Steve Oliver Has so much Talent, He write's his own music, sings, play's and produces great music. Radiant is great addition to anyone's music collection.

What happened to Steve Oliver?.......2006-09-16

Used to be you could count on Oliver to deliver a solid album of guitar-based smooth jazz, uplifting tunes that made you reach for the volume control, tap your foot, and sing along to the lilting guitar lines.

This latest effort is his weakest to date, a mistitled album that seems to have been made on autopilot; the only radiance to be found is in the backlight used in the cover art. There's only one song here that rivals any of the best songs from his 2002 release, Positive Energy, a song called Good to Go that is in fact a pastiche of High Noon.

The rest of the album is uninspired smooth jazz. Play it in the background and the only thing that will catch your attention are the three saccharine vocal tracks. I give it a 2, instead of a 1, for being inoffensive background music.

If you haven't yet purchased any recordings from Steve Oliver, start with Positive Energy, one of the best contemporary jazz albums of the 00's. Leave Radiant in the bin.

Good to Go!.......2006-03-26

The smooth Jazz hit `Good to Go' is the best way to describe this new project for Steve Oliver. The guitarist puts you into a feel good mood right from the outset on the cut `Feeling Good'. The smooth work on `Tradewinds' lures you into a somewhat funky groove. 'Cool' definitely lives up to it name and his rendition of Buffalo Springfield's 'For What it's Worth' is quite impressive. Equally impressive is the talent accompanying him on the project, featuring: former Al Jarreau saxophonist Michael Paulo, Spyro Gyra's Keyboardist Tom Schuman, Bassist Gerald Veasley and Stevie Wonders trumpet player Steve Madeao. This CD adds a little pop flavor to the mix with `Bend or Break'. A softer side of Steve Oliver is manifested in `Shine' and `Across the Water'. Putting all these factors together for the Radiant project, I can truly say this album is `Good to Go'! ~the JazzeOne

A perfect portal into the sound world of medieval Russia, this selection of liturgical material, drawn from a tradition harking back to the 11th century, includes unadorned monophonic chant as well as ceremonial pieces in polyphonic styles developed in the 16th and 17th centuries, the sonorities of the former occasionally creating enjoyably spooky, ringing overtones in the generous acoustic. The men of Deisus sing with an almost visceral depth of commitment and, as might be expected, the low basses are profoundly in a class of their own.

The best Russian choral CD of the season.......2002-02-09

This disk is a must for every lover of male Russian choirs! Don't get confused by the name of the choir (I assume it is based on Greek deisis `prayer') or the commercial design of the booklet: this is simply the very best of Russian choral chant that has been published this season. The fourteen singers of the choir perform ancient chants, that have partly been deciphered here for the first time, and so are absolutely unique. Because of the high quality of singing and the choice of repertoire, Deisus can be compared with leading choirs such as the famous Patriarchate Choir of Mr.Grindenko. The chants performed on this splendid disk, all in honour of the Virgin Mary, are either homophonic or polyphonic, in a pleasant alternation. They share the quality of monastic austerity that makes them absolutely captivating: the listener is transposed to another world, a world of quiet and piece. Warmly recommended!

Astonishing Recording!.......2002-02-05

Anyone who hasn't heard Russian chants performed by deep voices has a real delight ahead and a profound musical experience. This recording captivates from beginning to end. The voices of the Deisus Choir, singing heretofore unpublished chants, took this listener onto a soundscape he didn't know existed. The choir emerges like the breath of God and rolls on in a vibrant acoustic that's perfectly suited to the voices, which resonate as much in the solar plexus as in the ear. I've collected a good number of recordings of chants (including the best-selling disc of the Spanish monks that came out some years ago), but the present recording by the Deisus Choir is now at the top of my list.

Grooves in the the Turrentine tradition.......2006-12-04

First I have to say that i really like Anton Schwartz sax playing. The only objection that I might have is that his own personal voice and "language" could have been more stringent, Anyhow Schwartz can really groove and swing and he must have been listening quite a lot to Stanley Turrentine and to some extent also to Joshua Redman,,two masters of groove.The Turrentine influence is very obvoius in the medium shuffle groove "Blues for Now" where he plays with great confidence,,where Peter Bernstein sets the groove with a wonderfully focused "Grant Green" inspired solo.
Anyway,,,I am very happy to see someone that bring forward the bluesflavoured sax tradition and do it in such a appealing way. as Schwartz is doing here...and I doubt I have ever heard Bernstein swings harder than on this session,,he is just great here.Pianoplayer Taylor Eigsti is a new aqquintance for me..I dig his playing a bit McCoy Tyner mixed with a bit Wynton Kelly (in my ears) great playing.

If you like groove /soulful hardbop the way it was done in the Blue Note Sessions in the sixties,,well this is something for you.

Wow! Jazz at it's best!.......2006-08-26

I'm a jazz collector with over 600 jazz CDs and I put this one in my top category. Why? Because like the other CDs in my top category each musician is outstanding and the whole becomes greater than the parts (a la "Kind of Blue" with Miles, Coltrane, Cannonball, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, etc.). Schwartz has never sounded better, Peter Bernstein is incredible on guitar (& I'm not even a big fan of jazz guitar), and Taylor Eigsti is a force to be reckoned with on piano. Don't miss it!

Going for Baroque.......2003-01-09

Here lies master collection from ten years and fifty discs of examples from baroque era performed by choirs, soloists and instrumentalists.

Conducted by energetic Robert King and his King's Consort, this is just superb!

It will introduce one to baroque or add to one's enjoyment. Especially enjoyed Purcell's "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and Gabrieli's "Salvator noster."

Truly Radiant.......2004-01-23

This is a beautiful work. This very skilled choir has exceptional tone, and the director knows how to get the best out of his singers in each piece. Franz Biebl's Ave Maria was written for men's choir, but the SATB version here outshines them all. Lauriden's O Magnum Mysterium shimmers as its complex harmonies weave among the parts. You will not be disappointed in this CD!

I bought this for the recording of Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium"; as a singer I have performed this along with other pieces on the CD. I was impressed by all of it. The choir has wonderful dynamic control and great expression. And yes, the Lauridsen moved me to tears as it always does when I sing it. This CD is a must for any lover of beautiful modern choral music

a glorious listening experience!.......2000-04-06

"...sixty-five auditioned volunteers and seven professional singers..."--that's how the CD booklet describes the make-up of Trinity Church-Boston's choir. It's clear from even the most superficial listening that this choir has been able to attract truly talented volunteers. But bringing a mostly volunteer choir to the level of musical attainment evident on this CD requires a director with a number of extraordinary skills: creating a rehearsal ambience with the right mix of challenges and rewards, immense musical sensitivity, intimate knowledge of the human voice's problems and potential, to say nothing of well-honed people skills and great patience. Brian Jones, Trinity Choir's director, obviously has these skills in abundance, and the results are evident on this CD. Perhaps the foremost of all this CD's sterling qualities is the musicality of ensemble--not merely being in perfect sync, but sensing as a corporate entity the subtle gestures, the rise and fall, the ebb and flow of the music. This is choral music at it's most satisfying. The recorded works are all wonderful--but I do believe that Trinity Church Choir and Brian Jones could send us into raptures with a performance of "Mary had a little lamb!"

Worthy buying if you love sacred choral music!.......2000-03-02

A most enjoyable CD. There's nothing atonal here but a diverse and interesting choice of mainstream modern anthems, performing with loving attention to details of diction, tuning, phrasing and expression. Patrick Gowers' 'Viri Galilaei' is a particular tour de force, with impressive sustained increase in tension up to the joyful chorale section, and a beautifully controlled final Alleluia. The polychoral contrasts in Randall Thompson's unaccompanied 'Have ye not known' are also very effective. But there are lots of goodies in this CD. A worthy addition to the library of any lover of sacred choral music. But why is it not available in UK?

Too exceptional to be a mere representative of joik........2002-08-06

Based on the other cds of Mari Boine's I have, I think this cd is a compilation of tracks available elsewhere--at least several of the tracks are on other cds. It is still entirely worth getting considering the difficulty of finding her work in America.

I won't use this review to go on about joik, suffice it to say it is a song/vocal tradition of the indigenous people of parts of Scandinavia and Russia. Mari Boine is one of the most popular joik performers, to my knowledge the only person as well known as her is Wimme Saari, who is also phenomenal. Boine does more than do justice to or "continue" the beautiful joik tradition. She develops it. And masterfully. You can read more about her and the tradition in the cd's liner notes, but really, it's something you need to hear, to feel. Incidentally, another bonus to this cd is the booklet included. Scholar Harald Gaski, himself Sami, contributed a small essay and the titles and lyrics to the songs are translated into english. That allows a non-Sami speaker to know roughly what is being said, but for me, it was interesting but secondary--you can feel what's going on. I'm not kidding. Still, it is a considerate and enlightening contribution.

Boine doesn't always use a musical accompaniment, but when she does it is amazing. She uses instruments from various types of music, but her ultimate instrument is her voice. How she sings is as amazing as what she sings about. She is a wise and dedicated advocate of human and environmental rights, but whether she sings of systematic political oppression, the nature we are part of, or personal grief or struggle, her extraordinary abilities convey the sincerity and importance of her messages.

The music of Mari Boine is absolutely essential for anyone who knows that music is beyond popularly dictated background noises, or "a cool song" you senselessly sing along with and dispose of when it's filled your temporary needs. She embraces the moral (ie, "politcal") inevitability of music--vocal and instrumental--it's capacity to move our souls, and the jolts of sheer energy it can send through you when your hurt, joy, anger or reverence are recognised and expressed.

Tribal Finnish for the 21st Century.......2001-11-12

Ever been dissappointed with tribal-traditional music being too techno or too simple?

You won't be dissappointed with Mari Boine's Radiant Warmth. I absolutely adore this work and hope that I can see her perform someday.

Some pieces are soft and lyrical, like a personal prayer. Others are vigorous and communicate to a larger spirit... community...to a tribe of listeners; her voice, calling out, delicately earthy, echoing through wooded expanse, the telling of oral stories in music and chant.

If we, as humans, are able to get back to a sense of intimate, tribal communication and rhythm of the north country...this is what I would imagine it would be...in the setting of our modern lives.

SIMULTANEOUSLY PRIMAL AND MODERN, CUTTING TO THE BONE..........2001-11-11

Utilizing her unique, powerful voice and seemingly unlimited creative sprit to update the traditional music of her Sami cultural roots, Mari Boine takes the listener on a journey back in time, to when these songs and stories were uses to preserve the history and soul of a people. She beautifully combines ancient, traditional instruments and forms with an unmistakable, unrelenting 'groove' -- not totally unlike the work of Hedningarna and other young Scandinavian bands, but completely individual. No one else sounds like this.

The album is generous in length, at over an hour, and attractively and informatively packaged. The booklet offers English translations of the songs, and there's also a nice essay on the cultural background of the artist and the material. The songs speak of love, of the hardship of living in such a rigorous, demanding environment, of family, of joys and sorrows, and of the stark beauty of the natural world.

For a recording utilizing mainly acoustic instruments, the power here is stunning. The only electric instruments credited are guitar and bass. Also present are violin, ocarina, flutes, dulcimer, melodica, chillador, charango (!), drums, and a vast array of percussives. The effect is beautiful, hypnotic, mesmerizing -- and extremely powerful.

Mari has one other recording, GULA GULA, available domestically (it quite appropriately appeared on Peter Gabriel's Real World label), and several available as imports. How she has escaped wider attention on these shores is a mystery to me.

I don't know if it is because the music or because of my faith on it, but it doesnt fail. I listen to it when I feel any pain and it definitively goes away, be it a headache or PMS. :) It is great.

Terrific CD!!.......2003-09-13

This CD has wonderfully relaxing music coupled with subliminal messages to improve your health and healing. I have Fibromyalgia, Lupus, and Arthritis and I have seen a noticeable difference for the better in my health since I started listening to this CD. I do listen daily, but the music is really great, I never get tired of it. It can be blended into the background as well. This CD has helped so much that I have bought other CDs by Steven Halpern to help with getting restful sleep. They work great too!
