Album Description

Original soundtrack to the 1976 musical gangster parody film starring a cast of kids and young teenagers portraying New York gangsters of the '20s . The cast includes Scott Baio as Bugsy and Jodie Foster as his love interest Tallulah. Although the actors 'sang' the songs on screen, they were actually lip-synching to voices pre-recorded by adult singers, whose voices were sped up. Words and music by acclaimed songwriter Paul Williams. Polydor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great quality CD of a fun movie.......2007-07-07

The film Bugsy Malone is an interesting bit of 70's nostalgia, done like the classic gangster films from several decades combined with a musical this would be an average film and cd if it wasn't for one thing, the cast is all children!
Now the singers are all adults so unless you've seen the film this may not make a difference to you but still. I loved this film when I was a kid I thought it was funny and something I could relate to far more than the adult ganster films. The songs are cute and done in typical Paul Willams style. I particualrly enjoy the finale song but the entrie CD is worth a listen if you like Phantom of the Paradise and other Paul William's classics.
SIgh I just wish someone would release the film here in the US.

5 out of 5 stars A certain something no other film has........2007-01-21

This is a film that takes me back to the years of my youth. The feelings it gave me back then (when I was of an age with the actors), come back with every new viewing. Fun, innocence, hope, determiniation, love, and more, for which words can't be found. The bonus of watching it as an adult, is that you can see the subtle perfection of certain scenes and acting (Jodie Foster admittedly gives a performance years ahead of the others), and the almost irrepressable delight of the kids taking part in it's production. When I first saw it, I came away wishing I could live in that strange land of sharp-suits and cream-pies, where the ultimate conflict culminates in universal love and a collosal food-fight. Give it a viewing. You may be one of those happy ones who love it.

4 out of 5 stars what happened to blousy's song?.......2006-04-24

did anyone notice that the song "i'm feeling fine" is not the same version as the one in the movie. the one on this CD sounds like a bernadette peterson version.

i used to have the LP, and I believe it had the original movie version on it.

anyone ... ?

5 out of 5 stars A Slice of Heaven.......2006-03-04

Ne'er have i heard such a melodic array of children's caterwalling. Could they have got it any more right with this. Ms. Foster is a pleasure as always, but lets not forget the fresh faced Scott Baio.(Wonderful). I challenge anyone not to devour it. Pukka.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta love it!.......2005-11-11

If you're a fan of the wonderfully entertaining movie, this soundtrack is a must have! The full version of Blousie Brown's sultry audition song, "I'm Feeling Fine," is wonderful, and the "Bad Guys" street-dancing number is one of the greatest musical comedy tunes I've ever heard! If you loved the movie, you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Bugsy Malone is definetely a big hit!.......2005-02-11

To all who want to buy this CD - I have bought it myself and am absolutely addicted! My Performing Arts Academy are putting on Bugsy Malone, and so i got this CD for help (as i am playing Blousey Brown). The songs are just amazing - the children have very strong voices and present the music very entertainingly. All of the numbers are great - although my only criticism is that the Bugsy Malone song is not as good as in the film, but apart from that, it's great fun for all.

5 out of 5 stars It was awesome.......2003-05-13

This soundtrack is very High school musical like, and I played Fat Sam in my school's production of this classic. The music is great, Twenties style, Williams does an amazing job. I particulary enjoy the song "That's why they call him Dandy!" Very catchy. I actually liked how our Dandy Dan sang it better, but it is an awesome song, and overall an awesome CD.

4 out of 5 stars Way better than the film!.......2001-08-13

I started gettin interested in this musical when my school announced it would be our next major production! So, in preparation i bought the film and this CD album version! Even though the film is now a classic, i think it needs modernising and i think the National Youth Theatre would be a great choice! Talullah and Dandy Dan excell theirselves for their ages! So i auditioned and was offered the part of Dandy Dan! In stupidity i thought i would get to sing my favourite song from the album - That's Why They Call Him Dandy Dan, however, i soon learned that we couldn't! All the film's classics are there with one or two extras. The arousing version of Fat Sam's Grand Slam will get anyone's foot tapping along, and the three part harmonies of Bugsy Malone shine through the famous melody. I personally do not like the version of I'm Feeling Fine. Bugsy's voice is absolutely appauling, perhaps due to the fact that his counter melody is so low. All in all, a good little buy and a must for all Bugsy Malone fans!

4 out of 5 stars Bugsy Malone.......2001-04-23

I am currently playing the role of Dandy Dan in the Palo Alto Children's Theatre's production of Bugsy Malone, so I know the music. And the children in this revival have a lot of talent and do a great job performing a wonderful musical!

4 out of 5 stars Good, maybe great, not fantastic.......2000-12-11

I must admit, my school recently did this play so I am partial to the the music but it really is a great musical in my opinion. Problem is on this album, there are a few children who don't know how to blend with the rest of the ensemble. And, a few songs have re-written a bit which I didn't like but, the melodies are the same and the most of the songs are quite good. I would say I'd recommend it but only if you've seen or been in the play or movie.

5 out of 5 stars Pure listening pleasure.......1999-04-24

The variety in this soundtrack is incredible. Light and lively, soulful and sad. Every song is pure pleasure. I, like most, enjoy all types of music -- but this is one of my all time favorites!

5 out of 5 stars This CD is one of my favorites!.......1999-01-08

I was so stoked to find this cd. I had been looking for it for quite a few years, so there is no disappointment in it whatsoever. Thank you Paul Williams for giving us your gift!

5 out of 5 stars All bow to the master of musicals, Paul Williams........1998-11-23

It's too difficult to describe the beauty of Paul Williams' music. From poor cleaner Fizzy's soulful rendition of 'Tomorrow', to the ragtime extravaganza that is 'Fat Sam's Grand Slam', every song - bar none - delights and thrills any musical theatre lover. I am listening to the soundtrack at this very second and re-living a thousand memories. That these songs were mimed by twelve year-olds in the film only makes them more magic. Thank you, Paul Williams, thank-you thank-you thank-you.

I love the movie! How can one go wrong with the soundtrack?

5 out of 5 stars "For all his friends, he always seems to be alone...".......2002-11-25

The year 1976 saw the release of a most singular new musical, "Bugsy Malone". Performed by a cast consisting entirely of children (average age: 12) and set in prohibition-era Chicago, "Bugsy" chronicled the adventures of opposing gangsters fighting for control of the, uh, "sasperilla" market. The movie itself is beautifully shot and well-acted by it's pint-sized cast, but the real star is the surprisingly good Paul Williams score.

This Limited Edition CD contains all the original songs, newly remastered, straight from Japan. They range from the pensive title song, to the sultry "My Name is Tullulah", to the wistful "Ordinary Fool"; all with a distinctive ninteen twenties feel. The bouncy "Bad Guys" is a great comic tune ("We coulda been anything that we wanted to be/With all the talent we had") and "Fat Sam's Grand Slam" makes nice use of the honky-tonk piano used throughout the score.

While the melodies on all the songs are gorgeous, it's the lyrics that really shine through. On the terrific "Down and Out", Williams fuses a sparkling wit ("Lady Luck is fickle/But a Lady is allowed to change her mind") with a gentle pathos ("Think of all the time you're wasting/Time's a precious thing to let roll by..."), and on the stunning "Tommorrow" he combines a torchy melody with lovely, aching lyrics.

The album ends with the sweet "You Give a Little Love", whose repition of the first two lines ("You give a little love and it all comes back to you/You know you're gonna be remembered for the things that you say and do...") carries the movie into the closing credits.

While I like the film, I almost feel the score is just a bit too good for it, and I would love to see a retooling of "Bugsy Malone" as a straight 20's musical, with adults in the cast. Until then, be satisfied with the Soundtrack, a must for Williams' fans and musical buffs.

        5 out of 5 stars Bugsy's Best.......2002-04-18

This album shows the great songs of the movie Bugsy Malone. In an all children cast the music is very thematic and up beat but also can fit the mood. The notes will dnace in your head. If you like the movie, you remember it is a musical with great actors, acting, and dance. This CD is what I'vee been waiting for. I strongly suggest you get this one.
