5 out of 5 stars Don't Fix It If Ain't Broke!.......2002-12-11

That could well apply to the music on this cd when compared to the first Ahmad Jamal recording I heard from 34 years earlier. I don't mean to imply that he hasn't gotten better.......rather he has retained the same inventiveness, the embellishments to the melody, the timing and the jazz style that are now his trademark.

There are mostly familiar tunes on this album but my favorite is a lengthy (12+ minutes) original which captivates the audience into clapping with the beat. This one also features some outstanding bass work by John Heard. Another favorite is "Blue Gardenia", forever associated by me with two fine singers, Nat Cole and Dinah Washington.

If you enjoy a good jazz trio or the work of Ahmad Jamal in particular, you will enjoy this!

Not that it should come as any surprise that Marian McPartland--the longtime host of NPR's Piano Jazz and a leading figure in jazz piano for over four decades running--has released another fine album of piano duets, but this one is even more satisfying than longtime fans could rightly expect. Transferring the format of her radio program to the stage of Chicago's venerable Jazz Showcase, Ain't Misbehavin' matches McPartland with the veteran Chicago pianist Willie Pickens, and the result is pure piano-jazz heaven. Right from the opening title track, the chemistry between McPartland and Pickens is electric, with McPartland's more reserved style perfectly complementing Pickens's dense and outgoing playing that at times has him sounding like two pianos all by himself. On "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" the two effortlessly trade licks and accompaniment until their styles seem to merge into a wonderfully united blur, and on "Along Came Betty" Pickens's more bluesy soloing style contrasts perfectly with McPartland's accompaniment. But it's the pair's versatility that really pushes Ain't Misbehavin' into another sphere, with the two not only trading licks on some well-worn jazz standards but also lighting up some lovely solo performances here as well, like Pickens's impressionistic "Spring Is Here" and McPartland's beautiful rendition of "Autumn Nocturne." --Ezra Gale

5 out of 5 stars Communion of two distinct, and fine-aged, spirits.......2002-07-03

Some say that all creativity and inspiration is a communion with God. The precision of science displays how God thinks; while artistic effort hints at the emotional side of God. What we are suposed to do with this gift is, in part, portrayed in the music on this album.

Truth and beauty alternately flow and surge from the shared minds of McPartland and Pickens. The two of them are simply dazzling with each other--picking up each other's ideas, examining them, elaborating on them, merging them in a "wall" of sound and then softly winding down and disengaging in quiet reflection. The essence of jazz is musical conversation----spontaneous and disciplined conversation.

There are no distractions in this dialogue--just the stark beauty of twin and solo acoustic pianos. This is a live concert and the audience is very enthusiastic. Clearly, there is a spiritual "electricity" connecting Pickens and McPartland, which got transmitted to the crowd. Their response is thunderous.

Pickens and McPartland are from different jazz generations. He from Be-Bop and she from Swing. Even though their styles are well individuated from each other--they easily get "in each other's backyard" so to speak. These are old traditions; but the music on this disc is as fresh as the odor of a newborn infant. Though both musicians are "about as old as The Hills", neither one sounds "dated" in any way. This music, like most great art, is timeless.

Their solo works are mini-masterpieces. Willie Pickens' versions of "Spring is Here" and "Paper Moon" are unique and I don't think I have ever heard "Spring" done more delicately and with such quiet intensity--it's a great, romantic, mini-concerto all it's own. I can't hear enough of McPartland's "Autumn Nocturne". It makes me go "Aaahhhhhh...." each time I hear it.

I can only hope that they will do another one like this very soon.

5 out of 5 stars "McPartland & Pickens glitter...are hot together!".......2001-07-18

We all know the distinctive style of Marian McPartland...unmistakable...but let's look at Willie Pickens...plays up a storm on the piano, never stops when it comes to pleasing the audience...Marian and Willie are completely spell-binding on every track...but the stand out ~ "JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS", a Cole Porter tune...the two musicians burn up the keyboard with over a seven minute performance...can only be described as the epitome of two classic jazz-people enjoying what they do best...perform on the piano...so do yourself a favor...pick this one up...spin it, sit back and groove to the best live jazz concert you'll ever witness.

You might try other albums by Marian Partland on Concord Jazz, all worthy of a good listen ~ "The Single Petal Of A Rose" (CCD-4895-2)..."Reprise" (CCD-4853-2)...Plays The Benny Carter Songbook" (CCD-4412)...check out my reviews on amazon.com/music.

5 out of 5 stars Sir Charles keeps his string going; Schneider's a real bonus.......2005-03-12

Sir Charles Thompson has been going for 60+ years now, and it's obvious his piano will give out before he does. The composer of "Robbins' Nest" has starred with Coleman Hawkins, Lionel Hampton, Illinois Jacquet, Lester Young (who dubbed Thompson "Sir Charles" in 1941), Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Don Byas ... well, by now you get the idea. He played with the greats, and this Delmark CD shows he's still doing it very well. Tenor saxophonist Eric Schneider, who's so young now that he must have been in diapers when he broke in with Earl Hines' group in 1978, provides a bonus for buyers of "I Got Rhythm." He's one of the best reedmen around, and Delmark and other companies would be well advised to give him his own recording gig soon.

1 out of 5 stars What's on the CD.......2001-11-16

I can't review it since I won't buy it until I can at least get a listing of the songs, and whether Thompson is playing the piano or organ on this CD. Why don't you provide at least a listing and some details of who the musicians are if more than one, and what instruments they play. Also, how about a sampling of some of the selections, as others in the business do?

        Album Description

Pianist Sir Charles Thompson is best known for his historic 1945-47 Apollo recordings with Charlie Parker and Dexter Gordon ("Takin' Off," available on Amazon), and his signature tune, "Robbins' Nest," has become a jazz standard. A mainstay of New York's dynamic 52nd Street scene in the '40s and '50s, Thompson recorded with Coleman Hawkins, Illinois Jacquet, Buck Clayton, Leo Parker, etc. This long-awaited homecoming, impeccably recorded live at Chicago's Jazz Showcase in 2000, features appearances by Eric Schneider and Art Hoyle.

Excellent tracks, well mastered; lots of presence. All tracks first rate. no duds. Most tracks include piano, sax, trumpet, drums, bass. But not Robbins'Nest. Still, its the second best version of Robbins'Nest ever. The best done by Thompson with more side men at JATP (I think). Have been trying to replace that for years.

          4 out of 5 stars Straightahead and Swinging - 4 and 1/2 stars.......2002-09-03

This is the latest in an excellent series of recordings by baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne on the Delmark label. Payne tells the audience at the beginning of this live recording that they're in for a lesson in swing and he's right. This is great straightahead, swinging jazz that falls into the bop and hard bop category.
In the liner notes tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander speaks of Payne's "economy... and lightness of approach" on the baritone. This is certainly true, but Payne's playing is full of authority and interest (and Alexander would certainly agree). Payne's solos are logical, swinging, and satisfying. He always resolves even the most knotty line and adds real heft to the ensemble sound.
Payne has put together a fine band including Alexander, who is one of the most remarkable tenor players around these days, charging into his solos with great energy and passion. Trumpeter Jim Rotondi plays with a fire and lyricism which sometimes reminds me of Freddie Hubbard in his good days. Harold Mabern is an exciting, two handed piano player, while bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth always keep the pots boiling. In fact, I've never heard a recording with Farnsworth that wasn't swinging at the highest level. Having him on a date seems to guarantee a satisfying, swinging recording.
Five of the tunes (including the theme) are uptempo swingers (though the tempos and rhythms are varied nicely) and two very interesting ballads provide a nice balance to the set. The music was mostly written by Payne (some in conjunction with Farnsworth). The one standard "Here's the Rainy Day" features Payne in a fine flute solo.
This CD is heartily recommended to all fans of hard swinging jazz (as are all of Payne's Delmark recordings).
