The Smashing Pumpkins' greatest-hits album, Rotten Apples, traces the band's evolution (or devolution, depending on your feelings about the band's radical sonic shift in the mid-'90s) from its early days to its status among the kings of alt rock. For fans of the Pumpkins' beginnings as a tripped-out indie/art rock act, Apples opens with some of the band's strongest material. "Siva" and "Rhinoceros" (from Gish, the Pumpkin's first--and arguably best--album) seamlessly mixed dream pop with noisy goth-rock as prime examples of the Pumpkins' early '90s sound. Apples also showcases three stellar tracks ("Cherub Rock," "Today," and "Disarm") from Siamese Dream, the Pumpkins' breakout album. This disc makes the band's mid-'90s directional swing obvious, though, starting with "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," the aggressive alt rock/alt metal concoction released on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Fans of songs like "Zero," "Tonight, Tonight," and "The Everlasting Gaze" will be happy to know that pretty much every cage-rattling hit made it to this disc, along with the previously unreleased dream pop track "Real Love" and an untitled new track (that sounds a lot like the Siamese Dream-era Pumpkins) to round out the mix. --Jennifer MaerzCustomer Reviews:

But when I bought the album I was a little dissipointed too see that there were some songs missing.Such as "Spaceboy", "Thirty-Three", "By Starlight", "Starla" and "Try,Try,Try".It might have also been cool if they added the "1979" Moby remix.
But all in all the album is awesome.I suggest people who are new too Smashing Pumpkins to buy this album before they go and get their other albums. If you like greatist hits I suggest you get MCATIS and Adore. But I think you won't regret getting this.

After a five-year absence, Apples in Stereo have returned with a sprawling and lush masterpiece. Their founding principle of the DIY approach to recording has remained in place, but the nearly 15 years of technological progress has made such ways of working yield significantly more robust sounds. Robert Schneider's songs have always harked back to the pop artistry of Brian Wilson and Jeff Lynne, as well as such near contemporaries as Pavement. New Magnetic Wonder offers a more lush sweep of sound. It's varied, dazzling, and full of surprises. There's the keyboard-based pop of "Same Old Drag," the hypnotic muscle of "Sunndal Song" (sung by drummer Hilarie Sidney, who's recently departed to work with her own band), and the sprawling, four-part "Beautiful Machine." Depending on who's listening and what song they're hearing, there are many different ways to describe this band. Ultimately, they gently demand that you take them on their own terms, rewarding handsomely all those who make the glorious plunge. --David GreenbergerCustomer Reviews:

Ask anyone who's attended one and they'll tell you: there's nothing quite as colorful--and emotionally melodramatic--as a Greek wedding. Based on Winnipeg actress-comedian Nia Vardalos's one-woman show and brought to the screen by Rita Wilson and husband Tom Hanks, the film tells (with some parallels to Moonstruck) the story of a thirtysomething Greek spinster for whom falling in love with a "Xeno" (non-Greek) is surely the easiest part of a wedding that more than lives up to its billing. The film's soundtrack perfectly captures those swirling clouds of ethnic and romantic tension. Its first half largely sets up the rich cultural atmosphere with a lively sampling of traditional Greek folk music (featuring selections by Alexandros Xenofontos, John Tsifliklis, Eman, Nick Kutsukos, Daghan Baydur, and Richard Thomas), while the score proper from Alexander Janko (with help from Chris Wilson) slyly segues from similar fare ("Moose Caca," "Yasoo," "Yiayia") to more traditional orchestral film music. That sometimes electro-pastoral, compelling music has parallels with Rachel Portman's and offers the collection a sense of emotional completion. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Product Description
"The House of Apples & Eyeballs" is not a split, but a year-long, full-length collaboration by both bands. The Octopus Project is known and loved for their uncategorizable broken-guitars-meet-samplers-meet-drums-meet-drum machines sound, while the musical island of Black Moth Super Rainbow would rather play their songs in the woods and not let you know if their gear is broken or working just fine. Holding hands from Austin to Pittsburgh, they set out to create one of the wilder pop records of the year. For anyone familiar with both bands, may you find yourself at peace with this dream record. But know that not all is as it seems, and the challenge of figuring out which band played which parts may sometimes be impossible. While a couple tracks did make it to the record in their original, one-band form, most were passed back and forth for several rounds of dismemberment, rearrangement, and augmentation. The result overflows with sonic treats: cut-up beats and vocoder melodies collide with huge, distorted riffs. A theremin orchestra descends into layered steel guitars before all is dissolved in a wash of hazy synths. The Octopus Project appears courtesy of Peek-A-Boo Records. They have wowed audiences in 2006 at Coachella, and were named one of Rolling Stone's breakout bands of SXSW. They will soon be going into the studio to record their very highly anticipated third album in 2007. Black Moth Super Rainbow lives on Graveface Records, and although known as somewhat of an enigma, has come out of the forest in 2006 to play at the request of bands like Of Montreal and The Black Angels. They have been recording their third full length album that will be released when the time is just right.Customer Reviews:

Oft-sampled electronic pop pioneers the Silver Apples released two exceptionally influential, off-kilter records in 1968 and '69, then apparently vanished. The group was formed in New York City in the psychedelic heyday of 1967 by drummer Danny Taylor and protosynth player Simeon, who quaintly named his hand-built instrument the Simeon. Taylor was a powerhouse of polyphony and his looping, loping playing is the engine that drives the Apples' experimental music, characterized by snippets of found sound, weird and warbly high-pitched singing, stray banjos, and--most importantly--the battering, buzzing, bleeping beauty of the Simeon synth. The two albums are a bizarre, sincere mixture of avant-garde sensibilities, pop melodies, folk-psyche song structures, overwrought poetry, and hefty percussion. It is difficult-to-describe, signature music that ranks high alongside the most forward-thinking avant-prog. The group got back together in the mid-'90s, spurred on by the enthusiasm that many acts showed for their music (the group has been name-checked and more by Spacemen 3, Low, and Stereolab). But as is often the case, the reunion records just don't quite cut it--this one CD has everything you need. Lazy electronic musicians are encouraged to sample the heck out of this band; you won't be the first. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:
you need to hear this if you like today's electronica.......2007-05-15
Ye gads! my mind is melting.............2007-04-13
I was 14 in '69 when I bought That Shiny "Silver Apples" L.P. in a cut-out bin at Federal's Dept. Store.
Along with:
Calliope "Steamed",
Ultimate Spinache "Behold & See" and
Linn County "Proud Flesh Soothseer"
I don't think my musical tastes ever recovered from the impact.
This was, and still is, an excursion into bold and imaginative relms of musical possibilities, that unfortunately dried up on a commercial level with few exceptions for decades. AOR musical directors dictated by corporate bottom line and not "Art" quashed the avant gard and sent it underground .
Where this marvelous CD remains available only as an import, European tastes and demand, dictate this.
Thankfully someone (MCA Universal) had the forsight to combine these two L.P.s into a single release.
Electronic sound, as yet unheard of, combined with creative pecussions and unique vocal stylization ( can anyone say Syd Barrett, Marc Bolin?).
Then by Their 2nd release "Contact" adding Banjos to the mix!?!?
And the amazing thing is...it works!!! Brilliant!
Granted not top 40 material or something you'd put on at a party,
but nontheless, an Important intregal step in musical evolution, that ushered in accessable electronica.
Treat yourself to some of the oddest and most intriguing music of the late 60's with this package.
Oh, and here's a tip:
Don't just spin it once and judge, as with most ecclectic tastes, a cursery skim will not do.
It's an acquired taste, that has sat maturing for nearly 40 years.
Enjoy the trip.....
Took a few listens .......2006-11-16
I also strongly recomend that you check out the album that Simeon did with the band, The Alchemist, entitled "Simeon and the Alchemist".
Way up on my list of favorite albums........2006-11-04
Contact is by far my favorite album by Silver Apples, it's also the cd that has an edgier sound to it.
With songs like the beautiful "I Have Known Love", the tastefully different "Confusion", and "Ruby" which both have a Banjo part that is light and complimentary to their signature sound. Then there's my favorite song "Fantasies". I am a complete sucker for great drumming, which is one of the reasons I love this entire cd so much, but the drumming in the song "Fantasies" makes for a very powerful, intense, and infectious song. Plus with Simeon guiding Danny, and the random lyrics it somehow tops everything off and makes this song pop out to me the most.
The Self titled part of this album is also so wonderful. Still holds great drumming, but the songs have a lighter vibe to them. Both cds in this album balance each other out very nicely, without one having more of a "Silver Apples" sound than the other.
"Dancing Gods" is another song that has that intense drumming. Although the drumming has a more tribal style to it, which sounds amazing, Cause Danny is great at pulling off so many different drumming styles.
The ocsillation part in "Lovefingers" are very fun, with great drumming styles lightly playing in the background with the bass ocsillators.
Overall I would recommend this album to any open minded music fan/musician/ect. Any creative drummers need to own this album. Silver Apples has such an amazing sound and style that, today, sounds ahead of time.
Got unwanted guests, put this CD on........2006-08-30
My personal top 5 albums to put on to get rid of 'unwanted guest' or to clear out the house of unwanted party idiots:
1. "Berlin" (1973) by Lou Reed
2. "Silver Apples/Contact" (1968, 1969)
3. "Unfinished Music #2: Life With The Lions" (1969) by John Lennon & Yoko Ono
4. "Electronic Sound" (1968) by George Harrison
5. "The First Annual Report Of Throbbing Gristle" (1975)

The great thing about being part of a musical collective is that not only can you draw from the work of your peers for inspiration, you can rely on your peers themselves. As part of Elephant 6, the Apples in Stereo are involved in a symbiotic relationship with such like-minded bands as Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel. For example, Apples frontman Robert Schneider produced a previous OTC album and OTC controller William Cullen Hart designed the artwork for the Apples' new record, Her Wallpaper Reverie. So it's no surprise that Wallpaper sounds like a more cohesive sequel to OTC's mind-bending Black Foliage. What is surprising is just how vast an improvement it is over the Apples' last sugary pop disc, Tone Soul Evolution. A psychedelic excursion threaded together with chiming, repetitive interludes, the album blends the styles of Revolver-era Beatles with those of Smile-era Beach Boys, resulting in a shimmering pop cocktail that's both crafty and infectious. Only two flaws: the interludes become a tad annoying and the album is only 27 minutes long, leaving the listener begging for more. Fortunately, most CDs have a repeat-play button. --Jon WiederhornAlbum Description
1999 album, the follow-up their successful '97 album, 'Tone Soul Evolution'. A return to the fuzzy rock sound of their earlier releases while taking giant steps forward, it contains 15 tracks.Customer Reviews:

Good songs but too few.......2004-10-02
Too much noodling, not enough songcraft.......2004-06-28
On one hand, you have the Apples' trademark ability to synthesize 60s pop down to absolutely brilliant and tasty pop nuggets. "The Shiney Sea" floats by like a lone cloud on a sunny day, "Ruby" almost effortlessly manages to sound both like early Beatles and create a song as catchy as anything the Beatles did in their early days, and there's, of course, the brilliant "Strawberryfire," which almost manages to outdo Lennon's psychadelic sound experiments like "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."
However, with every brilliant song such as this, there is the horrendous filler. I rather like psychadelia, but the stopgap tracks between songs are pure directionless noodling. None of them start anywhere and most of them end nowhere, leaving you to scratch your head. And that says nothing about the concept of this CD either. Who in their right mind would actually RECORD a CD about what happens when you take a few too many bonghits and stare at the wallpaper for a while?
If The Apples in Stereo had managed to cut the terrible filler tracks, we'd have a lovely 7 song EP as opposed to the bloated 15 track one they released instead. As such, you're going to have to take the good with the bad on this one if you're going to buy it. Otherwise, check out some of the Apples' other CDs first.
