Editorial Reviews

Jazz Times
This provides an excellent introduction to some of Earl Hines' best recordings over a 15-year period. The "international panel of experienced and respected specialists" has made a good selection.... Throughout, the piano-playing is the vital element, both in solo and in the contributions of a band pianist sui generis. Complicated though it sometimes is, there is much evidence here to show why Hines became the paramount influence on jazz piano in the '30s.

When James P. Johnson made these solo recordings for Moe Asch's Folkways label, Asch gave him the freedom to record what he wished. The pianist took the opportunity to document some pre-jazz piano music, a few favorite tunes, some improvised blues, and piano reductions of his own unperformed concert works. It's a remarkable release, including among the early piano music Jesse Pickett's "The Dream," Scott Joplin's "Euphonic Sounds," and two blues by W.C. Handy. While Johnson's ambitions to mount an indigenous concert music, one melding jazz and ragtime rhythms with classical forms, were frustrated, you'd never know it from these vibrant performances of "Yamekraw--A Negro Rhapsody," "Jazzamine Concerto," and a fragment from "Jungle Drums." The 1996 CD issue includes eight previously unissued tracks. --Stuart Broomer

Album Description

Seventy-four minutes of solo piano from the father of Harlem stride piano. Includes eight previously unreleased tracks, including Yamekraw and Jazzamine Concerto. 20 vibrant performances, including Joplin and Handy, a Gershwin hit, and Johnson's own compositions-1917 Classic rags, a 1923 show tune, newly discovered blues improvisations, and three of his pioneering "third stream" symphonic works. 28-page booklet contains wonderful reproductions of the original LP covers, historical and biographical annotation on the period, the artist, and the songs. Reissued from Folkways 2850. "It was me, or maybe Fats, who say down to warm up the piano. After that, James took over. Then you got real invention-magic, sheer magic." - Duke Ellington

4 out of 5 stars Big Jim's Left hand.......2001-07-27

I found out about James P. Johnnson just recently and I'm a senior. Wow! This album has better sound than some others and a real long serious number which was later orchestrated. Johnson's playing is pure magic, as Duke Ellington says, and if you play piano yourself, you must hear his left hand! Never too much or too little, always supportive of the top line and always just right. Maybe I'm just in the first flush of enthusiasm about this guys stuff, but this makes me want a time machine. I'da like to ah bin there.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Piano Jazz.......2000-02-20

James P. Johnson is one of the most influential and neglected figues in 20th century American music. Best known as the teacher of Fats Waller, he was the composer of "Charleston", THE song that exemplified the 1920s, a writer of serious orchestral works, a magnificent accompanist of Bessie Smith and others, and the leading figure in the Harlem stride piano style. As such, he influenced Ellington, Basie and Thelonious Monk amongst others.

He recorded extensively, but for a long time little of his material was available on CD. Classics has now completed a reasonably comprehensive eight volume reissue, which is a must for Johnson fans. This CD, however, encapsulates most of Johnson's genius in one disc.

The recordings, made for Asch, cover most facets of Johnson's career. His ability as a stride virtuoso is demonstrated in "Liza" and "Twilight Rag", his ragtime roots in Scott Joplin's "Euphonic Sounds", and his empathy for the blues in a number of tracks, the best being "Snowy Morning Blues", given two markedly different performances and the poignant "Blue Moods Sex".

His neglected serious compositions are demonstrated with "Yamecraw", "Jungle Drums" and "Jazzamine Concerto", all well worth hearing in the only recording opportunity Johnson ever received to air them. (They have since been rediscovered and recorded by the Concordia Orchestra, and are well worth hearing. They compare favourably with the grossly over-rated Gershwin).

All in all, this is a splendid disc that does justice to Johnson's multi-faceted genius. While it is a little short of full-blooded stride piano (why was Asch's version of "Carolina Balmoral" not included?), no one with more than a passing interestin jazz piano should be without it.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful MGM Technicolor musical.......2005-09-26

If you love MGM color musicals, do give the underrated and neglected YOLANDA AND THE THIEF (1945) a chance. I am reviewing it from old videocassette, but am sure it is on DVD by now. It was made by the very prestigious Arthur Freed Unit and directed by Vincente Minnelli one year after both men did MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS. And it stars Fred Astaire, Frank Morgan and, also one year after ST. LOUIS, both Leon Ames and Lucille Bremer.

YOLANDA has Bremer in the title role and Astaire as the thief. Actually, Astaire and Morgan are a pair of charming con artists in the fictitious South American country of Patria. Yolanda is a virgin princess who has never left the country and trusts everyone-especially Astaire when he claims to be Yolanda's personal guardian angel. She is about to turn eighteen, at which time she will inherit a fortune she doesn't seem to want. Ah. but Astaire and Morgan sure want it. Morgan is too greedy for his own good, but Astaire is...well, Astaire: suave, charming, elegant. As Yolanda's guardian angel, Astaire is delighted to remove both money and financial worry from her pretty young head. But something goes wrong, and Ames as a mystery figure gets all the money. Now Astaire has to get Yolanda's money away from HIM! Don't worry, this has a happy ending. It is an MGM musical, for heaven's sake. Or is that hell's sake?

YOLANDA has glorious Technicolor production design and costumes, as befitting a Freed and Minnelli musical. Elaborate, tuneful,. and colorful dance numbers include Astaire and Bremer dancing to "Marry Me" and the wondrous "Coffee Time", and the exquisite "This is a Day For Love" sung by children in the opening scene. This is a fun and lovely movie, one I often play on my birthday because it IS so colorful and happy. And if you can't guess who Ames is playing, that is taken care of in the last scene. Running 108 minutes, YOLANDA AND THE THIEF is one gorgeous piece of filmmaking from MGM's golden age.

YOLANDA AND THE THIEF (1945) appears to be on home video moratorium including, incredibly, used video. Request it on DVD, and watch for it on Turner Classic Movies. In the meanwhile, this sounds like a lovely CD of the soundtrack.

    2 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Gem.......2000-06-28

When I came across this CD I bought it Instantly for "Yolonda and the thief". The score is a little weak (which is one of the factors of it's faliure in theaters)but one good song is "coffee time" a swing-type number that has well written music and is a show stopper. The songs "angel" and "yolonda" are okay, but "this is a day for love" is cheesy and has absolutely nothing to do with the plot. "The fleets in" is great for any Betty Hutton fan and it has some good upbeat numbers like "if you build me a better mousetrap" and "Arthur Murry taught me a dance in a hurry". The quality isn't too good. It sounds like someone held a tape recorder to a TV and taped it off the movie. This is probably why the price it a steal. The only way I can see one would by it is for Betty Hutton or because they are a fan off the offbeat but forgotten movie "yolanda and the thief" with Fred Astaire(which is my reason).

3 out of 5 stars Louis Jordan soundtraps.......2007-02-01

LOUIS JORDAN ON FILM contains some amazing celluloid performances, including a breathlessly-fast "Caldonia." This particular version (song #14) of the Jordan original clocks in at a minute and a quarter!

Many of the selections featured on this set were originally "SOUNDIES," a unique but short-lived video jukebox format popular in 1943-'45. Soundies circumvented wartime restrictions against new record releases by presenting musicians on brief pay-per-view movie loops.

Unfortunately, a well-intentioned album concept is spoiled here by audio limitations. Some tracks have extraneous clicks while others fade abruptly. Much of this collection is midrange-only, muffled, distorted in places and somewhat unpleasant to listen to. Only recommended for Jordan fans who don't already have these takes on other albums.
