Editorial Reviews

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
Reunion time. Blues heavily streaks the head-bobbing music grooved by Smith, Burrell, Turrentine, and drummer Grady Tate at Fat Tuesday's in New York in November 1990. Their versions of "Summertime" and "My Funny Valentine," among more standards, are pleasurable, with the Burrell slow blues "Soulful Brothers" fit for paradise. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

Album Description

The Fourmost were a British merseybeat band from the 1960s. They, like many similar bands from Liverpool, signed with Brian Epstein in 1963 and ended up on the Parlophone label, with George Martin as record producer. With some John Lennon-Paul McCartney compositions, the Fourmost had some success, especially with John's 'Hello Little Girl'. Their biggest hit was 'A Little Lovin' (#6 in Britain in 1964). After that, though, the lack of a songwriter within the band kept the Fourmost from achieving the same popularity that others achieved during the late 1960s, and they soon stopped recording, instead touring on the cabaret circuit. This 32 track single CD features the two afore mentioned tracks plus lots more. EMI. 2005.

4 out of 5 stars It's all relative.......2005-12-23

Hey, this ain't the Beatles. The Fourmost established their reputation as a tight, exciting act in Liverpool alongside the Beatles, incorporating a cabaret-styled humor in their act BEFORE they were forced to go cabaret. They relied totally on outside material, and certainly didn't know how to cope when Merseybeat ended by the end of '65.

What they are is good example of prime Merseybeat, even on a goofy tune like Girls, Girls, Girls. The Beatles did much the same thing with Searchin' early in their career (though, unlike the Fourmost, they didn't actually release it on record, though they did commit it to tape at their Jan, '62 Decca audition). If you buy prudently, this disc is under $10.00, including shipping. There are enough good songs, IMO, to justify the price, and, at 33 songs, you certainly can't say the record company was stingy.

If you like Merseybeat and aren't expecting the Beatles, you'll be pleased with this disc.

5 out of 5 stars An obscure but talented Liverpool group of the sixties.......2005-08-13

Compilations of music by other Liverpool groups appear at regular intervals but although the Fourmost had six UK hits including two that made the top ten, compilations of their music appear only rarely. The appearance of this one is therefore particularly welcome.

Their first two hits came from the Beatles songbook, these being Hello little girl (UK top ten) and I'm in love (UK top twenty). Their third and biggest hit, A little loving, peaked at number six in the UK, Their chart career was completed by three minor hits, these being How can I tell her, Baby I need your loving (originally recorded by the Four Tops) and Girls girls girls (originally recorded by the Coasters). That last hit showed the fun side of their music - it's the kind of song that Freddie and the Dreamers might have recorded. Nevertheless, although they liked to do fun songs (Auntie Maggie's remedy, which closes the set, is another example) most of their music is solid, sixties pop music of the highest quality.

Apart from their own hits, this compilation includes covers of Yakety yak, Why do fools fall in love, Some kind of wonderful, The in crowd and Here there and everywhere as well as many excellent but obscure songs.

If you enjoy music by such groups as Gerry and the Pacemakers, Herman's Hermits and Freddie and the Dreamers, you should add the Fourmost to your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Was hoping for more-no hidden gems.......2005-07-28

I was eagerly awaiting this CD since I had read of its impending release, but I had hoped to read some reviews first. I ended up getting a free promo copy by surprise after I had pretty much decided NOT to get it after listening to the snippets on Amazon.

It wasn't as bad as I feared based on the clips and I was already familiar with a few of the cuts. Beatle fans should know of the connection and the two songs they gave to the Fourmost. I have their original UK EP and the two other cuts on it were nice. So I had my hopes up before I checked out the song clips.

I had been looking on and off for their out-of-print "Best of the EMI Years" CD and am glad I didn't spend any big bucks on it. The two early Lennon-McCartney compositions ("Hello Little Girl" and "I'm in Love") are really good and I'd say a bit more than half of the CD is pretty good. But, like a lot of early British Invasion stuff, I guess the reason some of these acts didn't go farther isn't a mystery if you delve deeper into their catalog.

There are three novelty-type numbers and one was a hit in the UK ("Girls Girls Girls".) One cover song was fairly weak ("Baby I Need Your Loving") and I'd say tracks 5,7,8,11,12,13,15,20,22,31 & 32 are just OK. The cover of the Four Seasons' "Dawn" is no improvement over the original and doesn't add anything.

Some of the few rock songs they cover are good-"The Girl Can't Help It" & "Heebie Jeebies," both Little Richard numbers. It reminds me of getting the Swinging Blue Jeans "Hippy Hippy Shake: The Definitive Collection" CD and hoping to find more cool stuff like "Hippy Hippy Shake" and "Good Golly Miss Molly." Just like here, I had already heard the cream of the crop.

I remember the two original Dave Clark Five LP's I had when I was a kid and being terribly disappointed at the filler they stuck on their LP's. Most tracks besides the singles were either instrumentals or forgettable. I guess The Beatles spoiled me.

If you are a Beatle fan, not a bad buy at this price, especially if you don't have the two main cuts on CD already. Otherwise, no revelations here and nothing to get them noticed from the rest of the crowd of the same era. I had hoped for better, but not a bad collection.

5 out of 5 stars A little different this time.......2003-11-04

In Britain, double albums of sixties pop music have been a regular feature in recent years, include several in the Best in the world ever series, several others in the Heartbeat series and plenty others besides. The same songs come round all too often but this particular compilation has fewer obvious tracks than usual, allowing some forgotten big hits to be included.

There are some obvious songs here, including I only want to be with you (Dusty Springfield), Do wah diddy diddy (Manfred Mann), Oh pretty woman (Roy Orbison), Everlasting love (Love affair), Young girl (Gary Puckett), Daydream believer (Monkees), If paradise is half as nice (Amen corner), Build me up buttercup (Foundations), Locomotion (Little Eva), California dreaming (Mamas and papas) and Hi ho silver lining (Jeff Beck). All of those songs have appeared on any number of sixties compilations (and some of the others are only slightly less frequent inclusions on such compilations) but their sheer quality ensures that nobody minds hearing them yet again.

Some imagination has been used in the selection of tracks by the Kinks (Dedicated follower of fashion), the Move (I can hear the grass grow), the Hollies (Stop stop stop), the Supremes (Where did our love go), the Tremeloes (Here comes my baby), Cliff Richard (In the country), Gerry and the pacemakers (I like it), Herman's hermits (Something is happening), Sandie Shaw (Long live love - not to be confused with the completely different Eurovision song of that title sung by Olivia Newton John) and the Beach boys (Wouldn't it be nice). All these songs were huge UK hits for those artists but generally appear on these compilations less often than other famous songs by the same artists.

Just to make absolutely sure that people who've already got all the above songs, this set includes some songs that rarely feature on compilations of this time. I cannot remember the last time I saw a Don Partridge track, but Rosie (a huge UK hit) is included. Give peace a chance can be found on John Lennon's albums but rarely turns up on sets like this. Let's hang on, Lily the pink, Melting pop, I'm the urban spaceman, Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde, Lover's concerto, Walking back to happiness, Morningtown ride and Excerpt from a teenage opera are just some of the songs that sometimes turns up on compilations, but not as often as they ought to.

So this is a collection that will appeal to those who have lots of sixties pop music already but will also appeal to those looking for their first sixties pop collection.

4 out of 5 stars A SPECTACULAR JAZZ-CHURC ORGAN VERSION OF " LAURA " !!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-29

I purchased this album because I love the ORGAN JAZZ or JAZZ ORGAN !!!!!!!!

This was recorded LIVE at the FAT TUESDAY'S club in New York City on November 17, 1990.

STANLEY TURRENTINE - saxophone
Jimmy Smith - organ
KENNY BURREL - guitar
GRADY TATE - drums

It contains a spectacular version of "LAURA", with a Jimmy's organ introduction & close, that have organ passages that ONLY JIMMY SMITH, TONY MONACO and JOEY DEFRANCESCO are able to do at the Jazz Hammond Organ !!!!!!!!! NO ELSE Organist, except those, is able to do that!!!!!

Some intoduction and close's Hammond Organ passages echo a church jazz style, and if you have the Jimmy Smith 1957 's live performance at the Small's Paradise club ( There is the same track " Laura") or Joey DeFrancesco & Jimmy Smith's live performance at the San Francisco Festival ( CD- Incredible! - Joey DeFrancesco - Concord Label), you know what I want to say!
Please buy this album and you will not repent of having done it !

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-04-21

I keep coming back to this one. I absolutely love the lounge version of Laura. This is a wonderful addition to any Jimmy Smith collection.

5 out of 5 stars Longevity, Consistency and Swing.......2002-02-12

Having listened to Jimmy Smith for some 38 years this album does not disappoint. With long time "Smithers" as Burrell, Tate and Turrentine, how could one come away from listening to this extension of Fourmost without feeling grooved, swung and attitude improved. Great album. Buy it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy's best live album.......2005-07-01

This is one of Jimmy Smith's best albums, and it's his best live album by a long shot. It's got more balls than mid-'90s live albums like "The Master", is more focused than the sequel live album "Fourmost Return", and is slicker and less frenetic than '50s/'60s/'70s live albums like "Live at the Baby Grand", "Paris Jazz Concert" or "Root Down" (which are nonetheless all heavy in their own way). Jimmy's playing is red-hot, the all-star band cooks, and the engineer should be given a medal for getting such a good sound out of the organ--it's arguably the best Hammond sound ever caught on tape. To me, the album ranks right up there with his best (e.g., "The Cat", "Organ Grinder Swing", "Bashin"), and proves that Jimmy could really dish it out live, if you were lucky enough to catch him on a good night. 5 starts, hands down. A great start for anybody wanting to get to know Jimmy, especially if you're partial to raw, live recordings.

3 out of 5 stars Not at their best.......2005-04-21

Having listened to Jimmy Smith for some 30 odd years and having most of his classic albums, I was disappointed when I recently heard this album for the first time. To me the overall impression was of four elderly stars, who have each in the past produced some superb work, coasting and relying on the goodwill of the audience. The biggest disappointment for me was Kenny Burrell, who really did not put together the quality of solos he once showed on records like 'Midnight Blue' and 'Blues - the Common Ground'or on earlier collaborations with Smith, Rollins or Coltrane.
Jimmy Smith also seemed off the colour, with ragged uneven keyboard work untypical of his early Blue Note and Verve stuff. I remember thinking as I listened to it that maybe this is his response to the modern organ players who in at least one case - Barbara Dennerlein - overshadow him.
It's pleasant and okay for car travel but there is much better Jimmy Smith around.

4 out of 5 stars (And frontmost.) The Rush of Excitement.......2005-02-12

As a keyboard player myself, I've always felt contrite, unworthy, and properly chastised when a drummer or horn player has accused me of "rushing" (musicians sometimes refer to it as "climbing out of the pocket"). But doggone it, what a drag it is when musicians get lethargic and stuck in auto pilot, playing "Satin Doll" for the ten thousandth time in the same tempo in the same way. No wonder this music doesn't get the attention of young listeners.

Enter Jimmy Smith, who is so charged with energy he can't contain himself. After each of Turrentine's solos (especially "Mainstem," "Things Ain't What They Used to Be," "Organ Grinder Swing"), it's Jimmy's turn, and he doesn't waste time. Immediately the tempo picks up, becoming so fast by the end of the tune (often doubled, in fact) that the musicians can barely get their notes in for the out chorus of the melody.

But along with speed, at least in Jimmy's case, is the irresistible swing. Jimmy may rush the beat, but it's the "right" beat. Suddenly your feet spring to life and the music iself becomes a physically-felt "rush," not merely a sedentary listening experience.

Jimmy Smith was incredible (the epithet frequently appearing before his name) because he brought a young boy's excitement and energy to the music, and it was something he never grew out of. When I last caught him live in the early '90's at Chicago's Blackstone Hotel (I even rode up in the elevator with him), he behaved like a 36-year-old going on 16 (I realize only now that he would have been in his sixties at the time).

His death strikes some of us as both sad and shocking because, in addition to being a legend and a progenitor, neither he nor his music ever got old.

5 out of 5 stars Great Jimmy Smith live date.......2003-08-26

This is a wonderful session that truly captures all the warmth and intimacy of an evening with the group in a club date setting, at "Fat Tuesdays" in NYC. My favorite Jimmy Smith line up. The chemistry within the group is very, very tight, and the artists are all inspired. The sound is soulful, crisp and highly polished, like 1,000 coats of clear lacquer on a piece of fine furniture. What else could you expect from a group of such seasoned professionals? They take us through a perfectly balanced set, and the whole thing is really one great moment. The quality of the recording is also excellent. The first CD I actually wore out from use. Even gets better after the first 900 times! A must have for any Jimmy Smith collection, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Swinging.......2000-01-14

this swinging live date from 1990 featuring longtime Smith comrades Kenny Burrell, Stanley Turrentine, and Grady Tate, is so groovy you should call a doctor! "Midnight Special" tops the original studio version, Stanley taking a deeply heartfelt solo, with the end of the tune having one of those trademark churchy Smith chords. "Summertime" has solid extremely tasteful backing by Grady Tate, and "Soulful Brothers" is as greasy as it gets, Jimmy doing some morse code stuttering reminiscient of his solo on "The Sermon" in 1958, albeit at a higher note. Smith's pyrotechnics further on "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" when after a mindblowing phrase he yells "Oh My God! " Grady Tate steps away from the drums and gives an interesting vocal treatment on "My Funny Valentine" as well... this is a great recording, pick it up!

The songs on this collection (as with many) are NOT the original versions. They've been re-mixed or re-recorded by one or more of the original group members which is mentioned in the fine print of the liner notes. The only problem with that is that I had to find out the hard way by purchasing this disc and then it was too late. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!
