Dawn Upshaw possesses a voice with beautiful bell canto tonal quality and uses the glissando technique, only when effective, rendering this collection of uncommon art songs superbly sung. The entire album is a joy to listen to...

Pretty, but not memorable.......2006-04-29

'Forgotton Songs, Dawn Upshaw sings Debussy' with James Levine at the piano is, to my layman's ear, very pretty to listen to, but not a whole lot to get excited about. If you are especially fond of Upshaw, you must have this recording. If you are especially fond of Debussy, other vocalists may have just a little more to offer. Everything about this recording is 'nice', just not a whole lot to get excited about.

Returning to the Recital Hall: A Soiree.......2005-04-09

Dawn Upshaw is one of the most intelligent and creative and adventuresome singers on the concert stage today. Just reviewing the list of her recordings available and it is obvious that she has paid attention to both contemporary and established composers in a way that is truly refreshing.

Here the program is devoted to the works of Claude Debussy, a composer for whom Upshaw has a particular penchant. Her voice is crystal clear, perfectly focused and yet not afraid to animate when the lyrics demand. She covers three cycles here: 'Ariettes oubliees' (for this listener the most successful on the album), 'Racueil Vasnier', and 'Cinq Poemes de Charles Baudelaire' (contrast these with the recently released Susan Graham version and see what interpretation is all about!).

The collaboration between Upshaw and James Levine is sensitive (if not always the pianism of others..). But the entire recital is uplifting and satisfying for the variation in the songs, recorded sound, the generosity of the disc, and most of all for the musical intelligence in which these songs are performed! Pretty sound spoiled by a bad vocal habit.......2004-05-07

Every voice teacher I have ever had, and I have had many, were unanimous in their advice that sliding into notes is something that must be done with great moderation. Dawn Upshaw does it all the time and to the ears of a trained singer it becomes extremely annoying extremely quickly. Constant sliding into notes is less objectionable if one actually reaches the right pitch in the process. Miss Upshaw frequently does NOT, resulting in numerous instances where she is simply not in tune at all on some notes. Her sliding also creates constant dissonances with the piano which are entirely undebussyesque. If it were Webern or Berg she were singing she might get away with it. Here she does not. NOT RECOMMENDED.

P.S. Since writing this review (quite some time ago), I was fortunate to hear a recording of Ms. Upshaw in a production at the Metropolitan Opera where she didn't do any of her annoying sliding at all - not once - (probably because it was music from a much earlier time) The difference was astounding. It was a glorious performance. It was hard to believe it was the same person. This, more than ever, confirms my opinion that she ruined this recording with a bad singing habit.

Excellent!.......2003-11-26

This recording of Debussy's Melodies are really excellent. Dawn Upshaw's voice is exactly right for this kind of music - light, charming, and lyrical, with real sensitivity to the text. The Ariettes Oubliees are the best I've heard, with the exception of Frederica von Stade. In addition, her interpretation of Mandoline from the Vasnier Songbook is perfect - the tempo, piano, voice, and interpretation are exactly right. My only criticism is that the diction, while perfectly clear, has an "American" accent that is sometimes distracting.

Magical.......2003-06-11

I run a small horse and carriage business and was looking for some instrumental romantic music to play for our guests. I accidentally stumbled upon this album, and was blown away by how great it sounds. It will really put you in the mood for warm summer nights with a gentle breeze. I absolutely love this album, and wish I could find more like it. I never tire of listening to this music!

Jazzmenco and Night Dance were better.Nonetheless was happy to add this disc to my collection.It is pleasant to listen to but lacks the warmth and drive of their two previous endeavours. Perhaps I expected to much from a title such as this. Forgotten Romance is suppose to take the listener to a time in his or her life that was special.In my humble opinion it fell somewhat short of the mark.No doubt others will find the album right on for their memories.I eagerly await La Vientas next release. I am a fan of these artist,as well as Acoustic Alchemy.

Enthusiasts of Russian Song may be interested to note the comments of British reviewers. Classic CD called it a "Superb recital" and commented on Savenko: "He has a genuine bass-baritone voice slightly lighter, more lyrical and wide-ranging than the typically cavernous Russian bass, but with a particularly thrilling quality" Classic FM Magazine placed it within their recommended recordings section and called it "A debut recital of great quality", and Gramophone pointed out "To listen to this carefully chosen recital is to be reminded how consistent the tradition of the lyrical song, or romans, is in Russia" Savenko responds "eloquently and vigorously, and without caricature to such as that old Chaliapin stalwart, Mussorgsky's 'Song of the Flea'. BBC Music Magazine chose to highlight that a decade ago, the songs of the composers chosen here were little-known outside Russia, "but the past few years had seen an abundance of recordings. With so much competition, the quality of the performance and programme is critical, but happily both these discs come up trumps" The other disc referred to is Savenko's recording on another label entitled Russian Vocal Masterpieces Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov Songs.

Savenko presents a fine selection of Russian art songs........1999-07-23

Vassily Savenko is not as well known in the U.S. as his colleague Dimitri Hvorostovsky, but both of them are worthy successors to a long line of Russian bassos going back to Feodor Chaliapin. On this CD, "Russian Images", Savenko is accompanied by the young pianist and composer, Alexander Blok. As Russian art songs share many of the charms of German lieder, including their reliance on the piano's role in the overall schema, Blok's contribution is vital. The disc contains works by a galaxy of Russian composers, including Borodin, Glinka, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov, Rimsky- Korsakov, and Tchaikovsky, many of them in settings of poems by Alexander Pushkin. Although some knowledge of Russian is helpful in gaining a full appreciation of these vocal gems, the disc is accompanied by a free, but serviceable, English translation.

Isserlis & Hough in TOTAL PERFECTION.......2006-02-21

There is a point about this music that Steven Isserlis makes in his liner comments, "the priority of these composers was to communicate." How true! Every moment it's as if you are hearing the most amazing story being told. Eleven different stories, all captivating.
If you listen to the one minute that Amazon offers of the Andante in Grieg's Op.36 (track 3), you will hear the begining of one of the prettiest things ever written, but when you have the CD and listen to the rest of the song it can make you cry. That's how pretty it is.
Then listen to the next movement, you thought it couldn't get any better than the Andante...but you can't believe it, here's the third movement and it grips you from the first note. The story unwinds with twists and turns, each part breathtaking.
If you don't play cello this will make you want to play it! And if you do play cello you will start doing internet searches to find the music! The piano and cello really get into serious passion together. There are passages like thunder and lightening, and others like the world's greatest lovers. The climax during the last minute alone is worth the price of the CD. I can't gush enough about this one.
About Rubinstein's Allegretto in Op. 18 (track 8)...this is one track where the little minute Amazon offers gives you a pretty good glimpse of what follows. It's a great soulful melody that stays with you and you find yourself humming it later on. The ultimate compliment to Rubinstein.
One last part I want to tell you about is the final track, Liszt's La lugubre gondola. The Amazon minute doesn't begin to hint at the depth of this one. OK...you probably know Faure's Elegie Op.24 (it's not on this CD, but is on Faure Works for Cello by Isserlis and Devoyon.) If you like Elegie, you'll love Gondola. It's even darker. More gut wrenching, dispairing and the cello weeps, cries soft sobs or it's storming great gusts of tears. In the middle of Elegie, you get a few moments of what sounds like maybe a fond rememberance or a ray of hope before the final outpouring of pain and the somber end and in the middle of Gondola a consoling voice in the cello part takes over and the piano becomes like a big soft shoulder. Both pieces follow the lamenting, remembering, lowering into the grave formula, in all the best ways. What makes Gondola seem more intense to me than Elegie is the main theme. It's not just sad, it's also a little eerie. The piano reinforces the gravity with chime like chords that take you on in the funeral procession and then down, down into the grave. Oooooh... and then at the very end a few fists of dirt dropped on top with a final sigh. I like that it's the last track because it communicates a finality that would be hard to follow.

A great thing about Steven Isserlis' CDs is that the musicians he performs with are awesome as well, and here Stephen Hough's playing is lustrous, passionate and digs really deep. He has real Romantic style, and is perfect for this music. Isserlis' playing has a beautiful voice. He has gorgeous tone, of course, but there's something, maybe in his dynamics?, that makes the whole drama of this kind of music completely natural. He succeeds in making each of these songs his very own.
In the notes it says the objective of these composers was to move, woo, and thrill their audiences. All of this comes across on the CD, but it would be so cool if Isserlis and Hough came to Chicago so we could experience this music live like the audiences they were written for.

FANTASTIC ALBUM.......2004-03-03

What a beautiful album of chamber music. The Grieg and Rubintein works are especially wonderfull. One listening of the Grieg will have you hooked. Isserlis and Hough are a fabulous chamber music team. Do whatever it takes to get this album.

If you've never heard the Grieg cello sonata, please go buy this recording. It's worth it simply to hear Isserlis's beautiful execution of this work. But every track is well worth listening too, and it's hard to imagine that the Rubinstein and Liszt pieces could be neglected once enough people listen to this recording. The title of "Romance" refers to a style of music, not an imperative for the listener; Isserlis and Hough are never sappy, forced or unclear in their musical intentions. Rather, they are two of the world's best chamber artists achieving flawless blend and unity of expression in these unjustly neglected works.

I would like to compliment Alison on her beautiful playing and Dave cooke for his unique and complimentary arrangement of this album. This album brought John Field into the present age and transformed it without destroying it. I am not a clasical boffin but this has sparked my interest.

Alison Hood plays the nocturnes of Irish composer John Field with a soft, gentle perfection; never jarring or heavy,even in the most difficult pieces. The softly played whistles and pipes lend interest and an Irish touch to several of the selections. Delightful to listen to at the end of a stressful day.

i had the pleasure of meeting this artist recently, and she is just as special in real life as she is on cd. her beautiful playing is only enhanced by her personality which has made listening to this album even more of a pleasure since meeting her. her skill as a pianist is obvious on every track but really comes into its own on 'around the fairy tree', 'a love is lost but not forgotten' and, my favourite by a long way, 'o'er the moor o'er the mountains'. i will continue to listen to this album daily as i have done since last may, and enjoy the memories.

oh my god...what a lucky day for me when i read the reviews on this album and decided to check it out. this young irish pianist plays the music of field in a arranged in a unique and wonderful way by the well known composer and arranger phil coulter...i'm quite sure the classical snobs will have a "field" day with this one but i hope they have the foresight to look deeper into the beautiful playing on this album and realise that this is the perfect way to bring the music of one of irelands best kept secrets, john field, to a new audience. i look forward to the next album from alison hood. not only does she look wonderful, but she plays like an angel.
