Jimi Hendrix's second album doesn't resonate through rock history the way its gatecrashing predecessor, Are You Experienced?, does. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's a vital album, containing some of rock's molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of "Castles Made of Sand," the viciously funky "Little Miss Lover," and the so-beautiful-it-hurts "Little Wing." Hendrix really hits altitude with "If 6 Was 9," where he waves his "freak flag high" over a tidal wave of guitar and a cacophonous army of Moroccan flutes, and he ends with "Bold As Love," based around Hendrix's typically far-fetched hankering for the axis of the planet to be tilted, thereby transforming life on earth. It works up into a head-melting frenzy of distorted guitar, a precursor to the staggeringly expansive leap forward he would take with 1968's Electric Ladyland. Shut Up and Put Yer Headphones On.......2007-06-04

I first heard this when it was first released on vinyl in 1967 and it was at a friend's apt. We were all musicians and we took turns listening to the opening with headphones. Today we have 5.1/7.1 surround etc; it's impossible to overstate what the creative use/mix of the stereo field did. To hear instruments sounding like voices swirling to fro left to right with Jimi's voice coming out of the top of your head was a mind altering Experience;pun intended. So let the Experience of this second effort take over and run through you through some great headphones and while defocusing use the album art as the Mandela, even with the mistakes and warts, it was intended to be. That was 40 years ago and it's as stunning a work today as it was then and it'll light your chakras up like a pinball.

The Earth Turned On His Axes.......2007-05-27

Like Terry Gilliam, Hendrix at his worst was still better than everybody else at their best. Astoundingly, Hendrix secured his place high at the top of the rock guitar pantheon on the strength of just three albums, recorded in rapid succession. Axis: Bold As Love, is the middle child, or perhaps, the redheaded stepchild. It can't touch Are You Experienced? or Electric Ladyland - but it's still pretty darn hot.

Rushed out under battle conditions, Axis shows some ragged edges. The revolting cover, stupid even by standards of the day, was the result of a mix-up. Hendrix wanted the cover art to reflect his American Indian ancestry - the record company folks in England heard Indian and, (like Columbus in reverse) thought Indian Indian. Indian religion was all the fashion then, so it seemed like a natural. All this, however, does not explain away the unadulterated ugliness.

More harrowing still is the cab ride story. In the middle of recording the album, Hendrix took the masters with him to play at a party he was attending, forgetting them in a cab. (One must wonder if his absent-mindedness was natural or enhanced.) Realizing what had happened, Chas Chandler had to remix half the album in 11 hours - astonishing considering the amount of studio wizardry featured.

The writing is off throughout, lyrics were never Jimi's strongest suit, here it shows. Even the wonderful Castles Made Of Sand has writing that would have been flagged in a high school poetry class. The kicker of the litter is You Got Me Floatin' - soaring guitar and driving beat. The one perfect song, often overlooked, is One Rainy Wish, which evokes a very particular atmosphere and then morphs into something amazing, all in the space of 3:40. Little Wing is a perennial, lovely, and one of the rare Hendrix songs often covered. If 6 Was 9, and Bold As Love, showcase Hendrix in fine form. Both are anthems of the day, and both seem to keep switching gears, every time you think they couldn't be any more thrilling, they kick up another level.

Hendrix adapted and changed at lightning speed, a lifetime of evolution compressed into a few years. Axis is a flawed album, but as the necessary bridge between two near-perfect extremes, it is fascinating and satisfying.

Kowabunga!!.......2007-05-08

When I first heard snatches of "Are You Experienced", Hendrix' first album on Philly's premier, local, underground FM rock station of the time, I couldn't believe that here was a black, American expatriate, living in England, producing what had to be ARCHE-typical California psychedelic hard rock/funk like no other person before or after him! There was a confidence in Hendrix' singing/songwriting and guitar playing that NO ONE has equaled...white, black, hispanic or otherwise, since! Though he played sideman to people like Little Richard and James Brown, he was a better musician than ten of those two put together, though their influence on him was obvious. Here was a man who took three idioms: soul/R&B, rock and psychedelia, and melded them together in a unique consumme that no one has been able to duplicate, though Cream and Arthur Lee's Love came closer than most.

"Axis" is a little more introspective than "AYE"...it's like Jimi was telling us: "Here I am, at least now...whaddya think?" You hear his feelings about relationships in songs like "Little Miss Lover", "Little Wing", "Wait Until Tomorrow" and "You Got Me Floatin'". You hear his contemplations on spirituality and sci-fi in "EXP", "Bold As Love" and "Spanish Castle Magic" and social musings in "If 6 Was 9".

His arrangements were original, forceful, cocky and catchy. There was nobody else like Jimi Hendrix...anywhere! And it's a shame we lost him so soon after he hit it big...in fact, like so many OTHER rockers from the Woodstock era, becoming a legend by the time his second album, this one, had come out!

In one year's span of time, we lost Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Mama Cass Elliott and Janis Joplin...! Now Joplin, as far as I'M concerned, was no great loss, though by no means am I glad she's dead, but Hendrix and Morrison were truly stellar talents that made the world of art and music poorer with their passing. There were TONS more talented female rock singers than Joplin out there and she was the first to admit it, (Mama Cass being one of them!) But Hendrix, perhaps the greatest black crossover artist ever, and Morrison...the musical reincarnation of William Blake himself, THEY left a gaping hole where some truly great music had been!

Maybe if somebody can perfect cloning before their DNA rots TOO thoroughly....

TIME DOES NOT GO BY... Neither in the SPANISH CASTLES MAGIC (nor these all time rock classic album).......2007-03-24

Do you still think any other musicians improved Jimi Hendrix's guitar feeling and technique??. Maybe you can name a few owning excellent skills and probably unforgettable trademark effects in their playing. But JIMI's music is not only fireworks. I strongly recommend you to listen to this remastered album, which by the way. was recorded IN THE LATE SIXTIES!!!. Then you realize why he is still the best rock guitarrist...and composer and singer and performer, but above all guitar hero. Hey!, please do not forget that unfortunately JIMI HENDRIX only recorded three official albums "Electric Layland", "Are You Experienced?" and this "Axis:Bold As Love". The rest of his discography are good profitable businesses for the heirs of its excellent legacy (of course with some exceptions in form of a pair of testimonial live recordings). Also, the best point on this re-issue is the respect (and improvement) on all the original texts and graphics from the original albums. Needless to say that the audio remastering is a plus.

Very Good But Could Have Been Great.......2005-05-18

I really liked this album, I never knew that Tom Morello could sing. I wish you could hear Maynard on the U2 cover or the duet he did with Cornell but they are still good covers. This is worth buying as long as you do not expect a meavy metal album. The theme is peace and that is hard to expresse when playing heavy metal.

i preordered this cd not knowing exactly what to expect with serj, morello, maynard, cornell, etc. teaming up so i just put faith into serj and what i got was some good, easy listening music for a sensible cause. i wish maynard could have flaunted his vocals more but his duet with cornell is great. the DVD is pretty packed with video/audio interviews which is really nice so you can watch what you hear on the cd and it has some added songs too. the songs will grow on you if you don't like them at first as they can be pretty catchy. overall, i'm pretty happy with it.

This is a fantastic album. Sure the artists involved may deviate a little from their typical genres, but it's certainly a refreshing change, and one that shows off the versatility of all the artists. One gripe: Maynard, step up to the plate and sing a little more. Other than that, it's awesome. Great music, great message

Listen to it with an open mind.......2005-03-04

When I discovered that there was a collaboration between the likes of Maynard James Keenan, Serj Tankian, and Flea I was all over it, and quickly ordered it from Amazon. Most of the reviews said it wasn't good at all, but none really said why. I now realize that many of the people who dislike this must have been expecting System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers all rolled into one, which is not really what this is at all.

This is more of a chance for these artists to try something new. Serj and Tom Morello especially show off new sides to their music. Tom gives us offerings as The Nightwatchman, under which he performs folk music. While his singing initially caught me off guard, I ended up liking it and the lyrics are great, too. Serj gets a chance to show his ability on the piano, which was barely even explored in SoaD. It'd be interesting to hear some of their songs redone on piano.

While the focus is on Serj and Tom(after all, they organized the show and founded the Axis of Justice, the organization), the backing band is great, too. In addition to Tom on guitar and Serj on piano/vocals, they include the aforementioned Flea on bass, Pete Yorn on guitar/vocals, and Brad Wilk on drums. Most of the songs they play are cover songs, but there are a few cool jams, which should please fans of Rage or the Chilis. The rest of the band also backs up one of Tom's solo songs. Chris Cornell and Maynard James Keenan perform an excellent duet on "Peace, Love, and Understanding", which wasn't recorded at the same concert and is closer to the Elvis Costello original than the recent version found on A Perfect Circle's eMOTIVe. The addition of Jurassic 5's hip hop is odd, but they're one of the few respectable groups in that genre and add some more variety to the concert. Knowledge(a spoken word artist I hadn't heard of before) contributes a couple interesting poems, too, including one that's backed by Serj's piano.

There isn't very much wrong with this album. I do think it would've been nice if Maynard had been the lead singer for the house band. Maynard has shown that he can do a good job at singing other people's songs with both Tool and A Perfect Circle, but his only appearance at the concert was the backing vocals on "Where the Streets Have No Name". With both Serj and Pete Yorn singing on that song as well, Maynard's voice merely blended in. Serj's voice works great for his music, but when covering artists like U2, it sounds out of place. I guess one other problem with this CD is that the stuff isn't necessarily going to appeal to fans of the artists on it, which makes it hard for this to find an audience. I also heard very little in the way of promotion for this disc, so I don't think too many people know of it.

The DVD's video quality isn't great, but it has some material that's not on the CD, and it's nice to see most of the songs instead of just hearing them. It also didn't raise the price of the CD, so it's hard to complain about it. I think the conversations between Serj and Tom could have been much better, though. Instead of showing a video, it shows still shots, but for some reason the pictures shake. Surely there was an actual video of these conversations and not just pictures. They also get cut off several times while they're talking, and it has generic backgrond music playing the whole time. Though, it is nice to hear their views on President Bush, censorship, and the war in Iraq. I also would've preferred they didn't include Michael Moore in their talks. All in all, it's a decent, if rather flawed, addition to an otherwise good DVD.

I'd recommend this to people looking for a unique and varied sound. Just don't expect it to be your favorite bands combining their styles. As long as you listen to it without those expectations, you should find it very enjoyable.

Why Do I Not Want to Listen?.......2005-02-11

I adore the artists on this CD. We share similar views, but apparently not tastes. Try as I might, I can't get into this cd. I want my CDs to grab me and pull me in, make me want to listen over and over again, but there's no such pull to this CD. The DVD is entertaining, but far from great. The camera work is just awful. Concert DVDs should bring you closer to the show, make you feel like you are there, but this one pushes you away. Good to buy to support the artists and causes behind the set; not so good for a CD you can listen to ritualistically.

Lots of "gems" for the Gentry fan.......2005-07-28

This British compilation contains several songs unavailable on any other Bobbie Gentry CD and is well worth the price tag. Some songs can be found on other collections (such as "Ode to Billie Jo" and "Mississippi Delta") but where this collection shines is with the hard-to-find recordings such as "Greyhound Goin' Nowhere", "Natural to Be Gone, and "Seasons Come, Seasons Go."

"Natural to Be Gone" is a John Hartford song that has only been recorded by a few artists, and is, in my opinion, one of his best songs. Glen Campbell used to close his tv show with this number- I don't know why it wasn't a hit. I prefer it to the more well-known "Gentle on My Mind" (also on this CD). Bobbie Gentry adds some new verses & lyrics not found on any Hartford recordings-- I'm not sure if he wrote them or she did, but they add a unique touch and depth to the original Hartford recordings. The duet version of "Gentle on My Mind" also contains a verse not usually found on other recordings.

Some of the recordings are over-produced and the orchestration almost drowns out Gentry's and Campbell's voices on some of the songs, but this is a great way to hear some unique gems. I've been a fan of hers since 1967 and while this CD isn't quite worth 5 stars(I'll save that for the album "Patchwork"-- the songs show up on her CD, "Bobbie Gentry: An American Quilt" ), it's got some great moments.

A must-have for a Gentry fan.

The forgotten Hendrix album.......2004-12-18

Axis: Bold As Love (1968.) Jimi Hendrix Experience's second album.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience took the world by storm with their 1967 debut, Are You Experienced. Hendrix had earlier worked as a session musician for artists like Little Richard, but it quickly became obvious that he now had the potental to become a rock legend in his own right. The hard-rocking psychedelia of his first album was something masterful in its own right, so it was only proper that the band release a follow-up album. And in 1968, Axis: Bold As Love was released. Read on for my review of Hendrix's sophomore effort.

This album is another excellent release from Hendrix. It's not as good as Are You Experienced (in my opinion, anyway), but it's still a solid album as only Hendrix could put out. The album spawned Hendrix classics like Little Wing, If 6 Was 9, and Castles Made Of Sand. It's not surprising that so many fans of his praise these songs - they're nothing short of excellent. But once again, Jimi manages to serve up more than just rockers that would become catchy hit singles. Spanish Castle Magic, You Got Me Floatin', and the title track go to show that an artist's hits are not necessarily their finest compositions. Even though Jimi's guitar playing is the highlight of this or any Jimi Hendrix recording, his backing musicians also do an excellent job. Another excellent thing about this recording is that it's not nearly as raw as the debut in terms of the tracks and production. Although I personally prefer the debut, Axis still stands as a solid album that blows away the work of many of the other artists of the day.

The most common version of this album available in America (as of December 17, 2004) is the remaster. These remasters are great because they improve the sound quality and even give us greatly expanded liner notes. Unfortunately, unlike the Are You Experienced reissue, this one doesn't feature any bonus tracks! Why not? Hendrix has a ton of rare and hard to find stuff that would have been great to use as bonus material. Oh, well.

To put it simply, Axis is an album that every Jimi Hendrix fan needs to add to their collection. If you're new to Hendrix, though, start with a hits compilation or the Are You Experienced album. By listening to one of those first, you'll be able to appreciate the work on Axis all the more. Final verdict? Buy this album.

Okay, Axis! Here we come!.......2003-06-12

This, of course, is Jimi Hendrix second album. It's not as immediately accessible as his first album, but it's great in it's own way. It just takes a little longer to grow on you. Hendrix continued to redefine what a guitar could do, in his own inimitable way. It's great, but it.

If wishes were horses..........2007-05-19

Released in 1987, Wishes was the fourth studio album by singer/guitarist/songwriter Jon Butcher, who had previously recorded under the name Jon Butcher Axis.

It seems like such a cop-out to compare Jon Butcher to Jimi Hendrix, but at the same time I think it's the most appropriate comparison, and not just for the obvious "black rock guitarist" reason. Both guitarists are/were extremely proficient, even if their styles seem worlds apart at times, and both had very smooth voices that made for some memorable rock music. Compare Hendrix's "Little Wing" or "the Wind Cries Mary" to the title track on this album and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Musically, Wishes is very much a product of its time. It's a rock album, but there are plenty of AOR elements, including the kinds of melodies and keyboards that were so prevalent in the 1980's. It's hard to find another group comparable to Jon Butcher's sound. You hear bits of Asia and Survivor, as well as Bad Company and Thin Lizzy. Butcher plays tug of war with his audience, pulling focus from his powerful emotional vocal performance to his compelling and elegant blues-inspired guitar work and back again. To top it all off, Butcher's lyrics on this album are very powerful, emotional, personal, and relevant, something you definitely didn't see on a lot of other 80's AOR albums.

Wishes is one of the decades best (yet tragically overlooked) albums from an artist that deserved to become a household name. If you're a fan of 80's rock, or just good rock & roll in general, you owe it to yourself to check out Jon Butcher.

I bought this cd after having listened to the first couple of Jon Butcher Axis albums. I was at a Record show in central Pennsylvania and came across a radio station copy of this. It seems few bought it. What a mistake. Much like the Axis cd's this is solid from beginning to end. This guy is no Jimi Hendrix copy. He's the real thing. This cd to this point is his most solid solo, and I own them all. If wishes were horses.................

I Wish.......2005-07-11

Holy War gets the attention, but Wishes has great vocals, guitar riffs and a true heart-felt feel to it. You can feel the emotion in Butcher's voice and you know that the song is inspired by something that has happened in his life. This song is on all my "make-out" tapes and CDs because of the effects his voice has on women.
I first heard this compilation on cassette and wore the tape out. I am glad to see that it has made the conversion to CD. It's a shame that this group never had the commerical success it deserves. But those of us that have had the good fortune to hear their work, will always have a place for them in our hearts.

Really not lullabies per se. Kind of odd mix of songs that aren't particularly soothing. If you really want lullabies, try the Putamayo line for multi-culti music.

Tries a little too hard.......2007-04-05

There are a couple of great tracks on this album and some wonderful singing.
But!!! There is little unity between the western and middle eastern singers and the musical accompaniment and is often intrusive. It sounds like it was recorded in the studio later and added in, as it often has little to with the song, the singer or the singers style. I wish they had just recorded the singers acapela. That would have been a great album.

Axis of Evil.......2007-01-11

A powerful reminder to us all that we are connected in our humanity by something as simple as a lullaby. The lullabies chosen are from places that Mr. Bush deemed the axis of evil. The title may put some off, but if the time is taken to hear the haunting, loving lullabies a new understanding about our humanity can be fostered.

this cd is haunting and beautiful. the first piece has incredible slightly dissonant harmonies.
i like the original language and the english translation. the story of how these songs were collected
is really interesting. enjoy

I encourage everyone to listen to this album. Everyone. It's not only a collection of beautiful songs, sung by beuatiful voices -- it's also a reminder of what it is to be human: to love and care, unconditionally. Everywhere on our precious planet, parents love their sons and daughters. This album reflects that, in a careful mix between the traditional and the modern.

Of course, as the title signals, the album is also an answer to the dangerous attempts to simplify and evilize millions of people. People just like you and me.

With the advent of Myspace music I have bought a lot of cd's of singers that hold a profile. When I came across Gabe Lopez, purported song-writer for a previous American Idol contestant, I thought there would be a strong professional quality about the music that is sometimes lacking in Myspace Users recordings.

The balance of the tracks to the vocals is off in several songs and at times the background music does not match what is being sung.

The artist has the following strengths:

Great music writing skills
Understanding of musical nuances
Sexy Brand

The artist has the following areas in need of improvement:

Vocal quality - especially in tone and dynamic usage
Matching music with lyrics so they flow together
Interval jumps
Mixing of track with vocals so there is a more even sound

I think Gabe Lopez has a lot of potential and if he were picked up by a professional label, he could really make a name for himself. He is already successful just on talent alone. I imagine his fame would grow immensely if talent were coupled with managerial and marketing skills of someone whose talents lie there.

This CD is amazing! This CD gives you more than the standard 10-13 tracks. The songs are a mixture of genre's and they fit well together. This is a Must Have CD in your collection.

Generous and cool.......2006-10-17

The title of this review is simple. It is a generous CD indeed, and that alone would make it cool. The 18th track is roughly 20 minutes long, with extra songs to delight (although their text isn't in the album contents). Gabe Lopez sings songs ranging from grunge to ballads, and his voice traverses such territory far more surely than many other singers. Don't let his classical background scare you off, because that just means he can sing and not scream higher notes. "Everythings' gonna be fine" is so simple and direct that you are almost humming it on first hearing as he is singing it. Each song has its own sound and direction, which eliminates the fatigue some albums cause (same old, same old, over and over). If you want to investigate a new voice and sound (and understand the words, too), try Gabe Lopez. Making this album engaging wasn't about Gabe, it is truly "about you" the listener.

Patricia Thelma Amphlett, OAM was born on 17th March, 1949 in Paddington, Sydney, Australia. Whilst it is often considered that the nickname Little Pattie came about by the fact that she was born on St Patricks Day, the honour lies with some beach going friends who named her so because of her stature. First single 'He's My Blonde Headed Stompie Wompie Real Gone Surfer Guy/Stompin at Maroubra' released November 1963 when Pattie was 14 years old. Reached No 2 in the Top 40 after the Beatles "I Wanna Hold Your Hand. This album of 20 tracks covering the years from 1963 - 1969 is a great representation of her career and the surf craze that had hit Sydney at the time. Little Pattie became the youngest Australian entertainer at 17 years of age to entertain troops in Vietnam. Still maintains a busy performing schedule.
