The national arrival of Virginia-Washington, D.C. singer René Marie is a major event in the jazz vocal ranks. She has passion and technique to spare, and she's willing to try unusual material and fresh approaches. A ballad like "The Very Thought of You" shows her in command of all the traditional virtues, unfaltering pitch and articulation, subtle inflections of her sound, and a personal approach to reshaping melody. She even takes some signature songs and makes them her own, recasting "God Bless the Child" at a fast tempo that takes it out of Billie Holiday's exclusive orbit. She has a sense of a lyric's strength, too, whether it's the potent protest of Nina Simone's "Four Women" or the whimsy of Harold Arlen and Truman Capote's "A Sleepin' Bee."

The musicians are superb, working hand in glove with Marie well beyond the usual accompanying roles, from the Afro-Cuban modal powerhouse "Afro Blue" to the township groove of the title song. Pianist Mulgrew Miller surrounds her voice with the most apt chords, while bassist Ugonna Okegwo, solid throughout, makes a compelling duet of "Motherless Child." "Tennessee Waltz" picks up jazz harmonies from Marie's voice and a strong country-blues infusion from Marvin Sewell's slide guitar, while "Afro Blue" has Marie soaring with Sam Newsome's soprano saxophone, effectively imitating a flute in the process. Marie's also an affecting songwriter, as the uptempo "I Like You" and the sultry "Hurry Sundown" make clear. René Marie is a classic jazz singer, one who sets her standards by Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan but still makes her own statements. --Stuart Broomer

4 out of 5 stars Be one of the first "in the know".......2005-06-15

I found this CD on a "So You'd Like to.." list from someone whose reviews I typically enjoy and was flabbergasted that I'd never heard of Ms. Marie before. She uses her supple voice to assay classics in startingly fresh ways, such as the bluesy "Tennessee Waltz", which includes a brief yodel section (stop cringing, the way she does it it's AMAZING...) or the zippy take on the Billie Holiday chestnut "God Bless the Child".

Marie is helped along here by pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Ugonna Okegwo, guitarist Marvin Sewell, Sam Newsome on soprano sax, and Gerald Cleaver behind the kit with Jeffrey Haynes assisting on percussion.

When I got here there were only 18 reviews, leading me to believe she's still fairly unknown. I borrowed this CD at our local library (God bless 'em) and here's my take:

HIGHLIGHTS:
Marie turns in a buoyant "What a Difference a Day Makes". The bridge alone (featuring Marie's "Harlem yodel" [she blends the blues into it rather than a pure country yodel] and a soaring wordless moan that stretches throughout her range and incorporates vocal trills at times) demonstrates the control Rene has over her voice and the lengths to which old songs may be stretched and remolded into something new. A barebones rendition of "Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child" deftly segues into her take on Nina Simone's "Four Women", makes it a laidback "coffeehouse" arrangement complete with bongo. The desire in her voice is palpable as she begs "Hurry sundown/bring him to my side..". A caffeine spiked version of "God Bless the Child" soars into the ether with a nice solo from Miller and some inspired scatting by Marie. The title hymn is a dancing ode to the power of the current breath...a celebration of life itself. ("No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock I'm clinging/Since love is lord of heaven and earth/how can I keep from singing?") A delicate whisper of a vocal does "The Very Thought of You" proud.

LOWS:
"I Like You" sounds like an attempt at the whimsical imagery of "My Favourite Things" but it's not up to the task. It's not awful...just far from being one of the better moments here. Likewise, I didn't find myself going back to "A Sleepin' Bee".

BOTTOM LINE:
Where have I been that I've been missing out on this woman? Where have YOU been? Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Artist, Just Hitting Her Stride.......2005-05-01

In the past 4 months I have become a huge Rene Marie fan. I consider "Serene Renegade" and "Live at the Jazz Standard" two of the best albums of the past two years. It's interesting to hear an album like this, released in 2000. It is a 5-star album; it pales only in comparison with the latter two Rene Marie albums. Whereas there she's roaring out of the starting blocks, here she's starting to hit her stride.

A good example of what I mean is the title track, "How Can I Keep from Singing." Here, accompanied by acoustic guitar, soprano sax, and percussion, it is outstanding; on "Live at the Jazz Standard," done a capella, it is out of this world.

Another example: Her original, "I Like You", is witty and has a nifty hook. Her later originals, "Paris on Ponce" and "Rufus Daliarg", are even better.

For me, the two highlights of this album are "Tennessee Waltz". She does this old chestnut as a blues, with a "yodel" at the bridge. When you think of the song's lyrics, it works as a blues. This is the most creative cover on the album; her latter two albums are full of creative covers, however.

And 5 stars to any singer who does the Nina Simone classic, "Four Women." This is the most under-covered classic around, undoubtedly because it doesn't work unless a Black woman singer sings it. But still, the last time I heard it covered was by a folk duo, Hedge and Donna, more than 30 years ago. Ms. Marie is sensational on this tune.

I also have to tip my hat to her cover of "God Bless the Child". I wouldn't think I'd like this song done as an uptune; but her scatting here is likewise sensational.

Bottom line: if you're a Rene Marie fan, you must have this. If you are a fan of jazz singing, you should have this. Highly recommended. RC

5 out of 5 stars Late Blooming Great Jazz Diva!.......2003-06-08

I enjoy listening to this new songtress. Ms. Rene Marie has a very pleasing silky smooth Jazz voice and she does great homage to the popular songs of the past, but I would like to hear her do more originals. She needs to record some songs to make own, songs that would be known as Rene Marie songs. I myself have some songs that I wrote that could help her out in that respect if she or her management were interested. All they need do is contact me at: bluesboy@his.com. In any case good luck to her with her career and I shall keep listening.

5 out of 5 stars Soaring Songbird.......2002-12-23

In reverse it was. I got "Vertigo" first, because that was the only one the store had. I was so in love with Rene's voice and vision that I just had to get her previous album. "How can I..." is almost better than the follow-up. They are similar in their greatness: Great musicians, innovative arrangements ("Afro Blue" and "God Bless the child"), and superb compositions by Rene, such as "I like you" and "Hurry Sundown." Rene has got to be one of the best jazz talents around today. Her improvisations are quite original and surprising, her vocal control is simply breathtaking, her compositions and arrangements of trad Jazz tunes is highly creative. Who would have taken "God bless..." at such a fast-paced tempo, when it always has been a ballad? Or, "Afro Blue" given a world-music dress? Her voice itself is also a wonder to behold. She can blare out like a perfectly controlled wind instrument at full volume, or she can whisper you into ecstasy with perfect timing and elastic phrasing on the ballads.Thank goodness she came out of her musical retirement. The music world is better thanks to her.

5 out of 5 stars This One Sings.......2002-03-23

Read the reviews, press releases etc... then buy it, you won't be disappointed. She rates right up there in quality and presence. A really wonderful talent.

2 out of 5 stars An Unfortunate Mismatch Indeed.......2005-12-31

I must agree with an earlier review, that this CD is, sadly an unfortunate mismatch indeed. Not to take away anything from the exciting voice of Lorez Alexandria, but this is a poorly produced and orchestrated collection.

5 out of 5 stars See The Light .......2005-08-27

I thought I new all the great female vocalists, from popular, like Ella to less renown, like June Christy. Lorez Alexandria is a revalation, so talented and I missed out on her until I bought a compilation CD from a radio station in Philly and there she was-fantastic. I ordered this CD, "Singing Songs Everyone Knows", with some model on the cover. Lorez was no Lena Horne in the looks department but, she was doubly blessed with a beautiful voice and wonderful phrasing. If you like standards and those who bring them to life, do yourself a favor and have Lorez show you how a song like, "I'll Be Tired Of You," should be sung. A great overlooked talent is Lorez Alexandria.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite jazz vocal sets!.......2003-03-13

Wow this cd is an amazing reissue of the original lp, with cover artwork and everything. What a thrill it is to hear such a beautiful voice soaring over wonderfully arranged jazz orchestrations. This is one of my favorite Lorez Alexandria recordings{also check out Lorez Sings Prez and Band Swings}, she truly is a master of her art, jazz vocalizing. Listen to her the way she effortlessly scats thoughout the opening number "Just One Of Those Things", and the way she really makes you think she's a hopeless lush on a difinitive version of "Lush Life", and "Angel Eyes" is just haunting. If you enjoy 50's recordings by Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, and Ernestine Anderson, you will surely enjoy this exciting cd, no complete jazz vocal colelction should be without it. Essential music.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly jazz singing.......2003-03-13

This is the highlight of Miss Lorez alexandria's career, that sweet horn like voice, swinging with the orchestra. One of the high points here is when she gently and ever so smoothly scats along with the band on the opening track It Was Just One Of Those Things. She also creatively improvises on But Beautiful, and sounds wonderful on Lush Life. If you like Sarah Vaughan's Roulette sessions with Basie, you should really get this. This is some of the finest work by this much forgotten jazz legend. Don't pass this one up.

Album Description

Singer Jacqui Naylor, whose sophisticated vocal style is often compared to the jazz legends of the _30s and _40s, releases her debut album on the Ruby Records label. Naylor_s recording includes interpretations of jazz standards and forgotten classics as well as original music written for the artist. The artist_s olde-style, yet unique sound floats over the CD_s well-orchestrated arrangements and reminisces the bygone days of truly great jazz singers with hints of Billie Holiday, June Christy and Nina Simone. While influenced by the singers and horn players of an earlier era, Naylor_s experience as a featured soloist with San Francisco's Sacred Heart Gospel Choir adds depth and spirit of gospel to her timeless renditions. L.A. Jazz Scene calls Naylor's voice "precise, languorous and very sexy." Subtle vocal interpretations, relaxed tempos and economical instrumentation characterize Naylor's treatment of compositions by Gershwin, Kern, Carmichael and others, creating an album described by critics and fans as "soulful" and "intimate."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tell Me More and Then Some.......2005-05-08

The song "Tell Me More and Then Some" on this album is so terrific I have it on repeat play--others ask me for mercy, but hey, this is is as good as music gets. The vocalist and band are in perfect synchrony for some of the most fascinating tempo/lyrical interplay you will EVER hear. You will LOVE this one. Jacqui "sings low" and she can really deliver.

3 out of 5 stars Perfectly pleasant and presentable.......2003-08-06

This one didn't rock my world, but there is some good stuff on it. It's a decent effort, and if you like Jacqui you'll like this one.

Honestly can't say too much more about it.

5 out of 5 stars An irresistible voice to fall in love with.......2003-05-22

I have had this CD for more than a year now, and by now I've heard it easily more than a hundred times. Jacqui has a wonderfully puzzling voice. It is cristaline and beautiful, and also somewhat hard to figure out, as if having different modes. This I really mean in a positive way. As it is well known, she sometimes sounds like Billy Holiday (e.g. in parts of Lazybones, The way you look tonight, a bit in Two sleepy people), but sometimes she has an absolutely unique sound (e.g. Nocturne, May I come in, I cover the waterfront, In the wee small hours), and *then* in particular I experience an endless fascination when listening to her. Her voice sounds almost understanding, it's a voice to fall in love with, a voice that caresses you generously, that cries softly but deeply about longing and loneliness, that can be playful, and also wise, a voice that almost listens to you and comforts you while sharing with you its own heart out so beautifully, puzzling and also oh so irresistible... If I had to pick favorites songs on this CD, they would probably be May I come in, In the wee small hours, I cover the waterfront, Nocturne, and Something cool, but all songs in this CD make it a pleasurable journey to listen to, from start to end. This actually has become one of my favorite female vocal CD's, and needless to say, Jacqui is one of my favorite female singers, the others being Rebecca Pidgeon, and Diana Krall (well and Arleen Auger). I highly highly recommend this CD, in particular for anyone that is very fond of female vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-07-31

The sound of Jacqui Naylor is simply amazing. Dazzling, seductive, alluring...she just draws you in to her musical world and doesn't let go. I'm a big fan of female jazz vocalists and have heard Stacey Kent, Jane Maneheit, and Tierney Sutton live as well as on CD, but would put Jacqui Naylor in a class of her own. She's something very special and I only hope I have the chance to see her in person in the near future. Jacqui, please come to Minnesota and play the Dakota!

5 out of 5 stars Oh Jacqui!.......2002-06-30

In life, we are brought together in a thousand ways. We meet on the street, in a bar, at a museum, at work. For those of you who have not yet had the good fortune of meeting Jacqui, let this album serve as your introduction - to be followed by "live at the plush room".

Jacqui brings talent, humour and grace to her work and through her music, reminds me of what really matters - love.

I wish you a warm, life-long friendship with this wonderful woman.

      Album Description

The launch of Jon's own Sugar Apple imprint in 2001 has made his music even better because he now has total creative and artistic control. A Time For Love is Jon's fourth release on Sugar Apple and yet another masterpiece. Musically Jon keeps his fans satisfied with the special blend of jazz, latin, and soul, a niche he has cared successfully for himself over the years. Except for one cut the songs are all cover versions, but there's no need to worry that you get the umpteenth version of songs you're tired of hearing because you have heard them too often. In fact, all songs get the Jon Lucien treatment that turns these songs into something special and makes you wonder if the songs haven't longed to be recorded this way all the time.

      5 out of 5 stars forgotten diva.......1998-09-15

The first time I heard this CD, I just sat in amazement that I had never heard this voice! It is a masterpiece of phrasing and purity. It was as if I was hearing "Lazy afternoon" for the first time. She swings and slinks through standards and songs I've never heard before with true diva grace. This album is a MUST. Lucy, if you read this...bless you!
