Shortly before Kiss embarked on its nostalgic, highly profitable reunion tour of 1996, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley seemed to be planning a more contemporary route to world domination. Their album Carnival of Souls was recorded in 1995, prior to original Kissmen Ace Frehley's and Peter Criss's reentry into the band, and it sounds more like Seattle revisited than "Detroit Rock City." The album's lumbering rhythms, and ex-guitarist Bruce Kulick's quavering string bends, are reminiscent of Badmotorfinger-era Soundgarden, and Stanley's vocals wobble and wail, stopping just short of rocketing into a high-pitch falsetto. As derivative as it is, however, Carnival of Souls is pretty gripping. Sure, the ballads are clunkers, but many of the other tracks are undeniably compelling, alternating between atmospheric verses and bracing, teen-spirited choruses. It's just a shame that Kiss's renewed emphasis on recapturing the box office with 20-year-old material will probably prevent the band from growing and evolving even further. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars Great Attempt At Seatle Sound and Great Kiss Album.......2007-07-04

This album is an underated gem. It captures a different side of Kiss that has never been captured before, dark and gritty. I wish they would've continued this course. A lot of the songs on tis album put me in the mindset of Alice In Chains or Sound Garden, which Kiss pulled off this much better in my opinon. If you like Kiss dark and heavy then go ahead and indulge in this treat

4 out of 5 stars Carnival of Souls = The Elder of the 90s.......2007-06-07

I really like this album. The problem is maybe it's too good and too different from classic Kiss. Sound familiar? Yes, just like The Elder. The music isn't bad, just very different for Kiss. And this time, it's very very heavy and it does sound derivitive of Alice in Chains or Soundgarden. My favorite is Paul's "Jungle". And that one received a lot of airplay at least on stations where I lived in PA. Most of Gene's songs are quite good. "Hate" is like a faster "Unholy". But I like "Childhood's End" - that sounds like a distant relative to "Goin Blind". "Rain" and "Master and Slave" are very cool hard rockin songs from Paul. Had the reunion not happened, I'm not sure how this album would have really been received. It's a shame it didn't come out in like 93 or 94 when it could have had a shot. But by 1997, everyone was Kiss Make-up crazy and this record got lost in the shuffle. But I give them kudos for trying something creative and really experimenting.

4 out of 5 stars Industrial Grunge Ahoy.......2007-05-11

This is possibly KISS' most ummm...... "interesting" albums yet. They've decided to try to blend their music for the style that was popular at the time, which was Grunge, Industrial, and Punk. They do manage to get some of their classic sounds in, but not much. This earns them three stars, plus another star for featuring Bruce Kulick on lead vocals on the track "I Walk Alone".

5 out of 5 stars Black sheep can still shine.......2007-03-29

I remember seeing this album in stores when it first came out...I had gotten into Kiss about 5 years prior and actually had the song "Detroit Rock City" stuck in my head all the time. I had not yet heard much from KISS aside from early albums which captivated me. I looked at this album and it was almost scary...the band looked so edgy and had this hint of evil..then I looked at the track list and put the album back on the shelf. I walked home with thoughts of the album but it faded from memory.

about a year or 2 later, my uncle gave me his copy of Revenge and after listening to it I asked myself. "Why are they doing stuff like Psycho Circus right now when there is stuff like THIS out there?!"

fast forward to about 2004 and my friend let me borrow his copy of Carnival of souls following a long discussion about KISS and their music. He said that if I liked Revenge, I would probably like COS. I took it home and after listening to it, I actually got angry with the band. I thought "How could they record something so dark and not promote it?" From the opening screaches of "Hate" to the twisted rhythms of "Childhood's End" to the Premonition of a song known as "I walk alone", This album was a masterpiece. I strongly feel that the direction the last 2 non-makeup albums were taking could have lead to a resurgence that could have been even bigger than the return of the makeup.

Anybody who liked Revenge will almost undoubtably like this album.

As dusk settles over the carnival, the once-festive midway begins to exude an eerie sense of menace. Pale green lights eminate from somewhere in the distance, where the murmur of voices echo amidst haunting music and other, more unsettling sounds. Dark rumors of missing children and drifters have followed the carnival from town to town, and though you are well aware of the dangers of tresspassing here, you cannot resist the temptation to explore the circus grounds after dark. Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the circus of the strange, the sideshow of the sinister and the theatre of the bizarre... Cast your eyes upon cruel oddities of nature and behold monstrous creatures from the depths of the abyss. Hear the dark wisdom of gypsy soothsayers as they unveil things yet to come. Marvel with awe and dismay at unbelievable death-defying acts that teter on the very brink of doom. Leave the mundane world behind, for those who visit this festival of phantasms, are never the same again. Step this way, there’s no turning back...

3 out of 5 stars NOX ARCANA - 2 GUYS, A COUPLE OF INSTRUMENTS LYING AROUNG AND A COMPUTER.......2007-06-29

CHEESEY SPOKEN INTERLUDES ASIDE, THIS NOX ARCANA (WHATEVER THAT MEANS) IS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE. HOWEVER, I GET A SENSE THAT MUCH OF THIS IS ALL COMPUTERIZED ORCHESTRATION, IT DOES HALF-HEARTEDLY WHAT IT SETS OUT TO ACCOMPLISH, WHICH IS ULTIMATELY TO CREATE AN OVERWHELMINGLY PITCH BLACK MOOD. THOUGH THIS TYPE OF THING HAS BEEN DONE MAY A TIME OVER (GLENN DANZIG'S BLACK ARIA & EERIE VON'S UNEASY LISTENING FOR EXAMPLE) IT STILL LEAVES THE LISTENER WANTING MORE IN THE END. I DO HAVE A FEELING THAT IF YOU'VE HEARD ONE N.A. ALBUM, YOU'VE HEARD THEM ALL, THIS IS PROBABLY DUE TO THE FACT THAT AS SOON AS YOU FIND YOURSELF ENGROSSED IN THEIR BLANKET OF HAUNTING DRAMA, THE TUNE IS OVER. I THINK THEY WOULD BE MORE EFFECTIVE IF THE TRACKS WERE IN EXCESS OF 6 MINUTES OR MORE RATHER THAN AVERAGING 2 MIN 45 SEC. I'VE READ OTHER REVIEWS WHO CLAIM THE SAME THING (THESE "GAMER" FOLKS). THOUGH I WOULD NOT CONSIDER THIS EXCELLENT, IT'S OVERALL PRETTY SOLID. I THINK I AM CONVINCED AND CURIOUS ENOUGH TO CHECK OUT ANOTHER RELEASE BY THESE GUYS. 3 1/2 STARS.

5 out of 5 stars First Time Was The Charmer.......2007-04-21

This was my first time to explore this "spooky" genre in music, as well as the first exposure to Nox Arcana--and, my, what a darkly seductive experience it was. I'm not quite sure what I expected. Something "Gothic" for sure--but would it be art?

It WAS art, art-full, deeply mesmerizing & very entertaining.

AND "Carnival" is technically brilliant.

One of the things I missed when CDs replaced LPs was the creativity that went into the record jackets. Most pop CDs these days offer very little for the eye--but this is not the case in Carnival of Lost Souls. A beautiful little booklet is enclosed loaded with wonderful drawings & other illustrations, as well as a Goth libretto of sorts & many other strange & curious & wonder-full things.

Obviously Nox Arcana knows how to make the Dark Side fun.

I definitely want more...

5 out of 5 stars they just keep gtetting better...........2007-01-08

just when you think you have heard the personal best from Joseph and William, they come up with another. This concept album, is based on the book by Bradbury "Something Wicked This Way Comes". Read the book, see the movie, and then listen to this haunted soundtrack. There is always something very different at the end of every Nox Arcana album. and this one is no different. I was blown out of my seat, and I was driving down the highway at 60 mph! No more shall be given away, I cannot spoil it for others.

ok, a bit of advice (chuckle), play the cd for the first time somewhere OTHER than a car while driving.

5 out of 5 stars Getting Better All The Time.......2006-11-01

"Carnival.." is a much improvement over "Transylvania" and I though Transylvania was really good.
This is great stuff to play in the background while dishing out the Halloween treats to the kids.
I'll eventually get all the Nox Arcana CDs just to complete the set. Based on what I've heard from the 3 I have, they will all be worth it to have.
Great Work guys!

5 out of 5 stars Nox Arcana's best release yet.......2006-10-25

Joseph Vargo is known for his elegant contributions to gothic art and dark music over the years. Several years ago, he and William Piotrowski formed Nox Arcana and have been extremely prolific. It's a testament to both of these guys that their albums have been top of the line, and "Carnival of Lost Souls" is their best release yet. The beautiful cover art indicates the macabre contents within, both visually and musically. And at the very end of the album comes a hidden track, a rock version of "Spellbound" which has an '80's metal sound. Overall a fine album by the masters of dark, musical storytelling.

Gene Moore's soundtrack to this 1962 cult classic begins like a picnic at a monster-truck rally; an engine revs into the red, and a scream is cut off by a limb-rending crash. But this is only the prelude to a festival in purgatory as a church organist is plagued by sinister visions and a stalker in corpse paint. Moore's organ score runs the gamut of carefree filler to a hygiene film ("Travel Music") to gripping, spooky colors and tones. Luckily, this second category makes up most of the disc, combining an unstable innocence--akin to Fats Waller's pipe-organ compositions in Eraserhead--with an unholy fun-house menace. This release also contains dialogue samples and score material that didn't make the final print, including the lo-fi twist of "Carnival Rock." Truly odd. --Michael Woodring

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Rip-off.......2005-03-20

This is not a true soundtrack album, but just some music taken directly from the movie put on CD. The producers tried to hide the fact by often fading the tracks out whenever a voice or sound effect is heard. The bonus tracks seem to be played on a completely different organ and I wonder why the producers could locate unused material but not the actual recordings made for the movie. Maybe this material isn't any "unused material" at all, but completely different music. It's a shame Moore's interesting score is so poorly presented here.

3 out of 5 stars Good, that's all I can say.......2004-06-16

"Carnival of Souls" (the 1962 version, not the rip-off 1998 Wes Craven re-make) was a great little movie, considering the budget and the people who made it: Herk Harvey and John Clifford, two nice and friendly filmmakers from an educational and industrial film production company called Centron in Lawrence, Kansas. I don't know if it's the movie or the soundtrack that is better, but this soundtrack certainly is not better in sound quality. Some of the music comes through pretty good, but tracks such as "Hot Bath" and "Second Departure" are very quiet, and fortunately the spooky and eerie organ music is not too bad in sound quality. Some may consider "Travel Music" a good break from the spooky music, and the small jazz combo on the two "At the Bar" numbers sounds pretty good. Then there are the songs not used in the movie at all, which are okay, except for the annoying "Psycho Carnival Organ." And I can see why there just wasn't any place in the film for "Carnival Rock."

1 out of 5 stars Carnival of Souls rip-off CD.......2000-08-20

This CD, supposedly Gene Moore's score from the classic film soundtrack, is actually nothing more than a cheaply produced recording of the mixed film soundtrack, with dialogue, footsteps, noises, etc. along with the music. If you think - as I did - that you'll be able to hear the admirable organ score better on this CD than you can with your own videotape - think again. This is a completely worthless CD, as you can easily make a cassette or CDR recording off your VCR that will be EXACTLY the same, except for some irrelevant organ hymn music that was never in the film in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Halloween Music!!!.......1999-06-27

For anyone interested in truly bizarre and disturbing music, this CD is for you! The organ music is so strange and eerie that you feel like you are inviting a haunting of your own. The dialogue tracks add to the surreal quality of the whole experience. A deffinite must for any horror buff or conneiseur of the macabre. AWESOME!!!

4 out of 5 stars Eerie and hanuting, just like the film.......1999-05-31

If you are a fan of the movie, you will like this eerie and sometimes scary soundtrack. Filled with organ music and voice clips from the movie, it conjures up images from the film. A great buy if you like this type of stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of a Recording.......2006-03-08

Very few albums manage to provide the polar mood intensities found within Miranda Sex Garden's Carnival of Souls. It is a mix of solace and alarm; a mix of terror and seduction; a fusion of the angelic and the demonic.

Though the group's members have shuffled in and out over the past couple recordings, Katharine Blake's vocals remain an identifier for MSG fans. Her sweet voice delicately muses one minute and explodes the next, while retaining it's beauty throughout. The band, as of this recording, is a great merge of talents--together they make the music gush into a marvelous waterfall of sound. Landing a steady record label is probably the main reason MSG has gone so unnoticed, and why their fanbase is still considered underground.

For those unfamiliar with Miranda Sex Garden, the group's name is reflective of their sound, to say the least. They are a garden of beauty and forbidden treasures. Carnival of Souls carries only a light fragrance of the first entirely madrigal album, but the overpowering style is more of their merge into a jazzy, industrial/goth rock...if you can even classify it.

Carnival of Souls is a fitting name for the album, as we have moments of feeling like we're travelling through a maze of mirrors or being thrust about some sort of sinister ride. My favorite track is "Tonight," a saxaphone seduction carrying cinematic mood of a 1950's detective scene where we're about to uncover a tragic secret. "Tonight I lose you to the waves," Blake sings. I love the mystery of the song "Caravan," a semi-salsa semi-industrial semi-cabaret mix woven with soprano achings. Then are are the individual stand-out moments of the album, like rise of the cello and violin in "All There Is," where the strings are on fire.

5 out of 5 stars Carpe Diem..........2005-09-06

This is what usually happens when some talented musicians with no future prospect of recording anything else together are allowed again to do the music they do best without any restrictions; in other words, there are times when a masterpiece is quite likely to come out from a long-shot, being artefacts like "Carnival of Souls" the palpable truth of it.

Recorded under a rather precarious situation (the band was in a kind of limbo since dropped from Mute Records in 1995 and the label sugar-daddy had very few chances to survive) Miranda Sex Garden performs in this album in the best (and only) way they can, that is, as if there was no tomorrow, no future chance to do the same thing again. It must be said that they succeed completely as this record constitutes, against all odds, their best effort to date. A triumph which is even more remarkable if we take into account the high level of excellency displayed in all their previous albums (`Iris', `Suspiria', etc).

Released in the year 2000, "Carnival of Souls" is a magnificent collection of songs and a few instrumentals that, paradoxically, went almost unnoticed. Even the group's former releases were more widely discussed, which is a tragedy, considering the sheer quality of this very album. Structurally, the record follows the same line of past works, alternating both vocal songs and instrumental tracks. The overall sound is a little bit more accessible compared to the other albums without betraying at any moment the peculiar and indescribable style of the band.

There are also, as usual with this group, some changes in the line-up, being Donna McKevitt and Hepzibah Sessa replaced with Teresa Casella (from medieval baebes) on electric bass together with other musicians such as Mike Servant and Barney Hollington. Trevor Sharpe and Ben Golomstock are available one more time on drums and guitars respectively. Of course the group's linchpin, Katharine Blake, is again doing most of the singing and writing the lyrics. I would say that she's never sung better than on this one. Songs like "Sleeping Beauty"; "Broken Glass", "Tonight" or "Close to the Sky" are real highlights. I see the band in this album more proficient and self-confident than ever. As a whole, Miranda Sex Garden managed to create twelve impressive tracks that, to quote one of them, are very close to...perfection. Too bad that the CD is out of stock and has become an expensive collector's item.

I'm looking forward to hear some new material by MSG in a not very distant future. Such talents shouldn't give up so soon. I have a feeling that the best for them is yet to come. There are not many bands out there that meet up every single one of my expectations as a listener, but MSG does it every time. Unfortunately, their increasing difficulties to find a label do not precisely fuel up my optimism. How can it be possible that people like this can't get a record deal? It's crystal-clear that the music industry is even more incompetent and dimmer than I thought. To cap it all, the lyrics of the gorgeous "Ever & Ever" sound to me very much like a farewell. Deeply disturbing...

I expect that "Carnival of souls" won't be the last chapter in Miranda Sex Garden's enthralling career. This wonderful story cannot stop here. But for me there is one sure thing: whether they come back or not I, at least, will always have a very special place for them in my memory. They deserve it. I don't know, it must be that I pride myself on not following the sheep mentality which is characteristic of mainstream music, but the truth is that I cannot help to feel myself fortunate for having had the luck to come across a band like this one.

Miranda Sex Garden are unprecedented and unrepeatable (and I think they are aware of that).

5 out of 5 stars A" MUST HAVE" in your cd collection!.......2001-08-15

From the same artits who brought you: the very madrigal album "madra , 1991" , the little masterpiece "iris , 1992" , the unique and richly orchestrated "suspiria , 1993" , and the surprisingly diverse & baroque " fairytales of slavery ,1994"...are back with this very tortured/gothic & jazzy album called "carnival of souls , 2000". Only this time, with a different line up. katharine blake (vocals ,violin) , trevor sharpe (percussion , drums) and ben golomstock (guitars) are back for this latest brilliant album.

ex-members, contralto Donna McKevitt (who also worked for derek jarman's TRANSLUENCE & BLUE soundtrack) , and soprano Kelly McCusker (also worked for jarman & balanescu quartet's album "possessed")...have been replaced with teresa casella (bass, backing vocals) , mike servent (keyboards) & barney hollington (violin, hammond organ).

the 11 tracks are all worth listening & exellent. (there are 12 tracks but one of em is only "incidental" & very short)...there are 6 tracks that really stand out from the rest:"tonight" , "close to the sky" , "caravan" (superior to the original version) , "sleeping beauty" , "broken glass" , "all there is"...carnival of souls is worth buying if you like gothic, experimental and original music. if that's the case. then order it now! ps: you can also find more of katharine's work in her latest group called "mediaeval baebes"... & the soundtracks of "BLUE" , "DELUSION" , "HIDEAWAY"

-ex-singer & member of miranda sex garden "jocelyn west" (previously worked for "madra" ,the group "fortran 5" , "david lynch" , "barry adamson" , "derek jarman"..etc).. has a solo album... called:" LUX VIVENS" , her name changed, she's now called "jocelyn montgomery". -donna mckevitt , performs occasionaly for the "mediaeval baebes" -... photograph book called "songs of the flesh"...- drummer trevor sharpe is also the founder of the group "NAKED GOAT".

5 out of 5 stars Wow, man........2000-08-14

This album has all the dark moodiness of "Fairytales of Slavery," and with a little more rock abandon. Blake's voice is as beautiful as ever. The best "It's like..." I can think of is if the cast of Alice in Wonderland stole The Smiths' musical gear and did a Switchblade Symphony album.

5 out of 5 stars A Carnival For Your Ears.......2000-07-29

I've been listening to this cd almost continuously for the past week. An epic masterpiece! GOD IT'S WONDERFUL! It's not as raw or unproduced-sounding as their last cd, the heavily Einstürzende Neubauten-influenced FAIRYTALES OF SLAVERY. No 9-minute instrumentals like on SUSPIRIA, either. But overall there's more great songs here than on both those albums combined. Much better production too. Singer Katherine Blake's voice is as seductive as usual. No more Donna McKevitt, though. So the madrigal-style harmonizing that was ever-present on previous releases is mostly absent. But you won't even notice Donna's gone, since Katherine sings so hypnotically. As you might expect in a Miranda Sex Garden cd, there's plenty of atmosphere, dramatically complex song structures, exotic percussion, and loads of spacey guitars and violins. And there's even a french horn on some of the songs. This one seems to have more "shoegazer"-style long blasts of sheer noise than previous albums, too. To me, the single 'Tonight' reminds me a little of a Portishead song. The wonderful 'Caravan' too. But most of the other songs are as loud and scary as anything they've ever recorded. (Well, there's nothing on here as scary as 'Play' from SUSPIRIA, but that'd be impossible to top). 'Broken Glass' is so gorgeous you'll want to put it on repeat-play forever. And 'Close to the Sky' is even greater, if that's possible. This is a near-perfect cd by a perfect band. I'm thrilled they've finally made an album that lives up to their well-deserved reputation as being one of the greatest live acts of our time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of songs - no flops!.......2000-06-16

This is one of the cd's I listen to most often, just to relax. I admit, I am a percussion head (I didn't buy this cd just to hear Glen Velez, the BEST frame tambourinist in the WORLD), but the percussive sounds in concert with the harmonica, cello, and piano make a really good sounding combination. It's a little like jazz on those instruments, but spiced up a little bit. In addition, the vocal's (which aren't really words - you have to listen for yourself) add really cool harmonics to many of the tracks. This music makes me happy whenever I listen to it - and it never fails to get me at least tapping my feet or snaping my fingers to the beat.
