Working as a featured soloist with Paul Whiteman's orchestra, cornetist Bix Beiderbecke still found opportunities to play in small jazz groups, where his creativity could range freely. This music comes from a six-month period between October 1927 and April 1928 and spotlights sessions led by both Bix and his frequent musical partner, saxophonist Frank Trumbauer. The earliest session features the Chicago Loopers, with Beiderbecke and Trumbauer heard to best advantage on the two takes of "Three Blind Mice." Six tunes by Bix Beiderbecke and his Gang represent the musical highpoint here, with Beiderbecke creating spontaneous lines that have the mark of great composition. He's in good company, as well, with frequent outbursts from Adrian Rollini on bass saxophone, an unlikely soloist but one who played his unwieldy instrument with enthusiasm and precision. There are also several tracks recorded under Trumbauer's name, some of which tend to the sentimental popular music of the day. But the music leaps to life whenever Beiderbecke's cornet, Trumbauer's saxophone, or Joe Venuti's violin comes to the fore. On "Cryin' All Day," one of the Trumbauer band's more spirited jazz numbers, Bix is adding fresh details to the out-chorus that still have the capacity to surprise. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good..........2005-09-04

It's hard to hear the innovation in Bix's playing as everybody who has followed him has copied him and (to a large extent) refined his ideas over the years. To the ears of the 20's and 30's his playing was incredibly fresh, but now it's hard to really see what the fuss was about. It doesn't help that these recordings are a bit hard to listen to. I'm sure the remastering and digital cleaning have brought them about as far as they can, but it's still tough to hear what's going on much of the time. As history, I'm sure these are great recordings, but as modern entertainment (for the largely uninitiated), there are better choices.

4 out of 5 stars An amazing collection.......2001-09-18

I have been a big Bix fan for many years, and was delighted when I purchased this CD. Bix, in my opinion, was the best jazz cornetist of all time, and ranks as my favorite jazz musician. The tone he was able to achieve on his cornet just floors me every time I listen to his records. This collection does a good job of bringing together some of his best recordings along with his rarest, and several tracks he might not even have played on! (I think most have agreed that Bix was NOT on the Lou Raderman sides). I would easily give this disc 5 stars if it weren't for the dull, lifeless remastering, which really dampens the sound and sucks the tone right out of Bix's cornet. I have a Parlophone re-issue 78rpm of "At The Jazz Band Ball" and even with a little surface noise, the clarity and brilliance is far beyond the remastered track on this disc. If you really like Bix, save your money and invest in the "Bix Restored" series which features excellent transfers by John R. T. Davies. If you only want one or two Bix discs, this is a good one to get. The discography is very good and the notes are o.k. Of course, the music is beyond compare, and the only thing that would improve this disc would be better transfers/remastering.

5 out of 5 stars The best Bix album of the bunch!.......2001-08-08

Believe it or not, there is no better Bix album than this. Also, in conjunction with Volume 1, there is no better Bix collection. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Canadian Bagpipes American Brass.......2003-11-11

I recently ordered and have just received the above mentioned album.
THANK YOU........
I ordered it just to have a copy of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, but after listening to the album, I am completely blown away. It is perhaps the greatest piece of music I now own. Depending on the song, I can get lifted up, mellowed out, or layed back, again THANK YOU, for having this album. I'm a very satisfied customer.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Great CD.......2003-11-07

This CD was originally longer with more titles. It seems the Altissimo! people after they acquired it from the Canadian Scottish cut out several titles and reduced the overall quality of the CD. Because of this and various other technical factors I would not recommend this CD at this inflated price.

5 out of 5 stars Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops are as American as apple pie.......2000-07-16

For those of us who have enjoyed the irrepressible Maestro Kunzel and the effevescent Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for so many years both live, on Cd and on PBS, this collection of Americana is as good as it gets. Sousa, long revered as America's March King, shines on these discs as the composer of delightful dance tunes and even 'The Presidential Polonaise' a worthy contender with the weighty European prcessional. Its a pity that the President doesn't trot this out for White House functions. The tunes are every bit a Fourth of July celebration. The spoken word piece, 'Casey at the Bat' couldn't have a better narrator than Johnny Bench,a man who knows the score about baseball. So, if you want to have yourself up and marching and dancing and laughing around the house, buy this collection and treat youself to a holiday any day of the year.

4 out of 5 stars This is DEFINITELY worth a listen!.......2007-01-16

I am a sax player as well as a music teacher and have found this CD to be well worth the money! Not only do you get a wide variety of styles, but you also get to hear one of the rare saxophone orchestras who use uncommon instruments. You can tell that these players have a lot of fun together, which makes it all the more enjoyable to listen to as well as teach with. There are slight intonation problems on the occasion, but when you think about all of the things they are doing - I think I'll let that one slide! Don't miss out on this unique and enjoyable group! My personal favorite track is Casbah Shuffle. I hope you enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS CD!!!.......2005-09-18

What a major disappointment. Has this group ever heard of intonation, vibrato, or articulation? There are several spots on this CD where the "ensemble" is just not even close to being together. I don't know what these other reviewers are talking about. Don't buy this CD "just to hear the contrabass sax." I have heard better sounds from my lawn mower running over tree branches. The Nuclear Whales should pull this recording off the market to avoid any more embarrassment. I will not buy any more of their recordings, and urge you to do the same. Save your money for gas.

5 out of 5 stars Totally enthralling!.......2000-09-30

If you only have one saxophone ensemble CD, it should be from the Whales. And if you don't like saxophone, buy this anyways--you will still like it. Good music is music that sounds good, right?

This CD starts, appropriately enough, with a fanfare (Fanfare for the Common Man), which makes great use of the soprano lead. The lower voices are gradually layered in, but they don't bring out all the horns until the second track, which rotates the leads among all the players, including Don Stevens on the Contrabass.

To put it mildly, the Contrabass sax is more than a bit unusual, and there are only a few in existence. Stevens' horn was fortuitously discovered in a New Jersey warehouse just before demolition. The difference between a more standard quartet and this orchestra is the addition of 50% more players and additional voices. The Whales always supplemented the standard 4 saxes (soprano, alto, tenor, and bari) with sopranino and bass. Adding the contrabsss makes this pure magic. Nobody can listen to a contrabass sax without cracking a smile.

I'm a sucker for Ellington, so when it is played by a talented group of musicians like this--especially a sax ensemble--its irresistable to me. The Ellington medley is exquisite, with a tearful interpretation of "Come Sunday" immediately followed by a novel rendition of "Caravan."

The contrabass totally rocks on "Casbah Shuffle". That thing just kind of thwops-it is almost percussive, which makes a great effect in conjunction with the tabla (the Indian drum that goes `dweep, dweep, dweep') and tam tam. With a soprano lead, it has a real Don Ellis "Electric Bath" kind of feel. This is fun stuff-I can't imagine anyone not liking this.

No group located in a tree-hugging locale like Santa Cruz, CA would name themselves Nuclear Whales if they didn't have a sense of humor, but a novelty number like "Shuffle" is immediately followed by a completely serious number, "New York City Ghost," which is so haunting it gives me goose bumps. Interestingly, they don't identify the soloists, and I'm not sure which of the 3 soprano-players does the lead in this one. For the most part, they arrange their own stuff, but this one is arranged by Lennie Niehaus.

Back to another upbeat number; "Sweet Georgia Brown" must have been written with the saxophone in mind. This is the thwoppiest chart for the contrabass. It's followed by an original vocal piece by baritonist Ann Merrell called "Mold, Mold" that would be perfect for some of the Louis Jordan-inspired swing bands that were popular a couple years back.

The rest of the album is more of the same, alternating grit, swing & jazz with Richard Strauss and Louis Gottschalk. This group can play anything, and it sounds great.

5 out of 5 stars Much Larger Than Whales!!.......1999-04-07

Folks, this is simply ensemble sax at it's finest! It don't get much better!

Being a lover of Bass Sax, the Contrabass only added more musical jucies to my ears and pulled untold watts from my system!

UNBELIEVABLE arrangements! GENIUS! More genius are the artists! You have no idea what takes as a musician to get to this plateau, and beyond that, get THIS many together as a group and WHALE away!

The NW are the Canadian Brass, only with reeds! And MORE! A MUST if you are an audiophile! If you are a reed player, you already own it. If not, GET IT!

From Dixieland to Classical and everything inbetween, they have it all. The campiness of various tunes exude artististic virtuosity and push the creative envelope!

You MUST hear this on a high end system as I have. Bozak 310-B Concert Masters do very fine with this range of frequences. (28 cycles required--minimum, to hear it all!).

CRANK IT! You will feel things you never felt before! The arrangements are spectacular!!!

A VERY good HIGH quality recording. No limiters or balonery! Just a PURE sound without distortion.

I can't say enough. Simply the best stuff I have heard in YEARS!

I'm in Milwaukee. If you are near or get by here, look me up and HEAR this correctly!

That's how strongly I feel about the Nuclear Whales! Simply a joy and acts as auricle viagra!

5 out of 5 stars West Coast Jazz ala Paich.......2000-09-05

First of all, if you like 1950's west coast jazz be sure to check out this label (VSOP) for more titles. I don't know how long it's been around - I just stumbled onto it via this session. But they seem to have a growing catalog dedicated to reissuing vintage vinyl from the 50's California scene. Anyway, this session is unique if for no other reason but it's instrumentation: two trumpets (Jack Sheldon and Don Fagerquist) blended with two valve trombones and a swinging rhythm section. Most of the tunes are up tempo swing numbers with interesting west coast harmonies and great solos from some of the best studio jocks of the era. Even the few ballad numbers have some unique interplay between the trumpets and trombones. If you like Paich, or Bill Holman, or Shorty Rogers etc. you'll wear this one out. Highly recommended and worth the wait if you special order.

Album Description

The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps is the only musical unit of its kind in the United States military. Because it is charged to represent the musical history of the Army, the Corps extensively researches all of its music, and much of what it performs is arranged from original sources dating as far back as the 17th century. The Corps uses arranging techniques and styles of the 18th century to promote the maost authentic performance possible. The uniforms worn by the Corps are designed from regulations of the Continental Army and represent what fifers, drummers and buglers would have worn during the 18th century. The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps is a special ceremonial unit in The Old Guard, the ceremonial escort to the President. In addition to ceremonies, the Corps performs traditional fife and drum music throughout the National Capital Region, including performances for visiting heads of state at the White House.

Is the first set of "A Jazz Band Ball"-cd a rhythm section with four brass, this is a rhythm section with three vibists who play very good: coherent, with good interplay and solowork, and good ensemble work. On some tracks you will also hear the marimba and the xylophone. The vibists are: Terry Gibbs, Vic Feldman and Larry Bunker. Also featured are Lou Levy on piano and Max Bennett on bass. And last but not least the great Mel Lewis "the tailor" on drums. Ten tracks in different tempos and moods. Very relaxing music without reeds and brass. One of the best engineers recorded this session: Bones Howard. Recorded brightly, well balanced.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Bix.......2006-11-24

Bix Beiderbecke shone brightly but burnt our fast. He died young and much of his recorded legacy is spoilt by ponderous dance band arrangements, bad material (often with horrendous vocals), and the inconsistency in playing that increasingly resulted from Bix's hard living. As well, his first sides when he was in cracking form are marred by atrocious recording quality that no technology can rectify. This is my only complaint about this compilation: there are too many of these discs at the expense of the later, much better recorded sides with Frankie Trumbauer. It's a shame to miss even one good recording of Bix at his best. His crystalline, rounded tone and subtly constructed solos leap out of the sometimes prosaic settings he was recorded in. Even when he mainly plays a rhythm lead his presence is unmistakeable. With that reservation, this is probably the best single disc compilation of Bix available.

5 out of 5 stars i never tire of hearing it.......2006-02-22

in this cd i can get almost all the bands in which bix played in,and every melody is music to my hears

      5 out of 5 stars A true genius.......2004-05-06

I grew up in the same town as Bix, and there is a jazz festival there (Davenport, IA) in his honor. Bix was so revolutionary in his approach, and the only musician with which he can be compared is Satchmo. Louis was an avid Bix fan himself (Ain't nobody sound like him yet). If you want to hear a true genius and jazz revolutionary, get as many of Bix's cds as possible. To paraphrase Hoagy Carmichael, the sound of his cornet is like making love to a woman. Amen!

5 out of 5 stars At the Jazz Band Ball~Bix Beiderbecke.......2003-07-20

I had heard about Bix's legendary tone and musicianship, so I decided to check it out for myself. It's all true. Bix plays beautifully. Nice re-mastering job; nice selection of tunes from beginning to end.

The music is happy, happy music. It puts a smile on my face. The fellas in the band sound as if they were having a great time with it. It's hard to imagine that this was the devil's music of its time. There's no soul-searching or deeper meaning to it, other than fun.

Originally, I bought the CD as an exploration into another era, a trip through the time tunnel. Now I can tell that I will be playing it often purely out of pleasure. Nice to meet you, Bix.
