John McCormack - Rare Recordings 1904-1942.......2003-02-15
This CD was most welcome to my collection. I have a fair number of McCormack originals, mostly from 1910 - 1927. It is especially interesting to be able to hear the extremes, beginning and end. McCormack was probably THE singer of his age in that he sang well, everything from Sonny Boy to Il Mio Tesoro. One critic wrote that he never stooped to material that was beneath him, but raised it to his level. It was interesting to me that he did not spring from his singing master's loin, fully developed, but spent seven years as a professional singer developing his skills. We see his promising beginning with the 1904 sessions. If I have a complaint about the set, it is with these transfers. Paul Wolf, in his John McCormack Home Page, discusses the debate between playing the G.T.&T. records at 72 or 76.6 rpm. I would guess that this set uses the slower speed. If this is so, Mr. Worth is indeed right. They sound too slow, almost to the point of slurred speach. Unfortunately, these are the only first recordings which I have been able to find on the market. The rest of the collection is fine and includes many rarities, including unissued test pressings from McCormack's personal collection. As he aged, his voice diminished while his skill as a singer increased. Even at the end of his career, he did not make a bad record. Despite my complaint, I would not deny myself this album, nor should anyone who wants to hear the beginning and conclusion of an incredible career.

Customer Reviews:
Cool groovin'.......2004-02-25
I heard these guys in the back of a coffee shop in Lawrence, KS back in 2000. Small group - myself and a handful of others. It was incredible. Very clean, funky grooves goin on with these guys. They are all very talented of course, but of sharp memory to me is the keyboardist who has mad skills (but unfortunately he doesn't break out on the CD quite like he did live) and the bassist who keeps the bottom end lively and moving - always bumping along somehwere funky.
This disc is perfect for chillin' and working around the house, for a gathering of friends around dinner, driving music... Pick it up and you it will leave you anxious for more. I always play this one straight through - no need to skip anything in here.
Looking for the next release...
"A Family Honored.".......2001-06-14
I am Tobi, grandchild of the Camaro Jones of which the Greyhounds speak in their CD's first track. Their homage to my grandfather brought tears of joy to my eyes because they captured his true spirit. I went right outside, got in one of his vintage camaros and drove quite quickly down the mountains that surround our estate. I ended up at Grandfather's nursing home where I let him listen to the tune. He approved, indeed he did. There is speculation within the family that "Booty," another track, was written about my white footed cat Bootie, with whom young Anthony Farrell would play when he visited me after summer camp. Thanks for the props, guys. I'll be at your show!
I can't wait to hear more from this band!.......2001-05-27
This first album demonstrates great potential I am particularly impressed by the keyboardist, Anthony Farrell, who plays with passion, wit, and spirit. I've heard these guys in concert, and they're a delight! Get back to the studio, Greyhounds; your fans are waiting!!!
These guys need props!.......2001-05-19
The first time I met these guys in St. Louis I had just missed their set at the Galaxy, but they were totally cool to hang out with. I listened to this CD the next day and was so upset that I missed their show! The Greyhounds are one of the smartest groups out there, throwing down the funk, but keeping it simple. My favorites: "Friction," the "Aeroplane"-sounding "I Like," and especially the slow-jam "Booty."
