Alto saxist Cannonball Adderly and pianist Bill Evans, bandmates on Miles Davis's epochal Kind of Blue, were band leaders by the time they teamed up in 1961 for this moody, yet lyrical, date. Though remastered with state-of-the-art digital technology, Riverside has kept the original artwork and liner notes, maintaining the flavor of this classic jazz LP. Adderly's robust, bluesy tone and buoyant phrasing make for an interesting contrast to Evans's rainy-day introspection. Coupled with the light touch of drummer Connie Kay and the gentle probing of bassist Percy Heath, the music projects a sophisticated and relaxed mood. On the sensitive ballads, such as "Goodbye" and "Elsa," Adderly reveals his after-hours side, reveling in the fullness of his rich sound. --Wally Shoup

A Classic Combination!.......2006-09-07
No jazz collection is complete without this remarkable album featuring two of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. If you liked "Kind of Blue" with Bill Evans and Cannonball, you will also enjoy the soaring and sensual sounds on this cd. It begins with a gorgeous piano introduction by Bill Evans on one of his best original compositions, "Waltz for Debby". "Venice" is equally memorable, and the version of "Nancy" is tinged with a bit of sadness that will leave you breathless. Connie Kay was certainly one of the most creative drummers out there during the 50s and 60s, and his performance on "Toy" is really fun to listen to. A true must-have disc!
Know What I Mean?.......2005-04-04
Cannonball's studio meeting with piano giant and fellow Miles Davis band mate, Bill Evans, remains to be one of the most popular albums in both of their vast recorded outputs. This is definitely for good reason since the two fit together perfectly on these sides. It's very interesting to contrast Cannonball's playing here with his many quintet albums of the same period. Since he is the only horn, you really get to hear him stretch out here in a very similar way to how he stretched out on "Cannonball Takes Charge" (see my review), another essential Adderley album. The selections of this album are perfect for these two men. The album is comprised of two Evans originals (the now standard "Waltz for Debby" and the modal title track), two exceptional ballads that weren't done too much at the time ("Goodbye" and the fantastic "Nancy (With the Laughing Face"), and a bunch of other tunes that the ensemble seem to be having a fun time with ("Who Cares?", "Venice", the very playful and aptly titled "Toy",and "Elsa"). Every single track shows off everyone present greatly, especially Julian and Bill who are definitely stimulated by the other man's prescence. All and all, this is an absolutely essential album if you're a fan of either Adderley or Evans, or if you just love great jazz sessions!
We Know What You Mean!.......2004-08-30
When jazz greats get together great music is not always the result. It is here! It's always a treat to hear alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley in a quartet setting. Not that I don't love the recordings he made with brother Nat, but it's nice to hear him stretch out as the solo horn. In the company of the ebullient Adderley Bill Evans' piano work is less introspective than we are used to. This is not a criticism! I love his intense piano explorations, but it's fun to hear him.....well, having fun! Half of the Modern Jazz Quartet (bassist Percy Heath and drummer Connie Kay) anchor the rhythm down solid. "Know What I Mean?"
Moody Beauty.......2004-07-05
Great line up - Bill Evans on piano, caught just after his rapid rise within the jazz world. Percy Heath and Connie Kay on bass and drums, together comprising one-half of the legendary Modern Jazz Quartet, masters of chamber jazz. And of course the great Cannonball Adderley, a saxophonist often slighted by those in the know, yet as gifted a player as any in modern jazz, fully confident in any setting, from honking the blues to the subdued melancholy of 'Kind of Blue.' Given the line-up, it's no surprise this album sounds more like 'Kind of Blue' than 'Mercy Mercy Mercy'. In fact, sometimes it's a little too moody and quiet - you want the quartet to let some fire out. But that obviously wasn't the idea behind the session (or sessions - as the liner notes point out, the album was cobbled together from three separate sessions due to scheduling conflicts). But it's a fine album. Cannonball's loving touch with 'Waltz for Debby' is only one of its many charms.
Beautiful, Swinging, Timeless.......2003-12-13
This is truly one of the great jazz albums of all time. Surprisingly, Evans' introspective style and Cannonball's soulful approach meld together perfectly. Perhaps this is testament to just how hugely talented these men are. Both The technical skill and pure musicmanship displayed on this record is just amazing. I've owned this CD for over 10 years now and still find so much to listen to in these recordings. Highlights are the amazing "Waltz For Debby" and Earl Zindars' waltz "Elsa", easily one of the most beautiful songs ever written, in my opinion. You simply cannot go wrong with this CD.

Elly Ameling now more available .......2007-03-07
I had a 33 rpm album of Elly Ameling singing Schubert lieder accompanied by piano and clarinet at times. It was one of my all time favorite albums so I have been disappointed that I have not been able to find it anywhere on CD.
Now I can just buy this excellent collection. So much music in one place! Since I confess that I am far from an expert on the rest of her records, I look forward to hearing her sing many other styles and composers.
I think it is silly to criticize her for not singing Wagner, for example, since her version of many songs, especially lieder, are nothing short of sublime. I would like to hear how many Wagnerians sing Schubert or Mozart.
I doubt if they could approach the skill and soul with which Elly Ameling sings lieder.
Delight in every note.......2006-03-10
To speak as briefly as possible about this superb collection from an equally superb singer, what can I say but that Ms Ameling possessed a voice that shone with radiant warmth and star-like shimmer? And unlike many another light lyric soprano, Elly Ameling was possessed of a very high standard of musicianship, considerable intelligence, and a sort of immediate charm that captivates the listener.
So many of her recordings have still to be released on CD, but this 5CD-set goes some way towards remedying the situation. The repertoire spans a wide variety - French mèlodies, Lieder, light-hearted "sentimental" songs, Bach, etc. - and in each piece, Ms Ameling shows that quality of pearl-like beauty. It is a beauty which is also extremely pretty - a beauty of voice that is never overbearing and over-ripe, but perfectly blossoming upon the tree of inspiration.
I recommend this set unequivocally. It truly is sheer delight.
While they last..........2005-05-17
Elly Ameling held the quiet stage for recitals of great artistry and dignity for several decades and sadly most of the enormously successful CDs of her long career output are now unavailable. For those who have little access to the documentation of this very special artist, this box set is a must. It is a compilation of many of her recordings with differing accompanists, conductors, orchestras and composers. And while not all of the choices for inclusion here would be considered her greatest moments, there are enough works that sustain the warm memories of the little Dutch hausfrau who quietly and simply paid homage to composers with her clear and intelligent musicianship and radiant voice.
Ameling was known to schedule recitals of Schubert cycles and songs and in the afterglow of her performance answer the demand for curtain calls with additional Schubert melodies: she gifted her audience with the dignity of honoring a composer's works by maintaining the focus on that composer rather than milk the audience with the usual encore applause-getting favorites. And special moments such as quietly and pensively strolling through the orchestra during the Mahler 4th symphony to arrive at front stage, unapplauded, just in time for the opening line of her singing - those simple homage to composers and collaborators made her selfless manner endearing to audiences.
Despite the fact that Ameling's voice was on the small side she was always able to muster the projection to carry her message solidly in context with an orchestra. Yes, other more famous singers have recorded Ravel's quintessentially French SHEHERAZADE, but few have the perfection of diction and aura of mystery that Ameling maintained. Whether singing with piano or orchestra, or interpreting Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi with the same degree of involvement as Brahms and Schumann and Schubert, Elly Ameling spanned a career that engendered passionate commitment from her fans. And this boxed set is a pocket full of memories to be treasured. Buy it before this too becomes unavailable. Grady Harp, May 05
Treasures From a Treasure.......2004-09-25
Treasures from a Treasure.
Ameling, one of the world's most beloved recitalists is captured here in a 5 CD collection offering some of her most beautiful recordings of song. While we are used to her perfection in songs of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Hahn, an added joy is her "pop" side, tackling - without a whiff of pretension, Porter, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, et al.
What an absolute joy it is listening to this amazing artist sing these songs with an almost uncanny natural ease. There is no resorting to a "pop" voice and yet most of these pop standards songs sound as though they could have been written for her. Clean attacks, sometimes a bit of the pop technique of hanging on to a consonant longer than a classical artist normally would shows an appreciation and understanding of the style. Still, there is never once a compromise of her vocal beauty.
I like the way the songs have been arranged for her voice in that she sort of sings them clean, unaffected in the first half and then lets loose and kinda "swings" with it adding embellishments but never really changing her voice (Price, von Stade and other favorite singers of mine seem to have always added a breathy quality to much of their crossover material.)
Ameling doesn't resort to trying to "let her hair down" or get down and dirty, but rather the honest with which she approaches every one of these songs shows how much she enjoys singing them and her style is as refreshing as stumbling onto a cool spring on a sweltering summer's afternoon. A wonderful surprise.
More than fully earned praise for an exceptional singer........2003-07-15
As I had the privilige of hearing this outstanding Lied-singer during her long career in Holland and being the proud possessor of almost all her recordings, I cannot but fully agree with the professional and joyful review of Mr. Robert Holliston from Victoria, B.C. Canada.
Yes, it is unbelievable that of about the 150 recordings Mrs. Ameling made during her long career (for the greater part of course on the 'oldfashioned' LP's, as well as the innumerable Dutch live-recorded radio-concerts), so few CD's have been released.
Speaking of tradition: it was the page-turner of the Wigmore Hall in London who told Mrs. Ameling after her first recital in this hall, that she reminded him of Elisabeth Schumann. (And he certainly didn't mean her looks only!)
For those who are eager to hear her singing Ravel's Shéhérazade (just one example of stirring imagination combined with her Art of Singing) I can tell you that Philips released a 2-box CD of this work in 1999, combined with Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and a compilation of French mélodies, i.e. Debussy, Fauré, Duparc, Satie. One of the gems is Caplet's Le Corbeau et le Renard which even make children, who know the fables of La Fontaine, revel in the singing of the quarrelsome birds....
Her brilliant accompanyist is Rudolf Jansen. Let us cherish great artists in their art!

Not Cheap, But Worth It.......2006-01-18
Hopefully a day will come when Oasis compiles all of their great B-sides and covers on a two-disc set (maybe even three). Until then, fans would be well advised to go ahead and cough up the $12 for this single, as no Oasis collection is complete without the unreleased tracks "Stay Young," a great original, and "Heroes," a fantastic, jangling cover of the David Bowie classic. If you dig Oasis, trust me, you won't regret it. Great stuff.

One of the Best.......2006-03-07
This is one of the best singles released by Oasis - ever. "D'You Know What I Mean?" is a great song in and of itself. However, the true value of the CD lies in the B-sides.
"Stay Young" has remained one of my most favorite Oasis songs since I first heard it. From the moment the drums open the song, you can tell this is a true work of art. The rhythm and lead guitars are spectacular as is Noel's harmonizing with Liam's lead vocals.
"Angel Child" is an acoustic gem sung by Noel. While this is listed as a "demo" it's almost perfectly polished. Noel's sweet, melodic chorus sticks in your head and lasts throughout the day. This could easily be added to the track listing of a future album.
The soft, simple ending of track 3 leads right into the pounding drums of track 4, a cover of David Bowie's "Heroes." This is another one sung by Noel and would do the Thin White Duke proud. The lyrics are belted throughout the song but are never overbearing.
This is a fantastic single and is well worth the money to any Oasis fan.
Oasis puts the best singels in the business out.......2004-04-16
D'You Know What I Mean is the first single off the Oasis album Be Here Now. It's a great single with some great and rare Oasis songs.
D'You know what I mean is a decent song. It's one of the songs you can tell Noel was definetly thinking about the Beatles when he wrote it. I like the beat to the song and the guitars are great in it.
Stay Young is a great rebelion song. I was glad they put it on The Masterplan album because this song is a gem. " Hey Stay Young Invincible." I played this song over and over the first time I heard it. Teenagers really can relate to this song.
Angel Demo is an ok song. I can see why the band has never done anything with it, but it's still some great songwriting from Noel. This is the only place to find this song at.
Finally we have a cover of Heros. Nobody does a cover quite like Oasis does. They always sound great and they never insult the original. All the guys are big fans of Bowie and this song is a nice tribute to him. It's an awesome song already and Oasis does a great cover. This is the only place to get this song from.
This is a grea Oasis single. It has two songs that are only available on it, so harcore fans really should pick this one up.
