5 out of 5 stars Get up and JUMP!.......2007-01-10

If this album doesn't get your toes a-tappin' you need surgery. While not the "best" of this genre, this album is crammed with fun music and it is well recorded to boot! Hard to beat the beat! Intense piano. HIGHLY recommended as an introduction for those wanting to hear what boogie is about. Woogie woogie! Five stars!

5 out of 5 stars Use Cruise Control.......2006-12-05

I was hopeful based on other reviewers, and love this. All of the players are very, very good. Some numbers are solo, others have a band backing up the player. Musical selections are between so-so and FAN-TASTIC! If you listen in your car, USE YOUR CRUISE CONTROL, especially on #4. Katie Webster really rolls on this one, as does her band. I kept listening and my foot kept easing down on the "exhilarator". Next thing I know, I'm doing 20 mph over speed limit. If you like piano with great melody, fast playing (and accurate-no fumble fingers here), with a fast blues riff or a boogie-woogie beat, don't hesitate. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Love It!!!!.......2006-08-11

Great sampler of current blues-boogie!

This is going to be stuck in my CD player for a good long while. Lots of fun and these guys are GOOD! I just started taking boogie woogie piano after several years of classical so I can hear what they are doing and am just so impressed - I can't imagine playing this well. I like fast music and while some may say its showing off - I say 'if you got it flaunt it'!

The difficult thing with boogie is the timing - getting the right hand and left hand coordinated when they are hitting different timings and rhythms. I should say its difficult for me but these guys get it right - sooo right!

Clean recording and not a single track which I skip.

4 out of 5 stars Catchy Boogie Woogie.......2006-03-05

An easy listening CD, with "catchy" tunes from the first track. If you dance to music as part of an exercise routine, this is an excellent warm up CD!

5 out of 5 stars Looking to Boogie, Get this Album.......2005-01-26

I bought this album alongside a couple of modern Boogie Woogie CD's. Don't let the mundane look fool you. This album has got it! I had expected it to be older sounding in quality due to the look of the cover. Happily that is not the case. The sound quality is clean and full and it is mixed very well. In short, this album rocks! (Or boogie-woogies rather, but you get the idea). I have had it in slot #5 on my CD player for around six months and often let it play through after listening to another CD. With most albums, it depends on the mood I'm in. I enjoy listening to this one most anytime and usually just let it roll. If your interested in Boogie Woogie, definitely get this one. Every single piece is a winner. It's all instrumental so you will never tire of crappy lyrics. This may be the only Boogie Woogie CD you will ever want because it just doesn't get any better than this.

Album Description

After interning in western swing and R&B with Cowboy Jazz and Root Boy Slim, Bogart has fronted her own tight ensemble for over fifteen years. Playing dazzling piano and soulful saxophone, Deanna's added the energy of boogie-woogie, contemporary blues, country, and Nora Jones-like jazz to create a unique fusion of musical styles. Her vocals and songwriting are as full of vitality as her playing - savvy, sensuous, and deep.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Multi-talented Dynamo!.......2007-06-15

Wow, Deanna Bogart showcases all her many talents on this latest disc: sexy sax, smoky-bluesy vocals, well-crafted tunes, insightful lyrics, crazyfingered keyboards. Bogart defies pigeonholing, and this album runs the gamut from rockin' blues to piano and sax boogies to soulful ballads to a "martini jazz" instrumental. I keep one in my car for lively driving, and another at home for careful earphone listening.

5 out of 5 stars DEANNA ROCKS AGAIN !.......2007-02-05

I have been loving Deanna Bogart (from a distance) for many years - hey, and her music too! In my humble estimation, this is her BEST album so far. I look forward to her live performances in the MD, DC, PA area.

Having dropped the "Brass Band" part of their moniker for their disappointing Ears to the Wall in 1996, the Dirty Dozen return to their former, fuller-named persona for Buck Jump. And it's a relief. The band is in full bloom from the opening, funk-fueled track, even if the old snare-bass drum marching format gives way to a more standard drum kit for much of the session. With production from John Medeski (he of the vaunted groove outfit Medeski Martin & Wood), the DDBB steps up to blow on a wild array of songs, from "Run Joe," long an item for Louis Jordan, to a feverish read of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues." There's a great balance struck throughout the CD between the old school march-rhythm rave-ups and their more complex compositions that began coming to the fore on the excellent Open Up! Medeski has the whole party right in your face, too, from virtually the first seconds, when the horns blow brightly and never back off. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the fun of it all........2007-03-17

this is incredible music. lively, fresh, with energy flying off everywhere. a wide variety of styles are explored on this disc, from new orleans party music, to more traditional jazz, to south american sounding excursions, to a plethora of funk beats. music doesn't get much more fun than this stuff. soul-lifting genius. buy it and have a party inside your brain.

5 out of 5 stars These cats can rock....knahmsayin?!!.......2004-12-30

As 2 say, this album is a blend of jazz, funk, R&B, blues of course, and some hip-hop to deepen the rhythm a lil' bit more.
Like to say they definitely blow their chops off, knahmean (know I'm mean). This is a excellent must-have and check out Impromp2, Urban Knights, Pharez Whitted, Grover Washington, Jr., Mike Phillips, Jeff Bradshaw, Alicia Keys, Joye B Moore, Rod McGaha, Lisa McClendon, Miles Davis, plus many more.

5 out of 5 stars These guys can kick..........2004-10-19

These guys can kick. Listening to this made me realize that this band had a huge influence on Galactic. Includes two covers, Run Joe by Louis Jordan and Inner City Blues by Marvin Gaye.

5 out of 5 stars This Album HITS!.......2002-01-24

I know this band has done other albums before this. No doubt John Medeski on the organ and in the production booth helped these fellas out. This album will get your head noddin and is good for a road trip. I've seen them live in Burlington at Higher Ground and they were fabulous. I would recommend this to anybody who likes to groove. Also, the live album they did with Widespread Panic is no slouch.

5 out of 5 stars GUTTER BUTTER!.......2001-08-01

TUBAS AND ORGANS AND DRUMS...OH MY! THIS IS JUST A FUN ALBUM AND A DIFFERENT LISTENING EXPERIENCE THAN ANYTHING ELSE YOU WILL EVER, EVER, EVER HEAR ON RADIO. IT'S NOT P-FUNK FUNKY, BUT DEFINITELY THE TYPE OF FUNK YOU WOULD EXPECT FROM LIKE A MATURED, DEEP SOUTHERN, HALFTIME MARCHING BAND...WHICH IS ALWAYS THE BEST PART OF A FOOTBALL GAME, ANYWAY. GET THIS AND EXPAND YOUR LISTENING RESPONSIBILITIES...PLUS IT'S JUST GOOD.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Atlantic Piano Blues Collection Has Its Highlights, But...........2001-01-14

In his liner notes to this Atlantic Records piano blues anthology, "Living Blues" magazine editor Jim O'Neal writes that "The Atlantic team knew what they liked; they also knew what sold." It's instructive, then, that six songs from the original vinyl release -- two each by Little Brother Montgomery and Ray Charles, one each by Professor Longhair and Joe Turner -- remain off the CD reissue 11 years later. Musical archeology only sells so far.

This carelessness of sequencing (two songs each from Jimmy Yancey and Meade Lux Lewis would have made their cases) is part of why "Atlantic Blues Piano" is weakest among the label's four volume blues series despite some exceptional performances. You get some of blues' finest pianists and samples of native city styles (Chicago, Kansas City, New Orleans. But the artists are caught either pre-ascension (Charles on a 1953 audition tape of Lowell Fulsom's "Low Society," Amos Milburn quarterbacking Texas Johnny Brown's jumpin' "After Hours Blues" with a superb intro) or post-peak (Yancey, heard without "Mama," heard here two months before his death with a somber "Mournful Blues" and salute to fellow piano great Pinetop Perkins).

O'Neil acknowledges this in his liner notes. "Most of the pianists represented on this volume were already well-established recording artists by the time they went into the studio for Atlantic," he wrote."...their Atlantic sessions were in one way or another intended to recapture or restore past glory."

That said, enough excellent music remains on this collection to earn partial recommendation. The New Orleans piano style is well-represented by Longhair's signature song "Tiptina," while Longhair disciple Dr. John rocks on a too-funky "Junco Partner" from 1971's "Gumbo." Turner (with ace Kansas City pianist Pete Johnson) provides some classic early R&B with 1956's "Roll 'Em Pete" while Lewis (helped by a young John Scofield on guitar) gallops through "Fore Day Rider" and the ballad "My Chile."

"Atlantic Blues: Piano" is worthwhile for completists, but unfulfilling for casual listeners. Blues or R&B piano fans would do better reading the artist lineup, then finding a full album from that performer.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2001-07-04

When I first bought this album, I really had no idea what to expect. Was it jazz or was it classical? I knew Wynton did both. Well I suppose it's a mixture of both, but however you wish to classify it, "Jump Start" and "Jazz" are great works of art. And the two ballets are very easy to enjoy, and the booklet comes with detailed information on each ballet, and is written in English, German and French. I have also found that they are very easy for children to enjoy. They love the things that Wynton does with his trumpet....the evil, chuckling troll who appears in "Tick-Tock" and "Trail of Tears" as one example. It becomes a pleading child in "Root Groove" and a laughing man in "March". It really is amazing. Everyone who enjoys instrumental music of any kind, whether it be jazz or classical, really should get this album.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars These jazz cd's rock...er...swing...are cool!.......2007-05-10

I bought all five of these at once so I could get "jazz literate" without spending a lot of money. They are a very cost effective introduction to jazz, and you get a lot of classics so eventually you can impress people by telling them about your favorite jazz tunes and artists. Just make sure to change the subject before you have to go into any detail.

Great recording quality considering the source material (old hissy tapes sometimes) and an almost-free price make this an unbeatable bargain with a jazzy beat!

4 out of 5 stars Dabble in Jazz.......1999-09-21

This set was bought for me. I used to eat lunch at small sub shop on Belmont Ave. in Chicago. It was named the Jazzy Cafe. You went not just to eat and listen to whatever Jazz the owner was playing that day but to listen to whatever the owner wanted to tell you. He knew enough about Jazz to be dangerous. His subs would have a different taste depending on the music he was playing that day. He recommended this set to me one day and I never got around to getting it, so he bought for me.

To this day I am very greatful for this set and for the many subs I ate there.'

Put this set in and hit random and you'll get a real taste of the Jazzy Cafe as I remember it.

5 out of 5 stars *****x5 Black Bowl Christmas Trees Globular Clusters.......1999-06-23

Say you're trying to be kool. Your perhaps thinking of inviting some people over to your house. You maybe have designs about impressing them with your worldly tastes. You may even know a lady you want to slice, but you're unsure as to how to get her off her guard. Get this set and all your dreams will come true. The song selection is A+, but some of the old tapes have some hiss that carried over onto the digital format. It is noticable, but primo if you have a mono state on your amp- you do have an amp...WHAT! You ain't got an amp and you wanna impress somebody with your stereo? Nevermind your in the wrong genre`- you must've got to this by mistake. Over the Rainbow, written by H.Carmichael and performed here by "Fatha" Hines on the ivory and Stephen Grapelli on the violin is worth the price of this set. Not to mention Theopolis Monk. Peace

Throughout the history of jazz, mythical places like New Orleans's Storyville, Chicago's South Side, Kansas City's Tenderloin district, and New York's Harlem and 52nd Street were celebrated as the legendary hotspots. Thankfully, this impressive four-CD, 91-track collection featuring Nat "King" Cole, Louis Armstrong, and Benny Carter to name a few, puts Los Angeles's famous African-American enclave, Central Avenue, on the historical map and offers the listener a zoot-suited, jitterbugged jaunt through Club Alabam, The Downbeat, and other jumpin' joints where Hollywood stars rubbed shoulders with hep cats under a pulsating Pacific sky. The set covers an important period in the development of African-American music, from the conclusion of World War I to the birth of rock & roll: from the early New Orleans bouncy brass-band sounds of "Get Out of Here" by Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band and the Spanish-tinged, habanera syncopation on "Mamanita," courtesy of the pioneering pianist/composer Jelly Roll Morton to Lionel Hampton's boogie-woogie anthem "Flying Home" and the killer keyboard calisthenics on Art Tatum's "Tiger Rag." The Charlie Parker Septet's "Ornithology" blew into town on the wings of bebop innovation and hypnotized local up-and-comers like bassist Charles Mingus--under the moniker of Baron Mingus & His Octet on a rare side called "Bedspread"--and tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon's raw-boned tone on "Chromatic Aberration," which previewed John Coltrane's sheets of sound. Miles Davis's cool indigo-impressionism radiance on "Up in Dodo's Room," performed by the Howard McGhee Sextet, contrasts with the harmonic heights reached by the Gerald Wilson Orchestra's reading of "Groovin' High." There is a remarkable fluidity of transition from blues to R&B, as heard in the western wails on "Blues on Central Avenue" by Joe Turner with the Freddie Slack Trio, Nellie Lutcher's hip-bopping, tasty, and teasing "Fine Brown Frame" and the Texas-bred, guitar twang of T-Bone Walker's "Call It Stormy Monday," all of which highlight the sepia-toned, soulful syncretism that formed the bedrock of modern music and the marvelous black neighborhood that provided the foundation for it. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, historical jazz collection!.......2000-09-07

Central Avenue Sounds is more than a compendium of Los Angeles-based jazz from the 1920s-1960s. It's an historical documentation of an age and cultural environment that is sadly long gone and nearly forgotten. Although it stands on its own as an outstanding collection, buy this set with the book of the same title--"Central Avenue Sounds" edited by Clora Bryant (available here at Amazon)--for a multimedia journey back to a unique time and place. Highest recommendations!
