This compilation of selections from recordings made between 1975 and 1998, including one previously unreleased to create a framework, is a curious mix. All the pieces are slow, and this being the age of the soundbite, none is longer than five minutes except the Romance by Dvorák, who is also represented by two other popular pieces, specifically arranged to include a cello part for Yo-Yo Ma. Half the program consists of "themes" from movie soundtracks, and the comparison between them is interesting. John Williams, André Previn, and Max Steiner are film composers whose juicy melodies and swooping orchestrations are appropriate to the medium, while William Walton was a "serious" composer whose style retained its austerity in his film music. Two single slow movements, from Chausson's Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet, and from Brahms's Third Violin Sonata, make one yearn for more. The latter is the only piece on the disc that can reasonably be called "classical;" as for the "rhapsodic" part of the title, it is certainly justified by the performances. Perlman plays everything, whether by Brahms or John Williams, with the same concentration, commitment, and emotional intensity. His expressiveness is always noble and so genuine that there is never a moment of sentimentality or condescension. The program gives him little chance to display his virtuosity, but shows off his glorious tone in all its variety, warmth, and radiance; the climaxes soar with rapturous ecstasy. His partners and accompanying orchestras could not be better. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
The Greatest .......2007-06-11
Once in a very great while, God creates a musician who even He is in awe of. Itzhak Perlman is simply the greatest violinist who has ever lived. His Violin Concerto (Beethoven) is perhaps the greatest ever recorded, while here his violin expresses the joys and horrors of Cinema Paradiso and Shindler's List, themes not to be missed by anyone.
Enchanting, moving, Perlman is magic!.......2005-04-21
I played the violin growing up and could never imagine it could be played as
beautifully as Perlman can play it. He is unequalled as far as I'm concerned,
but anyone would enjoy this album as it has wonderfully memorable show
tunes like Cinema Paradiso and Schindler's List and the most beautiful
rendition ever of Michel Legrand's If It takes forever, I will wait for you
from UMBRELLAS of CHERBOURG.
It stays in my car CD player where I enjoy it over and over!

Trio rocks! .......2006-11-24
This is another great 2fer from Collector's Choice. I like both of them very much, with a special nod going to College Concert. Recorded in 1962, it shows the Trio sounded pretty much the same as they did in the studio. Their energy is incredible, and the sincerity is unsurpassed. They could kick Green Day's butt anyday. The version of MTA is better than the studio cut, Little Light is wonderful, and I really like The Ballad of the Shape of Things. It's a really funny, unique song, with some very subtle comedy. There's a ton of really genuine, funny dialogue between the boys that doesn't seem forced. Close Up is pretty damn good, too. It was John Stewart's first album with the Trio (you can see him nowadays on The Daily Show on Comedy Central), and it is filled with great songs. Coming from the Mountain, Don't You Weep Mary, Reuben James, Karu, ah, hell, they're all fantastic! Every song is magnificent. Buy this one along with New Frontier/Time to Think, and everything else by the Trio.
Albums That Continued The KT Legend .......2006-07-29
KT fans will immediately recognize these two albums released following the departure of Dave Guard and his replacement by John Stewart in 1961. Close-Up (1961) departed from previous KT albums with only one novelty cut and introduced John as a writer of more reflective songs for the Trio. It produced no singles that charted, but it is underrated in the quality of these studio performances, and its release certainly kept KT fans happy. College Concert (1963) is true classic KT. Recorded live at UCLA, the concert includes a haunting version of Pete Seeger's "Where Have All The Flowers Gone," as well as a mix of songs and repartee that demonstrates why this group was so popular during the contemporary folk era. This CD is faithful to the original vinyl recordings and in stereo as well; remember monaural? The liner reproduces the back covers of both albums, but nothing more.
Not a KT fan already? If you're over 50, these albums should bring back some pleasant memories even if you didn't follow the group. However, you might be more familiar with some of the earlier KT albums with Dave Guard available as double CDs through Collector's Choice, particularly At Large/Here We Go Again!, or Capitol's Collectors Series CD - The Kingston Trio with all 17 KT singles that charted. If you're under 50, these guys reflect a more innocent time in popular music, and they could really sing and play. These two albums could make you a KT fan!
Extremely well done folk albums, they're surprisingly funny! This is great entertainment!.......2006-01-08
Like most of you, if you've even heard of The Kingston Trio, you've probably only heard their most famous songs "Tom Dooley" or "M.T.A." (that was the case for me too). I bought these albums because my dad LOVED The Kingston Trio when he was a young boy (he still has most of their vinyl records), and boy was I in for a surprise when I heard this! There are three great things about this group: the singers (Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane & John Stewart) are great, every song is catchy and interesting, and the albums are very funny! This last thing especially caught me by surprise. I always thought that the Trio was a serious folk group, but, especially on College Concert, they crack several jokes which are definitely not dated at all (this album came out a long time ago). If you're looking for a good folk album with a lot of heart, you can't go wrong with The Kingston Trio (or at least this collection). Having two albums in one makes it twice as better! Highly recommended!
Highlights include:
the entire album!
A pair of Classics.......2005-10-23

Now if only I owned a convertible!.......2007-06-06
This might be the best "crank it up in your car" CD ever, particularly if you came of age in the 60's and 70's and like all the Beach Boys and other classics on this CD. The live recording quality is quite good, and it rocks all the way through. They're about a good as the artists they are covering.
Live Papa.......2007-05-07
Having been a fan of this group since I purchased California Project some years ago I was unsure if the group could once again reach the level of excellence demonstrated in that album. To my surprise and given that this is a live recording the quality is excellent with smooth laying of tracks and that variation on a theme that is synonymous with live performances. If you like quality instrumentals mixed with excellent voacls then this is fantastic value. Highly recommended album.
Outta Site!!!.......2004-09-05
I just got my copy of Papa Doo Run Run's newest CD "On The Beach". It's OUTTA SITE! These guys sound more like the Beach Boys than the Beach Boys do - and this album is LIVE! Yikes! - move over Mike Love. There's 25 songs here - half of them are BBs songs and the other half are pure gold Classic Rock! My teenage kids even love this CD - go figure! This is real feel good cruisin' music. PDRR's "On The Beach" has found a permanent home in the CD player in my car.
Stunning sound. Tight performance. Papa Doo's best yet!.......2004-08-25
This is a live recording of Papa Doo Run Run's performance on the beach at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in August 2003. If you haven't heard this band's Beach Boys-like vocal harmonizations, you will be shocked at the likeness. The performance is full of energy and captures well the live atmosphere in which it was recorded. I am amazed at the quality of the sound engineering of this live recording. The highs are crisp, the bass deep and taught, and the dynamic range astounding - a sure test of your audio system's capabilities! It's as close as you can get to actually being there! I would not hesitate to recommend this to anybody who likes "Surf" songs and "Classic Rock Beach Party" tunes!

Evolution.......2001-01-23
The Duke establishes yet another indelible mark on the jazz world with the release of this stupendous live recording. This concert not only captures the essence of Ellington's artistry; it ultimately reveals to fans the evolution from Duke's primitive, earliest works to the sophisticated, rich arrangements captured here; and evokes an intense aura of energy that is certain to rivet listeners. I have also worn out my LP and am ordering a replacement CD. This is one of the finest jazz recordings you will ever own.
Very Important recording, but sad........2000-07-15
I do love this recording, but only for its historic significance. It is with sad regret that i listened to the concert and realized that Duke and the band at this point were showing a noticable lack of physical health and ability. Paul Gonsalves, although still a very skilled player, just did not have the ability to pull off his classic solo stylings. Many of the other solists showed a similar deterioration. All in all Duke fares the best. This aside i still recommend this recording as it does show the influence of more modern jazz stylings. (i cant say i like the organ playing though) Any serious Ellington fan must buy this CD.
A Fitting Tribute to the Genius of Duke Ellington.......2000-03-19
This Set is Incredible. The Band&Duke are Wonderful.it's a Grand Tribute to one of The Greatest Teachers The Music World Has ever Heard. The Music always sounds so Fresh&Alive.that's The Legacy Of Duke.
Review of Duke Ellington's 70th Birthday Concert.......1999-12-26
This CD not only is an excellent tribute to one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, but it also is a great CD with some of the best jazz music I ever have heard. Cat Anderson's trumpet ability in "El Gato" is just amazing. His range and volume alone make this CD worth buying. The way be nails double and trible high notes, and how he builds off his melody make for a really exciting trumpet solo.
Billy Strayhorn's "Take the A Train" also is a great song. Besides it being one of the greatest and well known jazz piano songs ever, the version on this CD is the best I have ever heard.
I think that it is important to realize the monumental impact jazz greats like Duke Ellington and Count Basie have had on the jazz world. These men struggled against racism and discrimination and stood out in the crowd. Duke's superior ability had made him a jazz legend, and this CD is basically the best of his work.
Overall, this is a great CD with great takes of great songs. Any jazz fan would love this one - trust me. A great tribute to the father of jazz.
This is Duke at his best.......1998-05-31
This was the last great live recording Duke and his orchestra made prior to his death in 1974. Every one in the band just shines. I wore out my LP and had to buy the CD when it was finally released on that format. happy listening

Album Description
In early 2002, classic rock giants America thrilled fans with an acoustic concert of their timeless hits. The concert, recorded at the famous SeaView Hotel on Grand Cayman, features such classics as "A Horse With No Name", "Sister Golden Hair", "Ventura Highway" and "I Need You" to name but a few. America fans will delight in the live recordings of such rare gems as "All My Life" and "Pigeon Song". Featuring the soaring harmonies of founders Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell under the setting Caribbean sun, "The Grand Cayman Concert" is a must-have for every music fan.
Customer Reviews:
America Unplugged.......2007-03-25
This live colection is a two-man 'unplugged' effort - just Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, two voices and two acoustic guitars (or one guitar and piano in some instances) - but the sound is surprisingly full given the sparse instrumentation. The set draws heavily on the first two America albums from the early 70s when they were a trio (Dan Peek's been absent for thirty years now) but the songs still work wonderfully in spite of that missing voice. And the fun part is - you can add your own part to re-create the original three-part harmonies. If you've ever been a fan, you'll enjoy this.
America back to Basics.......2007-03-08
America-2 guys and 2 guitars-(or a piano and a guitar) You can't get much more simple than that-and yet this really 'works' on this live album-featuring some of their old favorites-plus some more obscure tracks as well. The winner here is the superb sound of the guitars and voices-beautifully played and recorded. Even if you have all this stuff already it's worth having just to rediscover the great sound of 'America' as they probably sounded when they were sitting around in a living room writing these classic songs. There's a real refreshing intimacy here. Get it !
The Grand Cayman Concert.......2006-03-04
I like America and this was great cd. It brough out the true voices of America. Anyone who likes America will enjoy this cd.
Great acoustic concert in HDCD!.......2006-02-06
For those that care, this cd is encoded as a HDCD, so if you have a HDCD compatible player, this album just sparkles!
Anyway, it is a great recording and performance of just Gerry and Dewey on acoustic guitars and piano. You will not miss the band, these guys can do it all! A very special recording.
I don't know why record labels don't label HDCD's as such when they sell them.
Great acoustic unplugged set by America!.......2003-07-07
I was very pleased with this live CD. Some real gems to be found here...Windwave, All My Life, The Pidgeon Song, and all the classics like Sister Golden Hair, A Horse With No Name, Daisy Jane, make this a great concert in an intimate setting. The harmonies and acoustic guitars really shine, breathing new life to these timeless songs. I highly recommend this CD to any fans of America.

Chicago and Satchmo You can't go wrong!.......2005-02-22
There is at least one live album of every jazz legend that is, well, legendary. The Duke had his 1956 Newport concert, immortalized on Ellington at Newport, Miles Davis was captured live on the Plugged Nickel set and this is the best live Louis Armstrong recording. I was kind of surprised when Louis and his All-Stars revived the Hot 5 classic "Struttin' with some Barbecue." Louis Armstrong(1901-1971) was a great man and friend(unfortunately, I was born much too late to have the great and honorable pleasure to actually meet him. I just tried to make this more dramatic). Well, there goes the subtlety of this review. Oh, and Mr. Alan Kalter, contrary to what you state every night, Chicago is the greatest city in the world and not New York. The two cities were once neck and neck before New York lost it's way and became America's b!*ch.
Not the best recorded concert.......2004-08-07
Satchmo and the band are on fire and the program is really special. But I have a big letdown: the CD boasts that it is 20 bit mastered and super bit mapping. But nowhere on the cover they mention that on many selections Louis and the band are caught off mike. And since this CD is rather pricy, I felt a little cheated by Columbia/Legacy this time.
Front row seat.......2003-06-08
The mood of this set is infectious. Pops is in top form throughout. I especially enjoy disk 2 where each band member is featured on a track. Just listen to Louis play ensemble style while backing up his other players and his joy of performance and love of music comes right through the speakers. This is not my favorite Armstrong CD but it is by far my favorite live recording. Listening to this is as close as I'll ever get to seeing/hearing this incredible band play live unless as I suspect these guys are playing in heaven and I get in.
A great Xmas..........2002-12-29
WWOZ.com (New Orleans jazz and heritage radio) played this whole show for its Christmas morning programming and just blew us all away at our house. Too busy dancing to get the presents opened! I ordered my own copy, and recommend it highly- it's not just a great concert, but very much of a time and place, and so has a special kind of magic. All the intensity you want in a live show, with Satch at the top of his form. Amazing.
The Great Chicago Concert 1956.......2002-11-16
If I was told that I could keep only
one CD from my collection, this would
be the one I would choose.
The sound and the mood are unbelievable.
If you close your eyes, you are sitting
in a front row seat. This recording simply
oozes feeling and soul and energy.

Torme, Mulligan, and Shearing: Classic indeed!.......2006-07-14
The music on this CD was recorded in performance at Carnegie Hall in 1982 and later broadcast on NPR (the whole concert ran two hours, so this is only a sampling of what went down). Mel Torme is front-and-center on just about all the selections, with Gerry Mulligan's baritone sax and George Shearing's piano not far behind. Some tracks feature just a rhythm section while others have a full big band; unfortunately, at times the big band overwhelms Torme's vocals. Some old Mulligan standards (JERU, WALKIN' SHOES, LINE FOR LYONS) are included with lyrics apparently written for the occasion (at least I've never heard these songs with lyrics before), and the results are good. Perhaps the best track is the swinging LADY BE GOOD, with good solos by Mulligan and Shearing and a nice scat solo by Torme. WAVE has a good Shearing solo and the lengthy, multi-tempi BLUES IN THE NIGHT has excellent Mulligan. The worst vocal tracks are those where Mulligan and/or Shearing join Torme, though Torme alone is his usual master interpreter of this kind of material. It took a while to get this unissued concert released on CD, but it was worth the wait. Nice!
That Irreplaceable Mel.......2006-06-25
As we all know, nobody is indispensable. And very, very few of us are irreplaceable. But after listening to this great c.d. several times, I am reminded that Mel Torme is one of those very, very few. There wasn't a male jazz singer like him when he was alive and kicking; and there hasn't been one like him since he passed on 10 years ago.
I mention this to some, and the response is, "Was Torme actually a jazz singer?"
Hah! Are you kidding? Listen to his version of "Sent for You Yesterday and Here You Come Today", which weaves in Basie's "Everyday I Have the Blues." Or listen to how he sings the three Gerry Mulligan compositions from the "Birth of the Cool" era, "Jeru", "Walkin' Shoes", and "Line for Lyons", and ask again if you haven't figured it out!
Listening to this also reminds me of this major truth: As Bobby Short was to Cole Porter, Mel Torme was to George and Ira Gershwin. Probably Torme's magnum opus was the 17-minute Gershwin medley on "Live at the Maisonette"; but listen to how he slips some Gershwin into the Jobim medley, "Wave/Agua de Beber." Or listen to how the "terrible trio" (as they were self-dubbed) do Johnny Mercer's "Blues in the Night", like a tune from "An American in Paris." And listen to how these three jazz giants do the encore, "Lady Be Good." This is a knock-off of Count Basie's immortal version of this Gershwin chestnut, with Mulligan riffing on Lester Young and Mel doing homage to Teddy Wilson. But then, Torme slips in a quote to another swing classic, Benny Goodman's "It's Good Enough to Keep." Not a jazzman? Giddoudahere!
As I reflect back on this album and all that Torme did over his marvelous career, I think of the lyric "Embrace me, you irreplaceable you." Another Gershwin, as you know. It fits. RC
"Great old melodies" performed in startling, new ways........2006-06-10
This recently discovered 1982 recording of the Carnegie Hall performance of Mel Torme, George Shearing, and Gerry Mulligan is the only known recording of these three giants performing together, and what a performance it is! Mulligan's fifteen-piece orchestra connects the artists' solos and fills the recording with atmospheric effects, haunting beats, and dramatic accents. Torme's evolution from crooner of beautiful melodies, as he was in the 1977 "London Sessions," to a full-out jazz performer just five years later, is obvious through his relaxed scatting and his use of his voice as a jazz instrument--on a par with Mulligan's sax and Shearing's piano.
Containing all the patter of a live performance, the CD gets off to a rousing start with Count Basie's "I Sent For You Yesterday and Here You Come Today," a lively swing song in which the performers are obviously having fun--an all-scat track in which the trio echoes and plays off each other, improvising as they go. Mulligan's composition, "Jeru" features Torme and Mulligan singing together in a song that is almost without a recognizable melodic line, filled with what Torme calls "crazy bridges." A Duke Ellington medley allows each man to solo, but they move back and forth, picking up each other's motifs and ending up back where they began. Thelonius Monk's bluesy "Round Midnight," sung as a haunting ballad, contains two long solos by Mulligan and Shearing, along with much improvisation and many key changes.
One of the most interesting tracks is "Line for Lyons," in which Torme, Mulligan, and Shearing, aided by Don Thompson on bass, recreate the "Mulligan Quartet" of earlier years, with Torme representing the clarinet through his scatting, and the soloists sometimes performing in different tempos simultaneously. The eleven-minute long "Blues in the Night" serves as the grand finale, a wildly imaginative treatment of the Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer standard in which the performers are so in tune with each other that they soar into new realms.
Despite the fact that they are playing in Carnegie Hall, the three stars create the feeling of playing in an intimate jazz club--experimenting with songs full of dissonances, changes of rhythm, soaring improvisation, and non-stop scat. The orchestra, generally sensitive to the solos of the stars, somewhat overpowers Shearing, on occasion, and greater amplification of the piano would have helped. This recording of three jazz greats, having fun at a time when all three were making changes in their styles, is a landmark recording, one for which some small problems with mixing can be excused. n Mary

Vintage Historical Recordings.......2005-05-14
This Pearl set contains the first-ever CD release of the original Paul Whiteman recordings of "Grand Canyon Suite" (from 1932) and "Mississippi Suite" (1927). Both performances use forces (likely 25-30 players) far smaller than what we typically hear today, and the music is performed with extraordinary zest & commitment. These are unique readings "from the source," a quaint and rather eerie trip into the past that's a must-hear for Grofe fans. In modern sound, my full orchestra versions of the Grand Canyon are by Morton Gould on RCA (great sound, coupled with some outstanding Copland) and Felix Slatkin on EMI (which is paired with Grofe conducting his Death Valley Suite). The Mississippi Suite has been stunningly recorded by an ad hoc Dutch ensemble similar in size to Whiteman's. It's called the Beau Hunks (on the Basta CD label - see my review). I think that's by far the best stereo account.
This first-ever 1928 recording of Gershwin's "Concerto in F" has pianist Roy Bargy, cornetist Bix Beiderbecke, with Whiteman conducting. It's slightly abridged, with Gershwin's orchestration adapted by Grofe for Whiteman's smaller orchestra. The performance is fabulous: jazzy, jaunty and just plain exhilarating. After hearing it, I decided to weed both my Previns and the Wild/Fiedler and keep just one stereo account as a supplement: the wonderfully spontaneous Raymond Lewenthal with conductor Oscar Danon (mine's on deleted Reader's Digest, but it's also available on a Chesky CD in great sound).
The "Rhapsody in Blue" (1927) is also abridged (it runs 9 minutes versus the usual 16 or so). This was Gershwin's second recording as pianist with Whiteman (the first version from 1924 was acoustic - this one's electrical). I still find the earlier account more electrifying: Ross Gorman's opening clarinet solo "laughs" a lot more, for one thing. But if the 1924 version is the best-ever, this one is a close second. My two favorite modern recordings: 1) pianist Jeffrey Siegel, with Charles Gerhardt conducting, on an out of print Readers Digest 2-disc set that was better conducted than Siegel's later account with Leonard Slatkin (son of Felix) on Vox, and 2) Leonard Pennario with Felix Slatkin and the Hollywood Bowl Symphony (Angel CD, not available at Amazon but obtainable elsewhere on the internet).
For the Grofe, this set is self-recommending: it's one of a kind. However, both of these Gershwin performances have been issued elsewhere. The Concerto in F is also on "From Gershwin's Time" (Sony MH2K 60648) in a somewhat smoother transfer (apparently it's out of print). The 1927 Rhapsody is also available in an identical transfer on the 2-disc Pearl set "George Gershwin Plays George Gershwin" AND on a 2-disc BMG offering called "Historic Gershwin Recordings" (see my review). BMG's transfer is less noisy than Pearl's. As a hapless victim of duplicated CD material, I own all three.
Highly recommended, especially for the otherwise un-available original recordings of the Grofe suites.
Performances that transcend the medium.......2004-09-19
I was looking for Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F as I didn't yet have it on CD (and no longer own a turntable). Bought the discs by Andre Previn and Oscar Levant. Added this disc on a whim as I'd heard so much about Paul Whiteman. Bottom line: This is my favorite Concerto in F. Makes the full orchestral versions sound almost pompous by comparison. The more you listen, the more you'll be able to "listen through" the limitations of the original 78 RPM medium to the vibrant arrangement and performance that lies beyond. Same applies to Rhapsody in Blue (hearing Gerhwin himself interpret it is an unbridled joy). Kudos to the technical wizards at Pearl for getting every last bit of music out of those ancient grooves - in fact, the little bass clarinet figure near the beginning of Rhapsody in Blue is so lifelike that it's spooky. If you buy this disc, you'll see what I mean. If performance means more to you than state-of-the-art sonics, you're in for a rewarding new perspective on Gershwin. Oh, yes... The Grofe is starting to grow on me.
Finally, a reissue of the original "Grand Canyon"!.......2000-12-25
Finding the first recording of Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite" by Paul Whiteman on four 12" 78-rpm discs 25 years ago was the high point of my music-collecting career--and so it has remained. Over the years, I've waited patiently for this remarkable recording to be reissued (to the best of my knowledge, it has never existed outside of 78-rpm form!), and now we have it on CD courtesy of the saints at Pearl Records, a label that knows how to restore vintage sound without ruining it. Those who have never heard the work in its original thirty-piece (or so) orchestration are in for a major treat.

If you like the "Grand Canyon Suite", this is a MUST!.......2000-06-29
I grew up with the Grand Canyon Suite. It may be the first classical piece my parents ever played on their new "Hi-Fi". The recording was done by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in, I think, the late 1950s. While browsing around for a copy, I found this version by Paul Whiteman. I knew that Grofe' had written and first arranged it for Whiteman's orchestra, but I didn't know it had been recorded. I was immediately taken by it, bought a copy, and then bought a copy for my parents and each of my siblings.
It's a remarkable performance, especially considering that Whiteman led an orchestra of only 25 pieces. His players had a reputation for solid musicianship, and it's evident here. I really enjoy their version of "On The Trail"; it's simply the best rendition I've ever heard. Modern concertmasters tend to "hot dog" the opening solo, and conductors race through the final section. Neither of these sins is committed here.
Part of the charm of the performance is the fact that it's definitely dated. I'm guessing this is the original recording (1932; Whiteman introduced it in 1931). I enjoy listening to the saxophones, muted trombones, and slightly overpowering trumpets. However, some portions were clearly improved when Grofe' arranged them for full orchestra, most notably "Cloudburst".
