Editorial Reviews
Saxophonist Ken Vandermark released two excellent LPs this year--Target or Flag, a barn burner featuring his Chicago-based group, the Vandermark 5--and Stumble, his collaboration with Sweden's AALY Trio. Vandermark is a player with explosive moves and a surprising vocabulary of honks, blats, and horn chatter. Stumble creeps through the shadows like the soundtrack to a noir thriller. Other times, the record is convulsed by Vandermark's horn fits. A player of many moves--clucking, coughing, roaring, shrieking, wheezing--Vandermark is a player always on the edge, always full of surprise, and on Stumble he delivers the year's best avant-garde jazz: bracing, funny, and sharp. --S. On Stumble tenor saxophonist Ken Vandermark and the AALY Trio (featuring Mats Gustafsson on tenor, fluteophone, and flute; Peter Janson on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums) lurch out of the gate with a creaky, spindle-legged tune built from shadowy drum and bass rumble and spy movie horns. It's a wonderfully evocative opener for an album built with a stylish taste for film noir moods and evocative sound textures. That's not to say that Stumble is background music. On a number of cuts, Vandermark and Gustafsson trade hurricane gusts and duke it out, horn to horn, in a great frenzy of squall, scream, and screech. After a few listens, those windy moments reveal sympathetic playing and (gasp!) real conversational interplay. An indie-jazz masterpiece. --S. Duda

Twenty-eight years after her major label debut, Emmylou Harris remains as vital, electric, and bold an artist as the young woman who moved to Nashville in the early `70s. But where she once carried on Gram Parsons' vision of wedding hardcore country to contemporary rhythms, for the past decade Harris has explored an acoustic sonic landscape rooted in folk, yet set apart by driving percussion, world-music elements, and gauzy and ethereal vocals. Stumble Into Grace follows the Grammy-winning Red Dirt Girl with an even bleaker and beautiful collection of songs, almost all of which she wrote or co-wrote. Two songs concern themselves with social commentary, the slant-eyed "Time In Babylon" (co-written with Jill Cuniff of Luscious Jackson), poking a stick in the eye of designer fashions and TV culture, and the affecting "Lost Unto This World" framing scenes of female genocide throughout the ages. Yet much of the program has an Emily Dickinson quality about it, as if told from the point of view of a woman looking back on her past life, realizing it is almost over, and finding herself nearly crazed from lost opportunity, lost loves, and loneliness. Even her elegy to June Carter Cash, "Strong Hand," where Linda Ronstadt guests, centers on the "miracle of how one soul finds another." A poetic spirituality lifts up even the most hopeless lyric, as do the otherworldly background vocals (Julie Miller, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, and Jane Siberry) and producer Malcolm Burn's haunting instrumental touches (a Cuban churanga and a deftly-placed accordion, which offers a sympathetic wheeze). At 57, Harris may be square in the middle stages of chronological life, but as a performer, she is still in the forefront of genre-transcending artistry. --Alanna NashAlbum Description

"...another long night to be alone..".......2007-04-07
The longer Emmylou continues,the better she gets.This,in my opinion, is the best album that she has made and the main reason for that is ,since she wrote most of the songs,we hear her talking right from her soul. It takes a couple of listens before the full impact of these songs really hits you.
While I've often said that Emmylou can take any song and make it her own;
it is a sign of a great artist to do this as we have seen with Cash,Ray Charles,Nana Moscouri,Sinatra,just to name a few.
When a great artist is finally able to take off on their own,with their own music and ideas ;then we see the real greatness emerge. The latest work by Johnny Cash hit us like a bolt of thunder and here we see the same with Emmylou.
Someone once asked Picasso how long it took him to do one of his paintings.His answer was "about fourty years." I think the same could be said about the songs on this album. It takes a whole lot of living to reach into one's soul and bring this sort of thing out for all of us to see and feel.
There are all kinds of studio and industry songwriters who can crank out an endless stream of songs for about any topic and for any singer;but they can't do the kind of thing that we see Emmylou doing here. It has to come from the soul and that can't be done by someone else for her.
When we listen to Hank Williams sing "Your Cheating Heart" ,Dolly Parton sing "Coat of Many Colors", Loretta Lynn sing "Coal Miner's Daughter",and Kris Kristofferson sing "Sunday Morning Coming Down";we are hearing songs they wrote themselves and from their heart and soul and above all,personal experience.
Line after line as Emmylou sings these songs, she reaches out and is able to captivate us and get right to our emotions.
When she sings;
"We make our own Heaven,our own Hell,
Trying to get across to theother side"
We are seeing the work of real greatness.
It is hard to single out one song over another;but when she sings "Strong Hand" I can visualize Johnny and June listening to Emmylou and enjoying it to no end.
Yes,Emmylou,we can hear you now. Our only hope is that we will continue to hear you for years to come. Thanks.
Stumbling Toward Ecstasy .......2005-12-24
The new direction all comes together here. Beautiful!.......2005-02-09
One reviewer said Emmylou had a two note range. I think she has had some voice problems in the past and certainly her voice has changed but her voice has always had a unique imperfect quality to it. I saw her in concert last spring and let me tell you, she can still carry it off live! Knowing her voice troubles and not being thrilled with her TV performances over the years, I was not expecting the high quality live performance that she delivered. It was great! And the occasional voice cracking and the whispers are real and raw. It's truth.
Also, her old standards didn't even really seem to fit into the concert. They were just kind of plunked down in the middle of the concert (fans do still want to hear them). Her performance of "Together Again" was top notch. She rocked "Born to Run". Believe me she can still sing. But I love this new direction Emmylou has gone and loved that she focused on alot of new stuff, especially this CD when I saw her. She is keeping her music so fresh and interesting that I don't find myself pining away for her old stuff.
I know I haven't talked about the actual CD much. I can't really even describe it. It's just plain beautiful. It's an "experience". To get my full experience I pass "Time in Babylon" and "Jupiter's Rising". While the songs are ok, in the midst of this CD they are clunkers that I prefer to pass by so I can keep within the same frame of mind and musical experience as the other songs.
Stunning!.......2005-01-04
Little Bird is the best track. I love the instrumentation.
Overall, the songs are uplifting and angelic, just like the beautiful cover art. People have been complaining about her vocal range and her songwriting. I personally don't see it. For a woman in her fifties, she has a beautiful highly textured voice. So what if she can't hit the high notes anymore! As for her songwriting abilities, I think it is refreshing to hear simple songs that aren't trashy and sexual like much of the music put out today.
Beautiful album by a beautiful woman! Promise me that you will stumble into grace and buy this album

The composers Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu might not be the names that first spring to mind when love songs are mentioned, yet this fascinating collection gives us a taste of what delights we have been missing. They range from seven Moravian folk songs, collected by Janácek at the turn of the century, to songs written by Martinu in the U.S. in 1942. There's also early Martinu--including songs he collected in Slovakia in 1920--plus the world-premiere recording of Songs for a Friend of My Country, a cycle he wrote in France in 1940 on his way to America. All of these songs are of interest in giving us another aspect of each composer's work; most have much more to offer. Many are achingly lovely, especially those by Dvorák--including his Op. 2, a reworking of four songs from a cycle he had written almost 20 years earlier, and Love Songs, a revision of eight songs from the same cycle. "Good night, my darling," from his 1886 cycle In Folk Tone, is worth the price of this CD alone. Czech mezzo Magdalena Kozená, who put together the program, sings with pure, attractive tone. Graham Johnson is her excellent accompanist. --Richard FawkesCustomer Reviews:
On the Subject of Intelligent and Sensitive Recitals.......2005-05-19
LOVE SONGS is a tastefully selected panorama of lesser-known songs by Kozená's fellow countrymen (Czech) Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu. And while many of the Dvorák and Janácek songs have been occasionally heard in recitals, the Martinu "Songs for a Friend of My Country", an exquisitely beautiful work written in 1940, here receives its World Premiere recording. Kozená's voice is in prime condition for these songs and she is ably accompanied by pianist Graham Johnson. The special flavor of these Slavic emotions and songs has rarely been so well captured.
But over and above the beauty of Kozená's performance of these neglected masterpieces shines the glow of her sensitive programming. Recordings such as these are rare and should be included in the libraries of those who appreciate the lieder genre. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 05

A stunning burst onto the world stage.......2001-12-17
Kozena's voice is sheer delight. She does have resonances in her voice which are reminiscent of her compatriot, Lucia Popp, but is certainly a mezzo - although she has chosen her repertoire well so we hear no strain at the top. Her low resonances are delightful and consistent with her head voice. To compare Kozena's voice to that of the late diva (Popp), it is more pure, more consistent in tone from top to bottom, and doesn't have so much of the `squeezey' quality which Popp used to great effect in evincing the passion of her characters. Kozena can empty her voice of vibrato or let it out rich and full, and uses all her vocal resources to great effect in contrasting the individual songs. She has astoundingly mature lieder-singer's technique for such a young singer.
This recording rightly won a Gramophone award this year. Kozena deserves all the accolades she receives for this - doubtless all listeners will develop their own favourites from these delightful miniatures.
Wonderful songs, and a singer with great potential.......2000-10-08
