Given the film's fevered, rooted-in-cold-war-history nuclear tensions and claustrophobic, intensely Russian settings, promising newcomer/Hans Zimmer protégé Klaus Badelt (The Time Machine and contributions to Gladiator and Pearl Harbor) was saddled with more than a few expectations in scoring director Kathryn Bigelow's Soviet sub thriller. But Badelt has admirably risen to the occasion, conjuring up an orchestral score (masterfully performed by the Kirov Orchestra and Chorus under Valery Giergiev) rooted in moody Russian classicism--and a dash of Zimmer's favorite Holstian drama as well. The centerpiece here is the neo-classical Suite for Orchestra and Chorus in G Minor, its four movements ("Fear," "Fate," "War," "Soul") powerfully underscoring the film's unrelenting pressure cooker of drama and emotion. Badelt's use of excerpts from Richard Einhorn's Voices of Light suite ("Reactor") is equally inspired, its haunting choral touches and spare, evocative arrangements imparting some compelling gravitas to the story's dark sense of impending doom. A score as noble, if emotionally ominous, as the 20th-century Russian masters who inspired it. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best scores .......2006-06-09

Klaus Badelt is another wonderful artist who can make the music be the movie. Rich with themes that fit the russian genre. The last track 'reunion' brings tears to my eyes picturing scenes from the movie. This music grabs you emotionally! Wonderful score.

5 out of 5 stars An Underwater Masterpiece..........2004-02-01

My favorite one in my movie soundtrack collection! The music of K-19 made the movie even more moving. If you are looking for great music pieces for a "every goes wrong" russian submarine, and I mean the feel of the waves, tensions on board and the heroic efforts, this is "the" soundtrack. I have to admit, even thought I loved the movie, it`s wouldn`t been as great without the real struggling russian submarine music effect that Klaus Badelt created. The music moves me everytime I hear it...I close my eyes and I can see myself on board of this boat peeking out of the waves with the cold winds on my cheeks.

5 out of 5 stars Classic (al ) Badelt.......2003-07-16

For decades there has been a fine line between classical based orchestral film score music and the true classical masters. Well for K-19 Klaus Badelt has become Tchaikovsky reincarnated. This is the most classical based score I have heard for many years (Horner does a fine Ralph Vaughn -Williams) and this is one the Russian master would be proud of. The first four tracks are even called "Suites for Orchestra and Chorus". Badelt has again shown that his first hit "Time Machine" was no one hit wonder story. Klaus Badelt has proven to be the new "wunderkind" of film scores and his music for the forthcoming "Ned Kelly" again proves that. But for now enjoy this one if you love both submarine scores "Hunt for Red October" and "Crimson Tide". K-19 makes it a fine trio.

5 out of 5 stars Music the masters would be proud to claim!.......2003-03-21

This album is filled with music that the early master composers would be proud to claim as their own. The first six tracks are pure, sweet, pasionate Russian classical orchestra music, befitting any of the symphonic works of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and even more so, Rachmaniov. Klaus Badelt has written music which would please the Gods. My heartfelt thanks as a simple listener, for this musical treat.

4 out of 5 stars Another great Klaus Badelt score.......2002-12-01

After his tremendous success with The Time Machine, Klaus Badelt returns once again with another great score to K-19: The Widowmaker. With an outstanding performance by The Kirov Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of conductor Valery Gergiev, Badelt proves that once again, he is one of the hottest new composers out there. Badelt starts with "Suite for Orchestra and Chorus in G Minor" which is a classical piece that he wrote which the score's main themes were developed. "Fear - Largo" contains a militaristic theme that reoccurs throughout the score several times. "Fate - Adagio" contains a dark string crescendo that resorts to a lovely piece of music. "War - Allegro" is an action cue that contains some excellent and difficult horn parts. "Soul - Mysterioso" is the best of the 4 with the themes occurring again in full force with the orchestra and chorus. The rest of the score is derived from these first 4 tracks and contains different versions of those themes each time you hear them, so they never get boring. "Home" is a waltz version of the theme heard in "Fear - Largo" and "Heroes" gives us the theme again in full force. "Journey" contains a male chorus chanting the main theme in Russian, much like Basil Poledouris used a chorus in The Hunt For Red October. "Missile Launch - The Rescue" is a long action cue that sounds a lot like "War - Allegro" with the difficult horn parts. "Reunion" ends the score in an excellent fashion with the main themes occurring one more time sending the listener off with great melodies. "Reactor - Selections from Voices of Light" is a low key piece composed by Richard Einhorn that fits in nicely with the score, but is nowhere near as good. I was hoping to give this score 5 stars, but for me, it just lacked that one little thing that makes it an outstanding score that you want to hear over and over again. It is a great score with a wonderful sound and great themes, however, and Klaus Badelt impresses me once again.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to find but well worth it........2002-08-10

I saw the movie about five years ago, and have been trying to find the soundtrack for it for the past three or four years. I finally won it on eBay! And when I got it I was very pleased. Thomas Newman is brilliant and this album is no exception, and is certainly his best in my opinion. The movie is one of my favorites, and so naturally I loved this album. The instruments are different from what are normally used, but nonetheless makes for a wonderful and charming CD. I would suggest searching for this one in a very good used CD store... It's very hard to find. :( That's the only problem.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS SCORE!.......2001-08-01

This is, by far, one of Thomas Newman's best pieces of work. I loved the movie, but the score takes the cake! If you do not own this score, you must find it! Very different.

5 out of 5 stars A work of art.......2001-07-02

This is one of those few cases where the quality of the soundtrack exceeds that of the film. The movie Unstrung Heroes was odd, and sweet, but it is the soundtrack that has made a lastling impression on my memory.

Created by soundtrack mastermind Thomas Newman (American Beauty, Erin Brockovitch, Pay it Forward, Six Feet Under), this CD is a work of art. It is quirky, beautiful, touching, and highly unconventional, all in the same, surprised breath. Newman, a man whose talents seem to have taken Hollywood by storm in the past few seasons, appears to have truly outdone himself with this creation. Unstrung Heroes is the earliest work of his with his unique style, the disturbingly enigmatic music that has movie producers--and movie goers--coming back for more.

Eerie whistles, hollow and mysterious windchimes, xylophone tones, and a surprising variety of other ubsurd noises fall together in this CD under Newman's talented and experienced guidance. The music he creates doesn't seem like music at all, but rather a series of melodies and sounds woven together to create complex emotions that moviegoers can relate to their own lives and memories. It's really not hard to see why this fan rated it with five stars!

I came across this album because im a huge KMK fan, and heard the reference to humble gods in an old song. anyway, i bought this album four years ago and it's still one of my favorites. a true example of old school south-cali skate punk. every track on this album is good, except the ICP song, just isnt up to par with the rest of the album. But overall, if you like social distortion, or rancid, or nofx, then you should love this album. as it is their best work ever.

I just received this CD in the mail yesterday, from CD Wonderland. Jack and his band swing mightily in this dixieland set. I had been wanting to hear Jack in a dixieland format.
This is an out of print CD, so grab it when you can. I had the
great fortune to meet Jack in the restroom at Steamer's Cafe, Fullerton CA. In this great jazz setting, I have listened to Jack 4 different times. He said that Hollywood Heroes features a great pianist, Ray Sherman. Boy, he wasn't kidding.
If you want to hear Jack in great voice (1988), swinging like mad, then you simply MUST obtain this CD! In the words from the song "Do It Again," - "you won't regret it, come and get it."

Jack Sheldon is the hidden treasure of jazz singers. No one sings better jazz then a jazz musician. If his rendering of "I Thought About You" dosen't put you away...then go right to hip hop, babe.

Composers could actually be called "Hollywood Heroes", really now, without their music, films would be nothing more than shadows on a wall, without a score...the composers goal is to write a music, which is the heart and soul of the project, and this compilation fits the bill...let's take a good look at our composers for this album ~ John Addison, John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Fielding, Maurice Jarre,Trevor Jones, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Tiomkin and John Williams, this certainly looks like a WINNER to me.

There are so many stand outs...but let's zero in on scores that are not as readily available to us, the filmscore collector ~ "HIGH ROAD TO CHINA"(Barry)..."MAD MAX III:BEYOND THUNDERDOME"(Jarre)..."THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES"(Fielding)..."TORN CURTAIN"(Addison)..."CLIFFHANGER"(Jones)...there are five John Barry scores, and what better label to present them than Silva Screen, who has released more than a dozen albums by the legendary composer...all from the baton of Nic Raine with The City Of Prague Philharmonic and as always with the blessings of producer James Fitzpatrick.

    Album Description

New country music, traditional country, folk, pop and rock are the genres of this unique album by singer - writer Malcolm Forest. Recorded in Nashiville with some of the best musicians in town, the record takes the listener on a voyage to Film Capital of the World between the decades of the twenties and forties, with references to the star system and the romantic personas of the screen.

    Song Descriptions:

    1. Red River Valley (Malcolm Forest). A layback ballad inspired by this traditional western song. A beautiful surprise-solo with cross-the-border overtones makes up for a sleek production. A very catchy original chorus was added to this classic song.

    2. Cowboy, Cowboy (Malcolm Forest). A Texas two-step fun and dance song. The "fastest gun alive" invites everyone to get on his or her feet and move! A sure shot for all country saloons and mechanical bull riders throughout the wild west and the world.

    5. Amarillo (B. Alves - Anthony - Malcolm Forest). A modern new country style cowboy-star lament. After being deceived in Hollywood, Mr. "Rough Rider" "gets on his horse on his way home to Amarillo".

    6. Movie Love (Robert Junkglas). A very clever lyric for a very clever song on "Hollywood love". A great performance throughout and a real American rocker. In the video production Malcolm Forest admits "it's only MOVIE LOVE", he's got a "Hollywood heart"!

    7. Hollywood Heroes (Malcolm Forest - Anthony). This is a very beautiful ballad with all the qualities of a standard. It is romantic and suave with a contrasting heavy chorus. The lyric is also exceptional. It is colorful and interesting.

There are references to magic names of Tinsel Town in the lyrics. The chorus lists many film titles: Blue Skies, the Great Lie and closes with a "leave the stars to the sky" sign off.

    8. She's a Super Star (Malcolm Forest). This is a rap about a cute starlet who's got Hollywood under her thumb.

    9. Just Another Face in The Crowd (Dennis Caldirola - Joe Ericksen). A romantic ballad about the girlfriend that "went away to be a star". An American Mighty Tree original with enough withstanding power to last forever as a classic pop song in this production.

    10. Oh! Susanna (Malcolm Forest - Stephen Collins Foster). Stephen Collins Foster's classic is presented in country-dance style. Fireworks effects include even a performance by "Silver", our heroe's heroe horse, all in homage to Hollywood Heroes.

    11. Just a Woman (Jim Black - Malcolm Forest). Some say the most beautiful ballad on the album. The lyric refers to Greta Garbo with a double meaning: it could just well be someone that you've personally known very well... Malcolm Forest wrote the lyric collaborating with Jim Black, an Australian songwriter.

    13. Oh My Darling, Clementine (Malcolm Forest - Percy Montrose). This great classic is presented in a traditional yet modern arrangement. A haunting soprano solo by Victoria Kerbauy plays the part of Clementine's ghost.

    14. Hollywood Nights (Medley by Malcolm Forest). An overture Hollywood extravaganza, like the opening of a great musical. The "20TH CENTURY FOX TRADEMARK" kicks it off. Although the themes may sound familiar, they are all original with the exception of the opening theme, "HOORAY FOR CAPTAIN SPAULDING" from a Marx Brothers movie and Chaplin's "SMILE". "HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS" showcases some excellent music writing and production gusto.
