5 out of 5 stars Live, rough and raw.......1999-01-18

I saw Otis live in New Orleans in 1966. This album comes close to that "live" experience. It was recorded with Otis's "road band". It is live, rough and raw. And you can hear his down-to-earth friendliness shine through. Not a "must-have, but it is a "must hear"!

4 out of 5 stars Go, J.R.!.......2004-11-08

This is a reissue of Johnny Rivers' first and second albums (At the Whiskey a Go Go and Here We a Go Go Again!). Both albums were recorded live at the Whiskey a Go Go, where Johnny and his sidemen were the "house band" at the time. Johnny Rivers may not have been the most original rocker around, but he played with an infecious enthusiasm that was quite enjoyable. It should be pointed out that all but two of the songs here are cover versions of other people's material. The two original songs here are Johnny's composition "John Lee Hooker" (mistitled "Whiskey a Go Go"), and "Walk Myself on Home" which was written by his bass player and his drummer. Although Johnny's cover versions are almost never as good as the original performers versions, the songs still have a fun, intimate, small club feel to them. Don't go looking for much originality in this CD, but if you are a fan of Johnny Rivers, you will enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Whiskey a Go Go.......2003-06-29

I love Johnny Rivers, I was at the club back in the sixites when he performed many of these hits. The first half of the CD I thought was great. It brought back so many memories of the music that night when it was live. Towards the end of the Cd I didn't care for some of the songs. But in all I still think it's a good CD of his music to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars An album you'll have fun listening to.......2003-05-20

I have had this on a record album for sooo long it will be fantastic to get it on a CD. His Memphis hit is well known, as well as Brown-Eyed Handsome Man and Lawdy Miss Clawdy. His music sparkles and the beat will get you moving. It Wouldn't Happen With Me had better get you laughing. Whether you enjoy rock, folk, country or pop, his enthusiasm and humor will grab hold of you.

4 out of 5 stars Live Rivers Rocks...........2000-08-11

I'm not usually a fan of live rock performances, but Rivers club performances are much more fun and infectious than massive stadium concerts. There's not much here in the way original material. However, Johnny's treatments of Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and even Beatles standards are a great listen!

3 out of 5 stars A little goes a long way..................2000-03-03

As much as I like Johnny Rivers, (and I am a big fan), this is way too monotonous. This 2 fer was recorded before he hit his stride with "...AND I KNOW YOU WANNA DANCE" (which is still not out on CD! ). Of course the advantages of CD players is that most are programmable. This might be great for a party but it's too much of the same thing if you're listening to it on a long drive.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I remember.......2006-06-27

My mother had Johnny Rivers Live at the Whiskey A Go Go on album back in the mid sixties. It was completely different than what is offered here. I distinctly remember several songs that aren't on this collection. He did his own version of Suzy-Q. Also had Stop in the name of love, and Land of 1000 dances. If I thought about it long enough I'm sure I could think of others that aren't there as well. I was only 12 or 13 back then. I loved that album and wore it out completely. So where did these songs go? This being a two album set that's currently offered I have no way of knowing which songs are supposedly from which album? But I do know that this isn't right. I really wanted to buy that album again but this is so completely different and wrong!

4 out of 5 stars More is Not Always Better.......2003-10-06

My roommate and I had purchased Johnny Rivers' Whiskey A-Go-Go- on a record album long ago, so when I saw that plus his Here We A-Go-Go Again on a CD I bought it for her birthday. Both of us found we liked the first set of tracks better than the second, including Walkin' the Dog, Brown-Eyed Handsome Man and It Wouldn't Happen With Me. We found the tempo on the Whisky A-Go-Go was faster than on the Here We A-Go-Go. It still has the Rivers' sound and plenty of tracks to do some foot-stompin' to, just so long as you don't need to worry about turning the sound down.

4 out of 5 stars Small Venue with a Tight Band and a Big Sound.......2002-06-13

I first heard the latter of this compilation (Here We A-Go-Go Again)at a friends place back in 1969. His mom had the record and everytime I'd visit, she would let me blare the stereo as long as I'd have Johnny Rivers playing. Some years later I bought both albums for my own and still listen to them today although "Here We A-Go-GO Again" gets the nod. Johnnys crisp guitar and harmonica playing along with Jerry Rubins drums and Joe Osbournes bass gave this trio a great sound.
Great songs like Chuck Berrys "Maybelline" and Roger Millers "Dang Me" were spun out on Johnnys southern style of Rockabilly Blues. "High Heal Sneakers" has a great bottom line rhythym with Johnnys almost inert vocal style. The album is mostly all cover tunes but I really appreciated the way Rivers kept the tempo for the audience who on more than one occasion included themselves in on the show. It's a real simple concept with a small venue armed with talented musicians playing to a very receptive crowd. I still play these songs and although not a considered a classic by any means, it still remains one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Alice Cooper - 'Live At The Whiskey A Go-Go' (Edsel).......2005-10-05

Just a mite similar to that of the umteen-something times released 'Live In Toronto 1969' or 'Slack Alice'(see my review),but better.Appears to have a different track listing as well for the most part.Tunes I was only too thrilled to fully experience within this vintage live recording were "Levity Ball"(sure wish he'd play this track while out on tour sometime),"Swing Low,Sweet Cheerio" and "Changing Arranging".A should-have for all Cooper fans.

2 out of 5 stars Much Better than "Pretties...".......2003-10-22

"Live at the Whiskey a-GO-GO" is a definitive snapshot of where the Alice Cooper Group was musically in 1969. I think this was the show in which Warner Bros. were being shown a number of artists for possible inclusion into the Warner stable of artists.

The material is pretty much from the first album except it sounds and is played like the band had rehearsed the songs. In all fairness, Alice himself said the first album was pretty much rehearsal takes of the songs. He knew they has mistakes, but the band were not able to re-record any of the tracks.

Overall, the band was trying to sound psychedelic, but they seemed at this point in there careers to have no sense of hooks and riffs. The arrangements are all over the place. Bob Ezrin worked with the band quite a bit to get the sound everyone is so familiar with on "Love it to Death". Glen Buxton's solos are original but a bit unfocused. He has kind of a jazzy-rock feel to his playing which did'nt resurface until "Blue Turk" on the "School's Out" album in 1972. Ironically, it was Buxton who seemed to have the most trouble going form his loose-styled psycheldelic lead playing to the more tight and commercial sound Bob Ezrin needed on later albums.

In closing, "Live..." is basically a completists album. It is interesting in it's own right to hear the group in this form but the performances and material, with a few exceptions, can't hold a candle to the Ezrin-produced albums which came later.

4 out of 5 stars Early Alice fan..........2000-12-08

This is a very good recording of one particularly "far out" performance, including tracks from their first album. You can almost hear the audience walking out of the room! Great liner notes and photo's. This blows away the "Live in Toronto 1969" recording that's much easier to find (I think it's still in print as "Ladies Man" and other titles). These particular live tracks are unavailable in the box set and are definitely some of my favorites. The boys were trying really hard to emulate Zappa and they got it wrong, but in doing it wrong they sure as hell got something else very right. Fans of Zappa, Sun Ra and Beefheart will probably dig this. It's not nearly as cerebral - not cerebral at all in fact, but highly irritaining.

2 out of 5 stars Early Alice!!!!.......1999-09-25

This contains early Alice Cooper tracks and frankly it isn't great but it is worth having not for any songs particularily but it is the beginning of an American institution Alice Cooper, plus trust me Alice goes on to bigger and better things. This is one only for the diehards so if you are new to Alice buy something else.

5 out of 5 stars This is a shame and a sin that this is not available in U.S........2003-09-08

This is Live, raw Otis at his best. These are the takes that didn't make it onto the first Live Volume - also inexplicably unavailable in the U.S. The band is loose - no Steve Cropper tight arrangements here - this was Otis the way he liked it: lots of banter with the audience and even mock shock at the responses it evoked. This audience was INTO it. "Chained and Bound", "Old Man Trouble", and lots more from this gem of an unissued second. I have the promo LP, it was never issued. One letdown...this CD cut one of my favorite tunes - "Destiny", which opened up the LP I have, but they kept "Hard Day's Night", which is really rough...so rough in fact that Otis doesn't know the words and makes some up as he goes! No matter, that's what it was all about. As Otis says in one of his moments of reveling, "..just take your shoes on off! Relax! Get soulful, you know? Just hollar loud as you wantta, stomp hard as you wantta, and we'll get into a thing, you know?! What a piece of History. This is a real find.
