Faith was renowned for his musical interpretations of Broadway and motion picture music. These 2 albums on 1 CD were originally released in 1958. 23 tracks. 2003 Collectables reissue.

If you love the Percy Faith orchestral style, you will certainly
enjoy this typical example. The disc is full and the selections are numerous and varied, including characteristic pieces, operetta
excerpts, and even a couple of excerpts from one of Herbert's
grand operas.
BUT - if you're primarily interested in the music of Victor Herbert, then the advice has to be to avoid this seemingly tempting item. The combination of anachronistic arrangements, altered harmonies, and orchestrations foreign to anything Herbert would have imagined or countenanced ends by falsifying the charm and character of Herbert's music. In essence it's more like "1950's Fantasies Loosely Based on Certain Herbert Themes."

This is a very poor rendering of the music of Victor Herbert. I am very disappointed in it and would not have ordered it if I realized that there were no vocals.

Two great giants in the music world Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and Percy Faith (1908-1976), brought together by Columbia Records and originally released in 1958 (C2S-801), received wonderful reviews from the music critics. This is an historic event for Faith fans, a double LP that has all the ingredients is now released on one single compact disc ~ with all the sonic clarity you could ask for.

Great job to all who were involved in bringing this to listeners of fine music ~ very impressive with all original liner notes and recording cues intact. This has to be in the top five of Faith's re-issues, keep them coming, cause there is an audience out there crying and craving more of the same...gotta love it!

Herbert in good hands with Faith renditions.......2003-10-08

Percy Faith, the easy listening music arranger and conductor, pays homage to composer Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and in doing so offers us a remarkable recording of Herbert's oft-forgotten music. Faith interprets Herbert's music with his signature lush strings and sound orchestral arrangements that provide a light buoyancy to the compositions. Especially good are Indian Summer, Spanish Serenade and Gypsy Love Song. But all tracks are impressive and offer good testimony to Herbert's compositions and Faith's tuneful arranging. This is one of the better Faith re-releases from Collectables to date.

"Ambassador to Jazz".......2000-03-19

Who of us has not heard of this "Ambassador to Jazz", and smiled everytime we hear one of his recordings - Mr. Louis Armstrong. This legend forever changed music with his natural style and delivery, probably one of the most copied artist of his time, and never said a harsh word during his stay on this planet. Satchmo's music is timeless, his genius was everyday and life revolved around love of people and playing for them.

This entire CD is truly "Pops" Armstrong at his early best. Sixteen wonderful and classic tracks of vintage Armstrong, we've truly - "Fallen in Love with Louie" and his music!

Saxophone Colostomy?.......2003-03-09

Tenor Badness? Sorry, couldn't resist :-)
This disc doesn't suck, but that's as glowing as my praise will get. Taken in
a vacuum, it does have a few high points, including some really nice interplay
with Branford Marsalis. In short, if this record were by an unknown, I'd
describe it as misguided attempt by an artist who has potential. However, with
Sonny's name on the cover, we're playing a whole different game, and the
expectations are higher. The disc starts out sounding reasonably fresh, but
becomes successively more overproduced as it progresses, sliding dangerously
close to the type of slick gloss that labels like GRP churn out. None of the tracks do
anything to move me emotionally one way or the other - even worse, I'm a fan of
Tennessee Waltz in a country context, but to my ears it goes down here about
as well as ketchup on ice cream. While I've been a serious music listener since
the late '70s, I'm no jazz expert. I just know what I like, and this isn't it.
The man who gave us Saxophone Colossus, Tenor Madness, and figured
prominently in the epic Bags Groove sessions is capable of far better. See Sonny's
2000 release "This is What I Do" for a higher quality display of his recent work.

Even though I've heard many of the classic Sonny Rollins recordings (e.g. "Saxophone Colossus"), I still consider this my favorite. For one, I find it hard to believe how a man who must have been over 60 at the time of the recording could play with so much drive and passion. He sounds very strong on this recording. Moreover his supporting cast seems equally up to the challenge. While the two duets with Branford Marsalis cannot get any more soulful, the guitar work of Jerome Harris is quite impressive on "Tennessee Waltz" and "Sister", while DeJohnette, Cranshaw, and Soskin provide their usual outstanding rhythm support. My favorite track however might be "Little Girl Blue", for Rollins' incredible solo work and the beautiful rhythm support of Harris' guitar and Soskin's piano work: simply beautiful. Finally I very much enjoy the different blends of sounds on this recording, in that one can hear bits of country, New Orleans, blues, and rock (check out Jack's drumming on "Amanda").

My new favorite CD.......2000-03-21

I recently bought this CD after having watched "The Glenn Miller Story" on cable. I didn't know that much about Glenn Miller or his music, although once I listened to the disk, I recognized many of the songs from movie references.

I'm not a very knowledgeable person about music genres or composers, but I do know that I really like this disk. The songs--from the classic Moonlight Serenade to the more uptempo Polka Dots and Moonbeams--are smooth and mellow, and bring the listener back to a forgotten era. I love putting it on while I'm making dinner or writing out bills. As its title implies, the music is very romantic and casts every task in a warm glow. This is definitely the disk you'll want to put on to relax as the tempo reminds you not to rush around so much.

When you think of "Class", Duke Ellington immediately comes to mind. Not only was he a legendary composer, arranger and artist, but a wonderful human being. Ellington's personality and charm was signified through his music, warmth and love was stamped on each composition he was connected with. Jazz was Ellington's claim to fame, but music was his life.

This CD contains such examples - IN A SENTIMENTAL MOOD (1945) - PRETTY WOMAN (1946) - SOLITUDE (1966) - THE WONDER OF YOU (1945) each date indicates the recording period. Highly recommend you give this a listen and you too will be - Falling in Love with the music of DUKE ELLINGTON!

Many of Frank Sinatra's songs of innocence later became his songs of experience. This volume of RCA's Falling in Love with... series collects 16 numbers from the Hoboken wonder's early-'40s years with the Dorsey band. Often ethereal--literally in the case of the dreamy "Stardust"--this isn't the adult Sinatra who'd later transform "This Love of Mine" into a dark night and "Night and Day" into a much more lusty plaint. Excellent album.......2003-06-22

I was falling in love with Benny Goodman 45 years ago when I was in China. Of cause at that time I didn't know who's music it was. The sound quality of this CD really impressed me. I cannot believe that the ~70 years old record can be processed to bring up such a good sound.

"King of Swing".......2000-03-11

Benny Goodman was unofficially crowned the "King of Swing" before he was 30, due to two landmark events. The first was his August 1935 crowd crazing gig at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles, considered by many as the official beginning of the Swing Era. Then of course in 1938, he brought his orchestra and swing music to Carnegie Hall, which is to this very day a never to be forgotten moment in music history. The song that perhaps is most often associated with Goodman is his big hit and classic "Sing, Sing, Sing", but Benny had more up his sleeve than just this one tune.

Born in Chicago on May 30, 1909, Goodman became the first great clarinetist in the history of jazz, perfected a style of playing that is still dominant to this very day. Benny was also a pioneer in the presentation of racially mixed ensembles, like African American Teddy Wilson (pianist) and Lionel Hampton (vibraphonist) were stars in his trio and quartet, they always received top billing. Goodman passed away on June 13, 1986 in New York, NY., he will be sorely missed, but his music lives on through recordings and new artists of today, passing the baton to others in the world of jazz and big band.
