This CD presents Earl Hines's earliest recordings as a solo pianist and bandleader, from a period when he was defining the possibilities of the piano in jazz and engaging in some wonderful collaborations with Louis Armstrong. The first 12 tracks are all solo piano, and there's much of Armstrong's approach to the trumpet in Hines's playing, from the clarion single-note and octave lines of his right hand to the keen sense of architecture apparent in every solo. The pieces are marked by Hines's tremendous rhythmic energy and invention, almost every one filled with sudden shifts and turns in the pianist's bass parts that will trigger a new series of inventions in the right hand. The second version of "A Monday Date," one of Hines's most famous compositions, and "Fifty-Seven Varieties" are particularly noteworthy, with every chorus signaling a major change in direction. Hines was transforming the already traditional elements of blues and ragtime, adding ringing, bell-like high notes to "Chimes in Blues" and slyly dislodging rhythmic expectations in "Panther Rag." The band tracks feature the group that Hines led at Chicago's Grand Terrace beginning in 1928, with recording sessions from 1929 and 1932. A well-rehearsed, hard-swinging group, it was a fine foil for Hines's own brilliant piano, with other notable performances by cornetist George Mitchell and clarinetists Darnell Howard and Omer Simeon. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars A Really Great Disc of Classic Jazz Piano Music........2003-05-22

This fabulous disc features mostly piano solos by the great Earl "Fatha" Hines. Hines backed-up Billie Holiday on some tracks in the 1940s, but these cuts show his early talent. Hines superseded earlier stride pianist James P. Johnson, and also the likes of Thomas "Fats" Waller, Willie "The Lion" Smith, and F. L. "Jelly Roll" Morton. How so? Well, he took stride to the next level, while avoiding getting locked into boogie-woogie like Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons, and Meade Lux Lewis (the latter who, by the way, was also a great slow bluesman). Hines took jazz piano to the next level of evolution which started with Scott Joplin--and after Hines--continued with Oscar Peterson and Errol Garner. Really Hines was a sui generis artist like Art Tatum. Hines is the first truly modern jazz pianist: one who can stand alone, without any back-up. I highly recommend this disc, and all Fatha's work. P.S.: All the above mentioned artists can be found on the excellent Chronological Classics, and are highly recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars Imagination, Fire , Brilliance - Bracing Performances.......1999-03-22

Unless you're familiar with past performance practices, hold onto your hat. These are unlike anything you'll hear in the concert hall or on the current release roster of the major labels. Tchaikovsky and Brahms done with fire and imagination. Willem Mengelberg played the orchestra the way Horowitz played the piano. He was a virtuoso and his instrument just happened to consist of 100 men and women. He was a friend of Mahler's, leading Mahler festivals in the 1920s at which ALL the symphonies were performed. Richard Strauss dedicated "Ein Heldenleben" to Mengelberg and his recording with the New York Philharmonic (which he lead until losing out to Toscanini)is one of the greatest recordings ever made. He lead the Concertgebouw for 50 years and these recordings show him (and them) at the peak of their powers.

Mengelberg was not a literalist. The score was a guide but it was up to the conductor to fill in all the shadings and nuances that he read into the score. You'll find pregnant pauses, cymbal clashes that Tchaikovsky neglected to put in, additional lines from the brass and so on but the whole adds up, in each of these recordings to an amazing series of performances that are anything but yet another runthrough of a series of war horses. Mengelberg and his orchestra believe in this music and they have something to say.

Mengelberg uses a colorful palette to make his points. He can have slashing attacks that remind you of Toscanini or shape and mold the music with the skill of Stokowski (listen to the descending string figures near the end of the 2nd movement of the Tchaikovsky 5th, just before the clarinet's entry.) But it is the ability to blend the two approaches in a way that always keeps you in his grip (although sometimes shaking your head, wondering what's going to come next) that sets him apart. The Concertgebouw is with him every step of the way. You will have to make allowances for the background noise common to 78 rpm sources but this lets the brilliance of the recordings come through. Filtering old recordings can dull the sound quality. The transfers are pretty good, especially if you compare them to various LP editions of these performances. So forget the polish (and blandness) of your Karajan and Abbado CDs and hang on for an incredible ride.

        5 out of 5 stars A vocal genius.......2004-04-25

All I can say is, "Wow!" This is one of the greatest compilations ever showcasing Bing's underrated jazz bocal style. Bing's voice was a breathtaking instrument in these years, as these songs amply prove. I think his absolute height in range and expression was in the years 1931-1936, a period generously covered in this collection. If you're only familiar with the Crosy voice from the 40's and 50's, then you're in for a special treat. These recordings showcase Bing's more husky, jazz-influenced delivery, replete with scat singing, improvisations, banter with sidemen and absolutely dizzying vocal virtuosity.

Perhaps the most beautiful song here is "St. Louis Blues," a jazz display which Bing sings with piercing emotion. The high, sustained notes he hits here will send chills down your spine. Another gem is "I'm Hummin', I'm Whistlin', I'm Singin'," blessed with a killer vocal performance and jazz band backup. This is an outstanding collection and one which you transform a fence-sitter into a bonafide Crosby fan.

I owned this album on vinyl for years and am thrilled to see it finally offered in CD format. Enjoy it!

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An exellent 1920's pop singer.......2006-02-05

Eva Taylor was the regular singer with Clarence williams' small "Hot jazz" groups of the 20;s, however she was not just a hot blues singer, but a capable 20's pop and torch singer. She shows her ability to sing pop tunes of the day with such classic versions of Happy Days & Lonely Nights, as well as Moanin' Low. Great cd, that showcases what a great singer Taylor was.
