4 out of 5 stars Mostly Majestic.......2007-05-17

Most of the tracks were excellent but some were a bit long winded.Tracks by Spencer Wyatt best on the disc and made it all worth while.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent olio of music styles.......2007-02-23

Do you like ethereal New Age? Gotcha covered. Does Boogie piano get your toes a-tappin'? Check. Is Swing more your thing? It's here. All fine reasons to add this sound track to your music collection. As for the movie, I like to think it Carrey's best work. The man has the most expressive face in Moviedom. Regarding the story, it's set in the early Fifties during the rabid Communist scaremongering headed by Senator Joseph McCarthy. One result was the blacklisting of suspected Communists and sympathizers in liberal Hollywood, of which our protagonist Peter Appleton became a victim.

5 out of 5 stars This movie is a slam dunk.......2006-10-29

To hear the roar of the crowd as the player goes in to slam dunk the basketball in the professional sports arenas, this film equals those thrills for the audience as Jim Carrey (Luke Trimble)takes us through the mind of someone that has amnesia and unwittingly becomes the hometown war hero set in 1945 period. Stars abound in this film like character actors Martin Landau and James Wittemore.Boy meets girl, they fall in love, then a twist in the plot as Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is accused of being a communist, similar to the Army McCarthy hearings for those old enough to remember. It all turns out like everyone wants.....Ed Lynch 10/29/06

4 out of 5 stars Boogie Majestic.......2003-08-07

This soundtrack is the best soundtrack I have heard in a long time. Bringing the swing big band music was fantastic.I wish they would have included Pennsylvania 6-5000 in the soundtrack though. This by far is the best movie soundtrack next to Swing Kids. So buy this soundtrack. This is real music.

5 out of 5 stars An answer for a question from Texas.......2003-02-15

Music fan from Texas, Yes both songs are there and as strange as it may sound, those where the two songs that cought my attention when I saw the movie. The one with the clarinet is called "Stranger on the shore" while the one with the piano is called "Boogie Woogie Stomp" I believe. The soundtrack as a whole is flawless and I strongly reccomend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Musical Journey Around the World with Mantovani........2005-02-23

The soaring strings of the original orchestra led by the late great Mantovani are once again presented in this brand new Vocalion release of two of the maestro's masterpiece recordings first released in 1964 (Folk Songs) and 1968 (Tango). Folk Songs from Around the World will charm and excite listeners with melodies as diverse as Aura Lee (what Elvis sang as Love Me Tender) and the sizzling sounds of Hava Nagila. The highly disciplined orchestra under the baton of Mantovani perform spectacular arrangements of "Two Guitars" from Russia and folk songs from Japan, Europe, and the British Isles arranged with such artistry that they will readily evoke from each listener intense emotions. The splendid orchestrations found on the Tango tracks also evoke a variety of emotions, with Whatever Lola Wants, Hernando's Hideaway and Takes Two to Tango, offering playful amusement, and such tracks as Blue Sky, Orange Vendor, and Tango Delle Rose combining captivating tango rhythms with time honored melodies made ever more delightful by the unique, cathedral sound identified exclusively with Mantovani. In an interview at the time of the Tango album's release, the ever perfectionist Mantovani expressed his delight with the musical outcome, noting that he tried "blending fine melodies with exciting rhythms to produce a sound that is stimulating.." Acquire this two CD-set, and new and old Mantovani fans will know the maestro was right on the mark in his assessment of this incomparable musical journey.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most versatile players ever..........2007-05-01

I really have no idea what the other reviewers are talking about when they compare this CD to something by Metheny--one favorably, one unfavorably. To compare this to Metheny I believe demonstrates a lack of understanding of the strengths and subtleties of both artists. Their similarity is only in that they are both guitarists who often perform within the genre of "world music", while also making side-trips into jazz and other areas. Their execution, however, couldn't be more different. To clarify at the outset, I am a huge Metheny fan and have everything he's ever done with the Pat Metheny Group (his solo or duet work has been less consistent), but the PMG is nonetheless more predictable and focused than anything DiMeola does. Metheny's guitar sound is very distinctive, consistent and soft-edged and has spawned many imitators, one of whom is emphatically NOT Al DiMeola. Guitar aficionados, whether they like what he does or not, almost universally admire and respect DiMeola's technique, and he has proven to be a far more versatile player than Metheny, ranging from screaming rock to lightning-speed flamenco to sensitive acoustic and electric jazz. It is the latter two disciplines that are displayed on this disc, I believe better than most other examples of DiMeola's work. Even when playing acoustic or neutrally amplified electric, DiMeola has a subtle strength to his sound that is nothing like Metheny. The solo in the middle of the title track alone should dispel any conception of his being all about speed--it's melodic, emotional and spare, but nonetheless contains a couple of effortless flamenco runs to remind you that this is a special player you're listening to. The work on "Precious Little You", for example, is pretty straight ahead jazz, but contains periodic note combinations that are simultaneously unexpected and smile-inducing at the sheer artistry of it. "If We Meet Again" (Parts 1 & 2) is a truly amazing piece of music, and displays the wide range of DiMeola's talent all at once, the first half being acoustic and the second half electric, and you're almost not aware of the transition on the first couple of listenings. I've listened to this cut about 20 times in the last week, and each time I think it gets better.
This isn't "Elegant Gypsy", and if that's what you're after you're going to be disappointed, but you shouldn't be--you should be amazed and overwhelmed that the man who did that could also do this. It's called "artistic growth", and I believe it's a serious listener's duty to grow as well.

1 out of 5 stars If I wanted Pat Matheny..........2005-03-20

This album was hyped as the follow-up to the excellent "Kiss My Axe", but, with the exception of one arrangement (Casmire), it has nothing to do with the former.

There's a reason I don't have any Pat Matheny albums...because almost all of them sound a lot like this. It's not only the worst DiMeola album I've heard, but it's is among the most boring and uninspiring jazz albums I've ever heard.

    5 out of 5 stars Meola's Delicate Power.......2004-01-21

Meola arrived at a point of culmination with this album. The music is consistent, deliberate, and channeled with what seems to have been a kind of mid-life confindence. He does explore new methods of instrumentation as may be expected with Meola, though certainly does not go overboard musically as do some artists during periods of high creativity. He is speaking from a very deep place, and the music represents his mastery, or display of control rather, over the guitar--and the tracts both blend and emerge as an profound expression of life's more difficult sentiments--"Until We Meet Again", 1 & 2, are good examples of this, and would be all one would need to hear to understand where he was coming from, though the album is complete in this respect--every song stands as an independent expression. This was not a pure American writing this music--he allows himself to reach back into his European memory to produce something more methodic and orchestrated--the intricacies are subtle perhaps, but precise and carefully rendered for sure.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Master Piece.......2003-08-30

This one of my favorite, A true Master Piece.
It can hear an evolving story with plot, A Theme through out the Record. Its more of a mellow jazzy CD, Kind Of A Pat Matheny Sound. A Must for every jazz fan. Really. Great.

      Album Description

It has been said that Philip Glass is the `Godfather of Trance' and evidence of that is found in the remixes that a number of young producers/musicians began sending to Orange Mountain Music as early as 2002. These unsolicitated mixes became the genesis for Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed (release date Sept 2005). This CD presents a very diverse program without any one dominant style. The artists are Androoval from Uruguay, Robert Bell from Australia, Brian Bender from the US, Hector Castillo from Venezuela, Taylor Dupree from the US, Sebastian Escofet from Argentina, impLOG, from the US, Woody McBride DJ ESP from the US, Marcos Romero from Uruguay, Kate Simko from the US, Dietrich Schoenemann from the US, Luciano Supervielle from Uruguay and Dave Wesley from the US.

We invite you to immerse yourself in Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed with open ears to experience a Glass that is reminiscent of the past, but with an adventurous contemporary twist.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This is just awful - I was suckered by the excellence Reich Remixed.......2006-07-23

I just assumed that this would be as equally wonderful, and that Glass' music would be even more translatable into the "trance" genre, or whatever the kids are calling it nowadays.

Sadly, it seems that this was done by junior high kids with a computer and Acid Foundry or whatever that cheap software is.

No creativity, and, oddly enough, not even any real sense of Glass' music still being in the "remix".

I am a huge fan of Glass; I am not a fan of this kind of music, but since I am also a fan of Reich and since, to my total surprise, I am quite enthralled by the Reich Remixed CD, I figured I really needed to give this CD a shot.

What a waste. This is totally amateur, but without the occasional genius that some amateur can manage. Strictly, totally, and banal amateur yuckiness.

      1 out of 5 stars a huge letdown..........2005-12-21

Yeah, it's fun and easy to beat up on remix albums since there are so many mediocre and terrible ones out there... but, wait: here's a great idea... let's give the pioneering, repetitive, trance-like minimalist music of Philip Glass the remix treatment... after all, Reich: Remixed was fabulous... surely the same kind of creativity can be unleashed in this project... But alas, something went terribly wrong here... these are mostly unbearably monotonous, grating, overlong, amateurish productions by remixers who don't seem to even GET (or enjoy?) Glass' music. A real missed opportunity and a huge letdown... ick...

1 out of 5 stars The Ever Recyclable Glass .......2005-11-20

This is just another insipid release from the Orange Mountain label, which keeps putting out anything with the Philip Glass
name on it - even if it is flagrant garbage. Several releases have been issued which about 90% have the same old songs, just performed by different people. In fact, Philip Glass has become more banal and bovine in the last few years because he knows anything with his name on it will sell to the trendy modernistic music crowd. Overall, I believe it is time to stop
      recycling Glass.

1 out of 5 stars Pop music with only a hint of Philip Glass.......2005-10-28

This music should be categorized under the "popular music" category, not "classical". All the pieces have an incessant drum beat typical of popular music. This is unlike any other Philip Glass CD that I have and I have about a dozen of them. Where can I get rid of this?

      3 out of 5 stars Sound Effects.......2005-09-24

When this album was announced, I was quite looking forward to it; before hearing anything, I compared it to the wonderful work done on "Reich Remixed" which takes some daring approaches to Reich's music and does an excellent job (with a few exceptions) of being new and exciting. Unfortunately, Glass Remixed isn't as daring or as good.

Much of the music is overshadowed with Glass's music and themes. It's as if someone was playing the original music in the background and sound effects were added to it. Throughout listening to Remixed, these sound effects got in the way of the music and I ended up digging out the original pieces and listening to them. However, there are some excellent pieces of interpretation contained within: Etude #2, the Tirol Concerto, and the Saxophone Concerto stand out (especially the Saxophone Concerto since I don't care for the original piece).

The other mark against this effort is all the work had to come from the Orange Mountain Music catalog due to ownership complications. This is not to say there aren't outstanding pieces in the catalog, but this restriction limits most of Glass's seminal works from being considered.

As a huge Glass fan, I was mildly disappointed, but I applaud the effort and the concept behind it.

          4 out of 5 stars I Mother Earth Review.......2005-09-29

I Mother Earth is a good band. I think thier album Blue Green Orange is very good. I bought the album because i knew the song "Summertime in the void". I saw the video of that song on TV in 1999. Over all it's a good CD.

4 out of 5 stars Showing Their Colours.......2003-05-15

Is it any wonder that I Mother Earth's least commercially successful album also sparked the most debate of the three? This album took along parts of the "old" IME, like their signature jams and percussion. It also left behind some of the elements many fans loved about them, like the alt-rock sound and their instantly recognizable singer, Edwin. In this "post-post-grunge" gem, it turns out change did them good.

This album often meets Dig's progessiveness and Scenery And Fish's sticky hooks somewhere in the middle, with jams that touch both on the former's technical excellence and the latter's great atmospherics. Loops, samples, and effects add to that atmosphere. As for the then "new guy", Brian Byrne's voice is richer, fuller, more emotive, and possibly more powerful than Edwin's, though at this point lacking Ed's polish on record. Guitarist Jag Tanna discovered his knack for writing perfect mood music and delivering it with a greater depth than the other two albums. Bassist Bruce Gordon often layers his sound with Tanna's in the same way as before, but also in hypnotic, repeating riffs over which the guitarist makes all the chord changes, resulting in a different, interesting sound. Percussion is back in a big way here, with broader world music arrangements and a Christian Tanna who shows the intensity of Dig and the subtle nuance of S&F. His lyrics are even stranger than before, but arranged in a well-structured, aesthetically pleasing way. Byrne himself writes the lyrics for the final track, but it's almost impossible to tell the difference.

This disc has no all-encompassing feel like the other two, and its journey into so many different moods takes away the listen-straight-through quality the other two albums had. However, the thicker bass and lighter guitar tones render even the three or four bottom-heavy riffs stripped of any alt/grunge sensibility, and that is a definite step forward. Each song is great on its own, but doesn't necessarily lead into the next one, thus interrupting the flow. Still, this is a rewarding listen, and paves the way for even greater things.

5 out of 5 stars Blazing their own trail.......2003-05-05

Pop quiz. It's 1999. The Alternative sound of the 90's is out. Bubblegum pop and rap-metal are in. Your band is one of Canada's cornerstones of the former, seemingly obsolete sound. To top it off, the voice (and maybe the face) of your band has split to pursue a successful solo career with a more pop-oriented rock sound than you ever had, and you've picked up an unknown to take his place. What do you do?

I'll tell you what I Mother Earth did - they went their own way. The attitude projected in Blue Green Orange, the band's third album and first with vocalist Brian Byrne, is simply, "We don't care." Rather than playing it safe and going about "business as usual" to show they're the same band with or without Edwin, they go in a new direction. That direction still has their signature sound stamped all over it, but if Scenery And Fish was the next step forward from Dig, Blue Green Orange was a left turn.

Grunge-free rockers do battle with mellower, more heartfelt explorations as prog-rock does battle with mainstream, and the band is equally effective at all of these. There are fewer of the soaring pop hooks found on Scenery And Fish, and Byrne adds a more rock-sounding voice to the mix.

Even the relatively commercial Scenery And Fish took a few listens to sink in with me, and that's the rule here, too. The best thing is to come to the table with no expectations. Then you won't be disappointed that it doesn't sound exactly like the other two records, or any record in that year or any year in the 90's. This one stands all on its own.

5 out of 5 stars Took some time..........2003-02-09

This CD took me off guard at first, as I was a fan of the older IME albums... however, a couple of years after popping it in for an occasional listen, it finally clicked.

This is not Scenery and Fish, and it's not Dig.

This is a CD by a band that had started out with hard rock, and then evolved into alternative... only to hit another level of their evolution with this album.

After listening to this over and over again, and now hearing a couple of singles from their forthcoming album, I see this as a stepping stone to something remarkable.

That's not to downplay the greatness of this album... I think of the three released at the time that I'm writing this, it is their most solid and innovative effort. I simply think that most people were disappointed with it solely because it was "too soft."

Drop your expectations and listen to the band for the first time all over again... if you get the point of this album, you'll realize how wonderful it really is.

3 out of 5 stars Brian is to IME what Gary was to VH.......2001-03-29

I was a big fan of Extreme with Gary Cherone (except for their last album; there was no punchline). And, in the same way, Brian is not a bad singer. But he just doesn't fit with IME, IMHO. I spun this disc at least 20 times and came away each time liking it less and less, which is the opposite of my experience with S&F. I'm listening to One More Astronaut right now and thinking, ok, if IME can't get Edwin back then guys please go back to your list of candidates and try again. Brian will be okay.. in a different band.

Torke (b. 1961) writes some of the more interesting minimalism being done today. His punctuated rhythms are always framed around a tonal, melodic core and are as colorful as the titles of the works. But Torke is a bit more than a minimalist; he knows jazz inside and out and makes use of syncopation and even Modern dance rhythms as in Ecstatic Orange. The performance by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is quite good, but the booklet notes are obscure and of no help to anyone. Still, the music is what counts. Start here if Torke is new to you. -- Paul Cook

3 out of 5 stars New Music for Steven Bochko to love.......2006-11-26

What would Michael Torke do if he ever lost his score for Stravinsky's Symphony In C ? He wouldn't have anything to spice up the Bernstein-ism's with ! But the little Mike Post cadences would still save the day... Eat your spinach, dear ! I say it's Academic Minimalism, and I say the Hell with it! It just proves again, if proof were really needed, that any Avant Garde movement carries the seeds of its own decadence within itself from its inception. Those who find this "listenable Minimalism" should be locked in a room with a recording of The Well Tuned Piano on eternal repeat. Philosophical question: does repeating some cleverly orchestrated trifle in a flaccid loop make that trifle "minimalist" ?

          5 out of 5 stars Beyond minimalism.......2006-04-20

This is music that you can listen without being annoyed. This is genuinely beautiful music, with a great orchestration, with moving masses of sounds that move in parallel with the complex rhytms like brush strokes of an inspired painter.
This is simple, but not naive, since the structural complexity is extreme, despite the appearance (and this is another achievement). Torke is one of the most personal voices of new postminimalist music. And this is Torke at its best! Definitely a must for anybody interested in modern music...

3 out of 5 stars Interesting minimalism, if there is such a thing.......2003-10-07

"You know, I'm no art critic, but I know what I hate. And I don't hate this." --- C. Montgomery Burns, from "Brush With Greatness."

That about sums it up. As minimalism goes, this pieces are some of the more engaging examples of the genre. It still contains the repetitive rhythms & chord progressions, so beloved by the devotees of minimalism, spun out in innumerable variations for several minutes. But the music remains strangely engaging despite its minimalist qualities. I found that the energy in "Green," "Ecstatic Orange," and "Bright Blue Music" overcomes the repetitive qualities, and is enough to keep all but the most fervent haters of minimalism interested. I cannot say the same for "Ash," with its classically-inspired chord progressions, which became really irritating to listen to after just a few minutes. It would figure that "Ash" is the longest piece on this album.

3 1/2 stars --- catalogue it under "Minimalist music that isn't totally annoying."

5 out of 5 stars Elemental and Complete.......2003-04-04

Yes, two of the five works here also appear on the Javelin album. That leaves three works uncovered: Purple, Ash, and Ecstatic Orange. So the choice to acquire this album in addition to Javelin is ultimately driven by a referendum on the merit of these three works in their own right. For my money, the acquisition of this earlier album is more than justified by the presence of Ash. What makes Ash distinctive is the clever Beethovenian conceit that Torke dishes up. The illusion of linear progress is created in individual sections, but at the macro level this sense of purpose, like water to a thirsty Tantalus, is pulled away. Form follows function, however, and Torke is putting the Beethovenian idiom to an entirely different use than the archetype did. This is assuredly not parody, but a transmutation in the service of a fresh, modern aesthetic. It's as if the IDEA of Debussy's impressionism is being realized with Beethovenesque building blocks (cobbled from the idiom farthest removed from Debussy's).

On this album, the best works are Green, Ash, and Bright Blue music, in that order. Ecstatic Orange stands out as the dissonant member of the set, while Purple comes off as an effective interlude (a breather, as it were) bridging the effervescent Green to Ecstatic Orange. While some have inferred associative relationships between music and color on Torke's part, I don't think we should lump him in with Scriabin on this account. I've written a series of compositions named after Los Angeles area freeways, but there is no deeper meaning to be sought in that circumstance.

With the recent release of "Jasper" on Naxos, it's no longer true that all the orchestral Color Music of Torke's can be found on this one album. But the best selection of it is surely to be found on this CD...

I do not imbibe when I listen to music. I suspect that one could enjoy this drivel if one smoked enough [...] or consumed enough alcohol. Otherwise, you may find this drivel to be almost utterly worthless. I should think anyone with the power of discernment in matters of music would avoid this CD the plague. Wait, I am being unreasonably harsh on the plague.
