Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Released in 1996, Shack-man may be the quintessential MMW disc. From the opening cover of the traditional spiritual "Is There Anyone Here that Love My Jesus" to the mellow swirls of the closing "Kenny," the emphasis is on the almighty groove; though John Medeski (here pumping everything from Hammond B-3s to toy pianos) and bassist Chris Wood are much flashier players, it's drummer Billy Martin who really gets (and keeps) the party going. The laid-back, sunshine-and-palm-trees vibe of Hawaii (where Shack-man was recorded) creeps into some of the tracks, but the overall feel is more New Orleans than Waikiki. --Dan Epstein

From the Label
The material for their latest release, SHACK-MAN, was mostly composed and developed on the road during the last year in which they played over 200 shows. The band's third Gramavision release and fourth album overall was recorded in their tropical sanctuary, a shack in the remote jungles of Hawaii. “There's a certain vibe we get into musically in Hawaii that we don't get into on the road," says Medeski. "It was always our dream to make a record there. The sound of the Shack is amazing.”

With ten new compositions and a remarkable revamping of the traditional “Is There Anybody Here That Love My Jesus,” MMW emerge as America's favorite groove band. Although critics have compared their unique musical hybrid to the soulful organ jazz of Jimmy Smith, the cosmic voyages of Sun Ra and Miles Davis in the 70's, these versatile keyboard, bass, and drum virtuosos hew just as closely to the dance floor pop and street savvy funk of Booker T & the MG's, Sly and the Family Stone, and James Brown. The instant accessibility and musical depth of such Shack-man tunes as “Dracula,” “Bubblehouse,” and “Strance of the Spirit Red Gator” invite music fans of every stripe into the Shack, spacious home to the universal groove.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2007-02-23

This is undoubtedly one of the best works by MMW. I think this cd should be owned by anyone who is into Medeski Martin & Wood, because it really kind of shows you what they are all about.

4 out of 5 stars The groove never stops.......2007-02-04

This is my third MMW CD, and I cant really pick a favorite, but I like this one a lot. The funky B3 always sounds so great and soulful. The cool grooves really set a mood the puts me in my own soulful mood. There are quite a bit of styles here, I hear some hiphop along with the funk stuff. The best tracks are "Is There Anybody Here That Love My Jesus" and "Bubblehouse". "Friday Afternoon in the Universe is also a good album.

5 out of 5 stars groovy, funky, and out of this world.......2005-07-30

this was problably the 3rd mmw cd that i listened to and this was the cd that made me realize had amazing they are..
this album is the first one where mmw takes it to a more electronic, groovy sounding kind of level..

if you have just gotten into mmw, this is a cd that must be bought..

A DEFINITE HEAD BOPPER

4 out of 5 stars another great MMW cd.......2005-07-12

What more can be said than another great cd from start to end with the awesome song bubblehouse stuck in the middle. If you get a chance to see them live, do, you wont regret the decision, they are one of the best jazz jam bands around.

5 out of 5 stars Avant-garde jazz disguised as greasy funk?.......2004-04-04

I purchased this CD after a friend turned me on to a live recording of this material plus the fact that I Love A Go-Go by John Scofield. This music is a brilliant blend of jazz and greasy funk. If you are like me you will first be turned on by the eternal greasy groove and the quirky keyboard lines. Some of this album is jam and a little repetitive but it cooks so well that you don't seem to care. After I got past the funk and started really listening a little deeper I found a sense of great interplay and structure that develop in some of the tunes.
Billy Martin is one of my favorite drummers but he could frustrate most bass players by pushing and pulling the beat like a rubberband. Give credit to Chris Woods' since of feel, it can't be beat. John Medeski is......John Medeski! Who else could overdrive a clavinet through a wah pedal until it feedbacks? There are avant-garde moments throughout this disc but they're not overwhelming (like free jazz).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable piano talent,.......2007-06-08

This CD is a must for anyone who loves boogie-woogie, blues, early r'n'b piano and also truly great talent. Which is what Amos Milburn was, a great, great talent. This is very likely the best CD available on Amos Milburn's music. His piano playing and especially his voice was extremely smooth and cool. But he could rock with the best of them. "Chicken Shack Boogie" and "Down the Road Apiece" are great examples. I highly recommend this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very Recommended.......2005-08-30

This is probably the best Amos Milburn collection currently available. The addition of this set fills a pre-Rock 'n' Roll R&B void in my personal collection. Amos Milburn is one of the important bridges between Blues, Boogie-Woogie, R&B and early Rock. I'm very pleased with the music, the selections, and the packaging of this 2-CD set. I'm mostly pleased with sound quality of the set, but some cuts do come with some pops and clicks. Given the age of this music (recorded during the late '40s and early '50s) when most "race music" of this period was relegated to independent labels and not given the optimum engineering priorities afforded the major pop labels, the sound is quite good. I believe the UK's Proper Records used the best sources available to master these recordings (some not available in the U.S. in any format in years), so I tolerate the inherent hiss and other ocassional surface noises with the music. I give 5 stars for the completeness and packaging of this set. Casual listeners may find some of the selections over the 2 CDs a bit repetitive and maybe overkill, but serious fans like myself will enjoy the breadth of the overview that a single disc can't cover.

4 out of 5 stars A good value........2003-06-13

Amos Milburn is a boogie woogie legend. He also deserves credit as being a real founding father of rock n' roll. This double cd set is a good buy. The reason I gave this one a 4 instead of a 5 rating is because there are a few tedious straight blues numbers, only suitable for a real collector of period material. "Birmingham Bounce" is a hard rocker and make this cd worth getting alone, but you'll also find the ones that made him famous like "Down The Road a Piece" (covered by chuck Berry) and "Chicken Shack Boogie". This set's "better than chicken fried in bacon grease".

5 out of 5 stars Stan Webb " Live ".......2003-06-30

This album is a true representation of Stan Webb's Chicken Shack live set even today, I have seen them as recently as June 2003 and the set still contains some of this material. This is one of the best live recordings I have come across and is a mix of true blues, and rock / blues. The guitar work from both Stan the man and Gary Davis is a pleasure to hear, supported by a strong bass and drum section that is rock solid all the way through.
This album is well worth buying as an introduction to a very sadly overlooked guiter hero who's explosive and soulful style equals most of the top guitar names, also this is a live act well worth seeing for pure power blues at its best.

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice Album.......1998-12-13

This is a very nice album by Stan Webb's Chicken Shack. It serves as an introduction to the band, since it contains some old classics, along with blues songs. And if you like a nice guitar work, you'll enjoy Stan Webb's guitar playing. He's an almost unknow guitar hero, and it's a shame that he's not at the guitarist's Pantheon with Clapton, Green and the other british blues players. Listen to it!
