Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You Can Tell A Man By The Company He Keeps.......2007-07-14

It's difficult to review this compilation without running out of superlatives. The "golden tone" of the title referred particularly to Freddy's alto playing, but as this CD demonstrates, he excelled on the whole reed family. His tone, which was an integral part of his musicianship, made him as instantly recognisable as his more famous American counterparts, and his range extended from outright jazz to light classics.

The saying that you can tell a man by the company he keeps is particularly apt when you consider the wealth of talent with which he recorded, both in the relaxed small-group sides and in the more hard-hitting Swing Orchestra.

The earlier Naxos release was more biased towards the light orchestral sides, so if you have it already it needn't deter you from buying this also. Sound quality is impeccable throughout the 77 minutes playing time, and this should appeal to all those who love the best in music regardless of category.

5 out of 5 stars Benny as he sounded on a typical 1937 evening...spectacular!.......2007-03-29

Wow! Imagine tuning in the radio the mid-to-late 30s and hearing music like this. Well, you don't have to imagine, because that's what this set is--four sequential broadcasts of Goodman's Tuesday night Camel Caravan show on CBS, complete with announcer intro and patter from Goodman and some lightweight comedians. Most of the music is quite fine, although the sponsors felt they had to break up the swing numbers with some silly novelty routines. These never get as silly as the kind of music, say, Kay Kaiser indulged in, but they are forgettable and bring down the musical content somewhat. On the other hand, lovers of kitch may enjoy such items as a Russian comedian who brings swing to the Stepps, or a goofy comic team learning what swing is all about. Then there's an interesting attempt at a singing commercial worked into the program, and since the sponsor was Camel cigarettes we get a number about the pleasures and romance of cigarette smoking among college students. (Back then, even the Surgeon General wouldn't have complained.) It's noteworthy that the female chorus member who acted out this skit was by the following week out of the Camel Chorus and in the Goodman band as the regular girl singer. Her name: Martha Tilton.

But the real highlights here are the hot numbers, which at that time no one could quite do like Benny (and even subsequently it was hard to find equals to that band). On numbers such as Caravan, House Hop, Roll 'Em and Minnie The Moocher's Wedding Day, the sidemen blow the roof down and the band plays with a spit-and-polish that's all the more remarkable because it came in an era before tape splicing, yet they can outdo any ensemble today. With musicians like that, you didn't need to splice. Oh, and let's not forget the exciting Trio and Quartet, with Lionel Hampton and Teddy Wilson on several memorable numbers playing what was at that time cutting-edge jazz. (A vibraharp? What was that?!?)

Sound is what you'd expect for the period, a bit tinny but overall not bad. It's certainly more listenable than the Phil Schapp version of the Carnegie Hall concert, so if that recording has you frightened off of '30s BG, be frightened no more. This is a great collection of live airchecks that belongs in any swing-lover's collection. It should also be interesting to students of the period who want to relieve a typical night at home in front of the ol' RCA radio.

5 out of 5 stars real arrangements, great sound quality, great playing!.......1999-02-17

This CD is great! It sounds like a restored version of the original recordings becuase they are playing the original arrangements (I would know because I have played most of them) and they are great players! The musicians are fabulous. The only complaint I have is what the mixer did to "Sing, Sing, Sing" (he shortened it and jumped around). For under 10 bucks, this is one of the best deals I have seen!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Jimmy Dorsey "LIVE".......2001-04-21

This disc is of a "live" broadcast from the Cafe Rouge, New York back in 1948. As you can imagine the recording technology from 1948 is not all that great so don't expect perfect sound. There is suprisingly little solo work done by Jimmy. The band really seems to swing and definitely sounds like they are all having a great time! This disc will surely be a collector's item for fans of the great trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. Ferguson, 19 years old at the time of this recording, can be heard throughout the disc playing some stellar lead trumpet and soloing on more than one tune. The gem track has to be "Body And Soul" which features Maynard throughout the entire song. Even at his young age, he manages to convey a style all his own. The chart itself is a killer. 2 choruses in slow ballad tempo and then immediately into 2 more choruses in double-time swing tempo and back to 2 more choruses in ballad tempo, and finally a high-note ending. And yes, he does some great upper-register playing! Worth the price just hear what bands sounded like back in the 40's.
