About the Artist
Robert Crawford began playing drums at the age fifteen in Akron, Ohio. At which time began studying with famed Akron drummer Bill Roth. He also joined his high school band where, along with playing with various rock bands, he spent his high school career. Following high school Robert spent a number of years playing and recording with a variety of local alternative and funk bands. These bands played throughout Akron and Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Dallas and Miami.

In 1996 Robert developed an interest in Jazz. He studied Jazz drummers and history and the following year moved to Cleveland. At which time he enrolled in the Jazz Studies Program at Cuyahoga County Community College led by Cleveland Saxophonist Ernie Krivda. The experience proved to be most helpful and inspiring, because during his time at Tri-C Robert was fortunate enough to perform with Jazz heavy weights such as Bill Dobbins, Rufus Reid, James Newton, Marcus Belgrave and Donald Waldon.

After his stay at Tri-C Robert studied with Jazz drummer Greg Bandy (Pharaoh Sanders, Gary Bartz). And began to do a lot of freelance work around Cleveland, getting the chance to play with nationally renown Jazz players like Dave Morgan, Dan Wall (John Abercrombie), Eddie Baccus Jr. (Pieces of a Dream) and Eddie Baccus Sr. (Roland Kirk). Robert also spent much of that time playing with many other local Jazz players as well as occasionally putting together his own groups. The following year Robert got the opportunity to play with blues legend Robert Lockwood Jr. at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas. He also spent that year and the next playing mostly with his own groups consisting of Josh Yellon on saxophone and Gary Hoopengardner on bass and Mike Murray on piano.

The year beginning of the year 2000 had Robert busy writing and arranging songs for his first C.D. release ‘HOW MUCH’ that he recorded in April. The C.D. features saxophonist extraordinaire Gary Bartz (Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner). The summer had Robert equally as busy with his own quartet that headlined the Crooked River Jazz and Blues Festival, and opening slots for Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Spyro Gyra and Maceo Parker.

Robert will remain busy throughout the fall as he has begun studying with Jazz drummer Billy Hart . And prepares for his move to Chicago as looks to further his love, appreciation and success for Jazz music.

Atmosphere's fifth album (not including rapper Slug's numerous side projects) isn't quite as consistent as previous CDs like 2003's Seven's Travels or Lucy Ford, but it's hardly lagging far behind. For all the attention Slug gets as a rapper--deservedly so, given that he, along with Aesop Rock, is a smarter, less pissy Eminem--producer ANT is as vital to this pairing as anyone, lacing the album with everything from the hard knock beats of "The Arrival" to the gospel-influenced charm of "Get Fly," to the old-school drum assault on "Bam." Slug covers ground that he's already been renowned for, a balance of in-your-face braggadocio ("Watch Out"), tunneling introspection ("Little Man"), and a typically reliable ditty about his female problems ("Pour Me Another"). The only real fault is that the album doesn't quite seem to be as adventurous as it could be, but even in playing it (relatively) safer, this is still easily one of the top 10 rap albums of 2005. --Oliver Wang

I'm so glad I "discovered" Atmosphere. They're a unique group and lyrically I think they are one of the best. Slug's lyrics betray a weary soul that is constantly at war with his demons, and finds comfort in bars (Pour Me Another) or the escapism of travel (Say Hey There). Rich with metaphors, his lyrics, which are complemented by some great production courtesy of Ant, are more literary than your average rapper. Atmosphere pleases on many levels. The combination of great beats, wicked flow, and lyrics that move you is pretty rare. Buy this album. It's their best so far.

this cd was ok. seeing as it has only 13 songs out the the usual no less than 15 by atmosphere it was ok. the songs i didnt like, i didnt like. the songs i did like, i loved. when i put it in my stereo, i start off with #5 say hey there. which is there first single and has a video to it. i love how they add a background singer, or a sample for another song in their songs. then i go on to hockey hair. i love that song, it has no hook tho. no problem for me. near the end slug says "what the blood clot? jump shot, fade away. watch these white kids eat it up like it was mayonnaise."

thats 5 and 6. i go on to number 8 which is pour me another. could possibly be another "im trying to get over you lucy song." go to number 9 which is smart went crazy. my favorite song on the cd. slug goes on to say "smart went nuts and rode a unicorn through the storm." then after the hook at the start of the second verse he says "smart went crazy, kiss miss daisy, love you when everday was christmas baby. maybe we should take it back to the way we were still on some what have you done for me lately?!" love that song!

then number 10. my 2nd favorite song titled angelface. "and she loved me more than i could imagine so i waited til she slept and i stepped in the traffic." then goes on to say "angels exist, i've even seen some sleep." i dont listen to 11 because its sort of too sad for me. slug is discussing an incident that happened in a town. sometimes i listen to 12. which is get fly. but i end my enjoyment by listening to number 13. titled little man. which is a father, son, father song.

tho i listen to about 6 or 7 songs out of 13. i love the songs that i do listen to. buy this cd. cigarettes are sort of messing up slug's voice unless it's just maturing but ant's beats are still beautiful. this cd shouldnt disappoint you completely, but you will like most of the cd if not all.

Slug and Ant have outdone themselves in this amazing effort. It seems the duo have taken a step away from the overall message of their previous albums. The lyrics have started to evolve from the emo-like lyrics that their previous albums exlemplified. This isn't a god thing or bad thing. I believe that it was an expirement to see how their fans would react. They still had some of their old formula during this album which is actually a good thing because without it the duo probably would have lost some of loyal fan base that they had aquired during the 9 year run that Slug and Ant have taken.

As for the album itself, I found this to be one of my favorites because of the intresting step Atmosphere took. There was the heavy beat of "The Arrival" and the anthem like "Watch Out". But ths album also had some of the flair of their previous albums such as the sorrow in "Pour me Another" and the lyrical mastery in "Little man" Because of these incredible tracks I give this record five stars.

The future of Atmosphere is still up in the air. I'm not sure whether the duo will take another step forward and become more of a mainstream group or remain loyal to the fan base that have listened to their tracks since the late 90's. Listening to the last track, "Little Man", really makes one think
"You're raps are exhausted, stop it, everyone knows that you've lost it."
If this is indeed Slug telling himself that he's lost it the I don't think that we will see another Atmosphere record. Though this could just be a line that makes listeners think. But my theory is that Slug and Ant will revert back to the lyrics and beats that have taken them this far.

The last track on this album is the tripartite "Little Man", in which Slug addresses the first verse to his son, the second verse to his father, and the last verse to himself. Acknowledging genealogical traits consistent among the three generations, Slug places himself at the center of the three generations in a way that suggests that the father and the son are variations of himself. Thus the piece has a sense of folding in on itself in the last verse when Slug addresses himself, and this abstract idea is reflected by the physical image of the overly self-conscious rapper curled up on an anonymous hotel bed: "rolled up like a naked fetus / come and save him, Jesus / place him back in time before the Reaganomics and Adidas". It's a masterfuly constructed piece, and though the lyrics are more blunt and conversational than philisophical, the abstact nature of the song is captured by the pentatonic, Eastern-influenced music that forms the backdrop for Slug's rhymes and gives the entire piece a quasi-mystical feel.

Nowhere else can you hear hip-hop like this. So it's ironic that, in the last verse of "Little Man", Slug sings this line to himself: "Your raps are exhausted / Stop it / Everybody knows that you've lost it". In fact, nothing could be further from the truth; with the release of this album, Atmosphere has taken their game to a whole new level.

Atmosphere showed early promise on the geeky, lo-fi "Overcast!" (circa 2001), and seemed to peak on 2002's "Lucy Ford" release. Their third CD, "God Loves Ugly", managed to be both completely introspective and almost entirely uninspired, and the follow-up CD, 2004's "Seven's Travels", was a hit-or-miss affair with a handful of memorable tracks and a truckload of filler. By 2005, the only Atmosphere CD I was listening to was "Lucy Ford", and time had tarnished most of the rhymes on that album; with the exception of "They're All Gonna Laugh @ You", the tracks on "Lucy Ford" sound somewhat juvenile today, as charming as they still are.

So I kept walking the first time I spotted this CD in the record store, figuring that Atmosphere was long past whatever brief prime they might have enjoyed a few years back. But when I sampled some of this CD on Amazon, I realized that these guys have pulled off a major comeback from out of nowhere.

The most immediately arresting feature of this CD is the production; Ant has dug deep and come up with a mind-boggling array of samples that gives this record a character unlike any other Atmosphere CD, or any other hip-hop release in recent memory. The album is permeated with a gritty, old-school flavor that relies heavily on fuzzy, distorted beats, gospel riffs, turntable scratching and sampled voice-overs that bring to mind Public Enemy's "Fear of a Black Planet". There are fantastically intricate layers of sound at work here, but never so much that the beats detract from the rhymes. On the contrary, the choice of beats and samples seems more directly related to the rhymes than on previous releases (see the discussion of "Little Man" above) in a way that gives this record a rare degree of integrity. The one notable exception is "That Night", which purposefully stands apart from all the other songs on the album and thus has a sound all its own.

Ant's complex and edgy production seems to be spurring Slug on; his delivery is far more sure here than on any other Atmosphere CD. His rhymes were always intellegent, but there's a more confident flow at work here, and even his voice seems to have more character.

Like all great pop music, this album succeeds on several levels. It has a consistency of character, but enough variety from track to track to keep the listener from getting bored. On some of the songs, distortion or other effects are applied to Slug's voice; on "That Night" he delivers the lyrics in a hushed, intimate tone. As background music, most of the songs on the album provide plenty of bump; on the other hand, discerning listeners will find that the lyrics almost never disappoint, and there's always plenty to come back for.

I admit, I'm guilty of having slept on Atmosphere too long. I heard snatches of his stuff and wasn't impressed, I'd never gotten a good listen to him and I'd never seen him as a guest appearance on any of my favorite rappers materials - so - this is me apologizing to Atmosphere, because I can honestly say that this album is one of the most emotional and impressive releases I've heard in a long while. I give a variety of hip hop styles five stars, it's true. I've heard people ask me why I gave Jean Grae's freshman release a 5 star rating - because it brings that absolutely raw (if unpolished) emotion of a younger, budding emcee to the table. Similarly, an album like Immortal Technique or Murs earns high stars from me because of their crusading messages and clever lyrics - sometimes at the cost of an easy flow or headnodding beat. Little Brother (who I think most everyone can agree is worth the credit,) is a much more light-hearted trio than most the rap music I enjoy. Atmosphere, however, combines a little bit of each three elements.

After hearing this CD, I thought I should go out and buy his older records before reviewing this. I bought "Seven's Travels" a while ago and gave "Lucy Ford" a fair listen. I loved both albums, honestly, loved them. But I feel as thought "You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having" is better in every margin. First of all, I've heard people say Atmosphere's flow is relentless and boring - not true. To me, his flow on this album is much more refined and matured than on previous ventures. The sheer rhythm of his lyrics is perfect, on point every time. It's a constant head-nodder without a break or pause where it isn't needed, which is what makes the listen-ability of this album so entirely addictive. His lyrics this time around are more cohesive - not to say his lyrics have been less put together in the past. It's just that when you listen to the songs here, and compare them to the ones on say "Seven's Travels," they make more sense. Each line leads to another, no awkward wording or phrasing, each line has a point to make, and the rhyme-scheme is flawless.

Last but not least - Ant. I cannot STRESS ENOUGH how much better the production on this album is compared to Atmosphere's previous albums. Don't get me wrong, I've been consistently impressed with Ant's production, on every single Atmosphere release. "Always Coming Back Home To You," "Trying To Find A Balance," "If I Was Santa Clause" - all great production. But the sound here is so much move lively, memorable, even emotional. The melodies and beats compliment Atmosphere's voice and flow to a T. Each track brings with it a musically molded mood that feels built especially for Slug's lyrics. Most noticeably though, the mood isn't as laid back as before. The problem I've had with other Atmosphere releases is the sheer slowness, repetitiveness, or sleepiness of the production. Not always - but often. Here, every song, whether slow-paced or kicked into high gear feels like they have more spirit, and noticeably more melody. Tracks like "Little Man," "Angel Face," and "Get Fly" are jampacked with great beats, solid samples, and beautiful, head-nodding melodies.

The emotional value of this album is amazing. Slug's lyrics are penetrating and heart-felt, and while some people say that "He doesn't sound as if he's having as much fun," I say that it sounds like he's being more genuine. "Little Man" is unquestionably my favorite track on the CD, and is probably one of my all time favorite hip hop songs ever recorded. It's beautiful, haunting, head-nodding, and sincere. "Angelface" is addictive if only for the production, while on the flipside, songs like "That Night" rely only on a solid drum beat and short, melodic chorus to showcase the personal emotions of Slug's lyrics. "The Arrival" is a fast-paced, energetic opener to the CD, but is slightly deceptive as to what you're going to get. Songs like "Say Hey There," "Smart Went Crazy," and "Pour Me Another" are all much more impressive songs on every level. Regardless of what pre-concieved notions you have about Atmosphere, be they good or bad, buy this album. You won't regert it.

I really love Topol in the role of Tevye, but he wasn't in the original broadway cast and Mr. Mostel created the role. Back then original cast albums were usually recorded on the Sunday after the opening. So this is really fresh stuff.

This is simply THE classic recording of a classic musical. I like the intimacy of the pit orchestra over the inflated version on the soundtrack (as soundtracks almost always are).

If I were a rich man, this is still the recording I would own.

What a great soundtrack and what a great play. Once you reacquaint yourself with it, you will be singing and humming the tunes for weeks and weeks....you just can't help it.

Fiddler On The Roof is one of the greatest of all musicals. A flawless book, remarkable score and wonderful performances.
Zero Mostel was one of those larger than life personalities the likes of whom we don't have anymore. Mostel, Merman, Channing, Bert Lahr...they didn't so much create a role as embody it with their personalities, but they were so huge, the result would be thrilling. Tevye was tailor made for Mostel, loud, comic and ultimately endearing. The kind of role he was a master at adapting himself too.
This recording captures all of that beautifully. The entire cast is wonderful. (Bea Arthur as Yente!!) Though some great actors replaced Mostel on Boadway, Herschel Bernardi, Harry Goz, most recently Alfred Molina, etc. and they created different and more realistic portrayals, it was Mostels signiture role and it's a gem.

This musical is so very beautiful. The music is fantastic. Of course my favorite song is Sunrise, Sunset. I highly recommend this recording to anyone who is interested in musical theatre. You can play this CD over and over again for years to come and still enjoy it.

I would give this c.d. 4 and 3/4 stars if I could. Three reasons why it is not 5 is that it doesn't include "Tevye's Monologue", "Tevye's Rebuttal", and (My most favorite song out of the show) "Chavaleh." I could live without the first two but the c.d. just seems to be missing something without "Chavaleh." But otherwise I love this c.d.

P.S. Let us pray the rerelease this album with the missings songs.

I became familiar with this recording of the "The Crucible" back in the 60's when it was available on the old CRI label. It was an exciting piece then and it remains one now. It has been a puzzle to me why such an opera has not been taken up and presented regularly by major companies. The music is appealing--and frequently more than that; the drama is potent and never fails to captivate; it offers wonderful opportunites to a cast of singing actors. So what's the problem?! Granted some of the liberties taken with the Arthur Miller text render certain moments dramatically unclear and the Gershwinesque strains that accompany the slave Tituba's character are certainly a mistake. Still, the work as a whole is an exciting one. Hightlights abound, with the whole of the last act being especially moving.

This is still the only recording available and, overall, it is excellent. The leads perfectly embody the roles of John and Elizabeth Proctor, while the balance of the cast, a few vocal duds notwithstanding, competently fill in the many character roles.

The CD sound is very good and far superior to my old vinyl disks.

If you've never heard "The Crucible," give this recording a chance. It is well worth your time.

This performance is a gem. Just the soaring majesty of Frances Bible is well worth the experience. What a sadly underrated artist. The final duet with Bible and Ludgin is a lesson in passionate, searing drama and full-out singing.

3 out of 5 stars a favorite opera with an old and inconsistent performance.......1999-03-23

I had the privilege of being part of a cast of this opera at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the late 70's, directed by the avuncular Herbert Wildeboor (since deceased). I've always loved the 7/8 hymn at the end of the first act. However, this performance is very uneven, including generally unfortunate singing by female leads, and bad acting (at least) by the person singing Reverend Parris. Reverend Hale and John Proctor are consistently good. And the orchestra parts, very demanding, are well handled. It astounds me that there is no new recording in all these years. I've since seen it done in Pittsburgh and know it's being done somewhere on the West Coast. While Mr. Ward's music is considered cliche by some, I prefer it much to, for example, Moore's Ballad of Baby Doe. Perhaps my affection for it is due to having the opportunity to perform it.

This album was great, hands down. I loved Cassie as Mannie in Degrasse and she is great at acting and singing. However, Degrasse changed her character to a slutty wannabe and I have to wonder if the pictures on this site reflect her or her character. Drinking beer and smoking is really cool if you like that sort of thing, but why is she trying so hard? Mannie is no different from Cassie when it comes to character, so her obvious attempts at seperating her life from her characters was squashed with those amaturistic photos of trying to be cool. Is she even 21 yet? If not, she really should not be broadcasting drinking since believe it or not her listeners are probably viewers of The N which is teen to middle teen. Because of the pictures she gets a 4 star.

You heard Cassie Steele and you thought Manny Santos... Untill this cd was released. This cd is completely unexpected. Her vocal range is good, and each song offers a different prosective in to the, what is now, normal teenage girl's, who goes againist the grains, mind. I'll admit, I brought the cd with out previewing it, but was not disappointed. The title track, "Broken (How Much For Happy?)", gives an all too real look at the state of some break ups today. And, my personal favorite, "Love Cost", is a too real account of what it feels to break-up and still be in love with that person, while wishing you weren't. "Famous" and "Not Yours Truly" show her ablity to completely rock out. She is a brillant song writer and lyricist and I highy recommend this cd even if you never heard of her. And I can't wait for her follow up album.

I was expecting this cd to be ok, but I was wrong........It's phenominal! Most of the songs shock you in a way that makes you ant to hear more. She's done a really great job and I can't wait for more of her work in the near future.

This isn't a bad recording, but the tracks are not the actual performances off of any cast recording of any of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals. The reditions of the songs on the disc are of varying quality. Some are pretty good. Some are borderline awful.
It is a good collection for inexpensively getting a lot of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most popular songs in one place and having them there to be able to listen to get the idea of what a certain song sounds like and is about. It isn't the collection of definitive recordings for certain roles. In fact in a couple examples, I wonder if the performer fully understood the context of the song he or she was singing &/or what it was about. Overall, the album is good, for the most part, if not excellent.

However, the liner notes for "The Essential Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber" is another matter. I don't mean to be unkind, but the author of the comments on the different tracks (one Rexton S. Bunnett) is blatantly WRONG in multiple instances. I don't mean just in nit-picky details, but in major plot details/context of songs, like the fact that Bunnett identifies "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" as being sung by "our heroine" (who he does not even identify by name as Christine Daae) as she thinks about her lover, not as being sung about Christine's dead father. He also says that the Phantom has found his perfect love and "Angel of Music" in Christine... because HE is the Angel of Music who Christine believes has been sent to her by her dead father, and because although the Phantom is obsessed with Christine, that relationship is far from "loving" (even if Christine shows him compassion. I feel like these (and a couple other mistakes) are major plot points to get wrong. A good amount of the commentary reads as if Bunnett might have written it at the last minute, fudging his way through entries on musicals of which he had little knowledge; like what an essay I might write on a book I never read for my college class but had quickly looked up on Cliff's Notes would sound like. In terms of sheer editing, there are spelling mistakes, run-on sentences and spacing errors ("Any DreamWill Do")in the liner notes. Where was the copy editor?
And the most frightening fact of all, under Bunnett's credentials, it says "Harper Collins has just published his revision and updating of the Collins Book of the Musical."
I am being very critical, but I think that for a widely-released CD it is reasonable to expect the liner notes to be at a professional level, as they were most likely supposed to be.

I was looking for a CD of the original performances and this CD doesn't have them. I suppose it was my fault for not looking closer, but the songs just weren't the same. Personally, I was not impressed. If you don't care that they aren't the originals then it is nice to listen to.

This CD is actually pretty good, considering you get 40 songs for less than $16. Let's evaluate the pros and cons.

Pros:

Two classic songs that are performed excellently are Phantom of the Opera and I Don't Know How to Love Him.

Of course you want to compare Phantom to the classic Michael Crawford/ Sarah Brightman version. Well, guess what? This version is BETTER. The woman has a deeper voice than Brightman, and her singing style is just awesome. The ending of this version (you know, the "Sing, my angel of music, sing for me!") is different, but in a good way... I think.)

And of course, the standard for I Don't Know How to Love Him is Yvonne's version. This version is different, but it grew on me quickly. This version has a country feel to it, almost. Somehow it works and sounds great.

There are a lot of great performances in this collection. My favorites include: Heaven on Their Minds, Everything's Alright, Could We Start Again Please, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Buenos Aires, Rainbow High, Only You, Starlight Express, Angel of Music, Masquerade, All I Ask of You, Half a Moment, and Whistle Down the Wind. I think they're all great versions of their more famous counterparts.

Cons:

First of all, there are some technical problems that are kind of disappointing. A few of the songs have a very echoey sound. Any Dream Will Do, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, and There's Me are the songs that come to mind that are the worst in this regard. It isn't really bad, just enough to be slightly annoying, more so when the volume is turned way up on your CD player.

A few songs are worthy of skipping over when listening to this collection. In my opinion, Superstar, Sunset Boulevard, and Gethesmane are the biggest disappointments.

Superstar just doesn't cut it for me. The singer really overdoes it, making it overstylized... really makes you yearn for Murray Head. I can't stand listening to it. Just my opinion.

Sunset Boulevard is one of my very favorite musicals, so I was really hoping that the singer would do justice to its title song. Unfortunately I don't think he did. You can't help but compare it to Alan Campbell's fantastic version. This guy has a very choppy way of singing, when I'm used to it being sung so smoothly. Maybe it would grow on me, but I don't think I'll give it a chance to. However, that last note is much stronger than Alan Campbell's. It doesn't make up for the rest of the song, though.

Finally, Gethsemane. The inevitable fact is that NO ONE can sing this song like Michael Ball. This guy tries, he really does. But he doesn't have the right voice or the right style. So please listen to Michael Ball's performance of Gethsemane if you want to know how breathtaking of a song it can be. It's on the Royal Albert Hall DVD, and I'm sure he's got it on one of his CDs.

Anyway, overall, this is a good CD if you like quantity over quality. Don't buy it for the classics, you'll probably end up disappointed with many of them. Buy it for the lesser known songs. You probably won't like every song, especially if you're a big ALW fan, but for the price, it's worth it.

If you want classic versions of classic ALW songs, you might prefer something like "The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection".

We absolutely love this box set. My husband bought it when we were expecting. I love the book "Guess How Much I Love You" and we listened to the cd both while my baby was in utero and also in the hospital after delivery.

My son is 14 months old and loves it - especially the first cd. It is relaxing and soothing. The words to the songs are beautiful. It works like a charm to get my son calm and to sleep peacefully. It is a perfect gift for a new family or baby shower.

I was pleasently surprised at this CD. The singers were all pretty good, and the music was great. My only complaint is with the 'Phantom of the Opera' tracks. "Christine" does fine on the title song and 'All I Ask of You', but on 'Wishing Your Were Somehow Here Again', she falls a little short of a good preformance.

The thing that impresses me the most on this CD are the 'Jesus Christ Superstar' tracks. They all sounded superb, and I prefer them to my original broadway cast soundtrack.

I was dissappointed that they only chose two songs from 'Cats', one of Lloyd Webber's crowning acheivements as a composer. THe show was remarkably successful and is the second longest running show in Broadway history, only topped by 'Phantom'. Also, I felt the songs they chose were a bit...odd. 'Memory', of course, is a given. But why throw 'Mister Mistoffelees' into the mix? Why not the Prolouge,'Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats'?

All in all, I was very impressed with this CD. I give it 4 out of 5 stars, and I recommend it for any fan of Lloyd Webber's music.

I'm listening to this album right now. It's alright. Very
noisy,trippy, indie..... This reminds me of a more industrial
experimental psychedelic ween. You be the judge on that. I
only thought,"[Square] bubbles," was really good. Plus track 9 is O.K. Songs range 5-6 minutes. Instrumental opening. Spacey
synth. Dreamy occasionaly, like track 1 and, " take take
take."

A friend of mine played The Helio Sequence for me and since then I haven't been able to get over them. This band is simply amazing, and they get better with every listen. These guys are musical mad scientists. The music is complex and demands you attention. And every time you listen you learn something new from it. This album is light years better than anything I've heard from indie-sensations Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, The Shins...

This band deserves attention, they're awesome.

I've had these two young men's first disk since around when it came out and have waited for a new disk in the hopes that they would add more vocals and cut back on the lengthly 7 minute songs. My wish came true. The men are studio genius, they make some of the most wonderful loops in recent memory. I would suggest this disk to anyone who likes involving, spirling songs.

I saw these guys at SxSW and was amazed at the amount of sound and energy they were able to generate for just two guys. I was impressed enough to pick up a copy of the CD at the show based largely on the song 'Cut the Camera' which is also the best song on the CD. Unfortunately, many of the songs get lost in a wash of synth-loops and other effects in a man v. machine struggle for control. The potential is certainly there once they gain enough confidence in their vocals and songwriting to let the songs and melodies breath a little more. Will they be given a chance?

Whatever happened to cause the Helio Sequence to spawn this album must have been some ordeal. Every song deals with corporate masquerading, the drudgery of the daily grind and 70-hour work weeks with potently venomous lyrics. The fact that the social criticism is coupled with some of the most beautiful and densely layered pop music is the real accomplishment.

All of the songs float above your head with multiple melodies from bouncing bass, wailing guitars and synth squiggles, all of which combine to comprise a lush tapestry of sound.

"Echo Blomp" sounds like it is being rained down from Heaven's P.A. system while "Kablerium vs. Obliviousity" is a racing six minutes that could energize a corpse. My personal favorite is "Take Take Take," which is nearly two songs. The first 4 minutes is a cheary dirge that sounds like a spring meadow looks and the final 3:30 or so is a heartbreaking symphony done on synthesizer.

One magazine successfully described this album as a cross between the Beach Boys and British shoegazers like Spacemen 3, early Lush and My Bloody Valentine. If that sounds good to you, then there is no way you'll be disappointed by this album. Unconditionally recommended.

i've had the original release for more years than i will admit. it's as enjoyable today as it was the first time i listened to it.

in addition to the john gay versions are the earliest known versions of the songs and some that came afterwards. for example, the tune of what most people know as 'greensleeves' is played from the first known italian setting (15th century as i recall) to one done in the irish folk style from the 19th century, with gay's version in the middle.

gay borrowed many of his tunes from other songs that were familiar to his audience. where the original might be sentimental or even religious in content, gay would write a bawdy or satiric version, which would have had added interest and humor for his audience.

but don't think that all this impressive scholarship makes for a dull time. the musicians are first rate and the disc can be enjoyed simply as wonderfully played and sung 18th music.

This is a splendid performance of astringent pieces from the original Beggar's Opera performed in opposition to importation of the lush continental style.

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.
