Brazilian vocalist Flora Purim brought a unique approach to her art that profoundly altered the nature of vocalization. She expands the basic techniques of vocalise--where every syllable is phrased like a note played on a reed or brass instrument--to include world music. On the title track her voice shifts, like a chameleon, from an exotic bird camouflaged by the jungle of husband Airto Moreira's percussion effects to a soothing delivery more reminiscent of Astrud Gilberto. This is a very great set, and great performances.
This album is one of the finest brasil-psycho-jazz-fusion albums ever made.

The switch from Dr.Jive to Light as a feather is amazing, the performance of the band with light as a feather (a real Jazz classic) is superb, never heard this song so good as on this album. A wannahave!

"still trying to figure out if there's a CD that includes her rendition of "You're Everything" - yes!! - it's on Return to Forever's Light As A Feather, a fantastic latin jazz album with beautiful Fender Rhodes electric piano playing from Chick Corea among other luminaries, and, as on this Flora's in fine voice on a few tracks - buy it if you like this, or latin-influenced jazz!!

Two summers ago I was looking for a new CD to buy. Although I was intrigued by "new/neo" soul, I wasn't in the mood for hip-hop based music. I did want to hear something soulful, but whose fundamental component was jazz... and I wanted something that drew on a wider base than the American tradition. The music on "Butterfly Dreams" was exactly the type of music I was looking for. I guess I was really in a retro/nostalgic mood - my description of the music (though uninformed) is that it's similar to some of Stevie Wonder's 70's music, only authentically (as opposed to ostensibly) rooted in jazz. It has all of the elements of an enjoyable jazz or popular album - the solos are fun, and the melodies range from joyful to melancholic. The musicians are all jazz legends in their own right, and Flora herself is a refreshingly unique and inspirational vocalist. Much of what I said above applies to "Open Your Eyes You Can Fly" as well (though it's much more energetic and varied), but I prefer "Butterfly Dreams" - the mood is more consistent (mellow - even the more up-tempo songs are light and "dreamy") and the songs are more haunting.

there were many over indulgences in the 70's.......2002-04-07

... earth muffinish philosophies translated into boring music were some of the least harmful. this is a good example. maybe 1.5 tunes on this album are worth listening to more than once. in fairness, the same could be said for many artists and albums of this genre.

After wearing out the grooves in the original LP, it's wonderful to have this CD. Flora's music took me through college and I introduced her to many others. It's lovely to hear Butterfly Dreams, Dindi, Moon Dreams, and Light As A Feather again. I'm still trying to figure out if there's a CD that includes her rendition of "You're Everything". That was special. If anyone can clue me in, please do.

Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01

This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.

The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.

The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.

Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.

Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.

Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.

Lots of Great Music... Cheap!.......2006-03-18

This is a ten CD box set with a huge number of great classical piano pieces. Most are played by Jeno Jando, who gets high marks from the Penguin Guide to Compact Discs and DVDs (highly recommended in its own right for the novice and experienced classical music CD buyer) for his playing on budget labels. You will recognize many of the pieces and they will serve as a jumping off point for additional exploration of classical piano. At roughly $2 each, you can't lose!

The Laserlight label also offers a similar box set of orchestral selections "Meditation - Classical Relaxation". At the time of this writing, that boxed set enjoys a much higher sales ranking than this one. This boxed set deserves to be discovered too. Don't let the low price fool you, these are excellent recordings.

Interesting representation of the singer.......2003-11-07

Eva Turner was condemned to be remembered as a one role singer; the role of Turrandot. Her artistry went far beyond that. She was a slow starter in many ways, and it took a considerable amount of time for major houses outside Italy to notice her. Yes, she was enjoyed and used in the Italian opera houses, but ignored in her own land. Eventually, she made her debut there and was a hit. Her voice is not to everyone's liking, and some critics found her interpretations very "ordinary." Some felt she couldn't color her voice enough to render complete interpretations of the roles she sang.

The real problem was her voice was not subtle at all. Through her development it grew and grew in size (many other singers didn't want to sing with her, not because of her personality -- she was a trouper, but because they had to strain so to be heard when singing with her). As with all very large voices, the virtues are astonishing and the vices just as pronounced. Perhaps she was not capable of much subtle coloring as many smaller voices were capable of, but she was able to "raise the roof" in the theatres she sang in, and present a very powerful living drama. Her intonation was nearly perfect at all times. And, unlike is often thought, she had great stage presence.

Finally, when a role came her way, one in which she had no competition, people were willing to actually open their ears and hear what she had to offer.

This set of recordings is very interesting to listen to. Yes, as with all "complete works of anyone" we hear repeats of various arias. The key then is to listen and see what changes had developed as the performer expanded their understanding of the role. Few singers really show much development in that regard. In this case, there are improvements that we hear from time to time.

Some of the pieces recorded do nothing for me, and I wouldn't have wasted the time recording them, however, they reflect what producers were having singers record at that time.

One role that Turner sang and excelled in was the Leonora from Trovatore. Yes, she had the necessary agility. She even produced a beautiful trill. Sadly, nothing here gives evidence to this fact.

I recommend this recording for those interested in having recordings of this great and under appreciated singer who had so much to give. I recommend it also for those interested in hearing a truly huge voice (some say that even Nilsson could come close to the power of Turner) recorded with minimal destortion. We are not able to know exactly how magnificent her voice really was, not even through these recordings, but we can hear the even quality of her noble instrument.

It is a pricey set, but for those who are interested in historic recordings of very famous singers, I would recommend it.

Voice of a Legend.......2001-01-13

Dame Eva Turner was arguably the greatest singer that England produced in the last century. Sadly, she was also one of the most under-recorded singers in history. This compilation finally releases in one package all of the material that we know of at this time. Unfortunately, that means that there are numerous recordings of the same arias, done at different times. Rumors continue as to the existence of more material in the vaults of companies in England, but none of that is available.

What you will hear is the voice of the definitive Turandot, a role which Dame Eva premiered in many houses, though the first performance of the opera was sung by Rosa Raisa. However, Franco Alfano, who completed the opera after Puccini's death proclaimed Dame Eva as the perfect Turandot. She effortlessly produces enormous waves of sound that are, at turns, steely or supple. Her instrument was one that has only been equaled by the great Birgit Nilsson.

Dame Eva left the stage in 1949 and moved to Oklahoma, where she was a professor of voice at the University of Oklahoma for 10 years before returning to her native England and taking her place on the faculty of the Royal Conservatory. She died in 1990, at the age of 98.

Handsome Authentic Good Moodsetter.......2007-04-12

An intimate native experiential creation-- I wouldn't say I sit and absolutely listen to it, a single slowish/quiescent flute of another culture, at least not much yet, but driving on a solitary foothill road the other night, it was rightly special. I stopped to take some photos of a sheered-off tree with all these images, angel- one bug-like with starry antennae, also mysteriously modern Incans (with those semi-bucketish/brimmed hats they wear sort of shaped like our old folks' ones), North and Central America (no South?), and fairy, etc in its bark. Then I returned and switched the music back on and a great half-Moon rose awesomely from behind a distant Sierra ridge! This cd has assisted several such times at home and driving. It is an excellent production-- Carlos Nakai's that I recently tried frayed my ears with its amp and effect, etc but this is almost like listening to a seashell, gentle on ears wise. It is personally and culturally beautiful in naming and art (not much lit or art inside though which bothers me some but likely due to costs)- and coinciding perhaps with the minimal and careful feelings but without being too. There is a sense of sharing older young adult male ingrained wisdom, dreams, and respect. Please don't get me wrong. Nakai's may have a more stop and listen, great-sensed matured entertainment obviously and its own great spirituality but this touches in meeting it and being with its puerer-ness, and greater innocence(?) Maybe it's because Nakai originates in desert and his myths are more widely known, but his seems more general and darker. (I wish I could listen to it enough to understand better though.) Anthony's is felt-good mysterious and sacred personal yet in a way that can be comfortably shared, if with respect. At the right times, it has been perfect calming- and for my muse and mood intro and healthy, humble, confident and brave sustain. I don't really know it though. What is the butterflies' personal and other significance to him etc.? They have mattered to me greatly though in sync with listening to this and other aspects of my recent spirituality.
