Amazon.com essential recording

Once upon a time, Rod Stewart was not vamping indiscriminately about "Hot Legs" and asking "D'ya Think I'm Sexy?" He was a singer with a gravel-voice approximation of Sam Cooke and excellent taste in cover material. Here, he's toned down with folksy covers of Tim Hardin ("Reason to Believe"), Bob Dylan ("Tomorrow is Such a Long Time"), and Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (via Elvis, "That's All Right Mama"). He tops his interpretive abilities with two originals that have since become standards ("Maggie May, " "Every Picture Tells A Story"). Quite a different Rod from the one the world has come to know. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars 1971-----The lightening only struck, once................2007-07-19

And for Rod Stewart, alas, it was only once. He made a career out of this one, but for my generation, this was it. It may be only my opinion, but he couldn't top this, again. Instead, he sold out, and practically everything since, has been nothing but musical schlock. Oh, but how good this album, was.

5 out of 5 stars Indeed, It Does.......2007-05-25

Gene Santoro wrote that Rod's lyrics were "almost offhand, conversational, the kind of rambling talk you might overhear at the table in a bar." That was this album - a good friend, talking to you over (maybe slightly too many) drinks. Folkie melancholy, rockin' and rollin' - with this album you were hanging with a bud. Rod was alternative when this was released - he had instruments that no one else was using, the songs were different, the mood was congenial. Why Rod can't do something like this again, from a different perspective, is still something I can't figure out.

5 out of 5 stars Every Story Tells a Picture - So Do I.......2007-05-18

Folks. Your favorite Seer (me), despite my grandiose aspirations for Nirvanic pefection, can get himself in really dumb situations. Chance, my sometimes morose guide (who teaches movie stars how to scowl) came by and suggested that I needed a change. So he had a stylist come in to war against my long grey hair. People. I could cry. I wound up with a rooster cut and, not only that, but now it's blond! How can I go to a Seer's convention looking like this? And I can't tame this hair. I bought exotic spray (with ingredients from the figi islands), minty fresh laquer, and jell made from grapes- and nothing - absolutely nothing affects this hair at all! I must have combed it in a thousand ways-but it came out lookig just the same. However, I am a Rod Stewart look alike now without that incredible voice. You should hear me sing - sounds like sqeeks. I do a mean mousetone folks!
Anyway, Rod, on this album, secures and deserves his legacy no matter what age has done to him. In this he is the ultimate rocker, the soulful crooner, the balladeer all rolled into one. And, let's not forget those vocals. Gritty and wonderful and one of a kind.
The thing that strikes me most about this album is the wise choice of songs and the ability to really create "live" sound. It sounds like they are playing in your living room and this makes the music sound alive and real.
We begin with "Every Picture Tells a Story" which is Rod at his finest, rockin' rave best. Even the break in this song is picture perfect. Then on to that slow soulful piano ballad "Seems Like a Long Time" with the essential female backing vocals. Listen to how the chorus gets insistent near the end and then goes back down to the beginning sparse arrangement. So superb.
Wonderful slide guitar and the band in fine, soulful swing with "That's All Right". All the instruments groove on this one. Then the acoustic, beautiful "Tomorrow is a Long Time" with tasty guitar and fiddle and aching vocals by Rod. I should point out that he secured some extremely talented musicians for this project. The unity of playing is prominent with the joy of hearing all contributions so crisp and clear.
The acoustic beginning of "Maggie May" reminds me of when I went back in time to King Arthur's court. It was during a big feast. I remember getting sick on the wine. Anyway, the song is about the love of a young man and an older woman. I'm sure you have all heard this classic by now. But, as an aside, your Metamorpho has personally tried to make a living out of playing pool and it was not pretty. They almost broke my thumbs.
Then we have "Mandolin Wind" with beautiful mandolins and slide guitar. Again, how sweet this song begins and then moves towards a crest. Rod knows what he's doing. He offers the gritty syrup and then belts us with sheer gravel. What a mason he is.
"(I Know) I'm Losing You" is a great version of that soulful tune. Aside from the great beat, Rod treats us to a meaningful, expert vocal, brimming with emotion and desperation. His interpretation of this song is right on target.
He ends the album with Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe". Beautiful. You can hear the ache of a man who has lost faith but still wants to find a shred of that faith in order to have some meaning in life. Absolutely so well done.
In closing, the peaks and valleys of this album resonate long after you hear it. It is so well thought out and the order is an inspiration. This is classic Rod Stewart. His career may have had peaks and valleys as well. But this one stands on the highest peak. A classic - and so good to hear instruments that have a real sound.
That's all for now people. Now, don't feel too badly for me. Warmer weather is coming so I'm going to buzz cut my hair and then put on my seer's hat. If that doesn't work I can get my orange clown wig out of storage. The future, after all, belongs to the clever.

Yours, from the French Bank ------Metamorpho

5 out of 5 stars Every Picture Tells A Story, Don't It?.......2007-04-18

This album is what church aspires to be but can never be. Even more soulful, by a hair, than the "Truth" album by the Jeff Beck Group. In fact, just listen to these two back-to-back. If "Blues Deluxe" (from Truth) doesn't rip your blues-lovin' soul out, you ain't alive. And if "Ever Picture..." doesn't break your heart like it needs to be broke, just go out and pick yourself up some Justin Timberlake, bro, 'cause it's over.

5 out of 5 stars to my grandchildren........2007-04-09

yes children, there was once a time when rod stewart made good albums. even a great one. this is the great one. great rock and roll numbers. beautiful ballads. music with soul. listen to "mandolin wind," for instance. that's great stuff. so is the title track and "tomorrow is a long time." and hear what he does with the tim hardin classic, "reason to believe." that's certainly great. "maggie may," you may even have heard this on the oldies station. fine tune, isn't it? lots of excellent guitar on this album, as well. ron wood, who would soon become a rolling stone, plays here; and the boy sure has a feel for rock and roll. somebody needs to get ahold of mr stewart and make him listen to this album. couldn't he do something like this again? just for his old fans. maybe rick rubin could slap him upside the head and talk some sense into the old geezer. anyway, children, this is how it was, back even before the days of disco. those were good times. oh, nostalgia.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Saliva's heavy rock--with a dash of rap--is at once current and timeless, unlike many of the bands spawned by Korn and Limp Bizkit. This Memphis-bred bunch's powerful, diverse debut features a dozen lyrically and musically focused tracks from a band clearly possessed of strong chops and smart heads. Rangy singer Josey Scott's passionate delivery works well when matched with the chunky riffing of "Musta Been Wrong," the soaring, layered song's intensity balanced by shredding guitar. Every Six Seconds has many such moments, with producer Bob Marlette's taut, techno-inflected touch lending "Lackluster" and "Faultline" a NIN vibe. "Hollywood" is a classic midtempo take on Tinseltown, while the CD's first single, "Your Disease," is simply a hit. "My Goodbyes," the ideal album closer, has a mystical musical quality befitting departed loved ones. Ultimately, Saliva's thoughtful, heartfelt, earthy intensity make Every Six Seconds an impressive entrée from start to finish. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars A huge step forward for music.......2007-02-20

I was hooked from the very first time I heard " Your Disease". I saw the video and was just blown away. I found the CD for like $6.99 at Best Buy when it came out and it has been played so many times I can't count.
I have bought all there CD' since the first. Each time I am waiting the day the are released. I have seen them live and they are one of the best shows ( I have seen more than 60) I have ver seen. I met Josie Scott and he is abosolutely real...

5 out of 5 stars Awsome music, great show!!!!!.......2006-01-08

I have been a fan of these guys since their start. I saw them at one of their shows and was blown away. I was lucky enough to be within 15 feet of the band and the show was amazing! If you have a chance to catch their show, do it! I highly recommend this cd and all of their others! I can't wait to see them in person again!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars a realy good heavy rock cd.......2005-09-12

this is a very good band wich folows a very good cd. they are very good i started listen to them after seeing the movie the fast and the furious. they are one good band and this album is very good.

3 out of 5 stars My first taste of this punk-rap-rock band Saliva.......2005-07-01

A friend of mine told me I would enjoy this album as he and I have some similar music tastes. So I purchased this CD through Amazon.com believing this was their debut album but in actual fact it's their sophmore album from 2001. Overall this Memphis based band from the USA splices their rock music with bits from punk and a splice from rap. Linkin Park did this successfully, but I just couldn't quite get this band's musical sound. To me it sounded like they had not captured their own sound and were borrowing heavily from other well known groups in the rock and punk scene like Korn and Nickelback. All in all this album release lacked successful cohesiveness. Not that it's a bad effort, just the end result doesn't pan out. The lyrics of the songs are at times hard to understand and the lead vocalist has a tendency to bark out the lyrics and scream it out. However 'Saliva' is a young band and they will mature into their own music style with successive albums. Two songs on this album worth a spin are 'Click Click, Boom' & 'Beg'. Only for hardcore nu-metal fans and fans of hard rock.

5 out of 5 stars real music for the masses.......2005-06-12

I still listen to this as much as did when it first came out. My first experience with Saliva was the video for " Your disease".
I was blown away by the power and energy this band has. The world has been void of hard rock for too long. In the times of digital music this a refreshing look back to when music was fun and the bands were almost dangerous. This cd has an edge on it that only a few bands can manage in modern times. "Musta been wrong", "your disease", and "hollywood" are some of the better tracks.
If you are a hard rock fan try this one you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Best Drinking CD Ever!!!.......2005-04-06

My buddy in college gave me this CD. His friend had heard them at some bar at U of A, and bought a CD. This album is incredible. Now, the lyrics are not exactly deep...but they are catchy, recognizable, relatable sing- (shout-) along lyrics and girls love these songs, too. I had so, so, so many good nights listening to this CD getting absolutely tossed and singing as loud as I possibly could! Souls Aflame is a great album, too, but after that their more produced material (a lot of which is just rereleases of the first two album's tracks) kinda suck. They're weak sounding and poppy. Buy this CD and Souls Aflame. They're cheap. They're fun.

5 out of 5 stars Quit Comparing O.A.R. to DMB!.......2005-03-22

The only comparison between the two is that they both tend to have long drawn out melodies. Whoever invented that analogy should be shot in the face. O.A.R. is amazing. If you actually know the band you will know that this entire C.D. was written and recorded while the band was still in HIGH SCHOOL! Blow your mind at all? Give the CD a listen and you'll be amazed. Don't judge on what you've read or the 30 second samples. Quite frankly if you have any interest in ska or reggae or jam bands, or just happy feel good musict actually listen to the band and I assure you will you will love it. Once you hear the CD, go see them live, they put on an amazing show

5 out of 5 stars dmb sucks compared to OAR!! .......2005-01-01

OAR totally blows DMB away! I just saw them at the 930 club in DC, and it was the most amazing show i've ever seen. I have also seen DMB in concert, but they just dont have the same energy. OAR is in a league of their own. Any true fan of music will appreciate the way they mix different styles and genres, and come up with some of the best music out there! OAR RULES!!

4 out of 5 stars Love all O.A.R music.......2004-10-09

I actually listened to this CD for the first time a few weeks ago. What a difference between the music now and this CD. It is not a bad thing but just the inprovement is incredible. Just shows how far you guys have come. I hope you guys continue to make kick ass yet chill music. True O.A.R. fans should understand this. Keep up the great work. This may be a long shot. If one of the band members reads this maybe they can shoot me an e-mail. No not shoot me---lol

gotta say i love it.
To me this cd is more representative of Sublime or Long Beach Dub Allstars, than DMB.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!.......2007-06-26

I was first introduced to Hoobastank by my wife who had heard "The Reason" on the radio. I bought The Reason for her but I became an instant fan. I read some bad reviews about Every Man for Himself (obviously by losers) and like a fool, I listened. After nearly wearing out The Reason, I decided to take a chance and get EMFH. This is by far the best music I have ever heard. There are so many flavors in the music on this CD that it leaves me completely satisfied. As much as I love The Reason, I love EMFH even more. It's almost like they were in my head when they wrote the songs; I can relate to every song. EMFH has proven that Hoobastank has talent way beyond what most bands even dream about. The lyrics are powerful, the music is powerful. This CD is absolutely at the top of my list of favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Different Style, Still Same Hoobastank.......2007-05-17

Initially, I was disappointed with this album. But, all it took was some time (about a week) for it to grow on me. Now, I think EMFH is totally awesome! "Born To Lead" and "Inside Of You" are my favorite songs, but the rest are also really sweet.

I highly recommend that you get the two bonus tracks "Finally Awake" and "Waiting", because they add another level of greatness to the album.

EMFH differs from the first two albums in musical style, but if you give it a chance, then you'll come to enjoy all that THIS album has to offer.

1 out of 5 stars reeks.......2007-04-14

Another good rock band killed by a lame ballad (hello, The Reason). In short, let me sum up my review of their newest album in three simple words:

it totally blows.

3 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2007-04-11

I was extremely excited to get this CD in since their self titled album was good and the Reason album was outstanding. This album strays away from the Hoobastank sound that people love. The songs are much calmer and slower, they don't contain as much quality guitar playing. The last track, "More than a memory" is a big letdown because the last track from The Reason, "Disappear" is probably Hoobastank's best song and I was hoping the same would be the case in this CD. It seems like Hoobastank has lost their energy and sound in this CD. Hopefully they realized this and go back to their original sound for their next CD.

5 out of 5 stars still kickin' a little @$$.......2007-02-15

I saw them live on Guam and they tore it up.

The song "inside of you" is an instant favorite of mine. I play it over and over again while I dance around my living room in my underwear.

4 out of 5 stars Worse than the other two... but it's still pretty decent.......2007-05-07

I used to listen to the Self Titled and The Reason album all the time, but for this album i can't stand some of the songs like More than a Memory which is very boring. At first I thought this album was going to suck because If I Were you sucked and Born to Lead isn't very good either. Inside of You is alright though. The good songs on this album are First of Me, Moving Forward, First of Me, Good Enough, and If Only. I used to like all their songs which made Hoobastank one of my favorite bands i've ever listened to, but this album kinda disappoints me. It's like any other album I have now, I think i'm too generous to give it a 4... but hoobastank rocks so... yea...

They have a song called Face the Music on Myspace which is pretty good. I wanna get it but i can't find it anywhere...

3 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2007-03-17

5 out of 5 stars It's okay.......2006-12-12

I like their new stuff way more than the old, and the album flows really nice, but I'm not the biggest Hoobatank fan. But honestly, I do like it, some of the tracks sound the same, but all in all, I'm not diappointed lol.

1 out of 5 stars "The Reason" rock music is in the @#$% hole.......2006-11-12

Sorry guys, I loved Hoobastank ever since they first came out and up until this album...but let's face it...this is trash and the only people who give this more than 3 stars are probably obsessed fanatics who beat off every time they hear "the reason"...It's good bands like this making BAD albums like this that account for rock music being on the decline..or as I like to call it : IN THE S***HOLE!

5 out of 5 stars Most excellent.......2006-07-16

Now I personaly liked The reason, and saddly havn't listened to the self tittled cd so I can't compare, but....
This one is awesome.
First off, since no one that I read reviews, mentioned inside of you. While it deffinatley isn't a little kids song, its deffinatley a song that shows a bit more truthfullness to the music, and the beat gave me an old Jamiriquai(sp) feeling.
Don't tell me, Never saw it comming, and the others were nothing short of good.
But the other two songs that stuck out in my mind were Born to lead and it's overreppeated courus, and the first of me, which actualy reminds me of Linkin park in some ways.
All in all a worthwhile buy.

4 out of 5 stars Jam Band craze.......2005-03-18

I cannot even begin to tell you how many of my friends listen to OAR, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Phish, Ben Kweller, etc. I have to admit at first i was skeptical of the whole jam band music scene, but i had found a cd that one of my friends left over which just happend to be OAR. so of course out of curiousity i popped it in my cd player. And i ABSOLUTLY LOVED IT!!! Now i am all about the jam band craze. All of their cds are great to kick back and listen to with some friends, ridin down the road or perfect for listenin to at the beach and just relaxin and havin a great time. "I feel home", "hangover", "sail away", and "3am" are my favorite songs. ok, bottom line... GREAT BUY! especially for all of the Jam Band lovers out there.

2 out of 5 stars frat-boy rock.......2004-09-30

Great soul-searching tunes for the former frat-boy with his buds in their golf cart. This music lacks the depth and genuine soul of more popular jam bands. They rock to a decent beat, but nothing special or terribly original.

5 out of 5 stars Best O.A.R. Available.......2004-05-10

This is the best of O.A.R's 4 studio released albums. All of the songs contain their authentic sound with "So moved on" being the best ("City on down" and "i feel home" are not too far behind). If don't have any O.A.R. cd's, get this one first, but be sure to buy their other 3 studio albums and their awesome live album "Any Time Now." Also, if you get the chance, go see them live, it's quite an experience.

5 out of 5 stars Up another notch...........2003-05-02

They're progressing as far as musicians and song-writers. Marc's voice is raspy, however that's what makes the CD a must-have. If you appreciate good wholesome lyrics and beats that can't make you upset, then you've got a problem. This CD cures all that, and then some..mark my words, they will be huge someday.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible Album.......2006-11-25

I have over 2000 CD's from every genre imaginable. This is one of the top 20 cd's in my collection - nuff said.

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic!.......1999-04-04

I bought this CD several years ago. I am now gifting it! It is simply haunting. romantic and quite beautiful. Make sure you own this!

4 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorite relaxing CDs.......1998-11-18

My brother gave me a tape of this CD back in 89. I continue to listen to it almost once a month (not something I can generally say about 8 year old music). The guitar is hauntingly smooth and similar to Pat Methany. The sax and other players weave into the mood like kids in a sandbox. Give it a try!
