothing left to say. 'Dream Come True' represents the complete end of this once brilliant band.

3 out of 5 stars For fans only.......2007-03-15

This album has it's moments. I actually don't mind listening to it now, but if this was 1986 and they just released this album, I would have pissed on it, especially knowing it would have been one of their last.

With their first 3 records, I think their sound was a little too weird for most music buyers at the time. Although they are a talented band, it was total luck they scored a hit with "I Ran" because the industry was just not ready for that kind of stuff back then. I believe this 4th release was an attempt to make an album a little easier on the ears for the more conservative, average music listener. Comparing this to their first album is a huge departure where that album played on a vibe rooted in punk rock with dark synth overtones and a concept story line about alien abduction. (((The cloud is moving nearer still. Aurora borealis comes in view. .......Aurora comes in view)))

AFOS is one of my favorite bands and I consider myself a loyal fan which is why I own this album. There are at least a few really awesome tracks on this record like "Hot Tonight", "Say So Much" and "How Could You Ever Leave Me" being some of the best songs of their career, in my opinion.

There are 2 types of people when it comes to this band: Those who really love their bizare, science fiction themed weirdness and own everything they've released and those who are only looking for "I Ran". Well, "I Ran" is not on this album which means you're probably wasting your time and money with this record unless you really love 80's synth-dance music like I do.
The thing is, the last time you heard this album was probably in the mid 80's while high on coke in some modish nightclub and 20 years younger. Now that you're older, and sober, this album might not sound as good as it used to.

3 out of 5 stars From New Wave To Late 1980s Dance.......2007-02-06

This Flock of Seagulls album is a drastic shift from their spacy-sounding New Wave sound they were best remembered for to sounding like every late 1980s dance act group. Not that it's their worst effort for such a shift in music styles, though their weakest song here is "Whole Lot Of Loving".

1 out of 5 stars Where The Seagulls Went To Die (but not until after a last gasp)..........2006-02-27

First, the criticism: The departure of guitar virtuoso Paul Reynolds is what really finished off The Gulls, and the release of this album sure didn't help them stay around any longer than they should have or could have. Just about all the material on Dream Come True is light-years away from the brilliance of "I Ran", "Space-Age Love Song" or "DNA". Actually it's just a continuance of the slide that began with the Flock's second album, "Listen," which was still excellent, just not on the same level as the group's debut. The Third album, "The Story Of A Young Heart" had several genuine gems (such as "Never Again," possibly their very best song), and the potential to be a stirring and emotional opus, yet didn't quite live up to the standards of the first two albums. And the void left by Reynolds' absence must have swallowed up just about whatever creativity the band had left.

Now, the good: Dream Come True isn't a total disaster. And, if you're reading this, you must either be a new fan of the group or already own this album on vinyl or cassette. So, I do believe I can recommend this disc for any Seagulls fan without guilt or remorse. It's like that one bad album that just about any group or artist records. As a fan, you want to have it, and listening to it once in a while helps you appreciate just how great the previous (or later) releases are.

After reevaluating the album as a whole, I've come to agree with most fans that "Hot Tonight" is the best song here. That in itself wouldn't be saying much, but it is really a good song, worthy of being on their second or third albums had it been written during those times. It's a solid, bass-heavy rocker, with some surprisingly good vocals throughout, especially at the end.

I've always questioned why "Who's That Girl" was the single from the LP, it just doesn't do anything for me. "How Could You Ever Leave Me" is far superior, with some fat guitar work that's (slightly) reminiscent of Paul Reynolds. That should have been the single. "Whole Lot of Loving" follows to close out the album, and it's a nice little ballad. Not quite as good as, say, "Transfer Affection" from "Listen" but a good song nonetheless. I can't say much about the other songs, except to mention "Love On Your Knees." Most fans would agree this is the Flock's worst song ever, but again after re-listening to it, it made me think, if Prince had wrote this song (and he could have, given the sexual innuendo) no one would say one bad thing about it. I say that "Heartbeat Like A Drum" and "Cry Like A Baby" are just plain awful, and should have never seen the light of day.

Conclusion: if you know these songs and like them, (or are just a loyal fan), get the disc. The remastering does sound good. There are no extras here, though. No b-sides or rare demos, nada. Not even lyrics or commentary. Makes you wonder why sometimes record companies can't go that extra step and give the customer a little more value for their money.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst of A Flock Of Seagulls..........2006-01-28

I remember being a high school senior back in 1985, and listening to AFOS first two albums nearly nonstop. Then "Story of A Young Heart" came out, and although I didn't (initially) regard it as highly as the previous two discs, I gradually warmed to it and gave it a spot in my musical pantheon alongside A Flock's previous albums.

So obviously, I purchased "Dream Come True" when it was released and...was stunned by just how bad it was. I mean, how could their talent have deteriorated so rapidly between albums 3 and 4? A lot of this, I think, had to do with the departure of guitarist Paul Reynolds - a very underrated player, in my opinion. At any rate, "Dream Come True" pretty much marked the end of AFOS. (Mike Score still performs - with an ever-changing lineup of musicians - as A Flock Of Seagulls, and I continue to hear rumors about a tour featuring some original members, but nothing concrete.)

Ultimately, I'm left with a question about the re-release of "Dream Come True": Why release this abomination while "Story Of A Young Heart" remains unavailable?

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece, Magnificently Performed .......2006-02-07

The solemn heavenly beauty of the Russian Orthodox Saturday evening "All-Night Vigil" liturgy resonates off the walls of the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul in this magnificent rendering of Rachmaninoff's masterpiece. In particular, the 'Bogoroditse Dyevo' (Ave Maria) is achingly beautiful. A great performance of a truly great piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars Impression.......2000-04-13

It's like the walls of a church begin to sing!

5 out of 5 stars Sacred music at its mind-blowing best.......1999-01-14

This is an utterly magnificent recording - one of my all-time favorites. I have heard other renditions, but none come close to this particular interpretation. It is sung with such passion, soul, and intelligence that I'm sure that if he could hear it, Rachmaninov himself would be moved to tears.

    5 out of 5 stars I Love it!.......2003-01-02

I love this cd for all that it is. It is a great group of musicians and a GRRRREAT singer matched with a cool production. I heard this for the first time in a bar (El Matador in New Orleans) and I flipped out. I loved it that night, bought it the next day and still love it now. I can't wait to hear more from this band and I would give a listen to ANYTHING that Lisa Kekaula sings on or anything that Tim Kerr produced. Period.

4 out of 5 stars Raw, rockin' Garage/Punk/Soul.......2002-10-08

It's beyond comprehension why some reviewers here have complained about the fidelity of this release. Fer chrissakes, it's on In The Red, it features Garage God Tim Kerr, and it's unashamedly RAW ROCK'N'ROLL, so what the hell did you expect? Emerson, Lake and Palmer?! If you want soul-less, clinical slickness to your music, then stick to your Matchbox 20 and Dave Matthews Band CDs...
Ahem, the NTD, featuring folks from the Bellrays, Lord High Fixers, Jack O'Fire, etc. are an amazing combo who rip out a highly derivitive yet intoxicating blend of tough mod-rock, '60s soul and garage crunch, all blended up with a real 21st century punk rock delivery. Half of the songs are actually covers - from Curtis Mayfield's Impressions to a rare King Floyd b-side (the awesome "Handle With Care") - the other half being some exceptional Tim Kerr originals, all combining to make a winning collection that was certainly one of my fave party discs of 2001.
If you're at all partial to the Texan garage scene (spearheaded mostly by Mr. Kerr himself), or the In The Red "sound" (raw no-BS rock'n'roll) or perhaps a sonic mix of the Who, MC5, Stones, Curtis, Sly Stone, Booker T. and Ann Peebles, then this disc will likely float yer boat.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the "stereophile" snobs.......2002-08-09

I can't believe out of all the things they could say about this album, these other reviewers choose to complain about the sound quality of the CD. Ok, sure, it's a little rough sounding, but who cares!? I listen for the music, not the technical details.

I can't begin to express how much soul this album posesses. With a mishmash of artists from other bands, I think they've created one of the most perfect bands on the planet. Soul, funk, groove, love. This album has it all, and I'm glad I heard it.

If you're only looking for crisp and clean CDs to add to your collection, you won't find it here. If you're looking for music with substance (and dang can the lead singer wail), this is for you. Beautiful.

    1 out of 5 stars Lo-Fi? How about NO-Fi..........2002-06-05

I picked this one up by chance after scanning the liner notes and noticing the songs they covered. Hey, they name drop The Small Faces, Brian Auger, Booker T. etc etc...they even cover the mod classic "Bert's Apple Crumble"...it's gotta be good, right? WRONG! The singer obviously has some talent, but the rest of it was really painful. The production is horrible, and the guitar sounds out of tune! It was PAINFUL! I actually took it back to the store and returned it within an hour of the purchase. Is this what they mean about "updating" classics with "punk energy"? To me, it's just masquerading or disguising the fact that if they tried straight up cover versions they would fall on their faces. Well they did anyway. Seriously folks, if you like any of the artists mentioned above, AVOID THIS, it's a complete pile of _ _ _ _.

3 out of 5 stars CD THAT SOUNDS LIKE A TAPE!.......2002-05-08

The music has a nice edge. Good singer. It's more Tina Turner than Detroit Cobras. Unfortunately, I also agree with other reviewers who note the clearly deficient sound quality. So much hiss on some songs that it's hard to enjoy them.

    Album Description

25 years after this show debuted on Broadway, the two original stars - Richard Kiley (Man of La Mancha) and Leslie Uggams (Hallelujah, Baby) - join a talented cast of newcomers to record the score! The album also restores the original orchestrations - long thought lost - and recreates the thrilling sound of Broadway shows in the 1960s.

Also featured are Broadway stars Priscilla Lopez (A Chorus Line), Ron Raines (Days of Our Lives) and Brenda Silas-Moore (Freeway Dreams), among others.

5 out of 5 stars Take a chance on this incredible score!.......2004-07-22

I'm glad I did, as it definitely now resides in my top ten favorite Broadway scores. It's an extremely variable score, from wildly comic to powerfully beautiful, and that may have affected the show's run, but it works great on your CD player.
Don't be afraid to change the order of the songs either. I start off with 2,3, then 1, etc. In fact, the only song I didn't end up liking on the entire CD was "Many Young Men From Now".
When I read a review by someone, I'm always curious about other shows they've liked, or didn't like, to see how similar (or dissimilar!) our tastes are. Some scores I've enjoyed include: House of Flowers, Grass Harp, Saratoga, Camelot, Purlie, Dear World, Mata Hari, The Life, Avenue Q and Wicked.
Some I didn't like include Bajour, Subways Are For Sleeping, The Seussical, St. Louie Woman, Applause, Urinetown, Greenwillow, Big River, Sweet Charity and The Golden Apple.

2 out of 5 stars Failed Broadway musical revived 25 years later........1999-06-05

This is a true oddity. HER FIRST ROMAN with book, music and lyrics by Ervin Drake is a show with some promise. The rhyming in some of the lyrics is clever, the premise of adapting Shaw's CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA to the musical stage a beguiling one. But this is amateurish from beginning to end. Not able to make up its mind whether it is drama, comedy or low comedy, it is none of these. Uggams is woefully miscast but Kiley does a wonderful job as Caesar. There are only two songs of merit - MANY YOUNG MEN FROM NOW (which should be in every gay cabaret singer's repertoire) and the rollicking I FELL IN WITH EVIL COMPANIONS. The rest range from mediocre to downright boring. Amazing that the original cast members and the producers liked it well enough to mount a cast album 25 years after the closing. Valuable to Broadway composers/lyricists in showing how NOT to write a show. This would have been ideal material for Lerner and Loewe, but sadly not for Mr. Drake.
