There's a popular movie trivia game called Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon whose rough hypothesis is that the actor is somehow the center of the cinematic universe. One doesn't get very far into the game without encountering Footloose. The film that seems destined to become an 80's camp classic (repressed Midwestern youth bravely fighting for their right to dance) was also a notable trailblazer in the pop song soundtrack marketing scam, i.e. line up a bunch of contemporary hit makers and have them cut a batch of songs that might not be germaine to the film's plot but will sell oodles of units. But damned if Footloose isn't a classic slice--for better or worse--of mid-'80s, album-oriented rock. This kind of instant era-compilation must make the folks at K-Tel very nervous. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24

If you like listening to songs played in the background of movies, go for this one. I am more of the score type of soundtrack buyer. The CD in a whole was enjoyable for a car ride, but not much more than that. I am still satisfied with my purchase though.

2 out of 5 stars the burden of older recordings.......2007-01-09

I was a bit disappointed about this SACD. The sound quality is better then the original one but not that good compared to some other SACD's I own. The best one until now is by far 'Brothers in Arms' by Dire Straits. It is also based on a (20 years) old recording but you really get the feeling sitting next to Knopler when he tickles those strings.

5 out of 5 stars better than the first.......2006-11-03

There are not many times that the remastered out does the original but this does and the added bonus of 4 tracks are a welcpme addition.

5 out of 5 stars great music with great technology.......2006-10-29

This SACD is worth buying. Sound is better than it was eventhough it has only two channel.

3 out of 5 stars FOOTLOOSE ~ A little too loose for me........2006-09-19

A great CD! However, it cannot compete with the hits from "FLASHDANCE".

Footloose is only one of a batch of dance-movies-turned-musicals from the late-'90s, but it's probably the best. Unlike Fame, it gives an audience the movie songs it expects to hear, and unlike Saturday Night Fever, it complements those songs with newly written, honest-to-goodness book songs that support the plot (written by Dean Pitchford and Tom Snow, who wrote songs for the original film). Like the 1984 Kevin Bacon film that inspired it, Footloose follows the story of Ren (Jeremy Kushnier), who moves with his mother (Catherine Cox) to a small town where dancing is prohibited by law. Teens will be teens, of course, so Ren ends up at odds with the town and especially the local minister, Reverend Moore (Stephen Lee Anderson). Along the way, the characters sing familiar songs from the movie ("The Girl Gets Around," "Holding Out for a Hero," "Let's Hear It for the Boy," "Almost Paradise," and of course the title tune), but the new songs are enjoyable as well. Footloose: The Musical doesn't exactly break new ground, but it's a good listen, particularly if you like the movie. The booklet includes a detailed synopsis, photos, and full lyrics. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Wish this would come back around!.......2006-08-25

Ever since working on this show 2 years ago, I've tried to get a copy of this disk. I waited patiently for someone to start selling it again, to no avail. I wish they'd either start marketing this Original Broadway disk again, or else stage a revival! It is a fun show.
Finally, I had to go and copy this from a friend because I couldn't buy it anywhere... its definitely worth listening to!

I didn't give it 5 stars because sometimes it seems a little toooo over the top Broadway and because some of the slower songs don't quite hold my attention. However, the CD mostly makes up for this with high energy, high fun tunes that make you want to dance.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-03-14

This is my absolute favorite CD ever!!!!!! My school just did a production 2 weeks ago and i was in it, it was so cool listening to the music over and over. I have every song stuck in my head. My favorite songs are Footloose/on any Sunday, Holding out for a hero The girl gets around, I'm Free, Lets hear it for the boy, Almost Paradise, and MAMA SAYS

5 out of 5 stars A CD For The Ages: FOOTLOOSE.......2005-11-23

I am middle school student in a small town outside of Boston, and this past November, Coop Theatre did a production of Footloose. After barely snatching the main role as Ariel Moore, I was flustered with the lines and the tough music. The CD was amazing. The songs were hits that I still listen to. The songs I love the most were definitely:
Mama Says, Holding Out For A Hero, and Dancing is Not a Crime
If there is any CD that I recommend buying, this is it! I continued to do the show, and it turned out to be an amazing success. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Dancing is not a crime!.......2005-07-09

This recording is fabulous! They have revamped the 80's music to give it a new, fresh sound while still keeping the original mood intact.

More people need to be exposed to this show. Most of the people who have written reviews here have been in a production of the show. I am now playing Wendy Jo in it.

Personally, I think the best songs on this CD are:

Footloose/On Any Sunday
The Girl Gets Around
I Can't Stand Still
Somebody's Eyes
Learning To Be Silent
I'm Free
I Confess
Holding Out For A Hero
Footloose: Finale

Let's Hear It For The Boy just doesn't do it for me. Neither does Almost Paradise. But the rest of the songs on this recording are not to be missed!

It's a fabulous, energetic, beautiful, crazy, peppy piece of fun!

5 out of 5 stars Best Broadway CD Ever!!!!.......2005-05-09

I have the movie and broadway soundtrack of footloose, and by far the broadway one is ten times as good. The vocals in the broadway play are much better than that Kenny Loggins crap. The footloose favorites are 'Let's hear it for the boy", "Holding out for a hero", and the theme song. They're wonderful. Also, three unknowns, that weren't featured on the movie soundtrack, "The girl gets around", "I can't stand still", and track #14(I forget the name of it),a cute little rap, rock also.
I don't mean to sound like an Amazon clerk...but.... BUY! BUY! BUY!!

Summary; Don't waste your money on the movie soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Very exciting to listen to.......2006-02-18

As a long time fan of Bruford's drumming, I found this CD to be very suffice in showing that Bruford hasn't lost it at nearly 60 years of age. The only thing that's different with his playing is that he's matured tremendously.
The first track "Footloose and Fancy Free" is simply magnificent. The 5/8 or 10/8 groove is slightly reminiscent of a mozambique pattern. The highlights of this track are definitely the saxophone solo, and the way the band is able to bring everything down enough to hear a pin drop, then just explode.
Also, I like the Miles Davis approach of Bruford. He's nearly 60, yet he's drumming with guys less than half his age, and keeping up very well. Let me rephrase that: they're keeping up with him pretty well.
Bottom Line: one of the best live performances I've ever heard. Bruford hasn't lost a step.

5 out of 5 stars Great Jazz Rhythm Section, Live.......2004-02-24

I've figured out exactly what it is I think about this band, and why their music has been striking me differently at different times, depending on mood and level of focus.

The rhythm section (Bruford, Hamilton, and Hodgson) are truly great. I'm talking about great like Carter-Williams-Hancock were great. And like Jones-Tyner-Garrison were great. They are really that good. It is an extreme joy to listen to them, to how fluid and creative they are.

The soloist on top fails to generate much excitement in addition, though. He just kind of plays lines. His function is much like Charlie Rouse on Thelonious Monk's records - don't look to the saxophone for the excitement, it's really going on in the background.

Once you know what to listen for, you might enjoy this recording immensely, as I do. It's perfectly recorded. The compositions are quite interesting. And the band's style is a source of great pleasure to me - they remind me of the best of the music Keith Jarrett made with his Norwegian (if I remember correctly) band. But with a more fluid and active drummer. Frankly I love this music.

5 out of 5 stars Best Live Recording Ever!.......2002-12-26

If you like Earthworks, get this double live CD! The playing is flawless. The tunes sound BETTER than the studio recording. I met Bill Bruford when he played at a pub called Michael's in Boston. One of the most non-pretentious & decent human beings on the planet, as well as being a risky take chances drummer. This record showcase Earthworks and the modern jazz they are about. This is not the fusion stuff we associate Bill Bruford with. This is equally complex in a more accessable light. And it is done completely live! No need for the studio ones if you get this. Awesone spin!

    4 out of 5 stars Gran disco.......2002-09-23

No obstante he de aclarar algo.

5 out of 5 stars The Finest Bruford.......2002-08-19

I have to agree with the reviewer below. Downbeat magazine rarely hands out "five-star" reviews. This one certainly deserves it. Bill Bruford has been sharpening his Earthworks saw for a long time and "FootLoose & Fancy Free" is the essence of all the previous recordings. This music actually swings. I am so impressed with the way the compositions come together. From a high energy fusion approch to a quiet gentle ballad to full out swinging. This music is filled with great improvisations and group chemistry. The solos are first rate, especially the pianist who reminds me of a young Keith Jarratt. Bruford comes across as a very intelligent drummer with a great ear for talent. His approach reminds me of Art Blakely - taking young talent and stretching their capability around fabulous music. This CD will stay in my changer for a long time. Great job Earthworks. My ears are perking.
