5 out of 5 stars Two of the great ladies of jazz, relaxed and having fun together........2005-10-03

This unusual CD features the great Betty Carter performing live with the great Carmen McRae, both having fun as they share the spotlight. Betty's voice is higher and sweeter than Carmen's lower, stronger, and more assertive voice, but together they sound like extensions of each other, almost alteregos, as they interact, engage in delightful patter, and joke and obviously mug with the audience. This is a CD for which one yearns for a video, since these two megastars of jazz are so in sync that it's sometimes difficult to tell which one is singing in these unusually long tracks.

In all tracks it is the singers themselves who are the focus. Accompaniment is kept to a minimum--at most, just the piano, bass, and/or drum--and frequently McRae and Carter sound as if they are singing a capella. "Stolen Moments (You Belong to Her)" features wonderful harmony and impeccable timing, as both singers hit their notes exactly on cue. "But Beautiful," slower and more ballad-like, shows both singers alternating the solo line, ending with surprising high notes and perfect harmony. In one of the longest songs, "Am I Blue?" McRae begins with a solo, then turns the mike to Carter halfway through, before they join and swing together for the remainder of this nearly seven-minute track.

One of the best songs on the CD is "Sometimes I'm Happy," which begins with Carter singing to a bass accompaniment (by Jim Hughart), switching to scat and wild improvisation by McRae, and ending with Carter singing scat. In fact, their ability to sing scat together and alternately is one of the best aspects of this CD. In "Isn't It Romantic?" these two stars obviously enjoy harmonizing, which they continue with "Sophisticated Lady," which alternates solos and then combines. The high point of the CD is "It Don't Mean a Thing," however. From the beginning, in which they sing together accompanied by a drum (Wynard Harper), then piano (Eric Gunnison), the two have fun alternating scat turns, before the drum solos, and all go wild.

As McRae and Carter exchange patter and interject comments within their songs, they are obviously playing to their audience, which responds audibly on the recording, one of the great advantages of live performances. Bright, fun, and relaxed, this CD shows two of the great ladies of jazz interacting and sharing the spotlight as the audience roars its approval. Don't miss this one. N Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars A hellish match made in heaven!.......2004-04-21

I love Billie. I love Sarah. I love Ella. I love Dinah. But if I were on a desert island, I would have to have the music of Carmen and Betty! They both had the wonderful combination of heart AND technique. They make you live the story within the song as they demonstrate monster creativity in reconstructing/recreating a song. The only song that seems under par is Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments". The pitch strikes me as flat and i suspect that was mostly Betty's problem because she often intentionally or otherwise seemed to have a ptich problem or a different sense of pitch that was right for her. She could really sound flat to my ears from time to time but...
Both women had an exceptional balance of interpretation of musicianship... awesomely so. Listen to Duke Ellingtons' "Sophisticated Lady". Such humor and joy on this set. Listen to the way Carmen sings: "Diamonds Shining...". It is dark and glistening! Listen to Betty's interprtation of "Where or When". Originally this song was performed in a light operatic style. Betty does a Brilliant reconstruction of an this old chestnut.as she takes it to another place of timelessness. She makes it live again. Almost like you are hearing it for the first time.
This is not a "perfect" album. It is magical! It touches in deep places that make you glad you were a live to witness such beauty.
Early on in the set they joke about how nobody imagined that these two could ever get along long enough to do anything together. Carmen asserts that they did it because they were smart as foxes. And they were for awhile. Within two years of doing this recording they were infact in an ugly fued. None the less they left a legacy of beauty and creativity.
Yeah, get this one!

5 out of 5 stars Two of the Greats!!.......2004-02-07

Carmen McRae & Betty Carter deliver a great live set of jazz and fun, both ladies giving each other room to shine and both singing together as a duet should be done! not trying to out do each other! i would have loved for them to have recorded more duet lp's, but i'm so glad they gave us this wonderful cd!!!

1 out of 5 stars I must be missing something.......2002-03-03

I picked this up at the local used CD store for $1 figuring I'd found a bargain. After a couple listens, I traded it right back to them. I don't know why this CD gets such high ratings, both here and in the jazz guides. The sound is muddied, the singing far from serious, and the banter hard to discern.

It reminds me somewhat of another very overrated CD....Tony Bennett MTV Unplugged.

I don't begrudge either Carmen or Betty their place in jazz history....but this CD is really a poor example of that of which they are capable.

4 out of 5 stars They Could Have Done it Better but ... What Matters!.......2000-07-10

This is a CD re-issue with a repertoire more complete than the first CD edition. Notably, this new CD offers "Love Dance" as composed by Brazilian Ivan Lins and brightly sung by Carmen McRae. Above all, there is master voice and performance command here. To be listened to on your knees.

5 out of 5 stars reviewing an album, renewing a spirit.......2006-07-18

my problem is that i often set my expectations so high (for a purchase, an event, a meal) that, while the actual experience may be very good, it will seldom be as good as the expectation i have set for it. aware of this dynamic, i realized that i may have been setting myself up for another reality that fell short of the anticipation. but that didn't happen with Maynard's "Live at the Great American Music Hall Part II". it just didn't happen. hearing "hey jude" after not hearing it for 20 years (on MF Horn II) was so very sweet. a fresh version of "macarthur park" is always welcome. and "country road" was just as sweet -- even better -- than i recall it from his concerts in the 70s. true, i'm hard core on maynard. but this is 5-star.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting Live CD.......2002-08-24

I was first introduced to the music of Maynard Ferguson about the time this concert was recorded. I was able to attend concerts of his thoughout the 70's and got to witness the evolution of his music. This CD is a must have for MF fans for a couple of reasons. It is the first live CD I have ever heard from anyone that actually captures the true essense of the concert. Not only are we treated to the music but it includes Maynard's intro of each song. This is great because you learn who the soloists are in each piece. It also provides a look into MF just before his popularity exploded in 1975 with the release of Chameleon. If there is a downside to this it's the sound quality. The brass really overcomes the saxes on a couple of numbers. In other words the balance isn't quite right but other than that this is a great addition to your collection. Recorded in 1973, and between the releases of MF Horns 2 & 3, this concert shows touches of older and newer MF. Since Amazon doesn't list the songs here I will with brief comments.

1)MacArthur Park starts off the CD as the end of his first set of the night. As always, MacArthur Park is great, and we get to experience a great solo from drummer Randy Jones. In comparing this to the Live at Jimmy's version (recorded about a year later) I would say Jimmy's is a wee bit better, but not by much.

2 & 3)Blue Birdland. If you ever attended a MF concert you've heard this. It's the intro and ending piece of his sets. Why they included them here is beyond me but each is barely a minute long so no sweat.

4)Take the A train. A piece made famous by Duke Ellington. A solid but short number (listed at 3:37 the music is actually less that 3:00 and includeds MF's intro)

5)All Right, AllRight. Written by keyboardist Pete Jackson it features Jackson, Tony Bucanan on tenor sax, Eddie Byrne on trombone, and Joel DiBartolo on bass. A typical 20 minute MF selection, the solos are expanded and Maynard just screams. Very enjoyable.

6)County Road. The famous James Taylor song. MF originally recorded this about 1971 and was straight forward with it then. This version lasts about 9 minutes and features a beautiful into by Jackson on electric piano. It then moves slowly into the main theme and continues to build until the whole band is involved.

7)Hey Jude. The last piece included here. Although I didn't particularily care for the studio version of this track this live version is wonderful. Only eight minutes long yet features some classic Maynard screaming that must have made the whole hall shake.

There you have it. About 60 minutes of great MF music. Do not hesitate to grab this, it may not be around for long.

4 out of 5 stars As close as we current have to MF 4 & 5 on CD.......2002-03-31

Alright, Columbia, why not release the better version of this: MF Horn 4 & 5; Live At Jimmy's on CD???

Huh?

Huh?

Until then, if you're a 70's Maynard Fan, get this!

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2000-08-22

I bought this cd because I am a big Maynard fan, and I was amazed at the songs he can still dish out at his age. He is a great player and I recomend buying this, the solos are absolutely amazing.

5 out of 5 stars The Bevis Frond is original one of a kind music........1999-12-19

Great album by founder and lead guitarist Nick Salomon, bass guitarist Ade Shaw of Hawkwind fame, and drummer Andy Ward formaly of Camel. I had the chance to see this tour in a small venue in Portland, Oregon. I had never heard of Bevis Frond, but Andy Ward is from my favorite band Camel and I had to see him play. The music was awesome, a mixture of psychodelic, feedback, blues, and folk, with some english humour thrown in and lots of heart. Nick is a master songwriter and introduces many of the songs on this CD. This gives the listener a sense of knowing a lot about Nick and where he is coming from.

The live album brought back great memories of the show. The opening song Hole Song #2 has a great guitar lick which is unforgetable and my favorite tune, Stone Trained Driver has an original set of lyrics that will make you smile.

5 out of 5 stars The Bevis Frond at the Great American Music Hall.......1999-12-15

It is truly a wonder how so much talent can be often overlooked by so many. This man proves that there are geniuses all around us everyday. Buy it and be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars What you hear live is what you get on CD.......1999-10-14

The Bevis Frond finally scraped their live sound onto a full CD after many years and many albums that psychedelic music fans cherish. Their sound on the live CD is the same as their sound on the stage. And I think that's the best compliment anyone can give a live record.

2 out of 5 stars mmm, wehere is the fire.......2005-07-26

The first song is great, Lennon's mother. The introduction of each song takes about 1 minute and this is very boring, it takes the tempo away. I had expected more power and faster tracks.

4 out of 5 stars The Golden Sound.......2005-04-28

This was one of MF's great bands - Randy Johnson on drums, Pete Jackson on the keys, Linn Bivano as lead trumpet. True, the group was primarily British flavored, but any music lover knows music is the universal language, and these cats have the golden touch. The orginal "Maria" sends chills down your spine with the masters soaring sound. The ensembles are great and face it, if you ever had the chance to hear Maynard in concert in the 1970's, this album - and volume II, will take you back to the golden age and the golden sound of the man. The only drawback, and a very minor one, is the conversion from the old original analog tape to digital seems a little "flat" but the selection is most definately a worthwhile addition to your Maynard library.

5 out of 5 stars For the Dense Man above.......2003-05-01

If you are very, very dense and by a Maynard Ferguson cd not wanting a big, brassy sound.....You shouldn't be listening to music ever. In short this is a fantastic cd. Including timeless songs such as the searing trumpet feature of "Maria" and of course the one you almost always hear at a Maynard show, "Blue Birdland" the band is tight with one another, the solos go somewhere with excellent melodic ideas and of course Maynard Ferguson in his younger days with that huge sound that we all know and love him for. A must have for any Maynard fan.

3 out of 5 stars BRASS, BRASS, AND MORE BRASS.......1998-06-24

THIS ALBUM IS MAYNARD'S MOSTLY BRITISH BIG BAND FROM THE EARLY 70'S. THE TUNES ARE ARRANGEMENTS OF 70'S POP MUSIC, FOR THE MOST PART. ALL TUNES ARE PLAYED FORTISSIMO! IF YOU LIKE LOTS OF BLAZING, SCREAMING TRUMPETS, THIS ALBUM IS FOR YOU. HOWEVER, SOME OF THE ENSEMBLE PLAYING IS A BIT SLOPPY AND SOME OF THE SOLOS ARE WAY TOO LONG.

5 out of 5 stars The furious fusion of Garaj Mahal.......2005-10-19

Garaj has been blessing my brain for some time now. What makes them so great? The parts; Fareed Haque on guitar is blazingly fast but always has swing, Kai Eckhardt on the bottom with the fattest tone, Alan Hertz with his supple and elastic drums that can snap a song into pure greatness, Eric Levy on keys, soulful.
But the whole is more than the sum; Garaj Mahal has a furiousness to their playing that brings to mind an express train. Their sound can dominate the synapses like no other band.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect enthno-jazz CD.......2003-12-10

The talents of Garaj mahal are enough to entertain anyone who enjoys the funkier variations of jazz, but this CD features a very special guest: Zakir Hussain on tablas! He adds such a mystical, trancendental quality to the complex rhythms of the band. The best things about electric jazz and global percussion are found on this disc!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ferron at her best.......2007-01-15

Next to "shadows on a dime", which is out of my price range; this is my second favorite Ferron CD. I saw her in the mid 1980's in the Bay Area and then in Ukiah, CA last winter (February of 2006).
Her life is a miracle put to music; plus her song writing and lyrics pull my heart strings.
I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars not a still life.......2001-12-16

Every song on this CD has depth and sincerity. I attended a concert in Tampa several years ago, and Ferron featued several of the songs from this album. She really focussed my interest into feminist and ecological issues..I misplaced the CD and really must replace it in my collection. For anyone not familiar with her music this CD is a great place to start! She is a true poetess.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulously brilliantly just beautiful........2001-03-27

I think Ferron is one of those people that have the most power when they're the least, well, powered. Throw her on a stage with just a guitar and...words me fail me. Gorgeous lyrics, too.

4 out of 5 stars A gem of an album featuring three artists at their best..........1998-08-19

Make that FIVE STARS. Run out and buy "Live at the American Music Hall...featuring the live performances of Terry Garthwaite, Bobbie Louise Hawkins and Rosalie Sorrels. A fabulous collection. The album liner notes remark on Hawkins' ability to turn "an ordinary event into a wry musical meditation on life, death and everything in between", and this is also what the album accomplishes. Rosalie Sorrels singing Mitchell's Pine Tree is an enduring treasure that one comes back to again and again. Her voice and lyricism knock out a definitive rendition of this overlooked gem. Garthwaite brings down the house by simply wrapping her country blusey chops around the folksy riff, "Hoy Hoy Hoy". Everyone familiar with the cycle of spousal abuse should listen to Hawkins' solution in "I Owe You One" It brought the rest of the house down. Highly recommended
