Customer Reviews:
A Tenor Sax for the AGES.......2001-11-12
It appears that So MUCH important musics (especially in the Jazz and "Funk" genres) are only being reissued in Japan and/or England, before finally being shipped back to the continental USA ??? I find this ridiculous, dare say, UNBELIEVABLE,rhetorically speaking......
George Adams was one of the most interesting Tenor Sax/Flautistas in a long time, INSTANTLY IDENTIFIABLE he "spoke" only George Adams.
He created his own syntax, accent, brand of intervals and harmonic structures. The Adams trademark was the marriage of the "classic" fat Texas tenor sound and the post-Coltrane avant guard, and deliciously melodic frasing countered by intense avant-squalls of pain/pleasure. Also, his flute style was very beautiful, in a post-Dolphy mode....
I compare him in a roundabout way to guitarist Grant Green in the sense that, while he may not have had the incredible amount of "chops" and endless "ideas" , Mr Adam's incredibly emotional (and hummable) solos ring in my heart. Never a wasted frase.
This cd begins with the modal romp, "Intentions", a vehicle for an incredibly impassioned G.A. tenor solo, a tune that will so engross you , you can temporarily forget where you are! A quite FUN track!
"City of Peace" and "Metamorphisis for Mingus" will remind you of his work with Charles Mingus in that great lineup that included his musical partner in crime Don Pullen , and the brash and humorous trumpet of Jack Walrath, or his later recordings with the Adams/Pullen bands(w/ Mingus stalwart Dannie Richmond on drums, TOO BAD all 3 have "left this planeta"!
His sensitive reading of "Send in the Clowns"(an overworked tune usually, but G.A. breathes life into it) is touching.
It is a shame on the USA recording industry, as the "bottom line" is obvious the motivating factor, NOT the preservation and creation/rejuvination of important musical "statements",I hope someone takes notice & reissues this cd again. Hey, "package" it with any Mingus nostalgia, JUST GET THE MUSIC OUT THERE!
