Smokin' Family Performance.......2007-05-11

As if Dave Brubeck wasn't already a monster talent, his sons? The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree here. By luck I got to see them live in '73 at the Waikiki Shell, front row, center. One of the most astonishing shows I've ever seen. The drummer Danny was 18 years old and played this little black Fibes kit and just ripped our heads off! Chris and Darius had equal genius on their instruments and Dave couldn't be more proud. Blue Rondo and Circadian are my faves but I agree with the other reviewer here that "Thank You" is one of the most beautiful piano pieces ever. Thrilled that the CD finally showed up, my vinyl's shot!

Long-awaited CD release.......2005-10-28

I first heard this album at its original release. I'd been familiar with Brubeck from his earlier performances, but was completely unprepared for this. If you're already a Brubeck fan, you'll love the incredible performance of Blue Rondo a la Turk: electric violin and a rocking harmonica solo. Brubeck's in fine form as well.

But the core reason for buying this CD; the last track, "Thank You". It is literally the most beautiful piece of solo piano music I have ever heard. Period. If you can imagine Chopin fused with the best jazz piano you've ever heard, you'll come close. (But just buy the CD and listen to it. You'll see.)

The other tracks on this CD are certainly worthy and well-performed, but they're like the other mountains around Everest: comparatively, just places that aren't quite as high. I'm giving it five stars because of the two unequaled perfomances. It's not often that I'd recommend buying a CD for just one track, but for "Thank You", I can't say enough.

Album Description

This project started as an attempt to celebrate the centenary of Rev. Gary Davis's birth, but turned into something more like herding cats. We now present to you twenty musical examples that include his early Greenville partner, Willie Walker, from whom Blind Gary undoubtly learned a few tricks; his earliest known student, Blind Boy Fuller, whose commercial success virtually transformed the post-depression blues world; and eighteen recent entries, who were either students of his, or who were taught by someone who was.

The people on this CD are intened to be representative, but not exhaustive. This is because Rev. Davis was as much a teacher as he was a player, and he taught whomsoever presented themselves to be taught, for however long they were in his presence. If we had an unlimited budget and all the CDs in the world, we could present ten times as many people. When I first saw Davis in 1963, I flipped, I would assume the same holds true for all the performers whose works are reproduced here.

Half the numbers were taken from existing CDs, including the two 78s. The other half were newly minted by the performers, and may turn up on their own CDs as time goes on. An effort was made to be as inclusive as possible: we have male and female, black and white, gentle and Jew, Canadian and American, and while most of the performers are living, some have followed Rev. Davis from this vale tears. Rev. Davis did not discriminate. His influence was broad, far reaching and lifelong. But most of all, it was personal. Of the twenty performers on this recording, the majority knew him well, a couple knew him peripherally, and the remainder would have sought him out had they had the chance.

An Amazing Journey.......2006-03-10

I worked in the Balkans off and on for more than 5 years, and actually lived in a portion of the former Yugoslavia doing humanitarian work for five months last year. Balkan music facinates me, so when I heard my local NPR station preview an upcoming segment featuring a musician with the surname of Ivanovic I knew I had to pay close attention. What I heard on that short segment moved me to immediately find his CD and order it. I have listened to almost nothing else since it arrived. The guitar work is powerful yet elegant, the pieces diverse while connected by a musical thread of the Balkan reality. When I hear the music is takes me back to so many of the deeply mystical and spiritual aspects of Balkan life, but the offerings are simultaneously fresh and vibrant. This is music in which to lose one's self -- to think, to reflect, and to dream. I hope to see Ivanovic perform in person, and I intend to collect as much of his recorded music as possible.

This is an album that I listen to on a regular basis. The musicianship on this album speaks for itself. The music contained on this album can and will put you in a very relaxed mood. This is great and beautiful music by two of the most talented guitarist on the planet.

Few things can be described as beautiful, but this CD defines the word. Each melody pulses with life and feeling. Listening to this CD, I fall into a kind of dream world.
Compared to their other CD, it's just as intense, but the arrangements are more complex. It doesn't get quite as crazy as Macedonian Blues, but I am still surprised by the originality and beauty each time I hear it.

I absolutely love this work by two extremely talented guitarists! The music evokes elements of jazz, classical, and folk, so for eclectic music fans, this is a keeper.
