    Album Description

Ace's second salute to the genius of Jack Nitzsche is no less compelling than our first.

Once again the tracks have been carefully selected to give the full breadth of Nitzsche's abilities during every stage of his 40+ year career, from his earliest sessions, through to Jack's final collaborations with C.C. Adcock just months before his death.

The track listing features a copious quantity of rare material, including many previously unissued tracks that will be new to even the most avid Nitzsche collector.

The tenacity of Ace's licensing department has resulted in our being able to include many tracks that were not available at the time of the previous CD's release. Artists even queried their absence from Volume One and interceded with their record companies on our behalf.

As with "Hearing Is Believing", this CD is produced with the full co-operation and approval of Jack Nitzsche's family.

    5 out of 5 stars Genius!!!!.......2007-03-16

This guy was a studio wizard without peer----and I don't want to hear Phil Spector's name mentioned in the same breath. The scope of his work is staggering. Anybody that would put John Lee Hooker and Miles Davis together for a jam session---THAT COULD GET THOSE TWO TOGETHER FOR A JAM SESSION---and then have sense enough to just let the tape roll has got to be a genius. Don't miss this. After Jack, they broke the mold.

    5 out of 5 stars Part 2, Terrific followup.......2006-12-06

Vol 1 of this tribute to Jack Nitzsche was terrific, and this disk maintains the pace. A few of the songs are well known, but perhaps not the versions by the artist on this disk.

But they are all rock solid. Many of the tracks are the best kind of mono - punchy and full-bodied.

If you like the music of 1960-65, and are tired of hearing the same classic hits over and over again, this cd will reawaken your enthusiasm for the era.

There are some tracks from a later era, but they are not out of place. The track with Miles Davis will blow your mind. It made me think of Shaft, or a Tarantino movie.

Trumpeter Miles Davis led several sessions for Prestige Records between November 1955 and October 1956 with his legendary "first" quintet, featuring tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The sessions represent an incomparable musical legacy. Impeccably engineered by Rudy Van Gelder, the music was released on five albums that provide a unique glimpse at how five brilliant instrumentalists coalesced into one of the most extraordinary ensembles in modern jazz. Workin' presents an easygoing program that balances ballads with the blues and includes quintet performances of originals by Davis ("Four," "Half Nelson"), Coltrane ("Trane's Blues"), and Dave Brubeck ("In Your Own Sweet Way"); an interpretation of the standard "It Never Entered My Mind" without saxophone; and a piano-trio version of Ahmad Jamal's "Ahmad's Blues." Coltrane's melancholy solo on Brubeck's tune and Garland's spry excursion on Coltrane's are two of this classic's many highlights. --Mitchell Feldman

    Album Description

Miles Davis's 1956 Quintet was one of his classic groups, featuring tenor-saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Jo Jones. They recorded four albums for Prestige in two marathon sessions. Among the highlights are It Never Entered My Mind, Four, In Your Own Sweet Way and two versions of The Theme. The music is essential in one form or another. 8 tracks. From the OJC/ Prestige label.

5 out of 5 stars Trane bashers should shut up........2006-12-22

I only own Relaxin' out of the four at this point but I have one thing to say to the Trane bashers. He was searching for his sound and his solos are fine. As for the comment about Trane not fitting that's just stupid. Trane's restlessness was an excellent counterpoint to Miles' relaxed playing. If you had a cool saxaphone player with him it could have been boring even. Basically, even though Trane was on drugs, he still had a pretty good sound.

5 out of 5 stars Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet.......2006-08-12

This CD was in excellent condition--and, of course, it is a classic. It was a joy to hear.

    5 out of 5 stars WORKIN': excellent.......2005-09-25

my favorite of the four great little albums recorded by the Miles Davis Quintet in 1956. quite simply, Workin' just has the best selection of tunes with the sweet openings of "It Never Entered My Mind" to the steamrolling performance of "Trane's Blues." this is a landmark release not only of Miles' great composition and power in musical direction, but also of John Coltrane's formative years honing his creative talent. the remaining members Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones all round it out with absolutely wonderful performances. the best record from this outstanding quintet.

5 out of 5 stars Great album for those who dig straight-ahead Miles.......2005-08-16

The set of albums on Prestige, [Workin', Steamin', Relaxin', and Cookin'] has always been a favorite of mine. These albums were made in marathon sessions over a weekend so that Miles could be free to record under heavier promotion and a far more lucrative contract on Columbia Records. Albums like "Kind of Blue" and "Miles Ahead" that are traditionally thought of as the peak of Miles' art benefit from the increased budget of Columbia for recording and studio time as well as the opportunity to higher the best arrangers [like Bill Evans] or keep the best musicians together on the road for an extended period of time. The best albums on Columbia are not always known for hard-swinging [with the exception of Milestones] or conventional interpretations of hummable standards.

These Prestiges [Workin', Steamin', Relaxin', and Cookin'] are some of the hardest swinging albums in Miles' discography thanks to the tremendous rhythm section of Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, and Red Garland. Besides Miles' own fabulous playing on the ballads, the work of that rhythm section is what makes these albums so much fun to listen to. Even Miles wants to listen to them. Miles sits out on Ahmad's Blues and allows the rhythm section to play as a trio in a tribute to Ahmad Jamal, whose delicate chamber jazz and reinterpretations of standards inform the swing of this group.

I'd recommend any of the Prestige's equally as five star albums although I realize many people won't have the budget to splurge for all four and those that do may go all the way and purchase Miles' complete Prestige albums, even though some of that material is not up to the consistently high standard here.

Workin's is best thought of as "a plays the blues set". It gives a feel for what a club date might have sounded like. They record two versions of "the theme" to close out each side of the original album, just like they used the tune to close out club sets on the road. "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "It Never Entered My Mind" are buttery ballads ideal for a romantic mood or just for savoring Miles' muted trumpet. "Four" is a standard tune that Miles wrote or borrowed that's given a solid reading. "Trane's Blues" is interesting for the gospel reference to "If you do't go don't hinder me" taken from Charlie Parker's "the hymn" before the melody is repeated at the end of the song. "Half Nelson" is a solid swinger with some nice work by Philly Joe Jones. "Ahmad's Blues" depends on what you think of the rhythm section. I dig it because I like Red Garland and enjoy the spotlight on a rhythm section that can be underappreciated. Little things like Philly Joe Jones work on the hi-hat stick out more in a trio setting. Others who just listen to Miles may prefer an album like "Steamin" in the series instead.

I'm amazed by the 'Trane bashers who are reviewing this album. If you are listening to any 'Trane before "Giant Steps" you will be hearing a man who has not fully matured as an artist and you have to take the good with the bad. No, 'Trane isn't at his best here. That's part of what jazz is. The thrill is hearing him struggle with ideas and trying to find where the seeds of greatness for his later work. To trash this album because 'Trane isn't a master yet is to kind of miss the point of purchasing this album. You get it for a focused Miles [unlike some of his fusion stuff or late Columbia stuff] and an amazing rhythm section first.

Yikes, a meandering review, but I hope this helps some folks dig an album I've enjoyed for over 10 years and come back to often.

    4 out of 5 stars I like this CD.......2005-05-12

Admittedly I'm no expert at jazz and wouldn't know where to start with who plays what and all that ( forgive me ). But I do like this CD. I do like each of the sounds that each one contributes. They mesh well for that late-night easy listening on the radio. It Never Entered My Mind sounds so sweet and Trane's Blues does really sound good. It kinda feels a bit mournful in places but the overall effect is really lovely. Great to relax to when you've had a hard day and want an easy stress-free night.

4 out of 5 stars How Do You Feel About Grunting?.......2005-08-20

one of smith's more musically varied recordings for verve in the mid-60s, got my mojo workin' has him in both a quartet and octet setting. with excellent support from kenny burrell on guitar, smith plays through a number of pop and jazz numbers, giving each a fairly southern blues sound. many of the tracks are quite funky, but some are straight-up jazz vamps and others like "1-2-3" are simple easy listening pop pieces. got my mojo workin' has smith gruntin' on nearly every track, so if you find that type of thing annoying, it would be best to stay away.

hoochie coochie man puts jimmy smith in the middle of a large big band - arranged and conducted by oliver nelson. like the similar release, got my mojo workin', smith gives the blues workover to a number of jazz pieces. unlike the aforementioned though, smith seems to focus a little less on the pop spectrum and centers more on popular blues pieces - most notably "i'm your hoochie coochie man", "ain't that just like a woman" and "boom boom". what really separates the releases though is smith's top notch playing on hoochie coochie man - he really gets down.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of great music, but beware the vocals.......2005-06-20

Jimmy Smith's time with Verve was characterized by Oliver Nelson big band arrangements, in contrast with the small group settings prevalent on his Blue Note releases. Opinions about these big band arrangements vary, but since they are often present only during the first minute or two of each song, they really do not have much effect on the overall album.

What does affect these albums negatively is the presence of Jimmy Smith's voice on almost all tracks. Some songs feature outright vocals. These are definitely an acquired taste. On a few numbers, Jimmy Smith sings expressively despite a limited vocal range. On other songs, most notably an interpretation of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction," the vocals amount to little more than barks and growls. Unfortunately, the problems extend to many of the instrumental tracks since on this album Jimmy Smith appears to have developed "Oscar Peterson Disease," the highly annoying practice of humming audibly while playing the keyboard. Having seen Jimmy Smith live in one of his last shows before his death, I can attest that this humming and shouting was part of Jimmy Smith's natural repertoire; however, it is thankfully absent on most of Smith's Blue Note titles, as well on "Root Down," which remains the highlight of Smith's years at Verve.

4 out of 5 stars May "The Cat" rest in peace..........2005-05-16

Jimmy Smith's Verve output included some of my personal favorites, among them "Mojo," "Hobo Flats" (which should be released on CD some day) and "The Cat."

It was great for Verve to team "Mojo" together with "Hoochie Coochie Man," since both albums featured the no-holds barred arranging and conducting of the late, great Oliver Nelson. Jimmy showed throughout his long career that he could hold his own both with a small group (featured on one side of "Mojo") and a big band...AND, as shown largely on "Hoochie Coochie," he could sing a little too.

Now Jimmy has reunited with Oliver and that great big band in the heavens, and Wes is up there with them too. Thank heaven for the great music this Hammond B-3 master has left us with - except for Joey D, very few can hold a candle to "The Cat."

4 out of 5 stars Oliver Nelson corny? No way!.......2002-11-10

This album is from my favorite Jimmy Smith period, the collaboration with Oliver Nelson's big band. While some reviewers didn't like the band, I felt that putting Jimmy into this context was putting a firecracker in a velvet box. Oliver's arrangements are economical and punchy, and the band is tight, including many of the best horn players of the day. This album includes my favorite version of the oft-played "C-Jam Blues", with a call-response opening that does credit to Jimmy and the band, with Jimmy ripping off some Bach-like arpeggios at high speed. For those who don't care for the big band, and I see there are some, there are plenty of long stretches with just Jimmy and the trio. Grady Tate shows that he would have been the king of rock drummers if he had played only in that genre. And Kenny Burrell's spare guitar counterpoint to Jimmy is a little reminiscent of the mathematical Robbie Robertson. For those who don't care for big band anyway, I can understand not caring for this one. But I say Oliver Nelson was one of the best arrangers ever, and this was one of the tightest ensembles ever, entirely worthy of the best jazz organist ever. Now, if someone would only reissue "Monster"...

    2 out of 5 stars a mediocre CD by a jazz/funk great.......2001-05-21

However talented Jimmy Smith may be, it does not make up for the the arrangements on this album. There are a few quality songs, but most feature Smith's organ playing atop of corny big band arrangements. If one is interested in Jimmy Smith, I would recommend either The sermon or Back at the Chicken Shack over this album.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic follow up to the debut!.......2005-06-30

Brooks and Dunn followed up the fantastic "Brand New Man" cd with another outstanding work of art in "Hard Workin Man". Once again, the albulm was a big success. "She Used to Be Mine", and "That Ain't no Way to Go" both ended up topping the charts. Both of the songs allowed Dunn to do what he does best. They are fantastic, sorrowful, ballads. "We'll Burn that Bridge" and "Rock My World", both of which ended up at number 2, are fantastic honky tonk country songs. As is "Hard Workin Man", which one of my all-time favorite by Brooks and Dunn. The "Boot Scootin Boogie Remix" is fun, and "Heartbroke out of My Mind" is another very good upbeat song. "Mexican Minutes" shows off Kix Brooks very underrated voice, and "Our Time is Coming", "Texas Women", and "I Can't Put Out this Fire" round out a fantastic CD.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant second album.......2004-03-07

This album contains plenty of good-time rocking country music though there are several mid-tempo songs and ballads.

Just about any song from this album could have been a single. The five that actually were released as singles were Hard working man, That ain't no way to go, Rock my world (little country girl), We'll burn that bridge and She used to be mine. All of them were huge country hits.

Five of the songs here (Heartbroke out of my mind, She used to be mine, That ain't no way to go, Texas women don't stay lonely long, I can't put out this fire) are about women who have left their man. Aside from this common theme, they are all very different. As all the songs were original, I wonder what was going on in their lives at the time to inspire them.

The title track is about a week in the life of a hard-working man. We'll burn that bridge is about the potential of a new relationship. Mexican minutes is a light-hearted song about Americans in Mexico. Rock my world little country girl is about a woman who declines a man's offers but he still lives in hope. Our time is coming is about a struggle to maintain a relationship but it is a song of hope. The album is rounded off with a dance re-mix of Boot scooting boogie, one of the classic hits from their debut album.

Brooks and Dunn have recorded many brilliant albums but their first two albums were extra special. If you like rocking country music mixed with great ballads, you'll love this album.

    5 out of 5 stars Outdone Themselves.......2002-12-04

After such an incredible debut album, you would think that there was nowhere but down for this Country duo to head. Instead, they defy gravity and even top their first album with the release of "Hard Workin' Man". They worked hard on this release, and they come back with the same great harmonies, the great Country sound, and with a noticeable increase in their confidence.

Simply the best tune on this disc is "Mexican Minutes", a ballad of leaving the fast-paced life behind. Only these two guys could use the words "Chips and Salsa" and make it sound good. Kix Brooks gives the Messina tune fresh life. Put Ronnie Dunn's perfect Country voice into the forefront with "We'll Burn That Bridge" and the title track. His voice is full with just the right amount of twang and growl. The ballads are good on this release as well with "She Used to Be Mine" and "I Can't Put Out This Fire". Throw in a couple of upbeat tunes like "Rock My World (Little Country Girl)" and a remix of "Boot Scootin' Boogie" and you have a great Country hit.

No sophomore jinx here. These guys are on top of their game, and came through with another blockbuster album. They might be a little rockin' for Country, but they still respect their roots and create great music. This is definitely a step up from their first album and a true gem.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm a Hard Workin' Man.......2001-08-29

I love Brooks and Dunn's CD Hard Workin' Man because, I can ride, Rope, Hammer & Paint, Do things with my hand that most men can't.
I would be in a Rodeo Calf Roping and tie it's legs fast with a piggin' string in Las, Vegas at the National Finals Rodeo.
This is a good album and I'm a Hard Workin' Man?

5 out of 5 stars As good as their first.......2000-12-21

Well, Brooks and Dunn lived up to their first record and made another smash. And, to my joy, they also included a club mix of "Boot Scootin' Boogie"...six and a half minutes of fun. They both have such different voices, and as they take turns singing lead, it makes for variety. Makes a refreshing change from all the solo artists out there. Plus a good mix of ballads and up-tempo songs make it a must for fans.

5 out of 5 stars Contains Barbara's first and last albums for Atlantic in their entirety.......2007-02-17

Collectables has rounded up the first and last Atlantic albums of the smooth and soulful songstress Barbara Lewis. This two-fer offers the first straight reissues of her Atlantic albums in CD format.

Hello Stranger (1963) consists solely of Lewis' own compositions. There's lots of organ accompaniment to be found here, as well as lush background harmonies courtesy of The Dells. The gems include her debut single "My Heart Went Do Dat Da," the Shirelles' knock off "My Mamma Told Me," and the minor hit "Puppy Love," but the crown jewel of course is the sumptuous title track (top 3 pop, #1 r&b). A charming sense of innocence permeates throughout (appropriately so, as Lewis was a teenager when she wrote these songs).

Far more sophisticated and musically varied is Lewis' Workin' On A Groovy Thing (1968). Comprised primarily of her final Atlantic singles (including the chart favorites "Make Me Your Baby" and "Make Me Belong To You") plus superb remakes like the title track (a hit for Patti Drew and, later, The 5th Dimension), and Deon Jackson's "Love Makes The World Go Round," Workin' On A Groovy Thing reveals that Lewis' voice had grown significantly in confidence and style since her initial recordings.

Twelve of the twenty-four tracks found on this two-fer are also available on Rhino's definitive Hello Stranger: The Best Of Barbara Lewis. Perhaps that makes it seem less than essential to non-Lewis diehards, but everything found here is truly first-rate. Hopefully, Collectables will offer another two-fer in the near future that includes It's Magic: Lewis' excellent album of standards.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Workin' Together is an anthem for all ages........2001-07-10

Workin' Together is an album with one of the finest 'peace' anthems of the 70's. The title song is a song that is very relevant today, the sound is fresh and very well performed by the famed duo. It especially shows Tina's turn toward the rock music that would support her career for decades. This album also has the electrifying " Get Back ". Tina makes a song all her own like no other. And as far as making a song all her own Tina made history by recording " Proud Mary ". This track shines on this album, it is as hot as ever. The b-side to Proud Mary was a New York club hit "Funkier Than A Mosquita's Tweeter". This brilliantly fun track was an underground hit written by Tina's sister Ailline Bullock. There is still the raw sounds of early Ike & Tina, but the change was on it's way for the leading lady, and it shows. They end the album with a mighty plea for peace and ask us to "Let It Be". Another great turn for Ms. Turner. If you have no other Ike & Tina cd's in your collection I urge you to take full advantage of this offer and get this cd. It is by far one of the finest recordings of the duo. It mostly showcases Tina's love for all music. I can't say enough about this brilliant album. Buy it today.
