A master of American popular song, Michael Feinstein turns to children's music for Pure Imagination and the result should please children and adults alike. The album includes story songs ("Ferdinand the Bull") and "message" songs ("Aren't You Glad You're You"), as well as favorites from films, such as the title track (from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) and a medley from Disney's Alice in Wonderland. This album is about what you'd expect from Feinstein, including irrepressible cheer, pleasant singing (if a little strained toward the top of his range), a guest appearance from Rosemary Clooney, and impeccable song selection. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Our favorite children's CD.......2004-10-20
Michael Feinstein captures the perfect balance of whimsy, fun, and songs that teach. He has a beautifully trained voice and he is backed up with wonderful arrangements and musicians. My 2 year old daughter and I listen to it over and over and never get tired of it.
Gorgeous Children's Music For Us Grown Up Kids........2004-04-29
I have to confess to shedding a few tears over this album, especially with the title and opening song Pure Imagination. As I grow older I find it harder and harder to feel the pluck of heartstrings, but Michael Feinstein does it with his rendition of the Anthony Newley classic. He takes me back to an innocent time with his infectious joy in this music. You can hear the smile on his face, hear the love he feels for the melody and lyrics. Most of the songs are happy and silly, but curiously there is one that every parent should listen to and take to heart. If you have heard this album, you'll know the song: Because We're Kids, from that amazing and surrealist movie The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T (From which the crazy Dressing Song also came.) This album is a true gem for all ages.
A Hot Fudge Sundae for the Senses.......2003-03-14
What a charming and magical interpretation of song. I have never heard such wonderful and unique stylings. My favorites are "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" and "The Mole People." Anyone who is young or "young at heart" will adore this collection.
Perfect for "kids" of all ages!.......2001-11-10
My kids and I discovered this CD a few years ago and loved it. The songs are great, my kids were amazed that I knew the words to lots of these "new" songs and they loved the silliness of many of them. Best of all, it is a CD that kids can listen to over and over and over again without driving their parents nut!
PURE IMAGINATION is pure satisfaction!.......2001-07-14
These whimsical songs are perfectly performed by this most-gifted artist. He plays with the words of the stories in a magical way and creates a delight for the ears and senses. I especially like his rendition of FERDINAND THE BULL. It brings to life the bullfight and this humble animal with his tale of woe. The other songs are a joy, also, to hear over and over again. More power to Michael Feinstein and his creative ability not only in writing music but in interpreting other's stories in songs. He is a marvel.

Album Description
The acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of Jellyfish, Moog Cookbook, and Imperial Drag wrote every song, played every instrument, and sang every note on this debut, an album that blends colorful melodies with rich harmonies and creative arrangements into pure pop perfection. "The disc is packed with breezy sonic confections that brazenly exhibit their creator's fondness for Paul McCartney, XTC, Queen, Brian Wilson, Burt Bacharach, and others in the pop pantheon" - Future Music Magazine.
Customer Reviews:
critics of the vocals should use proper perspective.......2007-04-16
Previous reviews do a terrific job covering this wonderful album. I just had to submit a short comment to those negatively criticizing the lead vocals by Mr. Manning. Yes, Andy Sturmer has an absolutely remarkable voice. Yes, it is a tremendous disappointment to all of us who adore Mr. Sturmer's vocals and what Jellyfish was that we've heard relative silence since Spilt Milk. But this album by Manning is a gift for the Jellyfish fan and the fan of simply good music. It has that unique Jellyfish creative magic in it. The vocals are good, obviously not Sturmer, but still good. I think they do the songs justice. I will enjoy it for the great album it is. That does not diminish in any way my hope for a Manning - Sturmer reunion, which is as fervent than ever. Let's hope this album sparks something.
Wonderful.......2007-01-10
Anyone who loves well-crafted songs, lush vocals, and catchy hooks will love this album. It's where Jellyfish would've gone if they hadn't broken up.
If you can ignore the lyrics, you may like this CD.......2006-11-20
The words to these songs are almost unlistenable, really. If you can ignore them, then many of the tunes will carry the record. Dragonfly and Appleby are lyrically annoying since they come from a guy who was in Jellyfish.
Dear Roger, please collaborate next time. Someone else need to write the words.
"DRAGONFLY" lyrics:
Dragonfly what are you made of
Are you made of love
Sent from above
To me?
Can this really be?
Oh Dragonfly now you're in my dreams
And though you seem
So far
You're my shining star.
Dragonfly can you be for real? Every glance I steal leads me on
Dragonfly your kiss divines I'm dying so sweetly
Dragonfly where can I find you? I've searched everywhere and still no sign of you this just can't be true
So veiled in this dream - you're a work of art that breaks my heart in two
What am I to do?
Dragonfly can you be for real? Every glimpse I steal leads me on. Dragonfly your kiss divines I'm dying so sweetly
Beware how they warned a god could fall for you
Something a spy should never do
.....
"APPLEBY" LYRICS:
Appleby where are you now
I've looked around the grounds but can't find you somehow
Appleby to lost and found
Appleby take off that dress
Hurry you'll make us late our annual game of chess
Appleby I'm not impressed

Pop Rock Gem!.......2006-10-28
It continues to amaze me to find "new" musicians who record in bedroom studios all across the country. Everyone was amazed when Craig Chaquico pulled this off, Roger takes it to the next level. The closest event I can recall to this release is Steely Dan's 1972 "Can't Buy a Thrill" that put pop/rock on its ear. The influences are many and varied...Beach Boys, Beatles, Osmonds, Neil Sedaka, Jimmy Webb, The Who, Styx, Yes, Chicago, Alan Parsons, ELO/Jeff Lynn, Astrud Giberto, Wondermints, Burt Bacharach, Supertramp, 60's Brit Pop, the list goes on... As for Roger's vocal ability, he's no Bocelli, but he is better than 90% of the front men out there. He has a unique "honey" styled voice with a smoothness not often heard these days (think Joseph Williams, David Pack, Donnie Osmond, Gerry Beckley). He doesn't try to imitate anyone, and has learned to be comfortable using his instrument as intended and well trained. Primarily a keyboardist, his chops on guitars and drums are commendable as well. Can't think of enough good things to say about this artist. Not every cut is excellent, but eight of eleven are standouts and addictive. The three deleted cuts from Solid State Warrior make for eleven very strong songs that could all be at home on the top 40...during some point of time. Buy this CD Now!
Please take the time to read it........2006-10-07
Song writing - 5 stars all the way Roger never a doubt.
Here is the thing and it's just one mans opinion. You don't have a strong enough voice to sing lead vocals. Your strength in harmony is undeniable, your strength in song writing is undeniable, your skill as a musician is second to none. You just don't have what is needed to fill the role of lead vocalist. That is the only thing that will keep this release from the ears of all who unfortunately will never get to appreciate it.

Opening with a gorgeous rendition of Willy Wonka's "Pure Imagination," Boston-based a cappella jazz quintet Vox One returns from hiatus with its fifth album. The personnel (they met, and many work, at Berklee College of Music) is intact from its 1993 self-titled debut: Jodi Jenkins-Ainsworth (soprano), Yumiko Matsuoka (alto), Paul Stiller (tenor/vocal drums), Paul Pampinella (baritone), and Tom Baskett (bass). Matsuoka is the chief arranger, while Stiller produces, arranges, and contributes the original "You Know" with other originals by Matsuoka ("Leave It to Me (Or Leave Me Alone)" and Pampinella ("Try"). Also interspersed are songs by Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder, traditional songs such as "Simple Gifts" and "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," and some beautiful improvisations. Pure Imagination is a welcome return of one of the most well-regarded groups in vocal jazz. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
What an Impressive Bunch!!.......2007-01-12
This album has dumbfounded me like none other. Here's why:
I think I'm more up on obscure vocal jazz artists than most. I've been the sole or one of two reviewers on a large number of c.d.'s. But, I had never heard of Vox One, and found this c.d. quite by accident in a "World Records" catalogue, and bought it on a whim.
What an album! In a business lousy with underrated people, this vocal jazz group just might be #1. They are tres impressive, to say the least!
When you think of a vocal jazz ensemble, you tend to think of a group that sings in a barbershop style, only with more jagged rhythms, not so much emphasis on dominant sevenths, and more lyrical lines with less chord-to-chord crashing.
These 5 singers, trained at and teaching at Berklee, can do that. Witness their gorgeous turn on Newley's title track (from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"), their prayerful read of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock," or their soulful rockin' version of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish."
But they do so much more. This c.d. is full of true improvisations, mostly ragas or other third world chants. And they do a blues, "Leave It To Me", that sounds as improvised as anything that ever came out on Blue Note.
The highlight to me, though, is their version of "Simple Gifts." Over a Swahilian chant by the men, the women do a jagged version of the melody of this folk song, until all five meet in harmony toward the end of the phrase. The most original version of this song ever, and I'll bet Copland would agree.
The musicianship of these five is simply unparalled. They sound like they've been singing together for 18 years, which they have. Although there are no truly topflight soloists in the group, they have a beautiful, homogenized sound.
If you like vocal jazz at all, you must get this album. This is one of the best of 2006. RC

magnificent.......2006-12-14
What a wonderful and magnificent jazz pianist. The CD is great. The original pieces OVERTURE and FINALE, really served as bookends for the Broadway tunes. He should be classed with the best of the best.
Oh my.......2003-06-11
I believe this is one of the few times I find myself in agreement with Stanley Crouch. Eric Reed can PLAY! Fifteen seconds into this CD, I realized my afternoon was spoken for.
This CD is a far cry from the avant-garde, though that's certainly not a bad thing. In fact, in the liner notes, Eric Reed slips in a jab at avant-garde by exalting his sidemen for their ability and decision to swing. Furthermore, the choice of music hammers home the traditional stance - all showtunes (another aspect that initially worried me).
However, Eric Reed, without resorting to anything resembling an extended technique or atonality, breathes new life into these otherwise trite and worn-out tunes. He is an improviser like I have not heard in a long time, and is one of the few people I've heard who can make "I Got Rhythm" enjoyable to listen to. His technique on the piano is fantastic, and he never allows flash to override musicality (as opposed to, say, James Carter).
I look forward to buying and hearing his other albums. This one was a treat.
GREAT NEW TALENT.......1999-08-09
ERIC REED HAS THE POTENTIAL OF BEING ANOTHER EROLL GARNER OR GEORGE SHEARING. HE DEMONSTATES GREAT FEELINGS AND HIS MUSICAL INTERPETATIONS ARE FANTASTIC. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE WITH"PURE IMAGINATION". I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE OF HIS RELEASES.
A beautiful album of music reminiscent of Bill Evans........1999-07-09
Eric Reed's album 'Pure Imagination' is a real treat. It's also perfect for playing while you're working on your computer, because the music is upbeat yet personal. Eric's style reminds me of The Bill Evans Trio of the early 60's, and it doesn't get any better than that.
Good, very good.......1999-04-22
He knows the piano and how to get real music out of it. Get your loved one and listen to it any evening or night, you will like it.

A Fine CD.......2000-10-06
This is one of those CDs that I bought because I was perusing some albums by other artists at Amazon.com and I clicked on the "Folks who bought this CD also bought....." option and, boy, am I glad that I did. Julie Budd has a voice far ranging in its quality and passion. Streisand-like in her enunciation, she brings a freshness to the excellent selection of broadway and other standards that are presented on this album. If you are one who likes the sound of other ladies of the pop and theater venue, such as Betty Buckley and Barbara Cook, then go for it, for this CD will receive hours of playing time wherever you enjoy your music.
Pure Pleasure: Pure Singing: Pure Julie.......2000-07-13
When I ordered Julie Budd/Pure Imagination CD I couldn't wait to hear Julie's voice again. It has been some time since her last recording. I remember how entranced I became when she sang.Only a few artists have this rare gift that can demand your attention. When track one started,I heard that magic that Julie Budd possesses. What a performance throughout this entire CD. I am transported into Bliss listening to this fabulous collection ."Looking Through the Eyes of Love "is the most beautiful vocal you will ever hear."Never Never Land" is superb."Where Am I Going" is stunning. I could go on and on with only glowing raves about this wonderful work. What joy to know this gifted artist is sharing her talented soul with the world. Every track will keep you mesmerised. Pure Perfection!
Songs from old soundtrack still get an A!.......2000-06-12
This album is great! I rented the film the Devil and Max Devilin and Julie Budd sang two terrific songs and so I bought the album and I love it. The songs are great pop of the early eighties. I dont know why Julie was not more popular. Her voice along with the great song writing and music make these timely and entertaining.
One of the best albums ever.......1999-04-29
This album has received rhapsodic reviews nationwide. It's really one of the best pop albums ever recorded. The songs represent a treasure trove of great American composition, the orchestrations are gems and Julie Budd soars, bringing to her always excellent voice and technique a new depth of feeling and nuane.
JULIE BUDD RECORDINGS.......1998-11-15
IN THE MID 1970'S, JULIE BUDD (RECORDING UNDER THE NAME "JULIE", ON THE TOM CAT LABEL, CUT A GREAT COVER VERSION OF ' ONE FINE DAY'.( IS IT POSSIBLE TO RECEIVE A COPY OF THAT RECORDING TO ADD TO MY JULIE BUDD COLLECTION?)... PURE IMAGINATION ONCE AGAIN PROVES THE LASTING QUALITIES OVER THE YEARS OF JULIE'S VOICE. SHE 'OWNS' THE SONG, THE SONG DOESN'T OWN HER.

Album Description
Johnny Varro is a magical piano master...Pure Imagination describes the imaginative repertoire that piano giant Varro attacks in his inimitable swinging style. This is creative, swinging music sure to appeal to all lovers of jazz piano!
Johnny Varro is still very much in his musical prime, ranking at the top of swing pianists. He consistently succeeds at keeping the vintage music he loves alive and infectious.
Pure Imagination is not an exercise in nostalgia but, fresh, creative music played by a vital jazz musician.
Customer Reviews:
Another solid -- and splendid -- effort from Varro.......2005-03-05
Johnny Varro is well known to folks who attend Traditional and Dixieland festivals throughout the United States and Europe. But it's a shame he's not better recognized worldwide for the fine -- and varied -- pianist he is. He's far more than just another Dixieland pianist. This trio album (with drummer Ed Metz Jr. and bassist Mark Neuenschwander) shows off his talents for well over an hour on tunes by Kern, Porter, Gershwin, Mandel, Mancini and other fine composers. My favorite is his five-minute-plus version of Leon Russell's "This Masquerade," but there isn't a bad song among the 15 on this Arbors CD. It's a great choice for focused listening, setting a romantic mood or providing background music while you're reading or working. You'll play it over and over.

Customer Reviews:
"A little golden clown".......2005-04-06
There were giants in those days. Two of the tallest giants of musical theatre were Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. I first saw Anthony Newley on TV, when I was a child. It was love at first heart beat. He was a joy, and he was sad; he was an entertainer and a man of sorrow. He had this most extraordinary voice. Rich and deep and his whole being in it. Impossible to describe. These songs from "Willy Wonka" and his and Bricusse's last musical are a treasure trove. They are Newley at his finest.
"Pure Imagination" has never been lovelier. "Cheer Up, Charlie" breaks me in half. "I've Got a Golden Ticket" is a joy, here I go over the moon! And the songs "Little Golden Clown" and "Beautiful Land" (that one from "Roar of the Greasepaint..") just play over and again in my head. Stars and beautiful things and happy dreams. Delicious and delightful.
And to have the songs from the musical "It's A Sad Old Bad Old World" (the working title of the play at least)are heart's delight. We can make up our own plot from them. "It's A Musical World" just brightens the sky to blinding blue. "The Fool Who Dared to Dream" gives that forlorn and so very brave and hopeful hope. The final song, ending in the lyrics.."Daddy, can you bring me some--war" score a life. A mime, a jester, a man of the most marvelous physical interpretations, a star of movies and stage, a master singer/writer/composer. And it's here in these splendid works. An opening song, where a middle aged rock and roller still wants to write his songs for Sandy, fearing the world has passed him by. It has definitely not.
I saw Anthony Newley in "Stop the World..." at the Orpheum in Memphis. To be there, to see him in person, magic. In his white face, this Littlechap who loved too unwisely, who always hurt himself and blamed himself, but who always had a cheery note for all of us who bought his records, saw his films, danced in his music for all of our lives. A little golden clown with a sweet sly bold intense wry sometimes sardonic incredibly handsome face, and a laugh that could not make you help but feel happier. And a voice that got even better as he got older. Richer and purer toned.
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Anthony Newley appearing at long last on CD. Watch out for the tear in his eye, for the way he spun himself into sugar and sometimes gall, the way he made himself a living breathing Everyman, for you will remember him forever. He is gone now, Mr. Anthony Newley, but for those of us lucky enough to have been his fans, he gave us a Once In a Lifetime that lasts forever. All of us fools who also fell in love too unwisely salute him.
Buy his work. Everlasting gobstoppers have never tasted so good.
BRILLIANT NEWLEY TOUR-DE-FORCE~BRAVO ANTHONY!!! .......2004-12-05
Falling in love with Anthony Newley was easy for any of us who were lucky enough to see this incredible legend live in concert as there was never another performer/SINGER/songwriter quite like him! Warm and wide open with alot of heart is his rich and powerful voice that caresses then soars to the sky with breathtaking power and stunning emotional depth plus nobody could write a song quite like Anthony Newley!!! Classics like the athems "What Kind Of Fool Am I?" and "Who Can I Turn To" were always showstoppers in concert and this collection is full of great songs and superb vocal performances that are equal to these masterworks. For some strange reason American Radio would not play Tony's incredible recordings and I found this to be amazing when these two wonderful albums were released as they represent Tony Newley at his absolute peak as a composer and certainally as the ultimate singer of his great songs! Starting with an exhuberent "The Candy Man" then onto a romantic "Pure Imagination", one can see that this is a peerless artist who is going to provide a satisfying musical journey of the highest level...this collection is full of variety and glorious vocals. "Pure Imagination" is played continuously at the spectacular water and light fountain display at "The Grove" which is an exquisite new state of the art shopping complex at the old Farmers Market location in Hollywood, California and this demonstrates the timeless appeal of Anthony Newley's music and this wonderous attraction is a must see for anyone visiting Los Angeles! "Little Golden Clown" is wildly rhymthic and feels like a ride in an amusement park that you don't want to end while "Pop Goes The Weasel" is a fascinating rhythm cooker that has incredible tempo changes that are complex and amazing with a loose and funky vocal. A magnificent vocal make "Cheer Up, Charlie" the ultimate listening experience for those who love a great voice that can soar to the skies yet go to the depths emotionally! "There's No Such Thing As Love" is a gorgeous bittersweet classic that deserves to be a standard such as "Who Can I Turn To?" and would have been in better musical times than the musically tired seventies! A whimsical "The Beautiful Land", "Best Of All Worlds" and "I've Got A Golden Ticket" are all feel good sing along songs that have timeless appeal and sound as fresh and inspired today as when they were recorded some thirty years ago. Ending the "Pure Imagination" set is a magnificent Newley performance from the motion picture "Scrooge" and "I'll Begin Again" is the ultimate riveting showstopper with Anthony Newley at the peak of his remarkable power!!! "Overchewer" is a stunning tour-de-force done with great humor and pathos about a singer who has been around awhile wanting to reach a new generation with his music and this stunner is so infectious that it gives the repeat mode a real workout as the totally unique lyrics and the incredible performance from Anthony Newley are incomparable! "The People Tree" is ear candy at it finest while the pensive title song "Ain't It Funny" is a bluesy riveting winner that should have been a big hit and brought Tony a whole new phase to his brilliant career that would have reached the baby-boomer generation and made him a sensation! A soulful "Me Without You" is another one that would have gone up the charts with any exposure at all...a wild ragtime "The Good Old Bad Old Days" is a great stunner that sounds classic and "It's A Musical World" is the definitive version of this wonderous song that is like that exhilarating ride in an amusement park that you don't want to end...Bravo Tony! Another "Fool" classic is "The Fool Who Dared To Dream" as Tony weaves his magical spell through this amazing athem that once again shows this magnificent singer at his absolute peak. "Easy for You, Captain Candy" is riveting and with a complex arrangement and a soulful vocal that is all over the map and engrossing. Turning away from love, "I Do Not Love You" is a dazzling tour-de-force that showed where Tony was at this point in his life in a brilliant way as does the riveting divorce athem "What Did You Do In The Great War, Daddy" which is another complex masterpiece in a collection that is full of them! Anthony Newley was at the peak of his maturity both vocally and emotionally making this one of the greatest collections ever for anyone who enjoys the Art Of Singing at its finest and remember that this master also wrote the songs!!! Bravo Anthony Newley and we miss you alot...don't miss this thrilling and satisfying collection!!!
