Album Description

Legendary Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher played the renowned Montreux Festival on five occasions, spanning his breakthrough years in the mid-seventies right up to the year before his tragic early death at the age of 47 in 1995. This CD brings together material from the shows in 1975, 1977, 1979 and 1985 to create the definitive Rory Gallagher live collection.

5 out of 5 stars Sadly missed.......2007-03-01

I agree with the others - not as enjoyable as the DVD but this is Rory on all cylinders. The abuse, by the way, was liver trouble, and he died of an infection after a transplant.

You have to buy this. Other treats that I have reviewed are Montreux DVD, Rory Live (Rockpalast) DVD, Taste Live at the Isle of Wight CD (Johnny Winter didn't even come near and I remeber everybody saying he blew Jimi "tuning problems" Hendrix off the stage (as did Procol Harum with Robin Trower). Legend has now submerged what really happened.....) and the first album, Taste CD. I will review On the Boards, Taste's second album, shortly: I have just bought it for the third time in 37 years and I am staggered at how mature and clever Rory is on this fabulous collection. What's going On? has a solo that will blister your paintwork, and his saxophone on On The Boards is a revelation. 21 he was. Buy all of these or The Great God Zorg will make you listen to Joe Satriani and Steve Vai for the next 1,000 years. You have been warned.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing dose of Rory blues .......2007-01-11

The man had all that is good and admirable about rock music. Honesty, real passion, musicianship, a true love affair for the music and the instrument, qualities that are practically lost today in a time when "Best Of 2006" lists are filled with people that no-one will remember by the time of the "Best Of 2007" lists. And this really shows all over this set of Rory's live recordings at the Montreux festival over the years. It's incredible that there is not one filler in this compilation that reminds us what a huge guitar-god Rory could be if he was a bit more "marketing oriented". A must have and not only for Rory completists.

5 out of 5 stars Great live record of his work from Montreux.......2006-11-10

Next to the Irish Tour this is my favorite Rory Gallagher. The first couple of cuts are not very well recorded with some amp noise and poor recording. Other than that it is great. I love Philby and this is a good live rendition. Very sorry he abused himself so much that he left much too early!

5 out of 5 stars All about the sound.......2006-08-03

I have the DVD of this and it is one of the greatest DVDs ever. I like the CD but the sound quality on some tracks is not what I expected. Some tracks are better than others, the stuff from '79 sounds great. I suppose Irish Tour, Stagestruck, and Live in Europe have spoiled me. It is a must have though just because its Rory.

5 out of 5 stars The Blues Have Never Been the Same.......2006-07-29

Look People, if you are looking for blues, this is the place. I have'nt even heard this yet. And I don't need to. Those who read this and have it in their heart will know what I'm talking about. Rory was a legend. He was so, because of his unique style and his dedication to his craft, and even more so for his ability to repell the temptations of the business in which he was in. Of all the music that is out there for us to listen to and enjoy and scrutinize, Rory still shines as an icon of the "roots" from which we all flourished as listeners. He played, he played extremely well and he played for us, and all that he asked in return was a smile. There are few of his fabric around today. Unless you are a dedicated follower of fasion, you will agree, that anything this man did in his life is worth more than a brief listen. So don't just listen, absorb! Absorb until it hurts.......then you'll know what I'm talking about!!!!

Steve Earle's solo performance at the 2005 Montreux Festival is a charismatic triumph. Armed with just an acoustic guitar and a harmonica, he performs tracks from across his career, with an emphasis on his later output but also going right back to songs from his breakthrough album "Copperhead Road" from 1988. The songs are performed with his characteristic combination of honesty, outspoken views and self-deprecating humor.

This reminds me of the show I saw in Newport Folk Fest in 2004 or was it 2003? Anyway, I was blown away by the Newport show and to see Steve unplugged. Only thing better than this would be to have the DVD of he and Lucinda Williams at the Folk Fest that year. This one is essential for Steve Earle fans. If you are new to Steve Earle there is a great double CD of his greatest hits out already. Otherwise pick through his many studio releases before buying this one.

    4 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-11-17

I wouldn't really call myself a Rachelle Ferrell fan but after really listening to this CD, I have to say I am now. I think she wayyy overdoes some of it but even then, her control is absolutely unbelievable. I honestly don't know many artists today or since that could match her.

My favorite track is "My Funny Valentine." Of course its been reheated many times by many talented artists. The odd thing is that Rachelle delivers a fairly tame and classy version when I expected exactly the opposite.

The best track is "I can explain." The vocal command she displays on this track are second to none. Only Patti Labelle and maybe Whitney Houston come to mind when trying to come up with comparable voices. She seems to effortlessly go from in Me'shell Ndegeocello to Minnie Ripperton on the same track without forcing it. Don't get me wrong, I know I'm makin some serious statements but I don't make them lightly. Rachelle is extremely underrated. Take a listen. I mean reallllly listen and you'll see what I mean.

    5 out of 5 stars Ferrell Live.......2006-07-10

Multi-talented Ferrell is at her pristine best on this live recording. Although her studio albums show off her diversity, none of them capture her true, six-octave vocal range like "Live at Montreux". This is one of only a few live recordings where the listener actually feels present at the show(s). A must own for all jazz enthusiasts.

    4 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-11-10

I can not describe the great ability this woman has to transform her voice into an instrument. She has one of the most amamzing voices I have heard in my life.

I purchased this cd, after hearing a little of her first cd, which I also loved, but while on a date a friend of mine played
"I Can Explain" off of the cd and it almost brought tears to my eyes and after purchasing the cd, I can not seem to stop playing it. I instantly ran to find out when I could see her in concert and to my surprise she is going to be in the DC area today. Sadly enough, I won't be in attendance but I can only imagine the showcase of talent she will display at the show.

This cd is def. a must for any Rachelle fan.

4 out of 5 stars Rachelle does it again........2005-08-23

I can not step away from this album. It is a must have for anyone who appreciates a great voice.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME, BY ANY STANDARD.......2005-04-20

If you like the human voice and all it can achieve, you cannot but stand in awe after listening to this record, which shows what this woman can do with that instrument that is her voice. WOW !!! In this recording of a 1991 live concert at Montreux Jazz Festival, to which she was invited as some sort of back voice to artists of great and well deserved fame (Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan and others), she must have certainly stolen the show after her demonstration of vocal prowess & ability.
It is not only that she could really convey all the sentiment that the lyrics intended to... it will be the sheer power of her voice what will blow your senses off. Though sometimes her interpretations might resemble the effect of vocal fireworks, she does not overshadow either the spirit or the melody of the song being sung, which is a fortunate achievement, to say the least.
While nearly all of the songs in that CD are real treasures, in my opinion, the highlights of the whole CD are three songs, tracks 5 ("My Funny Valentine"), track 6 ("I Can Explain") & track 7 ("I'm Special")... and you may add "Me voila seul", a song written by Charles Aznavour which she sang as beautifully as it may get.

I'll bet you will feel all the electricity, all the exhilaration that such crowd felt back then, when she finished singing "I Can Explain", a dark, deep, extraordinarily heartfelt song of her own, which she not just only sang beautifully but also playfully where most singers simply would have given up, after reaching the highest note possible...

Hats off to her & her god-given talent !!!!... I simply wish I had been there then... ;-)

    Album Description

Southpaw guitarist Otis Rush made his debut in 1956 with a cover of Willie Dixon's "I Can't Quit You Baby", charting his first Top Ten R&B hit. Over the course of his 50-year career, Rush has established himself as one of the premiere bluesmen on the Chicago circuit.

Often credited with being one of the architects of the West side guitar style, Rush's esteemed status as a prime Chicago innovator is eternally assured by his trademark sound. Blues fans have said that his combination of ringing, vibrato-enhanced guitar work with an intense vocal delivery is powerful enough to force the hair on the backs of their necks upwards in silent salute.

Otis Rush Live At Montreux 1986 features the Chicago blues legend at his spine-tingling best. For his first appearance at the Montreux Festival, Rush is joined on stage by fellow blues stars Eric Clapton and Luther Allison for a truly special show. The CD features nearly an hour-and-a-half of performances of Rush classics, including "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", "Double Trouble" and many more.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Otis Rush - Live at Montreux 1986, my review from Barcelona.......2007-06-24

Otis Rush is one of the best Bluesman of all times. He is a great singer, guitarist and composer, on the same level as the late Magic Sam and the current leader of the Chicago Blues, Buddy Guy, all of them creators of the sound known as West Side. I find this live record a jewel with only one defect, which is its sound. The bass guitar practically is nonexistent, particularly in some themes as for example the one that opens the LP, "Tops", or the one that closes the record, the brilliant Memphis Slim's "Every day I have the Blues". Nonetheless it is an extraordinary record, one of the best live records I have heard. Otis' way of playing and singing is absolutely superb and all the musicians do a great job, with powerful contributions by an inspired Eric Clapton, aka Slow Hand, in four themes, in the last of which coinciding with another top figure as Luther Allison, a great admirer of Otis Rush. The record contains several extraordinary original themes as well as versions. I want to highlight the intensity of the version of the classic Albert King's "Croscut Saw", and one of his great compositions, "All your love (I miss loving)". I'm also partial to "Double trouble", a great Blues with that Otis' feeling, and the blues which closes the record, Memphis Slim's "Every day I have the Blues", with Clapton, Allison and Rush showing their mastery, even though towards the end of the theme the sound loses some clarity. Highly recommended for all the blues and guitar lovers. I give it 5 stars in spite of this somewhat flawed sound and long live to Otis Rush.

4 out of 5 stars If it OnlySounded Better.......2007-05-08

I was blown away and at the same time disappointed in this cd. The music and performances are stellar. This is superb blues, my foot never stopped tapping. The problem is and I agree with the reviewer Somebody, the sound is not excellent by any means. I have an expensive stereo sytem and it reveals the recording as very sub par. Bass lacks and the guitars are not all that clear. Albert King and SRV In Session is a notable example of a great recording. If this cd sounded as good it would be tough to beat.

4 out of 5 stars RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "A 20 YEAR OLD TREASURE NOT AS VALUABLE AS A 30 YEAR OLD TREASURE".......2007-01-21

This is a "new" release, 20 years after the actual performance. I suppose one of life's unknown questions, along with what went on in Area 51, is why is Otis Rush's "Live At the Wise Fools Pub" (See Shaq's previous review!) recorded 30 years ago, louder and clearer than this one! Oh well! Back to the musical review. Part of my reason for rating this a 4 star as compared to "Wise Fools Pub" 5 rating, is due to the clarity and sound volume. Other than that, this is still worth purchasing. Starting with the 6th song Eric Clapton, joins Otis on stage, and that was probably the last time; Clapton ever did anything positive in the electric blues arena. His guitar playing does pick things up a bit. To me, the pinnacle, of the CD, emotionally, as well as physically, is on the last song #9, when Luther Allison, comes on stage, and gives a speech to the audience, stating (What Shaq already knew.) for the record, that Otis Rush was his idol! The fact that, that declaration of thanks and admiration, was recorded for posterity, to me was a singular point in time, emotionally. How many times in everyone's life, does just praise, come when it's too late? When the person deserving the recognition is gone! I'm happy, for Otis, and Luther, that it was stated for the record, with witnesses, for time, in- memoriam!

    4 out of 5 stars Great Live.......2007-01-03

This is the Otis Rush CD to get. It has great songs, and captures him live very well. The guests actually play with Otis and don't just hang out and have fun. He has a great version of Crosscut Saw. If you don't have any Otis, or much live blues this is a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars As brilliant as Rush and Clapton are, it's Allison in the end.......2006-05-25

that takes this record to places it never would have reached otherwise. Otis Rush is a major force compositionally and stylistically in contemporary electric blues, and he has the voice of genuine authority when he sings. What you get on the first five cuts are a sampling of just how strong those talents are. When Clapton comes on to join him, Rush pulls out of Clapton some of the very best work Eric has committed to recording ever. For my ears, it would be until THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE and the Robert Johnson discs that Clapton would be this incendiary again. And that's odd about Clapton: on his own, he is not his best advocate. Put him in a context like this, where he is working within the blues, and he is a very different beast altogether. Clapton tears up his counterattacks to Rush and they clearly are intensely focused on wringing everything out of each song.
That alone would be enough for any record to aspire to, but wait. Luther Allison arrives for the closer, at first without a guitar, and whips not just the audience, but Rush and Clapton into a frenzy. Strapping on his Strat, Allison takes this recording to heights clearly unaniticipated by everyone else in the room. It is a performance for the ages. But Luther was always like that. For my money, there was and remains no finer or more exciting guitarist in any discipline of music. So, as stunning as the first 8 tracks are, number 9 blows them all away.

And the best part is, the DVD is even better!

    5 out of 5 stars The Gang's all here..........2007-03-13

When Casino Lights came out in '82 I was 18 years old. I'd already been a fan of Sanborn, the Yellow Jackets Randy Crawford, Marcus Miller, Larry Carlton and a big fan of Al Jarreau's for 6 years. So when they got together for this baby, I was blown away and still is. Hats off to Claud Nobs for putting this together with Warner Bros finest talent at that time. I highly recommend this album. I'm 43 now and Casino Lights is still by far, my favorite "live recorded" album.

    5 out of 5 stars Mike Mainieri - vibes!.......2004-07-04

Love this album, but the highlight for me on this album is Mainieri's solo on "Theme from "Love is not enough"". This is worth the price alone! And of course Sanborn's playing is, as always, superb.

    5 out of 5 stars Blown Away.......2000-07-11

I cannot find the words to express how much I enjoy this recording. The technical ability of the artists is amazing and being a musician myself, I can certainly appreciate how demanding some of the tracks are! With two of the worlds best vocalists in Al Jarreau and Randy Crawford, this album will appeal to soul music fans as well as jazz maniacs. The highlight for me is the Yellowjackets 'Monmouth College Fight Song' which I have covered for many years in my own band and finally I own my own copy - Priceless!

5 out of 5 stars Mostly Smooth, NEVER Dull.......2000-07-06

This is a WONDERFUL album. Al Jarreau and Randy Crawford really click as a duet pair on the three songs they sing together. Yellowjackets serve as a top notch backing band for most of the pieces on the album, and the tune they headline, Monmouth College Fight Song, is great loads of fun. Throughout the album, the musisians are really together and feeding off one another in the fine tradition of great jazz. The killer song here, tho, is Randy Crawford's cover of John Lennon's "Imagine". Probably the finest rendition of this song every recorded, it'll raise the hairs on your neck and land on you with every bit of emotion and feeling for humankind that Lennon put into that piece. "Casino Lights" is easily one of the best recordings in our music collection.

      Album Description

George Clinton and Parliament / Funkadelic bring the party to the Montreux Jazz Festival in this 2004 appearance. This performance is an audio assault on the senses, as Clinton and company fuse together R&B, Funk, and Soul music. An overcrowded stage of singers, dancers and musicians give a high-energy performance, proving that George Clinton & Parliament / Funkadelic are as viable today as they were 30 years ago. George Clinton & Parliament / Funkadelic have received a number of honors over their career. They are 1997 Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Inductees. They have earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from the NAACP's Image Awards. And in 2002, Spin Magazine ranked them #6 on their 50 Greatest Bands of All Time list.

5 out of 5 stars Blues at Sunrise: Live at Montreux.......2006-02-26

This is a very well done live recording. Both the material and the sound quality are top notch. The only thing I found missing was some additional material from the festival not on this CD. For that one must get the "Blues at Sunset" CD that contains the rest of the set as well as more excellent recordings from the Wattstax concert.

5 out of 5 stars Albert is god!.......2005-11-27

We must praise albert king for this masterpiece! His guitar is very powerful and wild in this live performance!!!!!! Blues at Sunrise is between his best works!!!!!

      5 out of 5 stars simply stunnig.......2005-10-17

what you're holding in your hand is one of the very best live blues album ever. I own quite a few albert's album but this one has always found a special place in my heart. Both the setlist and the performances are wonderful and it has my favourite version of i'll play the blues for you. After he says "exscuse me" he unveils a terrific solo that gets you realize what blues power is all about, the interplays with the horns section is stunning and the voice, man, the voice...if you gotta get just one album by this master get this one, you wont be disappointed

5 out of 5 stars Albert King's Once Lost Concert!.......2005-06-29

This concert was released after the return of Stax Records in the 1980s as a part of Fantasy Records. The initial release was the lost tape of Albert recording with John Mayall and his Jazz-Fusion band in California. This was put out as the "Lost Session". After another look in the newly recovered Stax vault (no pun intended!)tapes this concert was found. Two tracks had been previously released on vinyl as "Live at Montreux". This CD has most of the remaining part of this July 1, 1973 Montreux concert. The balance of this set can be found on the follow up release "Blues At Sunset" (1993).

This set is really different. Albert has a great band (with a subdued horn section). He also has Donald Kinsey (of the Kinsey Report) on guitar, who like Jimmy King, he calls his "grandson" (he liked to do that). Albert's playing is heavy, full and forceful. He obviously plays the entire set on his neck pickup and produced a fat sound unlike that on any other King recording. This is very similar to the sound he gets on the 2004 DVD release "Albert King: Live in Sweden". The title track "Blues at Sunrise" is a reworking of one of his very first King Records recordings. He has done this tune many times but this version is really different sounding. It also shows King at the beginning of the 1970s until the 1990s when he got the reputation of being difficult to work with. He typically berates the sound man in the middle of the tune.

I saw him in Australia in 1990 and he stopped the concert in the middle of "Kansas City", only his second tune, and rearranged the speakers on stage while the audience waited twenty minutes. He continued to play until he felt the Bass player wasn't holding up his end and PULLED OUT HIS LEAD IN MID-SONG! Oh Albert!

The tunes are on this recording are great, as they always are at Montreux. The production is well done and edited. Highlights of the performance are the Ray Charles (RIP) tune "I Believe To My Soul". His solos in this tune are awesome, what phrasing! "Roadhouse Blues" is a great extended tune that really gives the feel of an Albert King concert. This tune was released as a self-titled cassette tape in the 1990s, now very rare. "Little Brother, Make A Way" is the most unique cut on this CD. It features the only other and only ever live version of this track from "I'll Play the Blues For You" which was his current LP available when this concert was recorded. It has Albert singing soulfully without the second voice track of the LP and doing a great guitar solo as well.

I would highly recommend this CD. It is different sounding than any other Albert King recording. This shows Albert at the height of his creative devlopment and influence on the Blues genre. Buy this one along with Live Wire, Blues Power", "Blues At Sunset", "Blues From The Road", "Live 69" and "Talking Blues". These CDs are all different and show Albert's style and tone at various stages of his long career.

4 out of 5 stars (Another) good live album.......2004-04-03

This solid live album finds King in fine form, fronting a good band, and playing a number of his best songs.
His vocals are strong and soulful, and his muscular single string leads and fills are all over..."Don't Burn Down The Bridge", "I'll Play The Blues For You", and Ray Charles' "I Believe To My Soul" are particularly good, but the entire album is worth a listen.
It's not an absolutely necessary addition to anyone's Albert King-collection, but it's an enjoyable purchase for fans of the late guitarist.

Produced with loving care by Claude Nobs, founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival, with no edits or overdubs, this document of Miles Davis's Montreux performances shows through never-before-released material how Miles and company transformed his music live, with their fire, invention, and interplay. The list of sidemen on these dates is a who's who of today's superstars, including saxophonist Dave Liebman, guitarists John Scofield and Robben Ford, keyboardists Adam Holzman and Kei Akagi, bassist Michael Henderson, and percussionist Mtume. Most of the music on these discs features versions of Davis's fusion "hits." The funky and R&B-ish ditty "Ife" and the bouncy "Calypso Frelimo" are rendered with more gusto than their studio versions, as are the in-the-pocket, mid-'80s tunes "Star People" and "New Blues." A package this big has more than a few surprises, however. Chaka Khan lends her powerful pipes to Davis's unique cover of the Michael Jackson sleeper, "Human Nature," and "Al Jarreau" is an upbeat (though too short) tribute to the great vocalise master.

Other new offerings include "Lake Geneva," "Pacific Express," and the intense "Maze." This important set has two memorable milestones. There's the previously released 1991 Quincy Jones-led concert with the 50-piece, George Gruntz/Gil Evans Orchestra, where Davis recreates his historic Gil Evans-orchestrated charts of "The Birth of the Cool," "Porgy and Bess," "Miles Ahead," and "Sketches of Spain." Davis's disciple Wallace Roney backs up Davis on the complex melodic lines, and alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett soars with his clean, Sonny Stitt-like solos. Garrett is also onstage with Davis on a sextet date at Nice, France, on July 17, 1991, released here for the first time, that features material from the poppish Scritti Politti tune "Perfect Way" to the Cyndi Lauper ballad "Time After Time." Whether Davis's trumpet is open, muted, or electrified, his playing, as this collection shows, is honest and enduring, regardless of the material. --Eugene Holley Jr.

1 out of 5 stars **This review pertains to the format and NOT the music**.......2007-02-08

It is not easy for me to give Miles Dewey Davis anything less than five stars. The music speaks for itself, it is an astonishing document of live electric miles and every note played is here. 5 Stars to the music and a million to the man.
However, this boxset seems like it was assembled by bootleggers. All the bindings on the one I recently received, that means the cd books and the hard cover liner notes, came undone the second I opened them. They are far too stiff and assembled very poorly. And the box itself is very thin and flimsy, the outer graphics are so badly applied and missaligned that they showed shelfwear before I took off the shrink-wrap! The edges of the graphics on the top and bottom seem to be dog-eared before I even opened it.
Having said that, I would buy it again. This is the only definitive complete release of these shows and the sound quality is pristine. There has been no tinkering applied, we hear today what the crowd heard then.
I love you Miles, thanx for the awesome legacy.

5 out of 5 stars the final/fantastic years of miles career.......2004-10-17

Most of the other reviewers have already lucidly described the value of this box. Even if Miles 80s albums did not "do much for you", you should check this set out. These live recordings contain ample evidence that Miles could still improvise, select brilliant musicians for his bands, and create vital live music. The price for this set may seem high, but you're getting twenty discs of incredible music, and many Amazon partners sell it at a lower price. If you're hesitant to take the plunge on this box, try Miles' single disc "Live Around The World". If you enjoy that, you can't be without this set. Highest of recommendations.

5 out of 5 stars Tight, Adventurous, and RIPPING!.......2003-03-26

Do yourself a favor and check out the Miles Ahead online discography entry for this release ... most of these tracks click in at over nine, 10, 13, even 16-plus minutes.

THESE BANDS WERE TEARING IT UP! The studio albums from this era are easy listening compared to these ripping-funk/fusion-fests!

The list of superstar band members is monstrous ... John Scofield, Bob Berg, Daryl Jones (on discs 3-10) ... Kenny Garret, Benny Rietveld ... DAMN!

The recording quality is brilliant throughout, and although many song titles repeat several times (even from afternoon to evening concerts on the same date) each performance is a unique adventure all its own.

Live Around the World pales in comparison (other than the smoking Kenny Garret solo on Human Nature). The Heavy Metal Prelude/Heavy Metal medley from 1988 (with Foley on lead bass) is so loud and jarring that it is just scary!

If you can afford it, you must own this.

      5 out of 5 stars MILES BEYOND..........2002-12-21

This box set is truly a Tour-de-Force. I would also call it a landmark of great musical and historical value. With twenty CD's there is a lot to get through here. Each concert seems to have something that makes it unique. Whether it is a special guest playing with Miles such as David Sanborn, George Duke or Chaka Khan, or just a change in the line up of his band, there is much that makes each performance unique. Claude Nobs has done a great thing by releasing these recordings so that others may hear and enjoy these strong performances given by one of the greatest of Jazz greats. Forever Miles....

5 out of 5 stars Miles in Montreux: underrated bands and outstanding trumpet!.......2002-10-30

(1973) What strikes me is how focused this performance is: you get the unique electronic textures characteristic of Davis' post-ON THE CORNER `70s music, but also a parade of solos (Davis, Dave Liebman, Pete Cosey, and James Mtume) that further overturn the already-inaccurate cliche that this period deemphasized individual expression in favor of a collective approach. After an aggressive first set (which provokes boos from the audience), Davis wins the crowd over with a more subtle second set. Miles' playing is probably the strongest I've heard him in the 1973-75 period (I also noticed that he seems to use the wah-wah pedal a bit more sparingly than usual, to good effect). IMO, this performance is so much better in all respects--including sound quality--than DARK MAGUS and IN CONCERT that there's no comparison. I'd place this with AGHARTA/PANGAEA as the best officially-released documents of this group in a live setting.

(1984 - 1986) A lot happened with Miles in the interim, but by 1984 Davis' trumpet-playing was back in prime shape. Furthermore, he had assembled a fine ensemble that has backed off from the previous decade's cutting edge, offering fiery, inspired playing in a somewhat more conventional yet still bold context, including always provocative solos by Davis and John Scofield. Additionally, the tunes performed show considerable variety, from aggressive funk/jazz to more subtle gems like PACIFIC EXPRESS. In 1985 he performs the YOU'RE UNDER ARREST album with a sense of daring and passion missing from that disc. The 1986 concert is a good set, but the bar is raised so high by the 1984-85 performances that it seems a bit less interesting in comparison. Davis' playing on both 1984 and the second 1985 set is remarkably strong. I hear talk of 1980s-era Davis being past his prime blah blah blah, but I don't recall any other musician in any genre playing with this consistent level of strength, invention, endurance, and relevance at Davis' age (late 50s at the time of these concerts).

(1988-1990) The core group lineup for Davis' final ensemble is set (Kenny Garrett, Ricky Wellman, Foley). With the extraordinary percussionist Marilyn Mazur on board, and the keyboardists Robert Irving III and Adam Holzman at their peak in giving the music rich, unique textures, 1988 is the best of the three concerts (very similar to the recent LIVE IN MUNICH DVD). 1989 does have some AMANDLA cuts added into the setlist, but for once the group doesn't seem to have much to add to the studio versions, except for HANNIBAL. In fact, there seems to be a bit of predictability setting in that fortunately is compensated by continued fine soloing by Davis (albeit not in the forefront on every tune as before), Garrett (or Rick Margitza in 1989), and Foley. To be fair, even these concerts push the envelope further than most of Miles' peers--if this is Davis' version of "smooth jazz" thankfully it has way too many rough edges (who else had a group nearly this distinctive and flexible?). Possibly the relative lack of fresh, challenging material is the culprit in keeping the 1989-90 dates from realizing their fullest potential (and the prime reason that they fall short of other Davis eras).

(1991) The performance with Quincy Jones of the Miles & Gil classics has already been issued: Davis plays well considering he hadn't touched this material in three decades. Although fresh accounts in the SO WHAT bio indicate Davis' health was declining, he nonetheless was sounding revitalized, particularly in the Summer 1991 concerts with his regular working group. I've already heard an outstanding performance from Hamburg, and the one issued here from Nice is just as invigorating. The occasional crowd-pleasing tactics of the prior two years is absent (e.g., the simply-there tunes, his call-and-response toying with the audience, etc.). Here Davis and his group just focuses on playing some dynamic music, and in the process even such well-worn material as HUMAN NATURE and TIME AFTER TIME are given new life. Sometimes one group member can make a difference: in 1988 it was Mazur, and in 1991 the presence of keyboardist Deron Johnson helps to push an already a fine group over the top. After hearing this concert Davis' death seems even more tragic: I hear tons of potential that sadly was prevented from being pursued when he passed shortly afterward.

The importance of the boxed set in understanding Davis' last decade cannot be overstated. Furthermore, Davis really seemed to be inspired by playing at Montreux: without exception his own playing is in top form, relative to other concerts performed surrounding these dates that I've heard. Certainly Davis didn't perform at this high level every time he walked on stage (I saw Davis in concert ten times between 1981-90 and his playing only reached these heights maybe 3-4 times), but that fact makes this box even more essential. I hesitate to recommend any 20-CD boxed set to non-collectors. Yet if you've been exposed to 1980s-vintage Miles (via records or concerts) and like what you've heard, I can't imagine you being disappointed with the music heard here. If you don't have the money to pay and/or the time to listen, the best alternatives are the DVDs LIVE IN MONTREAL (1985) and LIVE IN MUNICH (1988).
